The author writes,” I don't remember whether I actually drew my pistol on an Afghan mercenary outside the phone booth in Khafgi. I remember breaking his nose by slamming the edge of the door into his face as he pressed his cheek against the outside of the glass. I remember reaching for my pistol, but I am not sure whether I actually pointed it at him."

Chapters from the book were finalists in the Writer's Digest Personal Essay contest, the Lone Mountain Writer's Contest, and The Loft Literary Center's Creative Non-Fiction Contest.

The author presents a touching account of his own story. Overall, it is neither a swashbuckling story of fighting nor is it a detailed account of war operations, even though both adventure and some military detail are included. Rather, the author presents himself, an intelligent, philosophical American who struggles with the everyday issues of life. Some parts could have used more detail, but it's brevity does not detract from the overall impact of the book. One gains understanding of military reserve officers who out of their loyalty, sacrifice their lives but out of their humanity, struggle with moral issues of war. The book is a very human story that includes humor, sadness, fear, and wonder.

Praise the Lord !.......2007-09-14

This book is amazing. It was easy to read and understand. It also gives enough information to make an (pardon the pun) informed choice. That is what irks me the most, we are not told anything about what a dentist is doing, he/she just does it. I was never told that there was mercury in my fillings. I was given a root canal by a dentist and he did not even tell me that was what he was doing. When I found out several years later I was outraged. I have lost alot of respect for the dental profession on the whole. I also had a crown that produced a green line in my gum, numerous dentists had seen it and guess what only one ( a mercury free one) told me that I had inflamation. That is disgraceful. I had that crown removed and guess what within minutes the green went away.

I have had all of the mercury removed from my mouth. Upon removal of the last 3 amalgams my hot flashes ceased that day. My periods that I did not have resumed 3 weeks later. My body temperature went to normal. I can sleep restfully at night. I don't get up several times in the evening to go to the bathroom. My quality of life has increased. I don't feel as foggy headed or forgetful. I even reduced some of my thyroid medication. So for those who want to call us ignorant or ill informed I will have the last laugh with a strong immune shystem and good health.

Anyone who seriously thinks that this is hocus pocus needs prayers to enlighten themselves especially the dentists who are slowly poisoning thier patients.

Another reason to be proactive regarding your health.......2006-11-19

I think the authors are definitely onto something here -- the clinical results are just too consistent to conclude otherwise. Like many health concerns, dental toxicity is an area where it is highly unlikely that significant research will ever be funded because it is prevention-oriented, so any direct cause and effect relationship is also not likely to be determined. But the remission of conditions -- many considered incurable -- following dental revision protocol would lead any logical, thinking person to conclude that mercury amalgams are, for some percentage of the population, dangerously toxic. Just don't hold your breath waiting for the ADA or the AMA to see the light and fess up.

This book is clearly written and easy to read, and organized so the interested reader will be able to search for relevant sections. The science is presented at a level that educated readers will be able to grasp, for those who want that depth, and simplified for those who seek a general understanding of the issues.

Dr. Huggins graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry in 1962 and received a master of science degree from the University of Colorado in 1989. He is no quack, he is a crusader for health.

There is abundant scientific evidence that amalgam fillings are a danger to health. Dental amalgam is 50% mercury. Mercury is the most toxic metal known to man. Just look at the information from The International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology at [...].

Also consider that the Swedish Dental Material Commission recommended that amalgam be banned in 2002 - download the report from [...]. They commented that "The use of amalgam has been identified as the single largest source of mercury in sewage sludge, and crematoria are a large source of emissions to air in Sweden.". So how the hell does mercury get into people's faeces without passing through the body first ?

Dentists who deny that amalgam is harmful are either ignoramuses or liars - it's really that simple. They lie because they do not want to get served with class action lawsuits from all the people made sick from their amalgam fillings. That's the same reason why the governments stand by the dentists (Sweden excepted).

Read this book and save your health.......2006-03-26

As a practicing physician, I would like to respond to the review by "palm dentist". This is the typical reply that you will get from closed minded dentists who just want to "drill and fill" then go home in their Mercedez and have no idea what a devastating blow they have dealt to the human beings who put their trust in the dental profession. The problem is that mercury leaches slowly over many years and the effects of the poisoning of the system do not develop until much later. On top of that the patient makes no corelation to his filling and simply presents to his physician while the dentist continues on his merry way with no clue as to the devastation that he wrought. Already, in the published literature, heart disease has been corelated to gum disease and bacteria from the mouth. It is only a matter of time before the whole truth comes out. Amalgam use is 200 yrs old. In 200 yrs they could not come up with a better alternative. It amazes me that they got away for so long with using the most poisonous heavy metal on the planet as a filling material. There is not one shred of proof that mercury in amalgam is safe and does not cause long term disability and death!

Another Pseudo-scientific money-grabbing topic.......2006-01-23

As a practicing dentist and scientist who could stand to generate a lot of income from the unneccessary removal of amalgam fillings, believe me when I say that from a "toxicity" standpoint, amalgam is a proven safe material, having been used in almost every country in the world for over a hundred years. There are other drawbacks to the use of metal fillings (esthetics, expansion-contraction) that should factor into one's decision to use composite over amalgam to restore a new lesion, but from a 'poisonous material' standpoint, I am in concurrence with the American Medical Association, the American Dental Association, and the World Health Organization, that amalgam fillings are safe, reliable, and effective.

Great book! My daughter is 3 1/2 and goes through the book page by page and wants to know if we have the ingredients and when we can make it. If you're interested in New Age philosophy as it pertains to dogs, this is your cup of Chamomille tea. If you're interested in practical solutions to dog behavioral problems look elsewhere. I'd stongly advise you to take the book out of the library and read it before you buy it.

I found it useless in addressing my/my dog's "issues".

If nothing more, read Chapter 4. It relates Ms Frost's extraordinary and inspiring experience with the "Vermont dogs." I am still moved and thrilled after many readings of this astonishing account.

Try her unique methods. My puppy was frightened of passing traffic on our street. I visualized my puppy walking calming on his leash. We went for a walk right away, and he was hugely improved over the day before. Amazing! He's grown now and walks quietly beside me OFF-LEASH.

April Frost is an animal communicator who comes from a place of deep love and respect for animals. She relates to each as an individual, and works with each by communicating and explaining - as well as using the clear and consistent behavioral approaches common to animal trainers. She advises people to explore what is right in their unique relationship with their animal companions, taking into account their own personality and that of their animal.

Frost has excellent suggestions and discussion on basics of training for the habits that will enable dogs and people to get along comfortably together.

In addition to offering training to people and animals, Frost has dedicated much of her life to helping animals in need. She describes a remarkable rescue of 13 malnourished dogs out of larger pack that had run wild all of its life in a pen, never having known a positive relationship with humans. The dogs were wounded physically and scarred emotionally. Her approaches in healing them are an inspiration to animal lovers.

This was a remarkable book. I had to go out a buy a copy for reference. I keep going back to it. April Frost helped me help rescued dogs using her gentle, holistic methods. I learned so many new things from her and her stories of behavior modification with loving patience made me use my brain instead of harshness with dogs. There are no other books out there like this. I've looked. Read it and you won't regret it.

I really do like this book (and the Sock Calendar) but disagree with one thing. These patterns skip a few of the beginning steps so if you need step by step directions from beginning to end, and plan to attempt these patterns without an experienced knitter nearby, access to the internet or a good library you may get stuck.

I bought The Sock Calendar because it was so handsome and then decided to learn to knit the socks as well. The patterns are very easy to follow and I can't keep up with friends' requests for hand knitted socks. The Sock Journal is even better as the author included beaded knitting and more optional variations in the patterns. And a very useful writeup for yarn substitutions.

I love these patterns for beautiful and unusual hand-knitted socks. I'm a new knitter and haven't yet made socks but read so much about the designers earlier book The Sock Calendar. Then saw this new one and had to get it.

The patterns are very easy to read and follow even for a beginner. The colorful photos are pretty as can be. I highly recommend this book to anyone knitter and especially to people who are into the new craze of knitting socks.

Good for the Coffee Table.......2005-11-04

My coffe table looks good with this on it and people do pick it up when they come over. There are alot of good works of Da Vinci in here though not all of his art is covered. I do like the fact that some of the paintings are broken down, showing the undersketches and practice drawings. I have tried my hand at replicating a few of the drawings and am overwelmed at the quality of the paintings done centuries ago. The skin is luminouse!Hey, come on, it's cheap & fun. Buy it!

Dark and brownish reproductions.......2003-10-16

Some painting and drawing works are reproduced too dark with murky spots, where most details are indistinguishable. Additionally, the colors are distorted by a brownish (sepia) hue. So, on many dark works only basic elements are visible, e.g.: The Virgin of the Rocks on p. 28 and 31, Portrait of a Young Man on p. 48, The Last Supper on p. 53 as well as Burlington House Cartoon (too dark cartoon) on p. 60. Other works may also be affected. The Last Supper is divided between two pages connecting thru Christ's face, and a whole center of the fresco is sunk in a groove between the pages. The printing is good, and on good paper.

Simple but sophistocated.......2000-08-19

If you don't know much about art but know what you like, this might be the sort of book for you. Leonardo's life is described in this basic biography, focusing on his famous works of art (finished and unfinished) and on his supporting works as well (sketches, architectural and mechanical ideas). The book is printed on glossy high grade magazine paper with color illustrations on almost every page. It brings the artist and his works to the reader in a presentation that caters to those who enjoy have an appriciation, though not an expertise, for art.
