    Book Description

Jim Cullen was one of thousands of "kids" who fought the air war over Europe during World War II. Those youngsters either grew up or blew up in combat. Cullen did both when his plane was shot down over Germany. He spent the next twenty-one months as a prisoner of war.

Now, over fifty-five years later, he has artfully blended fact, fiction and photographs into a most fascinating and memorable account of those heroic times. A must read.

    Book Description

When President Kennedy issued his well-known challenge to reach the moon and return safely before the end of the 1960s, the immediate responsibility for undertaking the task fell to 54-year-old NASA director James E. Webb. Eight years later, when the Apollo 11 spacecraft splashed down safely in the Pacific and the screens in NASA's Mission Control at Houston flashed the words "Task Accomplished," it was Webb who deserved much of the credit. In Powering Apollo, W. Henry Lambright explores Webb's leadership role in NASA's spectacular success--success that is rare in ambitious government policies and programs.

A North Carolina native and Congressional staff member, Jim Webb had served in Congress, worked in the Truman administration, and risen to high office in the defense and energy industries by 1961 when Kennedy named him to head the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Examining Webb's role as both Washington insider and government program director, Lambright probes the skills and experience that equipped him to handle his enormous responsibilities. He also shows how Webb's performance reflected important changes in twentieth century public life, including the concentration of political power in Washington; expansion of the federal bureaucracy; the rise of big science; and visions of cooperation among government, industry, and higher education.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight on Space Age Management.......2006-01-01

Our nation was indeed fortunate to have a NASA Administrator of the skills and insights of James Webb. His apparent push for the Industry-University-Government axis has served the United States well to this very day! I equate his vision of the Industry-University-Government axis as the forerunner of what sociologists today refer as "The Tripple Helix." Let us hope that future NASA administrators might wield the influence in the Oval Office and the Halls of Congress for humans to Return to the Moon in the 21st Century. If the James Webb Telescope has the vision of its name sake, well ... fasten your seat belts!

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Administrative Biography of a NASA Legend.......2004-07-02

This is an excellent biography of James E. Webb (1906-1992), NASA administrator between 1961 and 1968, the critical period in which Project Apollo was underway. During his tenure NASA developed the modern techniques necessary to coordinate and direct the most unique and complex technological enterprise in human history, the sending of human beings to the Moon and bringing them safely back to the Earth.

Political scientist W. Henry Lambright focuses here on the biography of a stellar public administrator. He finds that Webb, a North Carolinian with a thick southern accent that charmed all and helped to hide a steel trap mind, was well-prepared for guiding NASA during this critical era because of his place as a Federal government insider well-versed in the bobs and weaves, ins and outs of New Deal Washington and the highest echelons of the Democratic Party.

Coming to Washington in 1932, Webb served as secretary to Representative Edward W. Pou of the 4th North Carolina District and Chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee until 1934. He then went to work in the law office of O. Max Gardner, attorney and former Governor of South Carolina, in Washington, D.C., between 1934 and 1936. He then moved to the private sector, eventually rising to vice president of the Sperry Gyroscope Company, before entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944. After World War II, Webb returned to Washington and served as Executive Assistant to Max Gardner, by then Under Secretary of the Treasury, before being named as Director of the Bureau of the Budget in the Executive Office of the President, a position he held until 1949. President Harry S Truman then asked Webb to serve as Under Secretary of State. When the Truman administration ended early in 1953, Webb left Washington for a position in the Kerr-McGee Oil Corp. in Oklahoma.

James Webb returned to Washington on February 14, 1961, when he accepted the position of administrator of NASA. Webb's long experience in Washington paid handsomely during his years at NASA, where he lobbied for federal support for the space program and dealt with competing interests on Capitol Hill and in the White House. His career changed fundamentally after May 25, 1961, when President John F. Kennedy announced that the United States would commit itself to landing an American on the Moon before the end of the decade. For seven years after Kennedy's 1961 lunar landing announcement, through October 1968, James Webb politicked, coaxed, cajoled, and maneuvered for NASA in Washington. The longtime Washington insider proved a master at bureaucratic politics. In the end, through a variety of methods Administrator Webb built a seamless web of political liaisons that brought continued support for and resources to accomplish the Apollo Moon landing on the schedule Kennedy had announced. He left NASA in October 1968, just as Apollo was nearing a successful completion.

All of this is detailed in Lambright's excellent book. Once reading it, everyone will understand the book's title, "Powering Apollo," which Webb did with brilliant political leadership.

Lambright deals extensively with the most difficult challenge faced by Webb, the Apollo 1 fire on January 27, 1967 that killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee. As shock gripped the nation during the days that followed, Webb told the media, "We've always known that something like this was going to happen sooner or later....who would have thought that the first tragedy would be on the ground?"

Webb took the brunt of public criticism for the accident, and went before various congressional committees and took a personal grilling every time. His answers were sometimes evasive and always defensive. The New York Times said that under Webb NASA stood for "Never a Straight Answer." While the ordeal was personally taxing, whether by happenstance or design Webb deflected much of the backlash over the fire from both NASA as an agency and from the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. While he was personally tarred with the disaster, the space agency's image and popular support were largely undamaged. Webb himself never recovered from the stigma of the fire, Lambright notes, and when he left NASA in October 1968, even as Apollo was nearing a successful completion, few mourned his departure.

In all, this is an outstanding administrative biography of Jim Webb, still by far NASA's most significant administrator, although some-Daniel S. Goldin and James M. Fletcher (when his two appointments are counted together)-have served longer. "Powering Apollo" is must reading for anyone seeking to understand the Apollo program.

    4 out of 5 stars A unique perspective.......2001-08-19

So Many books have been written about what it took technologically to put a man on the moon. What this book does is give the reader insight into what it took to get the resources to buy the technology. James Webb proved to be an expert when it came to serving many masters. The President(s), Key members of Congress and the NASA team. Would we have landed a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960's without Jim Webb? Probably Not.

4 out of 5 stars Biography of the NASA's Finest Administrator.......2001-03-01

A nice book about the second NASA administrator who able to guide NASA from the early days of the Mercury program to right up to the first journey to the moon (Apollo 8) when Webb was forced to leave as the Nixon Administration took over.

The book is divided into two parts. The first third of the book describes Webb's early years including his employment with the State Department, the Bureau of the Budget and Republic Supply, a division of Kerr-McGee. The remainder of the book focuses on Webb's involvement in the development of the NASA management system and the problems he overcame to get Apollo to the Moon.

In general, I found the book quite interesting. There are many descriptions of the personal battles he had to fight with contractors, the congress and his own top-level employees, how set up the NASA management system, his involvement with the academic world and in how upper management viewed various disasters and triumphs. The management system which he developed for the largest engineering and research effort mankind has ever undertaken, carried on well after he left NASA. For example, the Apollo 11 moon landing took place when it was suppose to even the there was a new Nixon appointed leader. This management system carried on well into the Space Shuttle and Space Station programs. I also found it refreshing that Jim Webb felt a sense of personal responsibility for the loss of the Apollo 1 crew. Compare that to the finger pointing associated with the Challenger explosion and the majority of today's politicians.

After finishing the book, I came away with the feeling that Jim Webb was truly believed in the dream that mankind should explore space and made every effort to make this dream a reality.

    G'day,
I was always a sceptic, laughing at people who took supplements until...
BANG! A heart attack at 45.
What Dr Joel Wallach's book has done for me is to explain, in layman's terms, the reasons for what happened in my case and the reasons for many degenerative diseases. His explanation as to why we need supplementation has also changed my attitude in this area. It is true that Dr Wallach's finding on mineral deficiency diseases challenge the paradigm of "orthodox" medicine thus its no wonder that people are sceptical.
The first part of the book, Dr Wallach's Biography, is very important as it allows us to peek into this scientist's life and see how his discovery was made. (Like many discoveries it was accidental!!). The second part of the book the functions of Minerals and the alternative approaches for dealing with degenerative diseases are worth their eight in gold!! This book is a must for anyone who values their family's HEALTH.

Makes some very wild and unsubstantiated claims... but what I did find interesting is how closely his [current] advice [in "Live Doctors Do Lie" tape] parallels that of Atkins, Sears and Peskin... all low-carb, hi-protein gurus.

I have never in my life read a book with so many half-truths and un-truths. I have rheumatiod arthritis and have been under the care of two very good doctors. The treatments that Dr. Wallach's claims the medical world won't let the general population in on are exactly what my doctors have tried on me. He claims that veterinarians have the cures for what ails us.They use them with success on the animals. He claims animals don't get arthritis. Dr. Wallach claims doctors know about them but won't use them, they don't want to lose the business! I shared this book with a friend that is a veterinarian, she said it is ridiculous. Shame on this man for slamming a group of professionals that in the most part are there to help hummanity.
    A shamful book.
I wonder how it ever got published.

Where can twentysomethings learn to cook? Basic Cooking, first published in Germany and now Americanized, is a good starting place. Relying on bold layouts to keep things visually spirited and a "hip" authorial voice that jollies readers along, the book imparts solid cooking information and core recipes in a direct, friendly way. "Think basic and have fun," the authors exhort; most readers, of whatever age, will.

Assuming kitchen innocence but informed taste, the book offers its readers data on shopping and pantry setup (a sidebar usefully dissects refrigerator space), basic techniques (the labels "strong" and "gentle" cooking are its helpful way of dividing the wet-cooking methods), and over 150 attractive recipes. Recipe chapters begin with basic info--on rice types, for example--and then present photo-illustrated formulas for the likes of spaghetti with clams, caesar salad, baked salmon, and chocolate pudding. The recipes, which include extensive prep information, cover not only simple dishes, as above, but more sophisticated ones such as Whole Fish Baked in Salt, Provincial Vegetable Ragout, and Crème Caramel. With small tutorials such as "Five 5-Minute Savory Sauces" among its trove of show-and-tell material, the book should attract its intended audience and others as well. --Arthur Boehm

4 out of 5 stars A Decent Intro to Cooking........2007-05-26

I checked out this book from a local library because I developed an interest in cooking and wanted to start learning it on my own. What I immediately liked about this book is that it doesn't assume readers know all the terminology about cooking, because it tries to appeal to twentysomethings who are just starting out on their own and learning to cook. In the first pages, the authors explain what they think are the essentials to keep in a kitchen, how to store foods properly, different cooking techniques for vegetables and meats, etc., etc. And whoever said it on here was right: it was very helpful that the book lays flat on the counter, making it easy to refer to while cooking without having to hold back the pages all the time. After perusing through the recipes and trying a few on my own, I copied down what interested me before returning this book back to the library.

One thing I noticed, though, is that the authors seem to have a preoccupation with lemons. They list them in practically every recipe (it's even on the cover, for crying out loud).

The book offers a variety of ethnic cooking (the curry chicken was great, I thought, for starting out) and in recipes that are simple. They also list what other foods go well with others in a meal. I didn't care for all of the recipes, but of course, that's just a matter of personal taste. I think other readers, though, will appreciate the authors' attempts to bring variety and different ethnic foods to the table.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something simple.......2005-12-26

I recently moved out into my own apartment, and I've been looking all over for a book like this. Finally a cookbook that's unpretentious, extremely simple, and has nice big pictures. I'm just as literate as the next cat at my university (actually, probably more so), but I really like to have pictures with recipes - it's the easiest way to tell whether or not I'm going to like something before cooking it. I respect that there are classic cookbooks which probably have better recipes, but since I never got basic kitchen 101, I'm not at that level yet, and this book is a great stepping stone. Hopefully, after a few years of cooking with this, I can actually understand the Joy of Cooking!

3 out of 5 stars Basic Cookbook and Not Basic Cooking.......2005-12-05

I mistakenly thought this book would teach me the basics of cooking, not really. Like every other cookbook I read through it without understanding the meaning of the technical cooking terms. Plus you gain little insight into the fundamentals of proper cooking technique.

The problem with this book is that if you can use Amazon then you don't need a basic cookbook. The internet is full of free recipes, most much better than the ones in this book. The writing is translated from German so its a little weird. At times it sounds like it was translated by a teenage girl. "Dont's at a barbeque, enemies attending!" Bizarre.

Anyway, I was pretty dissapointed with the content. But the photos and layout are very good.

        5 out of 5 stars Favortite cookbook.......2004-03-16

I love this cookbook. I have had it for 5 years, and it is still my favorite. The best thing about it is that it teaches you everything you need to know about stocking your kitchen with essentials, how to cook all different types of foods, and even how to cook for company. The recipes are simple, and taste delicious. I could never get tired of it. Most of the meat dishes are now my staples.

I am actually an accomplished cook, but I bought this book because I used to be a vegetarian, so I did not know how to cook meats. It makes everything simple, and doesn't use crazy ingredients, which makes it a staple for everyday cooking. Also, it tells you how long it takes for prep time and cooking each dish so you can judge if you have time to make it.

I highly recommend this book to beginners and anyone looking for easy fast recipes that will have everyone thinking you are the best hostess ever.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty and USEFUL.......2003-08-27

Often, a cookbook is pretty or it's a textbook. This one has taught me more in 30 minutes of perusal than many others have in days of reading dull recipes. It is large and lays flat for easy consultation during cooking. The prep times have been pretty accurate even for a cooking klutz like me and the recipes are simple enough to allow plenty of room for experimentation. This book has given me the confidence I lacked (and lost more of when looking through other books of "basic cooking"). Love it. Have sent copies to other kitchenphobes in my circle.

              4 out of 5 stars A guide worth tracking down...recently reprinted.......2001-02-20

The idea of fishing alaska for dollars a day stems from the concept of renting one of some 200 forest service cabins in the state. The cabin system is generally affiliated with hunting locations, but many are also amenable to fishing opportunity. So few guidebooks exist on alaska fishing logistics, that I was determined to obtain this one (the author had kindly supplied me with select pages to plan a trip last year). To my delight, the author (and publisher) have reprinted the most recent, 1995 edition. Since that writing, much of the information contained in the book is now available on the universal web-site for cabin reservation information. Even so, the book provides some additional guidance on where the fish are (and aren't), what to bring, and what to expect. The book is due for a revision, taking into account rehabilitation of some of the cabins, the current reservation (and lottery) systems, and, possibly, including the fish and wildlife service cabins on Kodiak and the Adak Islands. Still the book is more comprehensive than more selective books on cabins in south-central Alaska. I rate it at four stars, a definite "buy".

4 out of 5 stars Touching and sobering account of a POW's experience........1999-04-04

This book presents a rather objective view to a profoundly painful period in a service man's life. It is broad in scope. It covers a wide array of emotions. It starts as an adventure , hope barely alive. As it suffers through the senseless horror, death and pain of war and imprisonment it become gray and somber. The author wrote it over 50 years ago in an easy yet compelling style and tone. It is ejoyable and informative , an good addition to any library especially one dealing with WWII naval history in the Pacific Area.

5 out of 5 stars A quick read with not too much jargon. Very interesting........1998-07-15

An informative and educational work. The war can best be felt through the eyes of those who participated in it, from the time before the U.S. entered through the pre-pacific war days to Pearl Harbor and beyond. An interesting cast of characters on the ship (the pope) and in the POW camps. I was surprised at how badly the Dutch acted and, at times, how well the Japanese behaved. One of the best books I have read in a long time.
