Customer Reviews:
Must read for Vets.......2004-04-14
Having served in Vietnam myself, I found this book to be of utmost interest. If you want a real feel for the average guy serving in Vietnam this book gives you great insight. You can tell Mr. Stahl did his research and brought back details as if he were there yesterday instead of in the late 60's. The book is a good easy read even for a guy like myself who doesn't read nearly as often as I should. I highly recommend this book.
Great read, Stahl.......2003-08-31
This is a great read. If you want to pick up a book to get a 'feel' for the everyday life of a Vietnam Vet, this is a wonderful starting point. The author captures with entusiasum, the daily grind of what life was like for the 'GI' in Nam. A book depicting a "biographical glimse" into the life and mind of the author should put you in his "shoes", and Stahl manages to do just that. You live and breath with his "typical" day, which includes 'dodging' bullets and listening for every sound being made while on 'gaurd duty'. After reading this book I wanted to find a Vietnam Vet and give him/her a hug, and say, "Thank you for serving."
As Dick mentions in the book: ..."as I deplaned, I was instantly sledge hammered with a blast of tropical heat...". I'm sure, based on some of his comments, the same description could be used to describe the way many "Nam Vets" were treated when they got back to the States; "sledge hammered" by quite a few ungrateful public.
As one who didn't serve I would like to say two things: Dick, thanks for serving, and thanks for the wonderful book, one that will captivate all who read it.
I know you being an educator, that your students, staff, and parents whose lives you came in contact with, benefited from the life enduring skills you had to learn to stay alive, and take each day as it was thrust upon you. A terrific book. I can't wait for your next one.
A fellow teacher/educator/friend
REVIEW FROM A 4TH INFANTRY SOLDIER.......2003-07-18
I ordered APO 96490 and received it yesterday at 2 P.M. I immediately started reading (recalling, digesting) and you guessed it .... at 10 p.m. I finished (I'm a slow and thorough reader). So many of the accounts paralleled my year (1970) in Nam. The main differences were: (1) I was drafted from graduate school and spent 1970 in Nam, (2) I was married, (3) I had a one year old son, (4) I was with the 4th Infantry, (5) I took an R&R to Hawaii in August to see my wife and son, (6) I was actually stationed at An Khe, (7) most of my friends attended Sunday chapel with me, and (8) I was welcomed back from Nam (from family, friends and my church family) with open arms and thanked for a job well done. Your accounts brought back many "new" memories, which I thought I had forgotten. I have been able to locate my best buddy in Nam and unfortunately he has never been able to "put it behind". I definitely will suggest he read this wonderfully written book and try drawing on its content. Even though it is just 212 pages, it is packed with volumes of information that only the vet will be able to fully appreciate. Looking forward to your next book.
On at personal note: Richard Stahl and I graduated from Sandwich High School together in 1963. We both attended the 40th class reunion this year (2003). Ed (from the book) also graduated with us and was at the reunion. Richard was one of the most popular and most liked kids in the class; he was a "brain", not a "nerd", and very athletic. He had great family roots in Sandwich (his parents were wonderful, common, down to earth people- his dad was known and loved by everyone in Sandwich- about 3000 people in 1963). God bless you, your wife and family.
A Nonstop Read.......2003-02-10
As a reader of APO 96490 I must say Stahl held my interest throughtout the entire book. I found myself feeling somewhat guilty all snuggled up on my couch with the fireplace burning, while Stahl vividly describes being shot at while in a bunker.
Stahl does an excellent job of educating the reader in regards to military terminology and jargon which provides insight into how the military functions and operates.
I especially enjoyed Stahl's ability to recreate the sights, sounds, smells, and feel for the surroundings he was placed in. As one reads, the mind can capture the very situation being described.
APO 96490 takes the reader on a journey through the life of Stahl as he experienced Vietnam. One rides the roller coaster of emotion as you experience the highs and lows of military life during war.
After reading APO 96490 I have a much healthier respect for all of our servicemen and women who have served our country and fought during wartime.
GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!!!!!!!
Informative--felt like I was in Viet Nam.......2003-02-06
From page one through the entire book I felt like I was on an adverture with the arthur. I felt like I got to know him as a person and to appreciate the experience of being in the army. The vets got a raw deal coming out of the war and he portrayed that very well. It is both entertaining and and informative. Good fast read.

Customer Reviews:
The other reviewers are right on.......2007-09-09
Unfortunately, I bought the book while browsing, rather than doing my usual checkups on Amazon.
I like that the author approaches the four different aspects of reading people to give an overall sense of the person, rather than just focusing on body language or personality by itself. If I can find another book on the same subject but written better, then I'd love to read it. But I had to skim past the inane quizzes, the arrogant examples, and the oversimplified explanations. In doing so, I think I may have missed a few of the good points she probably makes. I know I'll try to re-read it, because there are some good things in the book, they're just more difficult to find.
Agree with others - fluff and arrogance.......2007-08-30
I agree with the other reviewers in labeling this book as "fluff" and an opportunity for the author to talk about how great she is. She uses extreme categories liberally throughout this book - trying to pigeon-hole people into descriptive categories that are narrow and negative. For someone with a terminal degree, she provided not one reference or citation to studies that she referred to while attempting to validate her points. This book is not scientifically based and there is NO way that Oprah would have this woman or her book on her show!
reading this book.......2007-07-07
Buying this book is a waste of money. Reading this book is a waste of time. The author is evidently narcissitic. The author is not shy about dropping names of the famous people she has treated. All the examples are of famous and affluent people she knows. The thoughts are only partially developed. She begins a subject and leaves you hanging. The chapters are very generic and things you already know. The book is an advertisement for herself and at the back she has a full page devoted to contacting her to do business with her. Your money and time would be well spent looking elsewhere for help on this subject.
the wrong focus.......2007-05-07
Trust yourself. There's no technique or set of behaviors to memorize. If you get a feeling from someone that doesn't connect to the words they're saying, don't suppress it. If you don't open yourself up to all of your sensory input, learning details will mean nothing.
Not very good.......2006-10-16
There's some useful information but it's extremely difficult to find through all the pointless little quizzes and stories about how awesome the author is at reading people.

Depression Era Recipes.......2007-01-06
As a child of the depression, it was a way of remembering what the women of that era had to do to feed families often larger than those of the 21st Century -- families of farmers fared much better that those in the industries (which often became defunct) and for white-collar workers when there was no money to pay their wages. We "murdered through", we thrived, we learned serious lessons to do more with less, and to substitute. Would not want to repeat the depression era, but feel very fortunate recipes were concocted to get us through it with a smile on our face.
A good book.......2002-01-07
Anyone who is into History will like this cookbook. Many of the recipes don't look appealing but it contains a lot of interesting facts about lifestyles in the 30's.

Mickey Lawler's Skydyes.......2006-07-10
I am very happy with this book. I'm going to attend a workshop with Mickey Lawler in August so I was pleased at how fast the book arrived. It is everything I expected it to be.
Great Book!.......2006-07-10
An inspiring and well written book that takes the guess work and mystery out of creating your own fabrics. Mickey's style is user-friendly, approachable and encouraging. The illustrations are good and Mickey's own fabric creations will inspire the reader to try their hand at this art form. I highly recommend this book!
Sky Dyes Mickey Lawler.......2003-09-17
A must have reference book for fabric painting.
Not what I thought! Even better!.......2003-07-16
I was reluctant to buy this book because there were only two reviews, and I usually like to have a little more of an idea on books I can't actually look at myself, but this book is fabulous. I thought it was about dying fabrics, because when most people refer to fabric painting they mean painting on fabric with dye; this book really means paint. Mickey uses fabric paints that still leave the fabric soft to the touch, not rough. The talent and inspirational pictures and examples in this book simply are breathtaking. I can't wait to buy the paints and begin. I think this book will do very well with Piecing by Ruth McDowell, which I also purchased. Thank you Mickey for a book that was worth the cost, ten times over.
Create Your Own!.......2002-11-11
After taking a fabric dying class one hot summer in the back parking lot of a favorite quilt shop, I fell in love with creating my own fabric for quilting and wearable art. When my teacher never came back to teach more I went looking for directions. Of course I had tie dyed in the 60s, did Batik in the 70s but never created my own sky fabric for my own lighthouse vest. So, I borrowed, purchased and reviewed many different books on Fabric painting until I found Skydyes. Mickey gave me the information on getting the right materials to create that perfect sun set, Cannon Beach rocks, and the wild Oregon surf! Create the fabric that you see in your own minds eye! You can do it!

Useful.......2002-05-09
This book describes more than just how to manage time -- as the title suggests, it's a holistic approach to attaining balance in one's entire life. The ideas in it are practical without being overly simplistic. The authors have a clear writing style, so that it's easy to follow what they are saying. The book starts with two short quizzes to help the reader determine what areas of their life might require more balance. The authors use examples liberally to illustrate their points. These examples are clear and relevant.
My one complaint about the book was that the authors did, at times, seem to try to push readers into purchasing materials from them to implement the Lifebalance system. The only resources they mention at the end of the book are their own materials -- I would've liked a full bibliography/suggested readings section. It is only this complaint that is keeping me from giving the book 5 stars. Despite this caveat, I still think this book is worthwhile. It would be a help to anyone who is trying to live a more rewarding life that allows them to achieve succes at work without sacrificing family time.
Another good book on balancing your life is..........2000-06-27
I haven't read this book yet (their other books are excellent), but if you're looking for books on balancing your life, I cannot recommend Alan Loy McGinnis' book "The Balanced Life : Achieving Success in Work & Love" too highly.

Balanced Life.......2004-03-09
I received this as a gift a as I read the book I was able to learn how to put all aspects of my life into a "Beautiful Balance". The authors have shared personal things that they have done in their lives to help them achieve their"beautiful" bodies(what ones of us haven't taken pictures out of magazines as our goal as to what we want to look like. God doesn't ask us to be frumpy, plain women that don't care how we look, he wants us to shine for him in everything we do. This book brought out that we are to be the reflection of Christ and in my mirror of Christ he was plain or frumpy. I hope that as you read this book you can gain some things to help you achieve and maintain that "Beautiful Balance for body and soul. Well done Cynthia and Charity.
Please, rethink your potential purchase........2004-01-10
Dear fellow searchers,
Please understand that I, like you, was looking for little encouragement in my personal life. This book, however, has only led to frustration. There is a lot of good in this book, but much produces cause for concern.
To suggest that a "Victoria's Secret Model" (p.45) should be one's standard for beauty is superficial at best and dangerous at worst. I have a friend who remarked that had she read this book during her more formidable years, she would have been trapped in the secular materialism evident in today's fashion-magazine culture. No one will ever look like the air-brushed women in Victoria's Secret. No one.
Another example is the author's remark: "God understands that people need nice clothes to fit into this world." (p. 170) God knows the inside of all of us. This book is detrimental, and serves to reinforce the meterialism of our present society.
Can we all look like our "favorite Victoria's Secret Model?" Should we, as believers in God, be concerned with another's appearence?
This is not the book I had anticipated. I highly recomend that you look somewhere else. Most of the book is unnecessary filler and disheartening for a Christian book.
Please understand that this is not meant to tear appart the authors. I am only concerned with the pain of women who will find this book as an unreachable standard.
Balnced and fun!.......2003-11-02
This book was a great reminder that women can strive to be beautiful while maintaining balance. I enjoyed reading it and only wished that it was longer... I'm anxiously waiting for book 2!

Customer Reviews:
Physical and Spiritual Vitality.......2004-10-13
Prevention is so much better than healing because it saves the labor of being sick. ~Thomas Adams
Cynthia Culp Allen and Charity Allen Winters have written a book about their love for God and their love for spiritual renewal through a reenergizing of the mind and body. While most books seem to put an emphasis on exercise routines and eating plans, the authors have added a new level of spirituality. The authors shed new light on Proverbs 31 and yes, there are many references to Christianity throughout the text.
"Both Charity and I want to become beautiful, healthy, balanced women of God, both in body and soul." ~Cynthia
The authors both struggled with various illnesses and spiritual temptations and show how an overemphasis on spirituality and an imbalanced attitude in regards to food can be detrimental. The authors make the point that you can go to church and yet totally neglect your body. Is your body not the temple of God? Cynthia and Charity describe how they struggled with their own illnesses to the point where they knew a change was needed.
Both authors seem to have read many health books and while their focus is on health, they also are concerned with the cancer of the soul and why we should all be concerned with our spiritual health. They also discuss things like gossip, forgiveness and commitment to spiritual principles. In the midst of all this, they also discuss aromatherapy, journaling, exercise routines, herbal teas and supplements for health.
To say this book is overflowing with ideas is an understatement. The authors also talk about future books they are planning or writing.
I think this book will be most appreciated by women who love God and who want to live a holy life dedicated to improving body, soul and spirit. Not only are the authors trying to live a life in accordance to Biblical principles, they are trying to encourage more women to also live a similar lifestyle.
If you are not interested in the spiritual part of this book, there is still much to learn and I found I was even more motivated to buy a Vita-Mix than ever before. I know I feel better when I eat a lot of salads and my energy level soars when I avoid certain foods, but I was not aware of why this was the case.
Throughout this book I found many helpful solutions. If you are interested in a low-salt diet, then there are ideas for a variety of salt substitutes. If you have yet to discover the benefits of Grapefruit Seed Extract, Green Tea or a number of antioxidants, then this book will show you why these items are essential to your health.
Are you struggling with depression, low energy levels, complete fatigue, weight problems or illnesses you know you have but doctors don't seem to understand? Then this book can be helpful in many regards. If you love to cook, you will find a few recipes. Although, I must say I hope the authors write a detailed cookbook for all of us who enjoy step-by-step instructions.
While the authors do at times border on spiritual exuberance (upbeat x 10) in their writing, this book could give many women hope. At times it is good to indulge in a little positive thought even if you are feeling slightly grouchy at the time. It can at least awaken our hearts to the possibility of joy.
For any woman struggling with PMS, bladder infections, abdominal pain or intense sugar cravings, this book can provide some insight into how you can wage a battle against candidiasis. The authors provide lists of medications and show you how simple lifestyle changes can improve your health.
I was actually surprised the author recommended artificial anything, including sweeteners. I find Stevia to be much more tasty than anything artificial. Even after reading this book, I'm not convinced that fat is the enemy, I still think it is carbohydrates in too high a quantity. I've also read that fructose is more damaging than sucrose. You might want to read The Metabolic Plan for more information.
Here are some ideas for your shopping list for health. I had all these supplements before reading this book. See individual reviews (with my own research) or research the following online:

Too Much Emphasis on Preaching the Bible.......2004-05-05
I originally wanted to read this book because of her magazine advertisment with a Vita-mix. I ordered a Vita-Mix and I thought she'd give many tips and experiences using the Vita-Mix for improving her health. Well was I wrong! The advertisment was very misleading. She didn't mention the Vita-mix at all (that I could find) except in the recipes and the most of her health plan was mixed with quotations from the Bible. I didn't buy the book for a Bible lesson. If I wanted a Bible lesson, I'd buy books on Chrisitanity. She even has an address to write to so you can learn more about the Bible in the back section.
There are many people who are not Christian who are looking for a healthy food plan. They are happy in there own religions and don't need her to preach to them. She should have kept religion out of her book, and stuck to the point of healthy eating, but I get the feeling she'd having nothing much to write about if she didn't. I felt like she was trying to convert me through-out the book. Her plan was nothing exceptional and mostly low carb with heavy meat eating. Didn't the Bible preach vegetarianism?

Book Description
In this second volume of interviews conducted by Nebraska judge Eli S. Ricker, he focuses on white eyewitnesses and participants in the occupying and settling of the American West in the nineteenth century. In the first decade of the twentieth century, as the Old West became increasingly distant and romanticized in popular consciousness, Eli S. Ricker (1842-1926) began interviewing those who had experienced it firsthand, hoping to write a multivolume series about its last days, centering on the conflicts between Natives and outsiders. For years Ricker traveled across the northern Plains, gathering information on and off reservations, in winter and in summer. Judge Ricker never wrote his book, but his interviews are priceless sources of information about that time and place, and they offer more balanced perspectives on events than were accepted at the time. Richard E. Jensen brings together all of Ricker's interviews with those men and women who came to the American West from elsewhere-settlers, homesteaders, and veterans. These interviews shed light on such key events as the massacre at Wounded Knee, the Little Bighorn battle, Beecher Island, Lightning Creek, the Mormon cow incident, and the Washita massacre. Also of interest are glimpses of everyday life at different agencies, including Pine Ridge, Yellow Medicine, and Fort Sill School; brief though revealing memoirs; and snapshots of cattle drives, conflicts with Natives, and the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. Richard E. Jensen retired as a senior research anthropologist at the Nebraska State Historical Society. He is the editor of Charles Allen's From Fort Laramie to Wounded Knee: In the West That Was and Rolf Johnson's Happy As a Big Sunflower: Adventures in the West, 1876-1880, both available in Bison Books editions.

Book Description
In 1801 the Moravians, a Pietist German-speaking group from Central Europe, founded the Springplace Mission at a site in present-day northwestern Georgia. The Moravians remained among the Cherokees for more than thirty years, longer than any other Christian group. John and Anna Rosina Gambold served at the mission from 1805 until Anna’s death in 1821. The principal author of the diaries, Anna, chronicles the intimate details of Cherokee daily life.
This edition of the diary includes the entire text in translation as well as a critical apparatus, contextual introductory material, and extensive notes. Rowena McClinton’s translation from German script, an archaic writing convention, makes these primary eyewitness accounts available in English for the first time. These diaries will be of immense value for understanding Cherokee culture and history during the early nineteenth century and missionary efforts in the South during this time. McClinton gained unlimited access to the diaries and other supporting documents for the completion of this project, published with the consent of the Moravian Church of the Southern Province.
Volume 1 includes diary entries from 1805–13, a preface, and an introduction. Volume 2 includes diary entries from 1814–21, the editor’s epilogue, and a names index and a subject index for both volumes.

Book Description
In 1897, five years after he won the Medal of Honor, General Nelson A. Miles published his memoirs, often cited and now made widely available in this two-volume Bison Book edition. While relating his own colorful adventures, General Miles also ranges over time and space, taking into account fur traders, trail blazers, gold seekers, and missionaries. The first volume described his service in the Civil War and his campaigns against the Indians on the northern plains.
Volume 2 follows General Miles to Washington Territory, where he com-mands the Department of Columbia, and finally to the Southwest, where he succeeds General George Crook in directing the fight against the Apaches. The pursuit of Geronimo is one of the many subjects illustrated here by Frederic Remington.
In his introduction to the second volume Robert Wooster notes the importance of this memoir as a document on the Indian wars, extremely revealing of the character of a difficult but competent general.
Customer Reviews:
Dissapointing..........2007-01-04
Readers should be aware that only volume 2 is available, focusing mostly on apache campaigns and post-indian war. Those interested in prior campaigns (civil war, sioux war of 1876-77) will therefore be frustrated...
The paperback is only Volume #2.......2004-03-13
I ordered this book thinking it was 1 book, but when it came it apparently is in 2 volumes and Amazon only sent Volume 2, even on the replacement order. So be aware of that until they get things fixed. Miles though in Volume 2 does write mostly a description of American cities, industry and people. Except for a few chapters on the Apache trouble it is more like a census. I hope someday to read Volume 1 and am disappointed things did not work out.
Miles' books detail the Indian Wars with historical accounts.......1998-04-10
General Nelson A. Miles wrote a detailed, history- filled accounts of the Red River Wars and other Indian battles. Illustrations by F. Remington were a big surprise to me, as it was of a direct relative, William F. Schmalsle, Indian Scout, Guide, and Courier. The rescue of the German Sisters is a heartfelt experience. The reader will feel like one is living in the Old West, with all the joys, adventures, and tribulations that the characters experienced. The references in the back offer one further insight into the past. As Miles was involved in other battles besides those with the Indians, the history buff will find a lot of references in the back of the book which will result in many hours of pleasurable research and reading. The General Miles history trail may lead you to a long lost relative, as I found out, with numerous sources of information. So try reading the General Miles books from your library and if you like, order them from Amazon and take them home, or take them camping in the woods and plains, visit the historical places mentioned.

These Books Rock !.......2007-09-30
These books are recent translations of the four major accounts of the De Soto expedition - the Gentleman of Elvas, Luys Hernandez de Biedma, Rodrigo Ranjel, and Garcilaso de la Vega, based on the account of the soldier Gonzalo Silvestre. They also include translations of a number of documents related to the expedition and its members.
The books represent a badly needed update of the older translations by Buckingham Smith. They give us a picture of a world of Native American societies with tens or hundreds of thousands of people, ruled by nobles and leaders in ranked hierarchies through ceremony, ritual and belief. And they represent our last real glimpse of these societies at the beginning of the end - before disease, warfare with Europeans, and the shattering effects of De Soto's entrada destroyed the most powerful and complex cultures north of Mesoamerica.
Archaeologist, historian, and ordinary reader alike will find these books fascinating and important.
Volume II: De Soto chronicle La Florida is second to Diaz.......1998-09-13
This work is a complete collection of chronicles for the De Soto expedition into La Florida (which is most of the south-east USA). Due to the fact that this work comprises two volumes of almost 600 pages each, I have so far only read volume II which is the complete account "La Florida" by Garcilaso de la Vega. Following others (including the Narvaez expedition that de Vaca relates) De Soto went into Florida to find gold and eventually settle the new land. Garcilaso used one captain from the expedition as his source and is a great storyteller, claiming his abhorrence of exaggerating the contents, much of it is told with the heroic chivalry and noble virtue of the times, whether speaking of Spaniards or Indians, and always some purposeful enthusiasm. If all you know of De Soto is that he was the first to see the Mississippi, that doesn't begin to say anything about what happens during the expedition, and even to the way those who were on it considered it afterwards. It shows also the real nature of the natives, showing great differences in their treatment of the Spanish, their use of slavery, and the brutatilty they showed towards other tribes. (Not as placid as Las Casas would have you believe). Also describing the native cultures and life-styles to some degree. All wonderful and interesting stories. The volumes contain some maps and black and white illustrations. Volume I contains all the other existant accounts including the more historical one by the Gentleman of Elvas. Well worth the price.

Book Description
Over 175 years ago George Catlin, American painter, writer and explorer, realized that the white settlers would eventually destroy the native cultures of North America. Devoting his life to preserving the Indian heritage, he traveled throughout the West sketching and painting hundreds of Indian portraits, village scenes, religious rituals and games. Eager to preserve the vanishing tribes and customs of the Native Americans through his art, his encounters with these fascinating people resulted in the book, The North American Indians, a collection of his letters with over 400 illustrations. Catlin toured Europe for eight years presenting his famous collection of portraits and sketches. As a result of this tour, Catlin published ADVENTURES OF THE OJIBBEWAY AND IOWAY INDIANS concentrating on these two intriguing tribes in this two-volume set.
Book Description
Algic Researches is widely regarded as the greatest work of the "Father of American Folklore," Henry Rowe Schoolcraft. Originally published in two volumes in 1839 and never before reprinted, Clearfield Company is pleased to release it in a consolidated edition, complete with a new introductory essay by folklorist W.K. McNeil.
Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early exponent of Native American culture and the most influential folklorist of his day. A one-time Indian agent and the son-in-law of an influential Chippewa, Schoolcraft eventually secured a position of respect and trust among the Native American tribesmen which in turn provided him "a favored place at an artesian outlet of Indian imaginative lore." Convinced that oral narratives provided a key for unlocking the mystery of American Indian origins that had puzzled earlier writers, Schoolcraft eventually amassed a large corpus of Indian traditions which he published in numerous articles and books, most notably in Algic Researches. By "Algic," Schoolcraft referred to that family of American Indian tribes that had become dispersed over a wide area between the Atlantic and the Alleghenies.
Algic Researches is the pivotal work in Native American folklore. Acclaimed in 1839 for its demonstration "of an oral imaginative lore among the aborigines of this continent," it helped to establish the Indian as the main subject of nineteenth century-folklore scholarship and demonstrated the importance of tales and legends in piecing together the history of Native Americans. The book also advanced the idea of comparative studies in folklore scholarship. Most important, given today's resurgent interest in Native American mythology, Algic Researches contained accounts of nearly fifty of the elemental myths and legends of the Odjibwa, Chippewa, Ottowa, Shawnee, Maskego, Saginaw, Algonquin, and Sioux.

The gripping World War II story of the torpedoing of the Japanese light cruiser Natori by the American submarine Hardhead, told from a unique and ironical point of view. Enemies to the death a half century ago, two naval officers from each of the fated ships came together to coauthor this compelling human drama of their battle, and of the heroic 300-mile lifeboat ordeal of the survivors.
With sensitivity, humility and pride, the authors share their bitter experiences with honesty and respect. They acknowledge each other's professionalism, and the patriotic duty that bound them to countries locked in mortal combat with each other. Every chapter contains examples of superb leadership, and gives the reader rare insights into the minds of the combatants on both sides. This powerful work brings the global realities of a brutal war down to the scale of the men who fought it, and each other--and who ultimately became respectful friends.
