                  Book Description

The present-day New York city neighborhood of Harlem was founded in the mid-17th century by Dutch Protestants, whose numbers included Huguenots (or their descendants) who had fled the counter-Reformation in France and the Walloon provinces of Artois, Cambresis, and Hainalt. Riker's Harlem is an extremely detailed historical and genealogical account of Harlem from its establishment by Kuyter and Stuyvesant between 1656 and 1660 to the end of the 17th century. Following several preliminary chapters on the Dutch and French context for the settlement of "New Haerlem," the author treats us to what seem like minute-by-minute accounts of its colonial development, including early efforts to settle the territory that became Harlem, the original land patents and their subsequent rearrangement, Indian wars, displacement of Dutch rule by the British in 1663 (and the brief reoccupation by Dutch forces in 1673), 17th-century village life, migrations to New Jersey, influx of Swedes, difficulties in assimilating English ways, and much, much more. Notwithstanding the historical detail, genealogists will be delighted to know that more than half of Riker's 900 pages are occupied with multi-generational accounts of the lineages of the following Harlem patentees and their heirs or successors: Benson, Bogert, Brevoort, Bussing, Delamater, Dyckman, Haldron, Kiersen, Kortright, Low, Montanye, Myer, Nagel, Oblenis, Parmentier, Tourneur, Vermilye, Verveelen, and Waldron. The name index at the back of the volume refers to over 15,000 descendants of Harlem's founding fathers.

Out of print for nearly a century, Riker's Harlem is the first, if not the last, word on the origins of this famous section of Manhattan.

                        Book Description

This is the first volume of a comprehensive scientific biography of Hans Krebs, one of the world's foremost biochemists. It treats his childhood, his medical education and scientific apprenticeship under Otto Warburg, his emergence as an independent investigator, and his discovery of the urea cycle in 1932. This early achievement, and his discovery of the citric acid cycle, are viewed as foundations for the modern structure of intermediary metabolism. During the writing of this fascinating history, the author had access to a complete set of Krebs' laboratory notebooks that reveal the daily dimensions of scientific creativity. Based in addition on many personal interviews with its subject, the Krebs biography is certain to interest and intrigue biochemists and historians of science alike. Volume 2: Hans Krebs: Architect of Intermediary Metabolism 1933-37, will appear in spring, 1993.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Informative Introduction to World of Viruses.......2005-01-12

In an age with threats of bioterrorism and the ever present threat of global pandemics, with the rapid growth in knowledge in the biological sciences, it is difficult if not nearly impossible to fathom what is going on. Several years ago I decided to educate myself in the areas of molecular biology, immunology, and infectious disease. My only formal training in the biological sciences was high school biology from over 40 years ago. I read articles in Scientific American, Discover Magazine, numerous books, both textbooks and popular books, and found myself not seeing the forest for the trees. Then I found Dr. Sompayrac's books, "How the immune system works," and "How pathogenic viruses work." My usual words of praise are "not bad," but in the case of these books, I have to say "excellent." Dr. Sompayrac somehow manages to present the forest without neglecting the trees in a highly entertaining, readable, and informative manner. Both books are short, but rich in content presented in a well-organized manner with appropriately placed brief reviews. After reading his books, I then went back to some of the others and found that everything just fell into place.

I have already recommended both to numerous friends. Not only should these books be read by any lay person interested in modern biology, infectious diseases, and immunology, but public health workers, high school teachers, undergraduate students and teachers should all find these books worth reading and using as references. I actually wrote to Dr. Sompayrac suggesting he follow up with a book on "How pathogenic bacteria work," and I can only hope that he does.

5 out of 5 stars From the author:.......2002-04-06

I'm the guy who wrote this book. I thought it might useful to tell you a little about what's in it -- and why I wrote it.

There are many books which employ viruses as tools to teach molecular and cellular biology. This makes sense. A lot of what we know about these subjects was learned by observing how viruses usurp the biochemical machinery of their host cells. However, these texts tend to treat viruses as bit players, focusing mainly on the cells they inhabit. Consequently, such a book can teach you a lot about cell biology, but it usually won't give you much insight into the "mind of the virus." In How Pathogenic Viruses Work, the virus occupies center stage, because my goal is to give you an overall picture of virus-host interactions from the point of view of the virus.

There are also big, heavy books that seem to contain every possible detail about every virus in the universe. These texts are great for reference, but they give the impression that viruses are incredibly complicated and almost impossible to understand. In fact, viruses are quite simple. They really only know how to solve three problems, and the diseases viral infections cause are the consequences -- frequently the unintended consequences -- of the different ways viruses solve these problems.

How Pathogenic Viruses Work is written in the form of "lectures," because I want to talk to you directly, just as if we were together in a classroom. In this book, I focus on the important concepts, and leave out as much detail as possible. I also limit my discussion to viruses that cause diseases in humans. Lord knows, there are plenty of them, and to me (and probably to you), these viruses are really the most interesting ones.

Your professor may use this book as the core text for a course, supplementing these lectures with fascinating facts about his or her favorite viruses. Alternatively, your professor may use this book as a course preview, both to provide you with a global view of how pathogenic viruses work, and to give you "pegs" on which to hang more detail as the course progresses.

But no matter how your professor may choose to use this book, you should keep one thing in mind: I didn't write this book for your professor. This book's for you!

                        5 out of 5 stars A review from a layman.......2002-04-04

I'll admit to being intimidated by a book titled "How Pathogenic Viruses Work." Being a well educated layman more attuned to marketing than medicine, I expected to be completely lost while reading about the various bugs that invade our bodies and how the body calls to battle its natural defenses.

However, I was rescued by some of the best writing and the most logical presentation I have ever read. This is no small claim as I have published over 150 articles for high tech magazines covering some very detailed topics in computing. My hat is off to Sompayrac for communicating complex topics in a style that is both clear and entertaining.

Sompayrac organized his book in the very way I would want to study the subject. His opening chapters (which he calls "lectures") deal with the way viruses "think" and the three basic problems that all viruses must address in order to survive. Sompayrac's explanations bring home the mechanics of Darwinism that viruses face when invading our bodies or breading themselves in cross-species transplants.

Sompayrac then discusses how viruses enter our bodies (inhalation, orally, through birth and through sex) and why each path has its advantages for specific viruses. For each entry method, Sompayrac discusses three unique viruses and how they conquered the problems of replication, spreading and evasion of host defenses. Sompayrac finishes the book by discussing the tactics that modern medicine is employing or testing to combat viruses. The discussion of tactics and their usefulness or dangerousness in regard to HIV is most illuminating.

Unique to this work - and hopefully for Sompayrac's other books including a rumored book on cancer - is his light, almost playful style of writing that keeps the reader riveted to the discussion despite the occasional need to drill down into medical jargon. Despite being only a layman limited by a typical array of college biology electives, I read, understood and enjoyed the entire book. I walked away with new insights into the miracles of life - ours and those microscopic life forms that occasionally try to kill us.

Had I encountered this book in high school or college I suspect I would have changed my major from technical and business realms to medicine and virology. Sompayrac's insights show these worlds to be compelling, intricate and violent places where the very fate of mankind may lay.

Now available in paperback, the acclaimed Il Fornaio Baking Book celebrates the Italian culinary legacy of both staunch traditionalism and irrepressible innovation. Over 70 classic and inventive recipes from the kitchens of Il Fornaio's renowned bakeries, restaurants, and cafes are interwoven with author Franco Galli's heart-warming family memories and fascinating pieces of lore. Find traditional and specialty breads, pizza, focaccia, and other savory dishes as well as a temptingly sweet selection of biscotti, cakes, and tarts--all with easy-to-follow recipes. Generously illustrated with hand-toned photographs, this great book--at a great new value--is perfect for anyone with a passion for baking. Franco Galli started his career as a baker's apprentice in northern Italy at the age of ten. He came to the United States in 1979, where he developed menus for several well-known California restaurants before joining San Francisco-based Il Fornaio America in 1987.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Good.......2005-03-01

I live in the San Francisco-Bay Area, where Il Fornaio is a legendary chain of Italian bakeries where you can get fabulous bread. Unfortunately, this book is not as good as the bread.

The highlight of the book is the bread in the first chapter, but I note the following deficiencies:
                        1) The recipes for Pagnotta, ciabatta, pane toscano, and sfilatano (which all use the same dough) are not the ones I have eaten from the bakery.
                        2) biga acida isn't. Their recipe may work in commercial bakeries that are laden with yeast spores in the air, but in a home kitchen that has never made bread, all you will get is moldy flour batter.
                        3) all breads are kneaded and proofed in exactly the same time; I doubt that this is correct, since this will vary with the hydration level of the dough.
                        4) The instructions call fo 20 + 5 minutes of manual kneading, and this is not correct. When I did it, they required a mere 10 minutes.
                        5) the author commits the baker's sin of not specifying flour amounts by weights.
                        6) when I did them, the rather informal nature of the recipes bothered me, as I was not sure that an amateur who has never made bread before will have success with them.
                        7) when placing dough into the oven, all the recipes inveigh "with a rythmic snap of the wrist". Problem is, the author never fully explains what this means.
                        8) I have similar complaints about the chapters on special breads, little breads, and pizzas.

On the good side, the bread dough make-up instructions use kneading by hand, and not a mixer. The recipe selection for the traditional bread chapter is very good, as it has all of the really popular ones that you would want. On the other hand, the informal and friendly nature of the instructions will encourage more people to try them, and this is a good thing.

I have not really gone through the recipes in the last 2 chapters on cookies or sweets. The recipe count is rather low - 13 and 16 respectively - but the recipes are the popular ones you will most want to do. The problem here is that the instructions are rather informal. The procedures for Torta D'Alassio (like a Sacher torte that uses the modified creaming method and hazelnuts) and Pasta Frollo (tart dough) are not easy to do correctly, but the recipes are casually tossed off in a couple of brief sentences, in the same space it uses to describe how to do garlic toast. You will also need a hand-held electric mixer; no alternatives are provided.

The book suffers from side-bar mania. Brief stories or helpful hints are in small, italicized type in side-bars that are of dark, brown color; they are difficult to read, even if the lighting at your reading table is very good.

It has chapters on traditional breads, special breads, little breads, pizza, leftover bread recipes, cookies, sweets.

                        5 out of 5 stars A great author and a great book.......2001-08-25

Trust me when I say that franco galli is a master chief in the kitchen and the recipes in this book ar no different from the ones he uses in the kitchen. Not only does the book give your great recipes, but tells you how each recipe relate to his life, and it's all true.I recomend everyone buy it who is interested in Italian cooking, or baking, or cooking in general.

For anyone that has had the opportunity to visit one of their restaurants, now you can enjoy their baked goods at home. All of their receipes are fairly easy to follow and follow you must! These dishes are a lot like a science project. mix the wrong item or quantity and it is all over. Follow closely and you will be rewarded with some of the finest breads and desserts around. The Tiramisu receipe is one of the best around. I have served it several times and it is a party favorite. I have tried countless other receipes and found this one the best their is. The soups can make a complete meal in themselves. Buy this book and you won't regret it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Bread.......2001-01-17

The recipes in this book are described so well that even a novice baker will turn out world class loaves of bread. All through my college years I worked in a Pizza restaurant. I made pizza dough by following the directions on the 25lb bag of pizza flour. That had been my only baking experinece, but after deciding to attempt baking bread at home, I bought this book. My first loaf turned out better than anything I could buy at a supermarket.

5 out of 5 stars The only bread book you really need.......2000-02-20

I use this book on a weekly basis. The formulas are relatively easy to use, and you end up with flavorful crusty loaves of bread. The pizza dough recipe is the best I have found. I have tried other books, with varying degrees of success, but this book is always helpful. The hardest thing to remember to make the starter ahead of time. I have found that most of the recipes can be adjusted successfully if you want a higher whole grain content or you wish to add other flavoring ingredients (ie roasted garlic or sundried tomatoes).

                                          Description:
Within species habitat use may depend on age, season or sex of an individual. The distribution of males and females may vary both temporally and spatially due to differences in the costs of reproduction and the distribution of critical resources. Conservation of a species requires knowledge of the habitat use of both sexes in order to predict the population size and protect all habitats that a species requires. Adult dragonfly populations often have highly male-biased sex ratios at the breeding habitat. This bias has been attributed to females using alternative habitats to avoid male harassment, or to high female mortality. We monitored adult Hine's emerald dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana Williamson) populations, in breeding and non-breeding habitats in Door County, Wisconsin and found significant differences in habitat use between males and females. Males primarily used wetland habitats, while females primarily used dry meadows and marginal breeding habitats, only coming into wetlands to lay-eggs or find mates. We assessed food resources in the different habitats and found that high quality insect prey (primarily adult Diptera) were more available in the wetland habitat, indicating that these areas were likely a more productive foraging area for adult dragonflies. The fact that females appear to avoid the wetland habitat is consistent with the hypothesis that male harassment alters female distribution patterns. Consideration of the patterns of habitat use by S. hineana indicates the need to develop a broader understanding of the importance of non-wetland areas in the conservation of wetland species.

If you're tired of making "recipe" quilts that simply duplicate what someone else has designed, and you're ready to take charge of planning your own quilts, you'll find the help you need in this excellent reference. Overflowing with solid, practical advice on equipment, fabrics, cutting, basic quilt-block settings, yardage calculation, piecing strategies, even setting up a wonderful workspace, The Art of Classic Quiltmaking aims to allay the trepidations of quilters who long to expand control over their quilting endeavors. With lucid text, hundreds of clear diagrams, and lovely color photos of both antique quilts and their own work, the authors demystify such intimidating concepts as drafting your own patterns, reducing what many quilters fear is a complex mathematical exercise into a more approachable series of simple calculations. Although the authors provide no step-by-step projects (this would, after all, defeat their stated purpose to teach quilters to think for themselves), they do offer detailed explanations on constructing several basic patterns, set-in and curved-seam piecing, quilting the completed product, and finishing techniques. In other words, if you've got a bit of quilt-making experience and want to make a more personal statement with your creations, this volume will show you how to go from raw material to a finished quilt you can be truly proud of. --Amy Handy

                                            Book Description

Readers follow quiltmaking from start to finish, sharpening their skills with every page as they learn to calculate yardage, choose tools, apply piecing techniques, and create overall and border designs. Stepped exercises are loaded with answers to such frequent questions as "Where do I go next?" or "What went wrong?"

I found this book in a used bookstore and I recognized the authors names, so I bought it..and am I glad I did!..I love this book!..I am constantly referring to it for invaluable techniques..I like the fact that they each has a different way of doing the techniques, because I have found that if Harriet's way doesn't work for me, then Sharon's usually does, and visa-versa..It is like having a quilt teacher right there with you...The directions are clear and concise.. An excellent, excellent book..Definately one of my all-time favorites

I got this book about 6 months ago and have refered to it numerous times as I have learned my way through my first quilts. I find it particularly helpful that I am getting perspective from two quilters, who have different quilting preferences and methods. Well worth the purchase and I am sure that it will be part of my library until I am old and gray.

I loved this book from the very beginning but was entirely convinced it was a winner when my married daughter sat down to look at it. She has never done quilting and was excited by the book and loved it! She felt it was easy to understand and something she would buy. We both loved the style of the quilts and jumpstarted our imaginations.

I love this book as it gives some great new ideas on using the old classic 'storm at sea' block. The color pictures provide lots of inspiration and the instructions are written so that quilters of all levels can understand them. A great addition to any quilters library.

I purchased this book when it first came out. I made a pillow top using the instructions in the book. It turned out beautifully. I am an intermediate quilter. Her ideas and instructions are wonderful. If you do not have this book in your quilt book collection, add it when ever you find it. Her second book, "Mariner's Compass Quilts: New Directions" is just as good and includes some paper piecing instructions and patterns. However, if at all possible, find a copy of the "An American Quilt Classic" book.

In this simple, lovely paperback the life & times of two quiet, introspective pioneers come alive. They left the land of their birth for Seattle in America, arriving in the 1919. There they thrived within their community & their church. Until that fateful day when Iwao was snatched away shortly after Pearl Harbor. The World War II correspondence of this Issei couple throughout the dark years of their separate internments is the heart of this biography. Yet the memorabilia & superb black & white photographs of the NorthWest region give a greater insight into these quiet, devoted Americans. Truly an inspiring study in forgiveness & endurance. ........................

This is the true story of a married couple who were sent to separate internment camps during World War II. It is a heart-wrenching, but heart-warming story, told mainly in his letters to her, as she was too depressed or too ill to write much of the time. All Americans should know the full details of this shameful time in our history. This book shows how a man can love his wife under any circumstance. Highly recommended!
