    Book Description

If not for the work of his half cousin Francis Galton, Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory might have met a somewhat different fate. In particular, with no direct evidence of natural selection and no convincing theory of heredity to explain it, Darwin needed a mathematical explanation of variability and heredity. Galton's work in biometry -- the application of statistical methods to the biological sciences -- laid the foundations for precisely that. This book offers readers a compelling portrait of Galton as the "father of biometry," tracing the development of his ideas and his accomplishments, and placing them in their scientific context.

Though Michael Bulmer introduces readers to the curious facts of Galton's life -- as an explorer, as a polymath and member of the Victorian intellectual aristocracy, and as a proponent of eugenics -- his chief concern is with Galton's pioneering studies of heredity, in the course of which he invented the statistical tools of regression and correlation. Bulmer describes Galton's early ambitions and experiments -- his investigations of problems of evolutionary importance (such as the evolution of gregariousness and the function of sex), and his movement from the development of a physiological theory to a purely statistical theory of heredity, based on the properties of the normal distribution. This work, culminating in the law of ancestral heredity, also put Galton at the heart of the bitter conflict between the "ancestrians" and the "Mendelians" after the rediscovery of Mendelism in 1900. A graceful writer and an expert biometrician, Bulmer details the eventual triumph of biometrical methods in the history of quantitative genetics based on Mendelian principles, which underpins our understanding of evolution today.

The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, is a time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet many women don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersome symptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexual difficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treating these problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopause or know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discount patients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessary treatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be ... Perimenopause? can help.

In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-control pills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting the capsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's no reason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating around unless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural and herbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate for menopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or even dangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type of ultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of all emergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterine bleeding.

With added resources, including URLs for recommended newsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with information about the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a natural progesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficial reference for both women and health-care providers who could stand to brush up on this topic.

I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter. I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

1 out of 5 stars Too Drastic, Too Closed Minded.......2005-01-14

Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc. Would not recommend.

1 out of 5 stars Lone voice here.......2004-12-10

Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
    - he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved. I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
    - he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery. I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
    - the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go. I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
    - he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills. I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Women Over 40.......2003-06-03

I spent three years in misery suffering numerous symtpoms that couldn't be isolated by my doctors. Many times, I was told that these symptoms were essentially psychosomatic, or related to my weight, or stress from work. Then my husband found this book in a bookstore while on a business trip...just flipping through it, he immediately recognized the problems that I was experiencing. This book made such a difference for me. It helped me get through the final two years of my perimenopausal period and helped me learn how to manage the symptoms. If you think you might be approaching menopause now (or expect to be in the near future), I encourage you to get this book. It will make the next few years of your life much easier and give you peace of mind and body!

    5 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover.......2002-10-12

I really wasn't sure about this book just based on the cover. Boy was glad I changed my mind and purchased it! Like another reviewer I've read several books on the subject of perimenopause. None can compare to COULD IT BE...PERIMENOPAUSE? Dr. Goldstein has provided such a great service to those of us who are wondering what the heck is going on with our bodies and minds during this sometimes trying time. One of the sections that I was so glad to read is about dealing with symptons in a natural way. He asks, "Do you really want it natural or safe?" Dr. Goldstein brings up great points in answering this question. I realized what I wanted was safe and if at all possible natural. If anyone is contemplating surgery, get a copy of this book and read the section about this subject. It is very important and a REAL eye opener. I wish I had this book before I had surgery. This book really educates you and prepares you to ask more questions when visiting your OB/GYN.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Expert Advice .......2007-06-08

Having owned guinea pigs for 20 years, collecting books about them is a hobby. Unfortunately, I don't feel that this title is among the best. It seems the author may not be a cavy owner. On page 5, for example, she mentions having to consult with guinea pig owners to write the book, and frequently says "enthusiasts recommend" rather than authoritatively relaying what she has learned through personal experience.

There are several errors and photo repeats in the book, but I'll skip over those. The main problem is the feeling that the author has never owned guinea pigs. There's a lack of definite advice; the author is hesitant to merely recommend a type of animal bedding or whether or not to feed a guinea pig alfalfa hay. Illness? Prevent it. Pregnancy? Prevent it. These sections should be broader, because sometimes people accidentally adopt a pregnant sow, and illnesses cannot always be prevented--and a vet is not always close at hand for emergencies. Rather than coming across as helpful, these oversights came across as someone not knowing about the topics, and thus finding a way to skirt around them. Much of the information is basic and could apply to any companion animal, such as teaching parents how to work with kids when handling pets.

One need only look at guinea pig books by Myra Mahoney or the late Peter Gurney, or (to recommend another Bowtie Press title) Gerbils by Donna Anastasi, to see how people who love and own animals write about them in a way that someone who doesn't simply can't. This book is definitely well written, but it comes across as if it were written by a detached reporter rather than an expert sharing a passion. It's a pretty book with charming photos, but it doesn't convey a love of the subject matter, or the authoritative understanding that a writer needs to have in order to teach his or her readers. As the author writes, "But appreciating the guinea pig isn't the same as owning one" (p. 21). My hope is that the author will adopt some guinea pigs and find out what a joy they are . . . and then, several years from now, rewrite and re-release what could be an amazing care book. Until then, a guinea pig care book by definite cavy owners like Katrin Behrend, Myra Mahoney, or Peter Gurney might prove more helpful to new owners.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book About Proper Care for Guinea Pigs.......2006-07-25

I just purchased a guinea pig for my 7-year-old son, and I purchased this great book as a guide on how to properly care for his new pet. This book has everything that the beginning guinea pig owner needs to know. From proper feeding to cleaning the cage, this book contains everything the owner needs to know to raise a healthy, happy pet.

Perhaps the most relevant passage of the book for me was the section dealing with proper handling of the guinea pig. I sat with my three children and read this passage aloud to them so they would know how to properly hold their new friend. In less than a day, my son has become an "expert" at correctly holding his pig, thanks to the tips found in this book. I've also found myself referring to the book for such things as which types of vegetables to feed (guinea pigs need lots of vitamin C) and how to properly trim their nails.

I highly recommend this fine book. I knew basically nothing about guinea pigs before I bought this book, but this book will help the novice guinea pig owner successfully raise a healthy and happy pet. If you're looking to purchase a guinea pig, make sure you buy this fine book first. It will give you all of the necessary information so you can enjoy your pet and make sure he's happy, too.

This book is completely falsely advertised in my opinion. I wanted to learn how to make mini books from scratch and since their subtitle claimed: "construction tips and ideas for creating mini albums from start to finish" I figured that's what I'd learn in this publication. Wrong!
Basically it is more of a theme book and a page idea book only instead of 12x12 or 81/2 x 11 pages they make 8x8 or 6x6 pages. So they don't really show how to make mini albums but mini pages (that you would put in store bought albums!) There are only 3 projects for actually making books and those projects are not very original.
The scrapbooking style itself is also not one I care much for: very busy with lots of embellishments.
Next to each page, the author lists: "construction tips", again very misleading words since no construction is actually involved.

If you want to learn how to make original fun scrapbooks from scratch I suggest the "Yes, It's a scrapbook" series by Donna Downey from Simple Scrapbooks publishing. All 3 in the series are great!
Definitely don't waste your money on this one!

                Book Description

This book boldly goes where no plant book has gone before: to the hard-hitting facts of what works and what doesn’t work—when it comes to growing lush, beautiful plants that bring joy and beauty into our lives. It does this by exploring the most common causes of plant death:

In so doing, this book debunks myths left and right—like that disastrous water once a week thing. It throws out the silly plant hype—like that nonsense you find in any other plant book about how fussy African violets are. This down-to-earth guide is chock-full of vivid information, humorous examples and analogies. In short this foolproof guide is guaranteed to turn around the worst plant killer!

5 out of 5 stars HOW NOT TO KILL YOUR HOUSEPLANTS.......2004-02-29

This amazing book contains all the information you will probably ever need to sucessfully grow houseplants. Many great tips for propagation are also included. This book, listed as 'The foolproof guide to lush, healthy plants', absolutely is the best I have come across concerning the nitty-gritty details of houseplant care. The author writes in a friendly style and includes many examples of common mistakes (which most books don't include) we all make. I heartily recomend 'How not to kill your houseplants'.

                2 out of 5 stars Reads like a novel.......2003-01-20

This book has about three or four useful tips, but you have to read through a lot of blah blah and pointless story telling to get to them. So if you're looking for a short to the point "do this, don't do that" and "buy this plant, not that one" this is not the book for you. It has no information on how to care for specific plants, it's all general. I sent mine back.

                  Book Description

Do you really need to know if your daughter has tasted beer or your son has had his first kiss? Probably not.

Teens keep secrets. They need this privacy to resolve their own dilemmas, make their own decisions, and start down the road to becoming independent, responsible adults. Although parents can't (and shouldn't) know everything, they are right to worry about giving their children too much freedom, since teens can be attracted to dangerous behaviors.

Parenting teenagers means allowing them the freedom to explore, make mistakes, learn, and keep moving forward. Dr. Peter Sheras, an expert in adolescent development, has taught countless parents how to know when to step back, when to ask questions, and when to take definitive action. In I Can't Believe You Went Through My Stuff! he explains how pushing for information or attempting to keep teens confined in too small a box will undoubtedly result in anger, resentment, and worst of all a penchant for trouble.

The book includes solid, practical advice on:

I Can't Believe You Went Through My Stuff! will give you the key to keeping your teenager safe while building a trusting, warm, and communicative relationship.

                    Book Description

John Bellany is the most influential Scottish painter since the war, re-establishing a native, figurative art at a time when Modernism and abstraction seemed invincible. His paintings are in the collections of major museums and art galleries around the world, including the National Galleries of Scotland, The Tate Gallery, and The Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum in New York. John McEwen’s book takes the reader through the truly amazing life and works of one of Britain’s foremost living artists. Throughout his career he has painted elemental allegories, and his work often reflected events in his personal life, such as a series of pictures inspired by his liver transplant.

Iain Sinclair knows the mythical paths of London like no-one else. In poetic often painfully intense prose, he conjures up the half-dead spirits that stalk the streets of this seedy town. The landscape is dominated by dodgy second-hand book dealers skulking in the shadows obsessed by the Ripper murders, and by the vicious presence of Jack himself, the embodiement of powerful evil forces embedded in the fabric of the city. If you only ever read one novel about Jack the Ripper, or never wanted to read one, White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings is a must. A warning though: it is not for the faint-hearted.
