Guillaume de Syon has written a terrific (and much needed) cultural history of the rise of zeppelins and their place in broader German culture.

The book is divided into six, more or less equal chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 trace the Zeppelin's uncertain early rise a glorified dirigible to its widespread acceptance as a powerful symbol of Germany on the eve of WWII. The zeppelin's role in the First World War is the subject of Chapter Three. [I found the author's discussion of how both domestic and foreign observers exaggerated the airship's military contributions for different reasons to be particularly interesting.] Chapters 4 and 5 discuss the exonomic difficulties faced by the Zeppelin company during the inter-War period. The book's final chapter concerns the problematic efforts of Nazi officials to make the zeppelins fit in with their ideological visions before they ultimately decided to disband the Zeppelin program (in favor of airplanes) in the spring of 1940.

Despite being an academic title (from Johns Hopkins University Press), the book is eminently readable and highly recommended to those interested in airships and the history of aeronautics.

"UP SHIP" - ZEPPELIN.......2003-10-15

In the INTRODUCTION the author notes "... Germany in the first half of the twentieth century offers an especially valuable case study of the intersection of technology and culture." Readers often think of Zeppelin history solely in terms of the Hindenburg crash; but in Europe from 1908 to 1939, the Zeppelin was a powerful technological and cultural symbol that was manipulated during the Germany's Imperial, Weimar and Nazi eras for both political and business gain. The Zeppelin was a gigantic, magnificent machine and drew excited responses from all who witnessed it in flight.

The text gives a brief account of airship development focusing on Count Zeppelin's (a retired army officer) efforts to develop a rigid airship. Following the loss of Zeppelin's fourth airship, LZ 4, spontaneous public money donations provided funds for Count Zeppelin to continue his work. The approach of World War I finally drew military interest in the Zeppelin. The Zeppelin's military achievements were limited; but the allies hated it as a terror weapon thereby providing justification for the postwar dismantling of the Zeppelin Company. However, the tremendous technological development during the war indicated a bright future for the Zeppelin in luxury air travel and scientific exploration.

Count Zeppelin died in 1917 and Dr. Hugo Eckener became the postwar Zeppelin Company's leader. In the postwar period, the Zeppelin as a symbol of German technology and culture greatly increased. The author gives an excellent account of the Zeppelin Company working to survive and avoid dismantlement as required by the Versailles Treaty. The company first survived by furnishing a Zeppelin, ZR 3, to the United States as war reparations. Its delivery by a transatlantic flight in October 1924 was perceived as demonstrating that German technology, enterprise and workmanship lead to success. The author relates how the Weimar Republic capitalized on this perception. The author notes that in 1925 "...the issue of destroying the airship works dominated the Zeppelin company's concerns." Believing that a new airship would demonstrate the commercial feasibility of the transoceanic air travel, a public fund raising campaign for a new Zeppelin was initialed in August 1925. Less than half of the needed funds were raised. Government funds together with funds from Zeppelin subsidiaries supplied the balance of funds needed. The Versailles Treaty restrictions on airship building were lifted in 1926 and the new airship (LZ 127) was built. Christened Graf Zeppelin in July 1928 it became one of the most famous aircraft in history. The text narrates the career of the Graf Zeppelin during the declining years of the Weimar Republic including a 1929 round-the-world flight with only four stops and a 1931 scientific flight to the Arctic. Politics continued to be an ever-present companion in all activities.

Chapter 6 titled "Political Zeppelinism-Manipulating Airship Culture, 1933-1939" is most intriguing. The totalitarian Nazi regime had a problem dealing with the Zeppelin, a strong national symbol that predated them. Air Minister Hermann Goring hated them and Adolph Hitler didn't trust them. However, as the author notes "The political instrumentation of the Zeppelin had bound to occur for like all aspects of aviation, the Zeppelin fit in with the new regime's desire to demonstrate its interest in technological innovation." Hugo Eckener, once considered running against Hitler in the 1932 election, was losing his battle with the Nazi While the Nazi cared little for Eckener it was only logical that they follow his philosophy and try to turn the airship into a profitable venture. However, the Zeppelin as a symbol of German honor, culture and technology came to an abrupt end in 1937 with the destruction of the Hindenburg.

The Hindenburg's replacement, Graf Zeppelin II, made some propaganda flights, but unable to obtain helium from the United States, the Zeppelin era ended on 20 February 1940 when the Air Ministry ordered the destruction of the two airships, Graf Zeppelin and Graf Zeppelin II.

The author concludes the book noting, "Indeed, the Zeppelin offers an interesting case study of how society and technology play upon one another" adding "While Zeppelins served as nationalist icons from 1908 onward, under the Nazis their political use became blatant and conspicuous. The airship offered a seemingly perfect propaganda piece for the national Socialist leaders, appearing at Nazi rallies, whipping up nationalist enthusiasm before the arrival of Hitler."

This book is not your typical Zeppelin book that mostly dwells on the Hindenburg crash; rather it is a well-researched study of the interaction of technology and culture in a society. Finally, the "Essay on Sources and Methods" at the end of the book is very useful for the serious reader and merits close attention.

Impressive to onlookers, gigantic in scope, and obsolete almost as soon as it was invented, few things capture the zeitgeist of the previous fin-de-siecle as does the zeppelin. Guillaume De Syon, an obvious enthusiast of an earlier era of flight, does a superb job in exploring the social and cultural history of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's invention from its birth in the young nation of Germany to its death on the cusp of the Second World War.

Well-researched and properly critical, De Syon traces the cultural impact of the rigid airship through three German states: imperial, republic and fascist, examining the relationship between the zeppelin and the populace, many of whom would never get the chance to ride in one. In addition to the zeppelin's roles as transport, warship, exploration vessel and goodwill ambassador, De Syon illustrates its importance in German propaganda and kitsch.

This is a great historical book, which shows not only the "popular" airships of the pre-WW2 period, but also those not seen in most airship books. It shows a great amount german built blimps besides the Parseval, and has the necessary attention to detail while treating such prolific aeronautical period. It can be put as a very accurate and sufficiently thorough historical book, unlike "German Airships" by H. J. Nowarra, which is a great collection of pictures and drawings but is inaccurate many times.

Until something better is written, this is THE book on the subject. Those who have reviewed this book before me have said it all, but I would add that Lerner is a writer of exceptional talent. At times reading this book is liking reading poetry or great inspirational prose and it is often quite moving.

Scepticism and optimism combined.......2000-05-04

First a word about me: I'm one of those cancer patients who doctors either love or hate. I read up on everything, and I am openminded about the benefits and risks of both conventional and alternative cancer therapies. I question everything and want to understand where the limits of our current understanding lie. I want references!

If you are anything like me, you'll appreciate the exceptionally fine balance that Michael Lerner draws. He honestly investigates the extent to which various cancer therapies work, mostly by reviewing "serious" research which examines cancer treatment from different angles. In areas where scientific studies contradict each other, he doesn't draw unfounded conclusions. He manages to give specific guidelines for dealing with cancer without advocating any one therapy too much.

Of the many books I've read on cancer, this is the one I appreciate the most. The tone of the book is honest, warm and caring; personal without being sentimental. And best of all, it inspires hope.

The one caveat I have is that I'd love to see a revised edition with all the newest research reviewed! If you're considering a purchase, do a websearch for "Lerner" and "Choices in Healing", this should provide you with a reference to an online version of the whole book. Once you're convinced, buy the book!

Deep, excellent........1999-08-30

Now in paperback, this is the book to send your friends with cancer. Its wide-ranging, patiently and caringly written, scholarly but accessible, and chocked with interesting references and good insights. Michael Lerner has taken it upon himself to do a thorough 'work-up' on the best of that heterogeneous lot of hearsay cures and popular supplemental treatments that cancer patients will start hearing about from friends, relatives and distant acquaintaces practically as soon as they are diagnosed. Choices in Healing gives one a way to start sorting it out.

Lerner strives for, and I feel achieves, an excellent balance between optimism and skepticism as he covers (a) the different "cultures" of conventional treatment - aggressive, gentle, U.S., European, Japanese, (b) spiritual approaches, (c) nutritional approaches, (d) physical and energetic approaches, (e) non-conventional herbal and pharmacological approaches. Stanislaw Burzynski, Virginia Livingston, Joseph Gold and Emanuel Revici, are some of the famous off-range cure inventors that he dignifies with his patient research.

I also found his chapters on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the cancer journey especially strong. He takes the reader up to death's door. And beyond. The chapter on pain is a revelation.

Highly recommended for anyone.

An excellen, balanced and compassionate book.......1999-04-26

As a pediatric oncologist with a special interest in the use of complementary medicine in cancer, I've read many books on this topic; and I must say this is the best so far. Dr Lerner is objective, knowledgeable, and writes well. His passion for the field, and his compassion for cancer patients show through. I would recommend anyone who intends to explore the use complementary medicine in cancer to start off with this book.

This book is exactly how it is described on the cover...great ways to take refridgerated dough and make a bunch of stuff with it from breakfast, lunch, appetizers, dinner to desserts. Great ideas, easy and quick, many things to choose from. I always have some form of dough in a can in my fridge and this cookbook helps me get more creative besides just using them for bread on the side of the plate at dinnertime. Great deal, great price, great ideas!

If you are concerned about dietary needs (low carb, low fat) then you need to tweak these recipies to suit your needs. Just by the low fat or no fat refriderated dough for a start.

This book is a great book to have on hand if you are a busy, active cook who needs to whip up dinner for a family in a hurry. I agree that the recipes are not "low-fat" but if you eat a regular diet, making one of these recipes once in a while will not kill you. If you read the cover it does not promise you that this is some type of gourmet baking book. The cover explains exactly what you will find in side!

If you don't cook with a jar of this, a box of that, and a tube of bread, run away from this cookbook! There are no recipes for breads, rolls, pasteries-only concoctions which presume you buy semi-prepared bread-like products. I realize this is not presented as a healthy or low-fat cookbook, but all should know that none of the "recipes" are either healthy or low-fat (note: packaged bread products contain partially hydrogenated oils and other icky stuff). I received this book as a gift from someone who knows I enjoy baking, so I can only guess that the title was confusing to them-there is no "dough magic" here!

Great overview on whipmaking process, but NOT an instruction manual!!.......2006-10-20

I must say I did find this book fascinating and the information contained in it provided an overview of the entire process of whipmaking form skiving a core to to plaiting the overlay. However, If your looking for a step by step, ultra-specific instruction manual, taking you completely thru the process of making a whip from scratch, this book still is not quite it!!! Don't get me wrong, there is alot of great information, and this is certainly THE Published book to get that comes closest to an instruction manual, but I feel, if your an absolute beginner, you're still not quite going to be able to knock out a COMPLETE whip from scratch after reading this book. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I was looking for when I got this book.

For instance, whenever Mr. Edwards talks about anything to do with the "set"(the overlay plait) he is very specific. But he quickly glances over other parts of the whip that are equally as important(i.e. he never fully explains exactly how to correctly taper and shape cores or bellies for certain whips which is going to be devastating to the overall whip taper if you don't have it right). The section right in the beginning explaining the different types of Leather and Hides was also lacking. And I know he's an Australian, but he spends WAY to much time emphasizing Stockwhips and barely anytime on the most popular American whip, the Bullwhip(you will DEFINITELY NOT be able to make a proper bullwhip after reading this book).
If you really want an INSTRUCTION MANUAL guiding you specifically thru every single step in making a Bullwhip, then go to www.dukewhips.com and buy Rob Duke's Bullwhip Making Instruction Guide.
I really did enjoy Mr. Edwards book. As I said there are a number of extremely vital techniques explained that are invaluable to the whipmaking process. I just wish it would have pulled the entire whipmaking process together more coherently.

Great book, well written and very easy to follow. Ron makes things so easy to follow that even the really hard stuff makes sense right off the bat. If you can't make a good quality whip after reading and following this book, give it up you never will be able to.

The book gives easy-to-understand guidance on planting, raising, and cooking many biblical foods, and it explains how the foods relate to Jewish holidays. Appears Accurate but Detached.......2003-09-05

While reading this I never felt Ume Tsuda leave the page and come to life. The book seems to have accurately researched the original letters from which most of this biography is sourced but then it is written with a detached perspective. Ume Tsuda should have written her own biography or had a close friend write it during her lifetime because this is so dry and antiseptic. Perhaps that is what you must get when the sources have all passed away and are not available for questioning.
