Blood In Our Boots.......2003-02-01
I am writing this review to let other browsers know that the wrong Table of Contents is shown on this web site for the book Blood In Our Boots. This book is the story of Ed Haider who trained as a ParaTrooper in WWII and participated in the first jump into Sicily and ended up in the Stalag 2B. You will enjoy his story. I have listened to Ed tell these stories for the past few years, and his book has the same great "storytelling" qualities.
Book Description
Before Walt Disney died in December 1966, he assembled a dedicated team to create a new theme park near Orlando, Florida. Walt's brother Roy would eventually name the attraction Walt Disney World so that no one would ever forget whose dream it was. People who had worked for Walt since the 1950's designing, building, and operating Disneyland in Anaheim, California anchored the team.
Team members were guided in the years after Walt's death by asking each other, "What would Walt do?"; This question was asked countless times during the design and construction of the huge theme park. It was asked about issues involving quality, creativity, safety, and the guest experience. The team usually knew the answer would be that Walt would have done the right thing. The team knew what that right thing was, and they always did it, regardless of cost.
This book chronicles the experiences of a young Florida engineer who served the team during construction of Walt Disney World from 1968 to 1971. Mr. Miller suggests that Walt Disney World may be the highest quality construction project ever built.

Glad I got it at the library............2007-07-21
for had I paid money for this book, I would be quite upset. The book is written as if the reader has an IQ of 50. There are many typos and poor sentence construction. These typos are even evident on the back cover of the book. I am surprised an editor would have let this book go to publication in the way it stands. Even worse, the author uses a supposed history book about WDW to rant about his own political views. I don't care what one's political thoughts are when I am supposed to be reading a book about the design and construction of WDW. Several pages are devoted to the author's views about unions and past presidents. He states that Walt was anti-union, and then takes this opportunity to write a few pages on why HE is anti-union. Who cares? Then there is a favorite quote of mine on page 22, "Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President, and he seemed to me to be a real jerk." Again, what does this have to do with the topic on hand? There are many other great books about the creation of the theme parks and Disney's vision. Do not waste your time on this one.
Good but not exactly as expected..........2007-05-07
Being a Disney fanatic, I always seek out books about Disney and Disneyland/World. This book was very interesting in the fact that it was more about the author's life during the construction phase of WDW. It did contain some interesting nuggets of information regarding the park but it was mostly a personal story about the author, his family, friends and coworkers during the construction of WDW. Not exactly what I was hoping for but it was an interesting read.
Constructing A Dream.......2007-04-14
What Would Walt Do? is a first hand look through the eyes of a young civil engineer into the contruction of Walt Disney World from Walt's Seventh Premliminary Plan to Opening Day, 23 October 1971. It's a good read for engineering students, "wannabee" engineers and lovers of all things Disney. Readers will smile at the story of Levi, the arm wrestling champion of champions; the author's night on the town with an "Acadian Queen" and amused when engineers and technicians are dumped into a very cold Reedy Creek from a supposedly all terrain (including water) 4 wheel drive vehicle called a "Coot." The Coot was hoot!
Although the author had never met Walt Disney who died in 1966, he learned through the leadership of Walt's brother Roy and others with long standing at Disney to apply to difficult construction decisions, union conflicts, contractor disputes, quality control issues the question: "What Would Walt Do?" In their considering that question, the ideal always sought was to apply Walt's standards of quality and safety to accomplish even the smallest details in the spirit of Walt's Dream. The ultimate compliment came on opening day from Walt's widow Lily who said, "I think Walt would have approved."
Other accounts of this remarkable engineering/construction feat may be more technical or more historically accurate. However, WWWD gives insight not only into the day to day operation, construction ups and downs, but also into the personal lives of the men and women who helped to bring Walt's dream into a reality. They were a very special team who soon realized that after the gates had opened, the Boston Pops had played and Mickey had paraded....they had left a part of themselves in the dirt, steel and cement that covered hundreds of acres of Central Florida called Walt Disney World.
Skip This One.......2002-12-28
A very short book. No pictures. Lots of fluff. Information about the author that has nothing to do with Walt Disney takes up pages in the book. Stories about mean foremen and inspectors. Boring.
What would Walt do? He'd do it right no matter what the expense. There. Save your money and buy a good book on Disney.
Really an autobiography about the author - not about WD.......2001-12-26
The book was an easy read BUT was really an autobiography of the author and his life. It's about his working days, especially while working on the constrction of WDW. Besides the very infrequent mention of the title "What Would Walt Do" there was next to nothing in the book about Walt's philosophies, work ethic and thought processes. Not what I exptected or what the title infers.

Customer Reviews:
What Every Household Should Own.......2007-05-13
This book is a well-researched, knowledgeable, and informative guide that every household should own especially parents. It's certainly no substitute for a primary care physician, but it's the perfect source of diagnosis for minor things such as what to do during mild back pain, headaches, colds, flu, etc. It also covers allergies, nose and eye problems, cold sores, urinary tract infection, gall bladder, stomach aches, indigestion, etc. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the material, so if and when the time comes that you need to use this resource, you'll be a little familiar with your symptoms and the book. It's the perfect addition to a first aid kit. It's clear and easy to read but not so vague that it's unhelpful. I recommend this to everyone!
Provides fast, easy answers to common health-care questions .......2004-11-10
From addressing everyday health problems and minor injuries to healing faster and managing chronic conditions effectively, What Nurses Know And Doctors Don't Have Time To Tell You provides fast, easy answers to common health-care questions nurses hear most often. Nurse Patricia Carroll has more than 20 years experience as an RN and ER nurse: she's chosen the most common patient questions and provides treatment plans and solutions for patients and families alike.
What Nurses Know.......2004-07-22
Outstanding - and I am a nurse. The advice is for any one who has a parent or is a parent and helps make sense out of the world of medicine. Physicians are overloaded and Ms. Carroll helps docs help patients. I wish physicians would give copies to their patients!
What Patients Should Know But Don't.......2004-06-03
As an attorney who deals with medical issues every day, I found Pat Carroll's book to be and excellent blend of science and common sense advice to patients and their families. Whether the subject is safety when traveling, immunizations, or how to get the most out of your relationship with your physician, the book dispenses excellent advice.
New mothers will find the book very helpful, and so will those who may lack formal education in health subjects. Like her advice not to clean out cuts with peroxide, the advice she dispenses often goes against "the way we've always done it," but it never goes against established medical and nursing science. Readers will learn many things they should know, but most likely do not.
This is a book that everyday consumers and patient educators will find priceless.
Impressive!.......2004-06-02
Ms. Carroll has done an incredible job of explaining medical conditions so they can be easily understood by the lay person. More than this, she describes common sense treatments that can be implemented at home, versus when the condition warrants a call to the health care provider. Signs and symptoms necessitating an immediate trip to the ER are also listed. The book begins with a terrific explanation of the differences between nursing practice and the practice of medicine that dispels the myth that nurses are the handmaidens of the physician. She uses the principles of sound nursing judgment in the advice she gives throughout the book. Many resources (including her own website) are listed for further information. Written in a warm, down to earth style, this is an invaluable book for lay persons, and a reference that nurses can recommend to others with confidence.

Customer Reviews:
Won me over.......2005-12-20
I was a little skeptical when I first picked this up, though admittedly for no good reason (maybe I'm a sucker for photos or general "hipness"--this book has neither). Some of the dishes I prepared because I had the ingredients already, but I had a feeling the recipes would be underseasoned or just not exciting. But no, everything was delicious, and my husband loved it as well.
It's also good for trying to wean yourself/family from meat-heavy dinners. We really enjoyed the beef and broccoli stir-fry, for example, which is lightened up simply with a higher proportion of vegetables. So too with the meat loaf.
I refuse to do "diet" cookbooks, so my other reference for lightening up my cooking is Sally Schneider's A New Way to Cook, which I also highly recommend. That book has the style, size (700+ pages), photographs, and glamour over this one, but Lighter,Quicker, Better is far more accessible in terms of ingredients and attitude, and I haven't been disappointed once.
OUTSTANDING..........2005-08-22
I own dozens of cookbooks but this is one I use consistently. In fact, I have two of them (from a time when we had a weekend house). I've made dozens of the recipes and have been pleased every single time. If you are looking for healthy, delicious meals that will gain you kudos from family and guests alike, this cookbook is for you.
Delicious.......2001-05-12
I've tried many of the recipes in this book which have delighted my whole family, kids included. Each dish I've tried has been full of flavor. There are recipes here which are becoming regulars in my weekly reperetoire. I'm buying a copy today as a gift for my mother.
Happy chef.......2001-02-20
I was looking for gifts for my sisters-in-law, and decided I had to have a copy of this for myself as well. I've tried several of the recipes, and so far have had great success. My husband is a fairly picky eater - if he doesn't like it, he will politely but firmly refuse to eat it. So far, he has asked for seconds on everything!
The only warning I would make is that for the uninitiated, there is a fair amount of prep work in many of the recipes. A lot of the recipes are based on fresh vegetables, and they need preparation (peeling and chopping). Once you get past that, though, the recipes go together quickly, with delicious results.
Terrific Cookbook.......2000-02-15
I've tried quite a few of the recipes in this cookbook and all of them have been easy and produced extremely satisfying results. This is definitely the best cookbook geared toward healthier eating that I've encountered.

Book Description
Now that author Mimi Dietrich has five cancer-free years behind her, she has combined her quilt-making talents and her experience with breast cancer to create an inspiring book of quilt projects especially for women-and the people who love them-struggling with the disease. Quilters of all skill levels can create a quilt to brighten a day in the life of a breast-cancer patient, survivor, or care-giver, and join Mimi and thousands of other women in the enduring fight to find a cure. 11 step-by-step projects include a comfort pillow, friendship quilts, and large raffle quilts-all using a pink-ribbon theme or pink fabric. Mimi's personal story reveals how quilting helped in her recovery, and shares her tips on what friends of women with breast cancer can do to help. A portion of the proceeds from Pink Ribbon Quilts will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book........2007-01-14
The ladies where I work have this book and after seeing it so did I. I am selecting my fabrics now. Nice ideas, good cause. There probably are not too many of us that don't know someone who has been touched by breast cancer. I want to give mine to a dear friend. Good book to have and use.
Pink Ribbon Quilts: A Book Because of Breast Cancer.......2007-01-12
Great book to cheer, support and grieve when breast cancer strikes. The patterns and ideas are great. There is something for everyone. I originally borrowed this book from a friend, but then decided it is one of the books I have to have for my collection.
Breast Cancer Survivor loves Pink Ribbon Quilts.......2004-02-17
Before I developed breast cancer, I saw an episode of Simply Quilts on HGTV featuring the author of this book and was SO inspired by it. While recovering from surgery and radiation therapy in 2001, I made several Pink Ribbon blocks with a pattern from Pink Ribbon Quilts and gave to breast cancer survivors. I'm sure in the near future, I'll be tackling one of the beautiful quilts patterns in the book. I would highly recommend this book to any quilter and/or breast cancer survivor.
Come for the Cause, Stay for the Designs.......2000-04-17
The title attracted my attention because one of my stitching friends had recently lost her battle with breast cancer. But after leafing through the book I realized I had to add it to my growing collection of quilt books because it had so many wonderful designs, all made easy by speed cutting techniques and easy-to-read diagrams. The designs are a combination of traditional patches (with fresh colorways) and some original designs. All skill levels are represented, so the projects can challenge the experienced or provide quick yet exquisite results for the beginner.
The fact that a portion of the proceeds of this book go to breast cancer research should mitigate any guilt you might feel about adding yet ANOTHER book to your collection. But this book will not duplicate any other you own -- it stands on its own merits both as a quilting book and as a dispenser of helpful advice to those who are affected by breast cancer (either their own or that of a friend or loved one).
a unique addition to the plethora of quilting books.......1999-11-18
I highly recommend this Mimi Dietrich book for the following reasons: 1.The 11 step-by-step projects range in size and difficulty, but most are small and personal and the kind of items one can make and give as gifts. These are not involved projects that take years to complete! 2.The pages of tips that accompany the quilts are full of sound advice for friends and caregivers as well as for cancer patients themselves. 3.Two percent of the net sales benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (one of the largest private funders of research in the U.S. dedicated soley to breast cancer). The book is a gift to quilters and patients alike! We buy the book; they get more funds for research!

Book Description
Hemp,
Cannabis sativa, has been called the world's most versatile plant. Materials made from hemp fiber have been discovered in tombs dating back to 7000 B.C. During the Middle Ages hemp was used to treat fevers, insomnia, and malaria. Columbus's ships had sails of hemp, and during colonial times it was universally grown because its strong fibers made superior ropes, sails, cloth, and paper. In fact, hemp was used for money in most of the Americas from 1631 until the early 1800s, and the original drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written on hemp paper.
As a food, the oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of essential fatty acids and the lowest percentage of saturated fats. Britain and Canada have recently lifted bans on growing industrial hemp and today it is reappearing in the marketplace in an amazing array of products: from lip-salve, jeans, salad oil, and cheese to paper products, composite fiberboard, and biomass fuel.
This illustrated, easy-to-read guide covers all aspects of hemp:
• The history of its cultivation worldwide
• Its role as a source of renewable energy and as an alternative for paper manufacturing and fossil fuels
• Its versatility as a fiber
• Its many nutritional and medicinal uses
• Examines the physiological and psychological effects of marijuana use in recreation and therapy
• A comprehensive resource section includes information on organizations involved in legalizing hemp, product suppliers, and an annotated bibliography.

Most Informative Book on Uses of a Wonderous Plant.......2007-10-06
This is one of the most Informative works on the subject of Hemp that I have read in 20 years. I have been researching Hemp & Marijuana for over 40 years. To date this is one of the most educational compilations of information on the subject that I have found. If everyone in America were made aware of the information in this book, the insanity of the Hemp/marijuana war being waged in this country by overzealot/misinformed
Law Makers and Enforcers would end. Then we could begin building a Billion dollar industry that will save the countries farmers and the world would be a better place.
Mind Blowing .......2007-01-25
Very insightful,I had only learned the negative effects in school and growing up. This plant could really could really help heal our planet.
Hemp Manifesto.......2005-03-24
This is an excellent starter for your search on important facts about hemp and its commercial uses. There are some medical notes in this for those interested. I had the money to purchase a million copies I would give them away. Ho hum. No mun! Please take the facts in this book real serious. No joking. This is a must read for all even you smart ass stoners.

Wonder drug or social menace? The perennial question may never be answered, as factions on both sides hold fast to their beliefs. Doctors and scientists hail its medicinal merits while politicians and others insist that cannabis, in any form, is the first step down the slippery slope to serious drug addiction. This book explores all views to form an honest contemporary picture. Dozens of photographs are included.

Book Description
Wallace Putnam (1899-1989) burst upon the New York art scene in 1936 with a large assemblage provocatively entitled Agog, prominently displayed in the entranceway to a major exhibition of Dadaist and Surrealist art at The Museum of Modern Art. Though he went on to create a highly innovative body of work that was shown in major museums, Putnam remains underappreciated, deserving of the reassessment that this first study of his art will stimulate.
Putnam's work is largely figurative, with elements of abstraction. Art lovers will relish this opportunity to discover a significant yet too-long-ignored artist whose paintingsappealing, colorful canvases depicting the human figure, birds, animals, and landscapescan today be found in major private and public collections.
Customer Reviews:
"Out" of the "In" Crowd.......2002-07-12
This book is an overdue shaft of light on the life and work of an artist who not only displayed intense emotions in a style skimming the edge of representation, but who also scaled the conceptual depths of what constituted painting, writing and sculpture. Admirers of Duchamp, Rauschenberg, Johns, early Pop Art, Katz, and the New Image and Neo-Expressionists of the seventies and eighties will marvel at seeing all but Duchamp antedated by many years. Though a close friend of Avery and Rothko, familiar with the Abstract Expressionists, Putnam somehow was left standing at the gate. The only regret is the limited coverage of his long marriage to his more famous wife, Consuelo Kanaga, a pioneering photographer. If you distrust the way history picks and chooses its favorites, this is the book to place on the shelf next to Avery, whose best paintings look tame next to Wallace Putnam's, and Rothko, who seemed mired in one overly serious mode for too many years. Putnam was inventive, spiritual, humorous, and a survivor.
Book Description
First published in 1776, the nine gothic tales in this collection are Japan's finest and most celebrated examples of the literature of the occult. They subtly merge the world of reason with the realm of the uncanny and exemplify the period's fascination with the strange and the grotesque. They were also the inspiration for Mizoguchi Kenji's brilliant 1953 film Ugetsu.
The title Ugetsu monogatari (literally "rain-moon tales") alludes to the belief that mysterious beings appear on cloudy, rainy nights and in mornings with a lingering moon. In "Shiramine," the vengeful ghost of the former emperor Sutoku reassumes the role of king; in "The Chrysanthemum Vow," a faithful revenant fulfills a promise; "The Kibitsu Cauldron" tells a tale of spirit possession; and in "The Carp of My Dreams," a man straddles the boundaries between human and animal and between the waking world and the world of dreams. The remaining stories feature demons, fiends, goblins, strange dreams, and other manifestations beyond all logic and common sense.
The eerie beauty of this masterpiece owes to Akinari's masterful combination of words and phrases from Japanese classics with creatures from Chinese and Japanese fiction and lore. Along with The Tale of Genji and The Tales of the Heike, Tales of Moonlight and Rain has become a timeless work of great significance. This new translation, by a noted translator and scholar, skillfully maintains the allure and complexity of Akinari's original prose.
Customer Reviews:
A Moonlight Drive with Ueda Akinari.......2007-01-10
Ueda Akinari's classic work of eerie fiction has been translated before quite a few times and always with obvious dedication and care, but when it comes right down to it this version by Anthony Chambers outdoes the others and will doubtlessly remain the definitive English "Tales of Moonlight and Rain" for some time. Of course, it's hard to go wrong with such a fine series of stories, each of which is really a masterpiece of storytelling; they may be strange, haunting, macabre, mysterious, or whimsical, but they're never dull, and it's no mystery why this Tokugawa classic still grips readers centuries later in Japan and abroad. Still, Chambers' rendition stands out in faithfully capturing Ueda's densely allusive, rich prose style with meticulous care, and indeed this is a key factor in elevating "Ugetsu Monogatari" above a host of other, similar works of the time. In so doing, Chambers has deliberately avoided overtranslating Ueda to sound English or twentieth-century, allowing the 18th-century Japanese flavor of the original to come to the fore. Paradoxically as it may seem at first blush, this makes the stories much more compelling actually. Just compare this passage as rendered by Leon Zolbrod (whose translation I've read and treasured for many years, so please no offense) with Chambers' more accurate rendition:
[ No sooner did he open the door of the sleeping chamber, than a demon thrust its head out at the priest. The projecting extremity was so huge that it filled the doorway, gleaming even whiter than newly fallen snow, with eyes like mirrors and horns like the bare boughs of a tree. The creature opened its mouth more than three feet wide; its crimson tongue darted, as if to swallow the priest in a single gulp.
'Horror!' cried the holy man, as he dropped the flask that he held in his hand. His legs no longer able to support him, he fell over backwards and crawled away, barely managing to escape.
'It's awful. The creature is a god of evil; my prayers are useless. If I hadn't got away on hands and knees, I'd surely have lost my life,' he said, losing consciousness.] (Zolbrod, page 180)
[He advanced toward the bedroom. The moment he opened the door, a giant snake thrust out its head and confronted him. And what a head this was! Filling the door frame, gleaming whiter than a pile of snow, its eyes like mirrors, its horns like leafless trees, its gaping mouth three feet across with a crimson tongue protruding, it seemed about to swallow him in a single furious gulp. He screamed and threw down the flask. Since his legs would not support him, he rolled about and then crawled and stumbled away, barely making his escape. To the others he said, "Terrible! It is a calamitous deity; how can a monk like me exorcise it? Were it not for these hands and feet, I would have lost my life." Even as he spoke, he lost consciousness.] (Chambers, page 178)
The first gets the point across fine, but the second just sort of grabs you somehow.
The extensive and exhaustive annotations, the interesting and informative introduction, and the fine reproductions of the original woodcut illustrations from the 1776 edition all add to the overall reading experience. I found the intro especially interesting in analyzing the total structure of the work, demonstrating that it's far from a random assortment tossed together; kind of like a symphony or a good concept album, each story reflects on and informs the others for a total effect. And in general, this book manages a wonderful synthesis of the scholarly and the literary that does full justice to Ueda's erudite and engaging moonlit, rainy tales.
A valuable translation, badly edited........2007-01-08
I was excited to see these stories were translated and waited six months for it to be finally published. I liked the scholarly and detailed introductions to each. The stories are subtle and engaging in a typical Japanese manner. I'd like to know who made the editorial decision to split the footnotes into two sections, one at the bottom of the page and the others at the end of the chapter. It makes for maddening reading, contantly have to refer to both in order to fully comprehend the story.

Book Description
This is the only complete catalogue of the nearly four hundred Sanskrit manuscripts contained in the Rare Book Library at Columbia University. The collection is especially strong in works on mathematics and astronomy, assembled by David Eugene Smith (1860-1944), Professor of Mathematics at Teachers College from 1901 to 1926. In addition to scholarly descriptions of the manuscript and the works they contain, the volume has numerous indices covering the persons, places, titles, and dates associated with the manuscripts.
