The story was well told. Importantly the author stayed with the story-line through the book. For a veteran, with a brother and a brother-in-law who were C.O.'s, the author lucidly covered conditions during and after WWII about which I was unaware. I was "captured" within minutes and couldn't put the book down until the end of the story. The author is a good story-teller, at least the story about his personal experiences. Well worth not only the price, but the time invested.

We had a go at the White Chocolate Truffle and Raspberry tart.
We followed all the steps verbatim, and truth be told- it looked outstanding. Lucky for us it was ours alone to enjoy- or so we thought. Turns out we were lucky there was nobody else there to curse us for serving it to them.
It met its demise on the pavement by the dumpster outside our house. We thought we had seen the last of it, but when we awoke the next morning, it greeted us with open arms and a note reading "Thanks a lot a**hole we'd rather eat rats". We're pretty sure we weren't too discriminating. A complete disaster.
The crust was terrible- who thought this recipe up? The white chocolate truffle filling somehow managed to taste like salted lard (and we used unsalted butter as the recipe indicated).

A public apology should be in order. Nasty stuff, Dean & Deluca!

I found this in the library and was so impressed with the information I bought a copy for continued reference. It explained a LOT about why I react the way I do in certain situations. Using the knowledge, I have improved my relationship with my wife, children, and friends. It has even given me insight into relationships at work (esp male to male.)

I have recommended this book to many friends and clients, and it has been very helpful to them. In the process of ordering another copy, I just read a review that refers to it as "a waste of time" for men. I disagree! But then again, no book is a one-size fits all...

This book is a better fit for men who have been depressed in an atypical way and who need a different perspective to understand themselves and get better. (The current working model of depression reflects more culturally "feminine" traits.) This book suggests that when a man abuses alcohol or drugs, becomes aggressive after a loss, or intimidates others with his 'bad moods', it is easy to overlook the vulnerable emotions behind self-destructive behaviors and violent behaviors. It's just as easy to miss the underlying clinical depression. The core value of this book is to suggest that we look beneath the mask. Written more as a self-help book than a textbook, it is shorter on theory and research than I like. But it is geared to a lay audience and succeeds in this way. There are many case studies and practical suggestions that the author's have successfully used in clinical practice.

Simply put, this book has been needed for quite a while. But it may not fit everyone in the same way.

Overcome Male Depression: Become A Panty-Waist.......2003-06-01

This is overly simplistic, leftist, academic tripe with the following bottom line premise: men are miserable, depressed, violent creatures because our parents raised us up to be ... well, men.

Call me cynical, but I'm suspicious of authors who use a Preface to essentially disavow any resposibility or even legitimacy for the treacle they are about to set forth. I guess it is important to know though that the book is based on a lot of their personal experiences and that writing it was a marvelous bonding experience for them.

Having established their loophole and "sensitivity credentials" the authors proceed to parrot the feminist agenda. It soon occurs to the reader that, from the authors' perspective, the Charlton Heston's and John Wayne's of the world are inherently depressed beyond belief while the Woody Allen's are almost manic.

My bottom line: if you're a man this book is a waste of time.

Important Chapter in Asian American History.......2006-04-27

This important work recounts through oral histories the delivery of medical care in the internment camps during World War II. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, over 100,000 people of Japanese Ancestry (over two-thirds were American citizens) were forcibly removed from their homes and "evacuated" to internment camps in the western United States. Conditions were poor, including the state of medical care.

The actual medical care of the internees fell largely upon the physicians, nurses, dentists and other health care professionals who themselves were interned in the camps. Under harsh conditions with limited facilities and supplies, they did their best to aid those in need. This book describes the lives of these caregivers before, during, and after the war. This book is a unique historical resource; no other tells firsthand accounts of how medical care was provided in the internment camps. It is a vital reading for those interested in the history of Japanese Americans, especially during the internment years.

One more thing: this book can be purchased at the Japanese American National Museum bookstore website for a much lower price than that listed on Amazon.com.

This book was more an advertisement by the author for the Swiss advising company he works for than a comprehensive book on the subject. It is also out-of-date. It had some useful points but you would want to read it alongside other books on the subject for broader perspective.

New Direction in Managerial Accounting textbooks.......2006-02-22

Cunningham et al have added extensive coverage for the role accountants need to play in start-up companies. This is something quite new and exciting to find presented in a managerial accounting textbook. The older textbooks like Horngren were all focused on how you eliminate inefficiences found in the manufacturing process. So what do you do when much of that manufacturing is either contracted out or has moved to China?

Outside of Silicon Valley the most needed skill for accountants in new technology companies is in performing their role during the start-up period. The successful completion of this phase is assumed in the older textbooks and dealt with from chapter 10 onwards here. Horngren and others did not really prepare their students for this situation. Cunningham et al have stepped in and dealt with this emerging need in accounting education.

The authors should include more material on the nature of the accountants role in technology start-ups. Outside of Silicon Valley the accounting students are relying on people such as the authors to tell them what they might pick up from their working environment if they were working in the Valley. This certainly seems to be the case here in Israel. We have the high-tech companies, but accountants have yet to make the transition to this new way of thinking presented in this textbook.

But little is known about the actual innovation process. Is funding the only issue? Protecting the arts from the marketplace has up to now been the main item in any discussion of artistic creativity. This publication of Fitzgibbons carefully researched investigation provides a privileged insight which both fills out and refocuses the picture. She examines the operation of three performing arts companies from Ireland, a country whose reputation for creativity bears little relation to its small size and population, and finds that innovation in the arts requires uncommon dedication, persistence and-yes-sacrifice, qualities that have been blurred by the 'mythology' of what makes for artistic innovation.
