Book Description

In a major new biography, veteran military historian and WII biographer, Charles Whiting combines both talents to tell the tale of barefoot Texan share-cropper's son, who could barely read and write, but became not only the US Army's most decorated soldier in its 250 - year history, but also the star of forty Paramount produced movies: most of which are shown on TV screens around the world to this very day. The gentle-eyed, baby-faced hero had won every decoration the United States had to offer before he was eligible to vote and killed 240 enemy soldiers in the process. Luck made him a movie star. Always he tried to improve himself, but time and time again he was relegated to the 'horse operas', where as he wisecracked cynically, "it was the same old movie, only they changed the colour of the horse." But there was a price to pay for his heroism in drugs, nervous tension and Murphy's addiction to violence. Even as a middle-aged movie star, he always slept with a .45 beneath his pillow, plagued by nightmares of the war. Murphy had been an ordinary boy, who had volunteered to go to fight and did so with exceeding bravery in the last 'good war'. He paid highly for that bravery and sense of duty to a country which had given him nothing save "malnutrition", as he used to quip. He was that last American Hero, who did as President Kennedy proclaimed, " Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Even before his young life had really commenced, he had become a legend. But in the end 'Tinseltown' and the 'feather merchants' of Hollywood broke him. As Time magazine commented on his death; "Audie Murphy belonged to an earlier, simpler time, one in which bravery was a cardinal and killing was a virtue... We shall not see his like again."

3 out of 5 stars A blase book. There are better.......2007-08-09

This book is shabby compared to the book written by Harold B. Simpson:
Audie Murphy, American Soldier. This book was printed in two 5000 ea volumes editions. I have the Veterans edition. This book was published in 1975 and is now a very rare collectors item going for at least $75 and as high as $300.00

This book is worth every single detailed fottnoted page. It is a
complete expose on his early days, through his heroics on the battle fields. I am a penultimate fan of Audie Murphy, I served with the 3rd Infantry Division at Kitzingen, Wurzburg and Schweinfurt for over 7 years
of mu military career.

Charles Whiting would have done much better had he researched Simpsons book for the references written in the bibliography.

I would therefore giive Whiting a c- in journalism for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Audie Murphy deserves much more........2007-04-13

I used to watch his films when I was a child and I still am a fan of him mainly because of his heroism as a soldier. If you want to see his truly heroism just watch "To hell and back". There you are going to see what was "a true war hero" and understand that a soldier like this won't born in this world anymore. He was not an ordinary soldier, he was the best one. I agree that this book doesn't match his importance to American history, but where many men that have never attended to any war get rich writing books about their times as protesters in front of Lincoln Monument, it's easy to understand why American people want to forget this kind of a man. Mainly because he was not graduated in any great university. Soldiers have been dying for countries that don't give a damn for them at all. But as a first book about this great American is a good choice, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Face Hero, To Soon to Rest........2007-03-29

A great book on a great American war hero. Not as detailed as I would have liked, but for it's size (239 pages) a good buy.

2 out of 5 stars Murphy must have been more interesting than this.......2006-11-16

Considering he is America's most-decorated soldier, the story of Audie Murphy's combat career as told by Charles Whiting is amazingly dull. There is no convincing explanation given for Murphy's extraordinary actions, and the descriptions of the combat itself are lacking in detail, so it's hard to come up with a feeling for what might have been going on in Murphy's head at the time. It's possible, I suppose, that Murphy just stumbled into heroism like so many before and since, and that he is not really extraordinary at all. That doesn't seem to match the "troubled loner" picture that Whiting describes, but maybe that's all there is. And a final note on the editing ... I have never seen such poor production. The number of spelling mistakes, missing words and missing punctuation in this text are beyond belief. I would guess an average of one glaring mistake every 4 or 5 pages, sometimes in big bunches that make you wonder how this book was brought to market.

4 out of 5 stars Book review.......2006-07-10

Interesting but a little dry at first since I am not a 'war buff' simply a Audie Murphy fan. I would, however, recommend it for it's content and pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2003-12-17

Mr. Whiting spends so much time quoting Murphy's autobiography "To Hell and Back" that a reader would do much better with that well-written book instead of this turgid avenue for the author's own unsupported views. Don't Bother.

3 out of 5 stars A curious book that breaks no new ground........1997-06-14

Whiting's is the latest of the Murphy biographies and shows no evidence of new research on the subject. He reports what was published in two previous bios, by Simpson and Graham, and fills the gaps with annoying speculations about his subject's thoughts and motives. One of the more interesting stories, about how Murphy plotted to kill Howard Hughes for stealing his girlfriend Jean Peters, is not substantiated by reliable sources. The book contains a few photos but not much else to recommend it. Get it if you want to complete your library of Murphy bios, but get the other two first

3 out of 5 stars A Partial Explanation.......2005-04-19

Hans von Ohain, shares with Frank Whittle, the credit for independently developing the first viable jet engine. As von Ohain is quoted as saying (pp. 35-36) -

"If I would have looked through the literature on the gas turbine, including the patents, I would have found that there was really nothing new, and my enthusiasm would have been dampened. The turbojet was therefore not a complete novelty. Since I was not familiar with its past history, it was a novelty for me. It helped me not to know what already had been done.

"The Frenchman Guillaume, as I learned much, much later, obtained a patent (international) in 1921, long before anybody else. (It was) on the axial flow compressor, a combustor, and on the turbine to drive the compressor and an exhaust nozzle very much like that of Lorin's ramjet invention of 1913. (He had) already invented the axial flow turbojet engine! Good that I didn't know!"

Here, however, von Ohain was being too modest. As Edward Constant wrote in Genesis N + 1: The origins of the Turbo-Jet revolution

"One myth first needs debunking. The word "invention" appears rarely here; "patent" even more rarely. The turbo-jet was "created." As mentioned, reaction propulsion devices were discussed -as early as the seventeenth century, and numerous devices were patented during the First World War. Indeed, in 1921, a Frenchman named Charles Guillaume patented a complete axial-flow turbo-jet in very nearly its modern form. There was one small difference": Guillaume's patent drawings, in addition to showing the expected compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine, also show, protruding from the front of the engine, a very large manual starting crank. One wonders how aeronautical engineers would have streamlined that. Guillaume's concept, in short, although of the same configuration as a turbo-jet, could not have been further from the valid scientific assumptions that made the turbo-jet a practical possibility. To say that he "invented" the turbojet in any meaningful sense is absurd. Such is true of most antique patents of modern devices. Legalistic quibbling over "invention," "patenting," and "priority" has no relevance here. What matters is actual creation of the turbo-jet and the revolution it ignited."

Once again, quoting Constant-

"Only two men held uncompromisingly to the turbo-jet: Frank Whittle in England and Hans von Ohain in Germany. One other man, Herbert Wagner, also in Germany, initiated an inquiry that led less directly to the turbo-jet, while ... Helmut Schelp, also arrived at the turbo-jet conclusion and promoted a government sponsored turbo-jet program. Finally, a turbo-prop project in England initiated by A. A. Griffith evolved fairly early into a turbo-jet. Those five men created the turbo-jet, were the provocateurs of the turbo-jet revolution. They used prior technology; certain preconditions were perhaps requisite to their work. But theirs personally was the turbo-jet."

There is no doubt that von Ohain had a brilliant and fertile mind as did Whittle. Whittle, of lower middle class background, was trained as an RAF mechanic, became and engineer and them studied the basic sciences. In contrast, von Ohain's family was of the Prussian military aristocracy. His PhD was in physics and learned engineering on the job as described in pp. 58-59

"In a book of cartoons and doggerel poetry made up as a joke by his coworkers in these early months with Heinkel, von Ohain is cited in the ... ABC with this couplet:

"P- "Pabst is ein Erfindermann
doch er niGht konstruieren kann.

"Pabst is an inventor
But he can't build anything.

"Von Ohain said:

"When I worked with the brothers Gunter, I really converted myself completely to what you may call a self-made engineer. I sat down and studied engineering very, very intensively. I knew fluid mechanics very well from Prandtl's lectures. I knew a little bit about stress analysis, so when Prandtl recommended that I get very familiar with stress problems it wasn't difficult for me to apply this knowledge to design of the turbojet. I think that after two years I could cope and compete with any mechanical engineer with respect to engineering design. I think I became a very good engineer."

Von Ohain, in contrast to Whittle found himself excellent academic mentors one of which, arranged for von Ohain to meet Ernst Heinkel who became von Ohain's employer and funder until 1945. This arrangement ensured that von Ohain's work could move ahead rapidly while Whittle languished lacking money, staff, decent facilities or any real sign of interest from the British authorities. One serious lack, they both faced, was of proper component test facilities.

Whittle's decision that the gas turbine was the way of the future, and his conceptual design work date from 1929 while that of von Ohain began in the fall of 1933. Neither had any knowledge of the other's work. Due mainly to Heinkel's support they were neck and neck by 1937 and had built up a substantial lead by 1939. As Constant wrote-

"Heinkel hired von Ohain, then only 24, and Max Hahn, and set them up in a small shop at the Heinkel works.... Work began in April 1936, just a month after Whittle began work, and the von Ohain engine was first run in March, 1937, the same month the Whittle engine was first run.... Von Ohain's, choice of hydrogen as an experimental fuel largely accounted for the nearly two-year development lead he had built up by late 1939."

According to the book (p. 59), the brilliant decision by von Ohain to use hydrogen was due to his strong scientific background.

"In view of the political climate, his tenuous position in the corporation and, most of all, the great impatience of Heinkel, von Ohain could not first develop a well-functioning combustor and then begin an engine design. From previous experience ... it was clear that a poorly functioning combustor could result in a nonfunctioning engine. This could mean the end of the turbojet project. He changed to a two-fold approach. In phase one he would quickly build a simple jet engine of minimum risk using gaseous hydrogen as fuel in order to demonstrate the jet principle in a convincing and impressive manner. Von Ohain was convinced that he could win time to systematically complete a combustor for gasoline if the hydrogen engine was successful.... Von Ohain said that his knowledge of physics brought him to the decision to use hydrogen to run the demonstration engine .... Hydrogen had known properties of high diffusion and flame velocity, plus a wide fuel-air concentration range over which combustion was possible. Von Ohain designed a hydrogen combustor that he was sure would function well and not need time-consuming pretests...."

The character of von Ohain, as portrayed in this book, is of a man possessing humility, honesty and a good sense of humor who had little difficulty winning people's cooperation and loyalty and could delegate effectively. From Whittle's autobiography, I got the impression of a man perpetually tense, humorless, with a gift for alienating people and a micromanager.

There are three areas in which the book is weak

1. Why, for all his brilliance, did the German government decide to produce the Jumo and BMW jet engines in preference to the von Ohain engines?

2. How could such a moral and intelligent man build jet engines for the evil Nazi regime? and,

3. The literary quality of the writing is mediocre, almost naive.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but better elseware.......2007-07-25

I could see that this could be a good book if you were brand new to table tennis and had a coach. Good drills for practicing with similarly leveled players. However, I feel book does not accurately describe how to truely improve your stroke. Descriptions tend to be vague and leave it to the player to experiment to get the result they are looking for. The danger for the player without a coach is that common early bad habits that are effective for begginers will become engrained. Also, the strategy section is not as good as in other TT books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-08-04

I found the book to be very helpful and informative. I have just begun playing competitively for the past year and found that the graphics/steps really have helped my game. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is just developing their game. I have bought other table tennis books, but they lacked the graphics this book has, so I am very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Table Tennis Book For Beginners-Intermediates.......2004-02-21

This book is one of the best book on table tennis that I have ever read. The clear and concise text makes this book very readable. While you may not turn into a table tennis champion overnight, following the instructions by Mr. Hodges by disciplined practice, a newcomer to the sport can learn the game, but it can also be used as a reference for intermediate players to correct their stroke or to improve it.
This book is useful not only because it explains the different strokes but it also contains sections on physical training and tactics against different style of play.
Table Tennis: Steps to Success is a must-have in any table tennis player's library.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent slient coach!.......2001-04-26

I highly recommend this book as a supplementary material for references as technique guidelines and theory support. In fact, I dont' think anyone can actually learn any sport from any book, however well-written the book may be. Table-tennis is no exception. As is indicated in the book, to learn to play the game, you need to practice. With this book, however, you can correct your weakness, look up for any question you gathered during the practice. The book covers almost all the basic drills in the modern table-tennis game.

The book is divided into chapters. For beginners, I suggest you follow the steps and do the excersies in the end of every chapter. For those who already have some basic knowledge, just check the parts you're confused with. You can easily find your part because the index is very clarified.

This is a book for beginners and intermediate-level players. If you are an advanced player who already developed a mature playing style, I don't think this book will help you. In this case, you should check out other tactic books or tourement vedios.

As to the new 40mm ball games, the new rule doesn't change the basic techniques. Therefore, the book still works. What is changed by the new ball is mostly the equipement and tactics, which is not the main concern of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Steps to Success for Table Tennis by Larry Hodges.......2000-12-09

Steps to Success is an excellent book written by author Larry Hodges. I love the game of table tennis and this is a book for anyone wanting to improve their game from the recreational to the serious player wanting to develop their game. This is a must book for someone desiring to learn table tennis and improve their game!

Yum! This book is great! Easy to follow. Check out the BBQ chicken. My parents came over for the first time for dinner (I'm a newly wed) and they ooohh and ahhhh over the BBQ chicken and wanted to know what I did. Anyways, I can't wait to try other recipes in the book! A must recipe book to own for busy or newly wed people like me!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cookbook!.......2005-05-18

I can't say how much we have enjoyed this cookbook. It inspired my son (older teenager) to actually learn how to cook and cook well. Instead of grabbing a hamburger, he now looks in this cookbook and makes something to eat at home. The recipes are healthy and tasty and easy to prepare.

5 out of 5 stars Bachelor turned Chef in 4 pages........2005-02-15

Fantastic book for treating myself right with a tasty, healthy dinner a couple nights a week.

Has also put me at ease with a few practiced recipes that I am confident serving to dates.

Jen's approach makes it just as easy and fast to whip up a healthy personally crafted meal as it would have been to warm up some Stouffer's. A MUST OWN for anyone who needs a cook book.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer's cookbook brings the fun back to the kitchen. .......2004-12-03

As a mother of two picky under 8-year old boys this cookbook has been a treasure. My kids enjoy helping whip these dinners, lunches and breakfasts up with me and on top of that they enjoy eating them also.
We now have banana pancakes with honey-butter for breakfast instead of the usual high fat, high sugar, low nutrient breakfast cereals. They enjoy sandwiches other than pb&j for lunch (and yes, they are no-trade lunches as the title of the chapter says!) with veggies and a little dipping sauce. Our dinners are not as stressful for me because Jennifer teaches you how to stalk your pantry so you can get home and answer that age-old question "What's for dinner?" in a matter of minutes by surveying your supplies. Jennifer's cookbook brings the fun back to the kitchen. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Practical.......2004-10-21

This cookbook makes it possible to cook healthy, tasty food after you've worked all day and without any compromises. Jennifer is an extremely talented and inspiring writer and cook and unlike most cooks, knows nutrition! As a busy Mom herself, you can't get better advice on what pleases kids. This is not just a list of good healthy recipes (the wonton soup and fruit compote for example are fabulous), but unlike other cookbooks, she actually explains in her introduction professional cooks' best kept secrets and is an inspiration for maintaining the delight of being with your family for a simple, delicious home cooked meal. Say goodbye to those styrofoam take-out dinners, Jennifer shows you how to cook a healthier, cheaper meal in about the same time. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that there are so few pictures, but the layout and design are topnotch.

5 out of 5 stars The best of its kind...........2006-09-11

I'm dyslexic and left handed -- and after several decades of false starts learning to knit -- I finally got it. What I couldn't figure out from all the wonderful knitting books available now is how to get the beginnings and endings (and the errors in the middle) to work as well as the actual knits, purls, yarnovers, and slips....

I borrowed one book of finishing techniques, found another at a local bookstore, and found dozens of pages on the web that all attempted to explain how to accomplish these tasks which are evidently simple to most knitters.

This book, "Interweave's Compendiu7m of Finishing Techniuest..." and another Interweave book called "Knit Fix" are the only books I've found that manage to explain in such a way that I can translate their instructions into successful knitting. Both books are compact, spiral bound, and full of un-misunderstandable directions and clear, plentiful illustrations.

If I can understand the writing and illustrations in these books, imagine how useful they will be for the average kntter!

This book suffers greatly by not featuring the word "knitting" in its title -- in dozens of searches on Amazon, it never came up and was never associated with other books in this family -- oddly, it is associated with weaving books only. Don't let this mislead you.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for Crochet .......2005-03-23

Well done you. It is a great thing to write a book, another to actually have it published, and a sheer triumph if it is a good read. Congratulations on achieving all three.

      4 out of 5 stars Good all-around reference book.......2004-07-26

I like the book very much, however, I feel the layout and the photography could have been tighter and more artful. There's a bit of a rushed-to-put-together feel about it, which is disappointing. Nevertheless, good value for a finishing reference book because it applies to all needlework disciplines.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2003-11-26

A very thorough review of different ways to finish your projects through stitches, trimmings, decorative braids, etc. Clear concise instructions, and easy to follow illustrations. A wonderful book!!

      Book Description

Because there are so many customs and traditions during the Christmas season, many times we do not pause to wonder and ponder about how and why they began. Of all the seasonal celebrations of the year, Christmas has more traditional plants with their accompanying legends and symbolism than any other season. Holly, ivy, mistletoe, the poinsettia, rosemary, the Yule log, and the most popular and recognized of all - the Christmas tree - each has its own fascinating legend and history. Many customs and traditions of the season are surrounded by an aura of mystery and magic. Drawing from ancient Druid, Celtic, Norse and Roman civilizations, along with Christian beliefs, myths have been created in an effort to explain the unexplainable. Decking the Halls: The Folklore and Traditions of Christmas Plants considers the role of many of our popular Christmas plants and flowers during this most holy season.

Decking the Halls provides a fine reflection on the folklore and traditions of Christmas plants, considering the legends and symbolism which surrounds them and the seasonal customs which have accompanied popular Christmas blooming plants. Decking the Halls could have been featured in our gardening column, but is recommended here for its historical and social reflection, crossing different cultures in its analysis of plant meaning.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to the Christmas season.......2000-11-01

Decking the Hall successfully takes on the most important task of enlightening us about the plants mankind has chosen to celebrate his favorite holiday of Christmas.

Did you know that the color green symbolizes eternal life or that many of our Christmas traditions involving plants come from the Ancient cultures of Druids, Celt, Norse, and Roman? The first chapter tells the basics of the Christmas plants heritage and where our traditions first started. In the second chapter, we learn the history at the mistletoe and how it became Oklahoma's state flower. In the next chapter, the story of the Christmas tree, how it was used in ancient traditions. The fourth chapter explains the circle of life, or as we know it, the wreath and what it symbolizes. The next two chapters tell us about the European tradition of the Yule log and the holy holly. I found it interesting that again the Christian church condemned a plant because it was used in pagan rituals, only to later lift the ban. This little package with a big story to tell also mentions the poinsettia and it's heritage from Mexico, the rosemary and how it was used in the middle ages, the Christmas Rose, which isn't really a rose at all, cinnamon, which was native to India, Peppermint, the universal symbol of Christmas, and of course the cranberry and it's functional history.

What a delightful read! I came away filled with the knowledge of ancient cultures, history, and beliefs that surround the plants I put out every Christmas. Some of the Information Linda Allen provides I am aware of, but the largest percentage I was not. I will not only look at this season's plant differently, I will also share their stories with those who will listen and tell them where I learned it all.

Memories And Images: The World Of Donald Vogel And Valley House Gallery is the story of Donald Vogel who arrived in Dallas at the beginning of World War II after a sojourn at the Art Institute of Chicago and began a successful and explosive career in the arts. This is the story of the wealth that came with East Coast art dealers following the oil field trails throughout Oklahoma and Texas. During a tumultuous time of dubious art and fake old masters, Vogel was able to be a part of bringing fine art works to Dallas, beginning with the Betty McLean Gallery, and later to his own Valley House Gallery. Already established as a painter, Vogel became a critical and important outlet in Dallas for art dealers in the United States and Europe. An honor that has endured for the past fifty-eight years at the heart of the Dallas art scene. Memories And Images is an autobiography that is very highly recommended and informative reading for students of American art history in general, and the work and contributions of Donald Vogel and his Valley House Gallery in particular.
