Customer Reviews:
"Shyness" stands the test of time.......2006-09-24
It has been several years since I first read this book, and it is still a gem, its methods still vital. Before I found it there was a book by Philip Zimbardo that was the best around for about a decade. This book is full of ideas from a clear thinker.
Several years ago, I wrote:
I studied five popular books on shyness in the past few months, and I like Carducci's because his approach is based on intimate, detailed knowledge of shy people, as well as on his involvement with a Shyness clinic. Other books approached shyness from the point of view of theory (e.g. cognitiv/behavioral or psychodynamic) and missed the many methods of managing shyness that come directly from knowing shy people well. Two things I found overwhelmingly strong: 1) he works from a strengths perspective, looking at shyness not as a deficit, but as a personality trait whose inhibiting effect can be greatly reduced with dedicated individual effort, and 2) he has a method which is clear, goes step-by-step without the need for professional guidance, and is extremely easy to follow. It does take work....but you can get to "the successfully shy life."
Great book if you're just getting started.......2005-07-05
This is the first book I've read on shyness and it's written very well. It seems that books like this are either written for an audience of Ph.D's who perform social research for a living, or for an audience with an 8th grade education. This book is neither - it delivers straight forward content in an articulate fashion that is both easy to grasp and enjoyable to read. I have tried several of the techniques described in the book and so far have had some pretty good luck. I'm very glad I picked this book as there were many to choose from and I basically just randomly selected one.
Not at all helpful..........2005-06-03
I had to stop reading this after the first chapter or two. It has a real "blame the victim" tone to it, and basically asserts that shy people are selfish, and think themselves all-important. On the contrary, most shy people have huge problems with self-confidence around others, and yet are some of the most generous people around. Don't buy this book if you're shy and are tired of being talked-down to and patronized by somebody who DOES NOT understand shy people and what they experience in life. I'm very shy, and have enough self-respect to put this book back on the shelf.
Very interesting and helpful.......2005-05-27
I'm not as bad as some of the people he talks about in the book, but I certainly found a lot of examples that hit pretty close to home. Some of what he talks about being common for shy people was suprizing to me, such as having a much harder time communicating in loud places like bars. I always thought it was just me.
I also liked that he doesn't see shyness as a problem that needs to be fixed, but helps people who may struggle to become more successful with their shyness. I've always beat myself up about not being outgoing, and it was nice that he doesn't treat shyness like a personality flaw.
I also found it refreshing to learn that shyness isn't like your eye color or something that can't be changed, but rather it's more like a learned pattern of behavior.
The book gives you advice on how to help you cope with your shyness in different situations, such as joining an ongoing conversation, dating, etc.
BORING, LONG-WINDED, AND A WASTE OF TIME.......2005-05-18
Are you looking for a book that you can sit down with for three weeks and try to get through just to learn what you could have learned from any other book on the same subject? This is the book for you! Boring and SO long-winded. It doesn't tell you anything more than any other book on shyness. I would not recommend this book as a self-help book on shyness. I would, however, whole-heartedly recommend this for anyone suffering from insomnia.

The indispensable guide to over 5,000 culinary terms
Even the most international chef sometimes needs help with today's wildly diverse cooking terminology. Now, there's an updated and revised edition of Elizabeth Riely's The Chef's Companion, which professional chefs and aspiring cooks everywhere can turn to when they need quick access to concise and reliable definitions, pronunciations, correct spelling, accepted usage, and origins of culinary terms. This invaluable guide covers all the terms that chefs might use with customers and kitchen staff-in areas such as cooking techniques, food preparation, herbs and spices, varieties of food, wine, and equipment for the professional kitchen. Over 900 new terms have been added to this edition to provide expanded coverage of areas such as wine, pastry, and ethnic cuisines. The Chef's Companion: no kitchen is complete without it.
Customer Reviews:
Informative & Entertaining.......2007-02-17
I first read about this in a student's bibliography and had to get a copy for myself. The title pretty much says it all. This is a dictionary of culinary terms, encompassing ingredients, techniques, equipment, and even some complete dishes. Riely has tried to include all the languages likely to be used in an American restaurant kitchen. English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and both Cantonese and Mandarin seem to be the most common, but there are bits of German, Portuguese, and others as well. This can create a problem for the serious user, as foreign terms are generally listed only under their native names. For example, if you wanted to know what was really in Fish Sauce, you'd have to know either the Thai or Vietnamese name before you could look it up. Still, this book is great fun for the casual reader. I bought my copy with the intention of using it in conjunction with the kitchen writings of Anthony Bourdain and Poppy Z. Brite. Even so, I find myself flipping from page to page at odd moments, following see-also references through an alphabet of food lore. Who knew that Anago sushi was Conger Eel? (Okay, I knew it was eel, but I didn't know what kind.) Who knew that Vermouth was flavored with Wormwood flowers? Whether you are preparing to dine at a snooty French restaurant, or whether you just like weird professional lingo as much as I do, this is a great book.
This book was very useful!!.......2003-08-21
This book is the newest edition to my cookbook collection. The recent, up-to-date definitions, spelling, and pronunciation techniques, made the answer to the infamous question "what's for dinner?" straightforward and effortless.

Book Description
A collection of 20 true stories set on a small family dairy farm in Wisconsin 40 years ago at a time when small family farms still dotted the countryside and summertime meant learning to drive the tractor, making ice cream, and riding a pony to the hayfield.
Customer Reviews:
Purchased it for a Christmas Gift.......2007-05-02
I purchased this book along with Christmas in Dairyland for my father for Christmas in 2005. He grew up on a dariy farm in the same "era" as LeAnn and thought he might enjoy the books. Well, he more then enjoyed them, he LOVED them. I have now gotten him all of her following books as gifts as well. He especially likes the stories that are actually about agriculture and farming. I have also read all the books and they are most enjoyable.
My Dad liked Laura Ingalls Wilder and he said, "LeAnn's books are even better then Laura's! She makes you feel like you are right there next to her."
We don't live too far from where LeAnn grew up so when my parents came to visit my husband and I he wanted to go find the farm LeAnn grew up on. After he saw the fields, the farm setting, he was rattling off all of the stories and picturing it as it was years ago. You don't often times get to meet the authors and see where they grew up but we were fortunate too.
I would highly recommend this book and any of LeAnn's book for any reader who is a country (boy or girl) or who longs for the country. You will really enjoy them!
We got to meet this author.......2007-05-01
and hear her talk about writing. She is not only a kind person and good writer, but very encouraging to others who may want to tell their own stories about life on their farm.
A very enjoyable book. She really helps put you right there with her.
A collection of autobiographical stories .......2004-12-08
Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is a collection of autobiographical stories drawn from author LeAnn Ralph's family dairy farm in Wisconsin in a time when small family farm were commonplace in the Badger State's rural countryside. Now that we live in a time when approximately 85% of American family dairy farms have disappeared into suburban township developments or absorbed into agribusiness scale corporate farming enclaves, LeAnn takes us back some forty years ago into a era when dairy farming was a dawn to dusk life, seven days a week lifestyle that bonded parents and children with hard work and a sense of the land, animals, and homestead that is rapidly passing from today's expanding urban society. More than just an autobiographical collection of anecdotal stories, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is also enhanced with a recipe for making homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker and a recipe for "Norma's Homemade Bread". Highly recommended reading, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam should be on the shelves of every community library in Wisconsin.

Easy to Use........2007-07-03
This is an very easy to use and understand how to book. It contains a great many ideas that I would never have thought of or attempted without this book. Worth the money. You will use it over and over.
Scrapbooking Goldmine.......2007-05-14
This is a great idea generator for scrapbookers. Nothing is too fancy or involved - just great "anyone can do this" page ideas. Loved it. Gave one as a gift also.
lots of ideas.......2006-11-30
I am very happy with this book-- It doesn't have a lot of step by step instructions but I got some great ideas by just looking through it. Really cool ideas for ways to cut the pictures themselves, titles, layouts, etc. Not something that will teach you new techniques but if you are wanting something to spice up what you already know without being terribly time involving then you will enjoy this book.

Finally!.......2001-03-30
I was starting to get frustrated because the only books I could find on evergreens focused on trees and large shrubs. This book is not the same, it has plenty of information about evergreen perennials as well. The only draw backs are that it does not define regions where the plant may become semi-evergreen, and it lacks information on pests and diseases. But, it's a great place to start when you are looking for evergreens.

Superb photos of bamboo. Could use more of Crouzet's text........1998-06-23
The photos are excellent. They are the way collectors view bamboo. There is a close examination of the details that make bamboos lovely horticultural subjects. Crouzet's text is fine and offers much practical quidance and advice on the choice and culture of bamboo. The person new to bamboo will need a bit more.

Book Description
Your 10-year-old talks back. Your 12-year-old skipped school. Your 15-year-old just pierced what?
If youâre exhausted, frustrated or just plain scared about parenting teens and preteens, hereâs a road map from a social worker and school counselor who survived the adolescence of her own six children. Louise Felton Tracy believes both parents and kids do better when the focus switches to helping teenagers balance their desires with lifeâs responsibilities.
To guide you in this transition, each chapter of Grounded for Life?! ends with an easy-to-read list of the steps youâll want to take to ensure that you and your teenager keep talking to each other.
For parents who find themselves backsliding into old discipline patterns, Tracy provides gentle reassurance and stories about her own challenges (and successes, however small).
A recipient of the Parents Choice' Approval Award.
Customer Reviews:
I saw myself...........2007-04-10
I saw myself in this book, and it wasn't pretty. We try so hard as parents to do the right thing, to give sound advice, to hear our kids out and even go to their defense. The thing I learned most from this book is that I actually hindered my childrens' growth in becoming responsible teens and maybe missed out on some real opportunities for communication. This book should be required reading for parents of children entering the "tween" years and middle school!
Must read if you have a teenager.......2003-01-09
I have an acting up teenager daughter, I have a lot of problems with her. I try to learn to be a BETTER teenager parent. This is the MUST read book. The author really knows what you are going through, what you are thinking and guides you how to handle them. This is the best teenager parenting book I read so far. Practical, Sound, and Effective!
