Excellent biography of not so hot general/politician.......2006-05-08
Stephen A. Hurlbut was a controversial figure throughout his whole life. He seemed incapable of giving anything more than mixed results in all his endeavors. Born in South Carolina, he practiced law in Illinois beginning in 1845. He served as a Whig in the state legislature just prior to the Civil War, and then was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in 1861. He served in northern Missouri for a time, but had little understanding of guerilla warfare. He did much better at Shiloh defending the Union left. He also commanded well at Corinth and Meridian, but failed to seize the initiative after the Confederates were defeated at Hatchie's Bridge. Although he was loyal and dutiful, he was not a strong leader of men. He was also a heavy drinker, which got him into hot water. He was extremely harsh toward southern sympathizers, blacks, and Jews, and it was a mistake making him commander of the Department of the Gulf in September 1864: he was charged with corruption and was antagonistic toward the Louisiana authorities. His drunkenness was also becoming a major handicap. After the war he became a Republican leader in Illinois and helped organize the GAR. He was a minister to Colombia, 1869-72, and then minister to Peru during the Peru-Chile War, where he drunken behavior was an embarrassment to the US. He died in Lima in 1882. Jeffrey Lash's account of Hurlbut's life is informative and well written and pulls no punches. Except for having the ability to organize for his political causes, this southerner with a Yankee heritage was only mildly competent in as well as out of uniform. Lash's efficient and well-fitted biography is better than Hurlbut probably deserves. Recommended.
Politicians and generals- has it changed?.......2004-01-01
Stephen Augustus Hurlbut - forger, card cheat, extortionist, profiteer, and falling-down drunk - Lincoln's and Grant's politician general. His personality shortcomings illuminate military campaigns, occupation, reconstruction, and politics in the Civil War years - before, during, and after - and hold lessons for future "administration" of occupied lands.

Good first volume on Wilhelm.......2007-07-05
Sometimes psychologizing great players in history is a waste of time, or worse; with Wilhelm it's part of the territory.
Wilhelm's relations with his mother over her Anglophilia, etc., would largely appear to stem from his childhood and the treatments for his withered left arm, contrasted with the hagiography for his grandfather, Wilhelm I, vs. the younger Wilhelm's liberalizing father, Friedrich.
Cecil doesn't break any new ground here, but does have a little more detail of Wilhelm's childhood than a one-volume biography would.
Where he does have more depth, not just detail, is how this affected his relations with Great Britain when he was Kaiser, and how he personalized his problems here through deliberate affronts to people such as Edward, Prince of Wales, and Prime Minister Saulsbury.
Cecil also goes into details on Wilhelm's relations with his government ministers, and especially his chancellors, and how they attempted to "handle" him.
I haven't read Volume 2, but have my appetite whetted.
A hostile biography.......2006-04-22
Wilhelm II, Prince and Emperor 1859-1900, was a hostile biography. This is the first of a 2 volume series, so it ends in 1900 even though Wilhelm lived in exile in Holland until 1941.
[The sequel is: Wilhelm II: Emperor and Exile, 1900-1941 (Cecil, Lamar) Publisher: University of North Carolina Press (October 1996) ISBN: 0807822833]
We are led to believe that Wilhelm II was a bizarre and incapable sovereign because he didn't work hard, wasn't a good listener, was isolated from outside influences, picked associates for their loyalty, and thought that the government should be composed only of those who agreed with him. Isn't this a universal set of attributes for all government leaders? We could have assumed all of the above, and then gone looking for differences that set our subject apart from the pack.
Wilhelm II considered socialists or radicals "to be criminals unworthy of his grace and favor." My guess is that the author has leftist or Anglophile leanings which were the basis for his criticisms of Wilhelm II.
Wilhelm II was manly and robust, spoke frequently of religious manners, and was polite and friendly as well as very civil in social matters. Naturally, all of this would be unacceptable to a leftist.
The author faults Wilhelm for being callous in his emotions, and further castigates him for not having a more compassionate feeling about his subjects-but then he also blasts him for allowing momentary impulses and personal feelings to govern his actions. So, which is it?
Kaiser Wilhelm II planned to ameliorate the condition of the working class, both as a religious duty and as a bulwark against socialism. He correctly perceived that socialist dogmas were incompatible with Christian ethics and impractical in execution and ruinous to both individuals and society. And this guy is "foolish"?
Industrialists were dedicated solely to maximizing profits, and exhibited no concern for the working class. Wilhelm wanted a mutually advantageous relationship between employer and worker. Wilhelm was convinced that if management did not make timely concessions, violence and socialism would result. He wanted to use the power of the crown to protect workers against unscrupulous employers. He was sympathetic to the eight-hour day. The progressive Wilhelm II wanted abolition of Sunday work unless absolutely necessary, no night employment for women and children, no work by women in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy and for a similar period after delivery, a pause in the workday for women to accomplish their domestic chores, and limitation of labor by children under fourteen.
Compared with those of similar position, Wilhelm II was a benevolent and farsighted ruler. This was a very good book. Perhaps the author should read it.
An informative and enjoyable read.......1998-07-07
History books aren't typically easy to read. This one was well written and pretty easy to follow. For someone interested in WWI or German history it would be a nice book to help with the subject.

Pushy parents have gotten a bad rap, says psychologist and achievement coach Jim Taylor. In Positive Pushing, Taylor contrasts the old-style pushing of parents overinvested in their kid's report cards and soccer scores with the positive pushing of parents who invite children to gain joy from and mastery in their accomplishments. "Success without happiness is not success at all," he explains.
In building a model of successful achievers, Taylor skewers the self-esteem movement for protecting kids from disappointment and mistakes--the very experiences that build sturdy self-regard. He urges parents to separate their needs from their children's. His marching orders are clear and compelling: guide kids to discover a passion; express love apart from achievement; create a human being, not a "human doing"; use boundaries to construct a safe harbor; and demand accountability. Most important, put kids in charge by teaching them that the results they produce depend on their efforts and actions. Taylor describes red-flag warnings to keep parents on course and offers smart questions for helping kids command their achievements, asking, for example, "Why do you want to do this?" and "What would make this a really great experience for you?"
At times, Taylor's unique approach is undercut by a tendency to quote other sources. Still, his own fresh and insightful words will inspire every parent who reads this book. --Barbara Mackoff

A brilliant guidng force in our confused, high-pressure times.......2006-09-23
Positive Pushing speaks to our times and the difficulties parents face when determining how much or how little to push their children to achieve success in life. We all want to motivate our kids to succeed in life, but how much is too much? When do we push and when do we back off? Dr. Taylor, through examples, research, and his own personal wisdom, walks this delicate line, showing the pitfalls and dangers of both sides, and leads us to creating a healthy, balanced and purposeful life for our young ones. In the highly competitive world we live in today, no home with children should be without this important work on their bookshelf.
Positive Pushing is just that!.......2006-07-26
If you're living vicariously through the life of your child- step out of the way. In his book Positive Pushing, Dr. Jim Taylor teaches parents to step back and examine the root of their attitudes towards their child's successes and failures and provides a win-win model for positive encouragement. He teaches parents to equip their children with an internal compass to which they can gauge their own successes and failures, while always keeping focused on giving their personal best.
Trying too hard.......2006-04-24
Jim Taylor is pushing too hard in trying to resolve various parenting and parenting/adult issues in one book. He probable knows a lot about achievement but he couldn't convince me about how positive pushing/control can be with kids--he starts with a promising argument but feters out in his style of discussion. He cites good research but his own ideas/interpretations are unoriginal and unconvincing. He is also inconsistent in his opinions (i.e., unconditional love does not exist then in next sentence he says that parents are to love their kids without condition). He also talks about achieving "balance" without real-life solutions. He does have lists of behavioral solutions in the end of the chapters but they seem disjointed and almost exhaustive, making me feel more like my kids and I would be more exhausted than "balanced". The tone of his book was bland and too distancing--I found myself skimming his chapter intros. He sounds more like a motivational speaker or academician than an experienced parent (he cites kids/families he's worked with but no personal stories about his own family). For a more "balanced" approach in parenting and easier read, I recommend "Hold on to Your Kids" by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate.
A resource for young achievers, parents, and educators..........2006-03-03
When it comes to literature on young achievers, Dr. Taylor's book stands out from the pack. Positive Pushing brings to light the oftentimes overlooked and misunderstood world of emotions, family dynamics, and external & internal expectations that young achievers face during their school years and beyond.
Taylor cuts to the chase when it comes to examining achievement and happiness, making the necessary distinction between external achievement and achievement that includes the internal experience of joy in the process. In so doing, Taylor details the type of guidance and support he encourages parents to provide in order to ensure their children experience success and happiness simultaneously.
Taylor pulls no punches as he cautions parents to examine their own motives, desires, and expectations. At the same time, he skillfully guides parents on how to navigate the terrain of ensuring their children grow into happy, resilient, confident, and successful adults. Taylor draws from his extensive professional experience as well as from current research in the fields of child development, sports psychology, and other disciplines. He provides examples in the areas of academics, sports, and the arts that every parent will quickly recognize as true-to-life. He even details red flags, along with accompanying advice on ways to respond to them.
Positive Pushing is a resource as practical as it is thought-provoking. It is a must-read for all interested in ensuring that our children are truly happy in their success.
This book changed the way I parent!.......2005-11-17
Dr. Jim Taylor does a fabulous job clarifying a parent's role in his book, "Positive Pushing". He gives you a framework to guide decisions about children's activities, schedules and responsiblities. I don't feel the panic to join everything or the guilt about not letting them quit piano lessons. He taught me what is negotiable with my three boys and what isn't. I am more of an in-charge parent. We have a new house rule: "one sport, one music...no more, no less". It has worked beautifully for 3 years now. Everyone is trying new things but they are not overwhelmed because they are trying too many new things and they are not bored because they aren't trying anything new.
Dr. Taylor taught me to own my part of parenting and to let my boys own their part. They are proud of the "excellence" they achieve by always working as hard as they can. The word "perfect" has been removed from our vocabulary. Once you open your eyes to how imperfect everything is...you'll never put that pressure on yourself or children again. Dr. Taylor brought joy back to my parenting and, I hope, to my children's childhood again.
Every parent owes it to themselves to read this book! Thanks Dr. Taylor!

To create the 150 approachable recipes in Prairie Home Breads, Judith M. Fertig, a nationally recognized authority on regional Midwestern cuisine and author of the popular Prairie Home Cooking, visited artisanal bakeries, farmhouse kitchens, rural church suppers, urban bakeries, and farmers' markets. Her instructions are simple and concise--she includes a helpful rundown of tips and techniques--and the results are truly delectable. With recipes running the gamut from Flatbread with Caramelized Onions and Brie to Pecan Brioche Bread, Prairie Pioneer Corn and Wheat Bread, and Better-Than-Blessed Potato Rolls, this may very well be the only bread book you'll ever need. Fertig includes tantalizing accompaniments like Warm Goat Cheese with Fresh Basil, Balsamic Vinegar, and Wildflower Honey and Strawberry, Rhubarb and Rose Petal Jam. Decadent desserts--like Spiced Persimmon Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce--are sprinkled devilishly throughout, as are Fertig's heartwarming stories of regional culture, culinary traditions, and the people who sustain the rich heritage of bread baking in America's heartland. --Robin Donovan

A Beginners' Bread Book with Errors to Challenge the Pros.......2006-09-03
My daughters and brother (He's an excellent cook and baker.) examined the table of contents with me and we were all thrilled by the possibilities. There's a lot of variety in the selection of recipes, but one has to be careful. Fortunately, I have one sibling who burns off whatever he eats, so he has sampled Decadent Chocolate Cherry Bread (Is this bread? Or is is a melted chocolate chip?), Prairie Painter Oatmeal Bread (He bet me that it would fall apart...) and Amish Pinwheel Bread (He wants more breads to be like this one!). Yet to be savored is the Volga German Peppernut Bread that just came out of the oven - both loaves of it, although the recipe heading says that it makes one large loaf. The author really did not totally test each and every recipe in this book, as I realized when the Peppernut recipe kept calling for more and more flour. It would seem that with six cups of flour the true amount of yeast should be more like 2 packages. Well, we shall see as soon as it's cool enough to cut. The chocolate cherry bread has so many chocolate chips in it that chocolate was running all over the counter after tipping the bread out of the pan. Reducing the amount to one-half of the amount the author recommends would seem appropriate. The Prairie Potato Starter seems to be working exactly as advertised and I suspect that it will work - I own Buckeye Cookery and read the information on bread. Baring an accident with temperature or contamination, there will be an antique loaf of bread produced in my kitchen, but not until next week sometime. Readers be advised to use caution when selecting what to make and test it ahead of time...
A Good Basic Bread Book.......2004-12-22
I purchased this book because of the reviews. While I consider it an adequate book, most recipies are pretty basic. Thus, seasoned bread bakers may be disappointed. The directions are layed out in a double column format and are not logically ordered. For instance, if the oven needs preheated or pans need preparation, I prefer this information to be set out at the beginning of the recipe. This book puts steps such as those at the end of the recipe. Of course, anyone will read through the recipe before starting work, but I still like things to be set out sequentially. Novices may be somewhat confused by the formatting and may miss some steps, particularly if they are not well organized themselves. The whole grained bread recipes show a nice variety, although I haven't tested them, yet. If you are someone who likes multiple cookbooks on the same topic, this may be a decent addition for your collection. If you are looking for only one book, I'd pass on this one and purchase something else. "The Bread Baker's Apprentice" and "Bernard Clayton's Book of Breads" are two volumes that come to mind.
take a deep breath.......2004-06-09
and smell the perfume of fresh baked bread through this pages.
The variety of recipes here is truly amazing. You'll find recipes coming from all over the US, with a distinctive italian, dutch, north and east european flavour. Accompanied with a short story about the origin of the bread, the recipes are well explained and good result is garanteed, even if you haven't got much experience because the instructions are very clear.
Chapter 1: yeast breads (swedish rye, cheddar chive bread, amish pinwheel bread, pizza)
Chapter 2: Naturally leavened and slow-rising breads (prairie pioneer two day bread, sourdough graham bread, sour rye bread)
Chapter 3: whole grain breads (northern prairie barley sunflower bread, wisconsin onion dill bread)
Chapter 4: Rolls and buns (farmhouse rolls, Iowa corn clovers, heart of the prairie parmesan rolls, german soft pretzels)
Chapter 5: quick breads, muffins and popovers (gingerbread muffins, blueberry cornmeal muffins)
Chapter 6: Scones, biscuits, crackers and soda breads (irish buttermilk soda bread, thyme biscuits)
Chapter 7: Coffee caks and pastries (cardamon and cinnamon scented swedish tea ring, summery lemon coffee cake with fresh berries)
Besides all this bread recipes, there are some that uses stalled bread to cook delicious salads and desserts Heirloom Apple Charlotte.
I totally recomend this book
Note: If for you is important, be aware that this book has no pictures, but if you ask me, you won't need them!
The family tradition I never had.......2002-01-12
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I am ever grateful to him for finding it. It takes me to this imaginary place of great grandmothers, grandmothers, farms, and recipes over a century old. Even before I tried my first recipe from this book, it brought about certain nostalgic emotions inside of me. With the descriptions that accompany each recipe, I see a little piece of history that could have been my own German grandmothers had she shared it with me. Unfortunately, while she did teach me a lot about cooking, baking and handing down recipes wasn't something she did a whole lot of. My mother was the baker and she was more of a "new world" baker than someone who used recipes given to her by her mother or grandmother. This book makes up for part of that in its own special way.
I received the book two days ago, thumbed through it once, then twice, and tonight I made my first two recipes. In fact, one just came out of the oven..."fly off the plate" rolls. One word: Heavenly. Among the best dinner rolls I've had or made. Slightly sweet, buttery, rich, yet light and full of flavor. Definitely something to accompany a dinner of flavorful comfort foods like pot roast or roast turkey and stuffing...even something like chicken stew.
For those of you lacking the comfort that comes from having time-tested old-world recipes handed down to you, this book is for you...and even for those of you who aren't lacking it, this book will prove to be one of your favorites.

KEEPING LIVESTOCK HEALTHY is one of the recognized classics in its field. Small Farmer's Journal called it "a major contribution to available farm veterinary literature." Modern Veterinary Practice wrote: ". . . highly recommended to all livestock owners." And Farmstead Magazine said, "So admirably organized and indexed that its information is instantly available."
Now completely revised and updated, this fourth edition draws on the very latest research from experts on each of the five animals covered - horses, cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. It presents new information on vaccines, artificial insemination, ultrasonography, disease testing, drug treatments, and diseases such as Lyme disease, Potomac fever, bluetongue, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease. This complete reference on livestock health is an invaluable guide to preventing disease through good nutrition, proper housing, and appropriate care.

This book has an overview of diseases for most domestic large animals. I found this text to be too general to be very helpful as a reference guide for folks needing all the details. It does have some decent rule out lists.

Excellent for beginners, but..........2000-03-28
I found this book to be an excellent resource for beginning my cattle farm. It spells out a lot of necessary things that must be done in order to care for cattle, and other livestock animals. There is, however, a lot of "higher level" biological dialogue that a novice will need to wade through to find the 'just plain english' part. However, don't let this discourage you. It is a very complete book that answers a lot of questions, many, before you even ask.

Pretty Photos But Not Much Help!.......2006-10-14
Hello, all, I have bought a bunch of books from Amazon but this is my first review. I am writing it to give people a better idea of what this book offers.
My recommendation? If you are thinking of raising beef and want to get a very broad overview of what is involved, it may be OK. If you are already down that slippery slope, there are much better books (as well as the extension divisions of most Ag Colleges).
A little about my situation: I luckily have a real job, but bought 35 acres north of town last year, always wanted to be a rancher, so am feeding 3 steers on very meager non-irrigated pasture, with hay and grain supplementation mandantory.
I'm sure the author didn't intend this book to be a comprehensive tome, but it is VERY superficial in many areas.
Examples:
FEEDING: I now know how many turnips Thomas Jefferson recommends that I feed my cattle, but wish there had been more on how much grain to plan on feeding rather than pretty cursory treatment of the subject.
WHEN ARE THEY READY TO BUTCHER?: It's...."When you can see the fat around his cod, over his pinbones, and on the rear flank. If a steer has fat around the tailhead, he's close to grading prime; If he has a fat brisket, he's too fat." HUH?? Perhaps a diagram of some of these terms? If you're writing a book for us novices, don't throw these terms at us!
BIRTHING: I'm not dumb enough to try breeding for now, but if you are interested and have a cow get into trouble, just..."Gently look and feel until you have an idea what the problem is, then give the appropriate assistance" (!!!!!!!) Or, as she goes on, "or call your vet or neighbor to help." I should add that this text is accompanied by a photo of a farmer with his hand somewhere up into the south end of a northbound cow. (This is an interesting combination of not enough/too much information in one photo!)
I don't mean to be too harsh, the book is well made and the photos are lovely, and 2-3 years ago before I knew what I was getting into it probably would have been fun reading. Just understand that it won't answer many questions.

Great book!.......2006-12-13
This is a great book with a lot of useful and practical information. A lot of the information centers around keeping goats in a natural manner. Also some great information on cheesemaking that makes it seems simple.
Great 'filler'.......2005-07-26
After reading over a half a dozen books, multitudes of Internet sources and chatting in forums with goat people, this one is great. Not so much for the specific information it contains, but as a 'filler' that covers insights and details that more experienced writers left out.

Complete Beading : Jewelry & Accessories.......2005-09-26
Book is very easily understood and shows exactly what I was looking for.
Good stuff!.......2004-12-18
This is generally a carefully laid-out book: vivid photos, clear descriptions and photos of techniques, good definitions of materials, types of beads, findings, etc., nice variety of projects implementing many different methods, styles, and skill levels. Includes wire work, looming, bead weaving, embroidery, with projects for each technique. The spiral binding is nice, as the book lays flat for easy referral while you work.
My only criticism is that some of the photo layouts could be better:
* None of the finished projects are shown on models, so it's hard to tell what the drape/dangle/twist of a particular technique will look like when worn.
* Some of the photos of finished projects only show part of the item, so even coupled with the detailed how-to photographs, you don't get a clear picture of what the end result looks like.

In matchless prose and stunning photographs, Dr. Leboyer shows pregnant women how to use yoga to move toward health and joyous childbearing, and how the health benefits will far outlast the birthing process--for both mother and child.

not a yoga guide.......2004-01-07
This book is not about how to do yoga. It is not for a beginning yoga student. It is probably of interest more to the yogini who has been practicing for some time and is now pregnant. It may be of interest to Iyengar followers as the photos are all of Iyengar's daughter when she was days before delivering her boy. This is a philosphy book, not a how-to book. The prose is spaced more like poetry so there isn't a lot of content in this book.
amazing,magical.......2003-09-07
The Yoga in this book is not accessible to all,but just looking at the pictures and reading the text is enough to transport you to a whole new realm, a peaceful, calming, happy place where pregnancy and birth are no longer a burden or a physical challenge, but a beautiful natural state to be celebrated and embrassed, that you can tame and enjoy. Leboyer was not only the leading ob-gyn when it comes to natural childbirth, but also a man who understood and loved Women, their needs and their abilities while pregnant. This book was made while working with Vanita Iyengar, the beautiful daughter of the famous Yoga Guru, and the pictures are out of this world. The Poetry is so inspiring and calming,it works almost like hypnosis...
A beautiful book, if not very helpful........1999-12-06
The photography and poetry/prose in this book is phenomenal! However, if you are looking for a quality, practical book in yoga during pregnancy this isn't it. There are no descriptions nor illustrations of specific poses. It would be very difficult for someone with limited or no experience with yoga to pick up this book and find it useful. For a more practical book on yoga during pregancy I would recommend _Yoga for Pregnancy : Safe and Gentle Stretches_ by Sandra Jordan.

Book Description
David and Alfred Smart were the Chicago-based founders of Esquire magazine, launched in 1933. One of the first men's fashion magazines, Esquire was also distinguished by the high quality of its literary and editorial features: the first issue included pieces by Ernest Hemingway and Jon Dos Passos, and Dashiell Hammett. The Smart brothers' other ventures included Coronet Films, the nation's leading producer of educational and training films during the Cold War era--many of which are now cult favorites. This fully illustrated biography chronicles their lives and innovations in the film and magazine publishing business.

Book Description
Loet Velmans was 17 when the Germans invaded his native Holland in 1940.Almost immediately, he and his family decided to escape to London, which they did on board the Dutch Coast Guard cutter, Seaman's Hope.Deciding theyt would be safer in the Far East, the family sailed to the Dutch East Indies-now Indonesia-where Loet joined the Dutch army.In March 1942, the Japanese invaded the archipelago, conquered it in a week, and made prisoners of the local Dutch soldiers. For the next three and a half years Loet and his fellow POW's were sent to slave labor camps to build a railroad through the dense jungle on the Burmese-Thailand border, to invade and conquer India. Some 200,000 POW's and slave laborers died in building this Railroad of Death.Loet, though suffering from malaria, dysentery, malnutrition, and unspeakable maltreatment, never gave up hope...and survived.Fifty-seven years later he returned to revisit the place where he should have died and where he had buried his closest friend. From that emotional visit came this stunning memoir.

A guest of the Emperor.......2007-06-13
Loet Velmans fled Holland with his parents in a small boat during the Nazi invasion. They escaped Hitler's persecution of the Jews only to undergo three and a half years of brutal treatment by the Japanese. On reaching England the family decided to continue to the Dutch East Indies, where the parents could find work, and Loet could finish high school. After graduation Loet was drafted into the Dutch Army. On Holland's surrender in Java, he became a prisoner of war. After nine months confinement on Java, Loet was sent to Singapore, where he was confined at Changi. Loet dabbled in the black market, and even opened a 'restaurant' called the Flying Dutchman. In May 1943 he left Changi with 'H' Force, bound for the Burma Railway. After reaching Bangpong Thailand by train, Loet and his group had to march 86 miles to Spring Camp. Loet felled trees, built a section of the access road, removed boulders from the railbed with a hammer and chisel, and lost many friends. After being felled by malaria and dysentery Loet was admitted to the camp 'hospital'. Upon recovery he was assigned to duties as a medical orderly. In discussions with his fellow prisoners Loet formed the opinion that their brutal Japanese guards were representative of Japan as a whole. What the prisoners could not fathom was "...how an entire nation could get its kicks from beating and torturing its prisoners." Upon the completion of their section of the railroad the men from Spring Camp were sent to Kanchanaburi. After a month or two there Loet returned to Singapore. After several months at Syme Road Camp Loet returned to Changi. There he shared a cell in Changi Jail with Rabbi Nussbaum,(a Dutch Army Chaplain) and another Dutch POW. Following liberation Loet spent 5 months in Singapore working on a Dutch newspaper, The Oranje, which was printed on the Straits Times press. In February 1946 Loet returned to Holland where he attended Amsterdam University. There he met his wife, Edith. Edith has written Edith's Story, an account of her life as a hidden Jew in Nazi occupied Holland. In the 1950's the Velmans emmigrated to America, where Loet went to work for the public relations firm Hill and Knowlton. From the beginning Loet was heavily involved in Hill and Knowlton's far east business, and frequently found himself traveling to Japan. It is unclear whether Loet ever informed his hosts that he had spent the war as 'a guest of the Emperor.' What is clear is that the Japanese produced a "visceral reaction" in Loet. He felt that: "...the entire Japanese nation had overlooked, papered over, trivialized or forgotten the atrocities committed in the name of its Emperor." During a business trip to Tokyo in the mid seventies Loet spent a night on the town with some Japanese business executives. At a bar in the Ginza district his hosts joined the other patrons in belting out a Japanese song between rounds. After repeated inquiries one of the businessmen finally revealed to Loet that the song was a patriotic military march from World War Two that soldiers sang to raise morale. Loet quickly found himself stone cold sober. Loet reports that in his dealings with the Japanese he "...never lost my compulsion to keep a wary eye on them." He believes that westerners and Japanese still find each other incomprehensible, but has hopes that perhaps his grandchildren's generation might bridge the gap. Readers seeking to learn more about what happened to their relatives on the Burma Railway or in Changi should be advised that Loet uses only the first names of his friends who died in captivity.
Interesting personal account.......2006-07-05
My grandfather was a POW in Burma and came back with stories that make you shudder and I bought this book to see if there was more I could learn. Although there is preamble on how Velmans escaped from the Netherlands and then moved to Indonesia and his life after the war, the account of treatment by the Japanese and working on the Burma railroad is quite insightful. There is not much on what happened to the Japanese after the war (war crimes) and Velmans does not really give you his opinion of the treatment he received. However, as a personal account, it is an interesting book.
One man's gut-wrenching and nearly fatal three and a half year tenure as a slave laborer for the Japanese army.......2005-07-06
The inspiration for the classic book and film "Bridge Over The River Kwai", Long Way Back To The River Kwai: Memories Of World War II is the painfully honest true story of one man's gut-wrenching and nearly fatal three and a half year tenure as a slave laborer for the Japanese army during World War II. A prisoner of war. An insert of black-and-white photographs illustrate this testimony, which presents the unvarnished truth about inhumane, brutal, and ultimately deadly torments the POWs suffered during the course of the war. Long Way Back To The River Kwai also tells of the war's end, the author's rescue and slow recovery from near-death, and his gradual readjustment. The final section tells of the author's business dealings in modern-day Japan, his reflections and friendships, and his observance of the Japanese "cultural amnesia" concerning the war and the atrocities it committed during that era. Highly recommended reading and an impressive contribution to the growing library of World War II combatant memoirs.

A different view of the Pacific war........2004-04-06
The author gives a stirring and very readable story as told from the eyes of a Dutch soldier captured by the Japanese during the invasion of Java in 1942. Velman gives a very interesting story of his backgound as a Jew in prewar Holland and his families escape from the Nazis only to fall into the hands of the Japanes later.
Most of his time as a POW was spent helping to build the Thai-Burma railroad. During this period, hundreds of thousands of Aliied prisoners and native slave labors died due to disease, famine, loss of spirit, and, of course, the direct mistreatment of them by the Japanese. All this for a railraod that was barely used and is now overgrown and torn up.
It is a compelling book and the author is still trying to come to terms with the Japanse to this day.
I also highly recommend Ernest Gordon's "Beneath the Valley of the Kwai". This book was written much earlier but tells the story from the British point of view. It is now available under the title "To End All Wars".
