Book Description
Albert Einstein has been named the most important man of the twentieth century. As we look to understand the true nature of the universe with technological tools that weren't even dreamed of in his lifetime, Einstein's formulae remain our best key for decoding it. Einstein 101 explores both his work and his life-public and private. It also features a fascinating plain-language exploration of his famous "thought experiments," which explain how this extraordinary thinker visualized complex concepts. Accessible to all adults interested in the man, his life, and his work.

Einstein's Genius Explained........2005-03-31
Einstein: A Relative History provides an easy overview of Einstein's life and work as well as understandable presentations of his theories. The font is very readable along with large margins, which don't make the pages intimidating. Also, a timeline runs along the side of the some of the pages, which helps to understand the growth of his work over the years. In the middle of the book, there about 20 pages of pictures taken throughout Einstein's lifetime, which adds a visual aspect to the life and work of Albert Einstein. The biography also includes quotes of Albert Einstein interspersed throughout the text, which helps to link his work back to himself. Along with quotes, excerpts of his work on quoted to provide a firsthand viewpoint into the genius mind of Albert Einstein. It is clear to see from the author's writing, the veneration he feels for Albert Einstein. If you are looking for short but thorough overview of Einstein's life and work, this is it.

Not what I expected.......2006-05-06
I anticipated a book that would capture the attention of elementary-age children who had been through traumtic situations-- this book did not accomplish that goal. Many of the concepts were good, however the book was not easy for my clients to follow. I was looking for a book that would also apply to children in homes of relatives not just in foster care. I was disappointed. A certified trauma consultant/licensed social worker.
Exactly what we've been looking for!.......2005-09-30
We have a family member's child in our care and this was exactly what we've been looking for. She can see that she is not alone and her feelings are real and okay. She reads this book a lot and talks about it with her therapist on a regular basis. We all recommend it for any child (or family) going through a forced separation from their parents, whether short or long term, or unknown length of time.
A Touching Story.......2005-06-21
This is a story of disappointment and reconciliation for a little girl placed in foster care and the dog who is unapproachable until she finds just the right place to touch him. It teaches the reader to grasp the perspective of a child who cannot live with her parents. The book touches at the heart of every person's emotions, big or small. It is a well-written book with exceptional illustrations that speak to all children. This book offers ways for the child to relate to the protagonist's emotions of anger, sadness, hope, and disappointment. It is equally appropriate for adults who work with children living without their parents. Alcoholism, shelter living, and feelings of displacement are handled with great aptitude. It is ideal for teaching school-age kids about all types of families, including non-traditional models.
Right on Target.......2004-03-09
Finding the Right Spot has a double meaning in this superb book of the same name. It is a story of disappointment and reconciliation for a little girl placed in foster care and the dog who is unapproachable until she finds just the right place to touch him. Geared towards ages 6 through 12, Finding the Right Spot by Janice Levy teaches the reader to grasp the perspective of a child who cannot live with her parents.
Whatever the reason for the child's placement in a home outside his or her own, this book offers ways for the child to relate to the protagonist's emotions of anger, sadness, hope, and disappointment. It is equally appropriate for adults who work with children living without their parents.
"She's not coming," the little girl says as she waits and waits for her alcoholic mother to arrive at her birthday party. The grave disappointment she experiences reinforces the reason she is not with her mother. In another section, her foster mother, Aunt Dane, allows her to pound the pizza dough until the house shakes. In the book, the little girl is allowed to show her anger and confusion.
Alcoholism, shelter living, and feelings of displacement are handled with great aptitude. The book touches at the heart of every person's emotions, big or small. Finding the Right Spot is a well-written book with exceptional illustrations that speak to all children. A helpful guide at the end, written by Jennifer Wilgocki, M.S. and Marcia Kahn Wright, Ph.D., breaks down the text into digestible parts for the adult reader. Finding the Right Spot is ideal for teaching school-age kids about all types of families, including non-traditional models.
I highly recommend this book for its approach to foster care living both for children and for the people who care for them.

Customer Reviews:
Great Desserts.......2006-11-04
I have recently had to cut diary products from my diet for health reasons. Being a dessert fanatic made this very difficult until I got this book. I have made several recipes including the traditional apple pie and brownies. Everyone who has tasted them thought they were outstanding. It is great that the recipies use all parave products such a margarine and soy milk, it allows us lactose intollerant people to enjoy desserts again!!!
Not a bad cookbook.......2006-07-16
I applaud Ms Schechter for writing this cookbook. The restaurant, My Most Favorite Dessert, is a hugely popular destination. MOst of the recipes are decent. I especially like the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies. I made them for a friend we went to for Shabbat. Like anything else, ther are some great recipes in here and some not-so-great recipes. For a truly great cookbook, try Marcy Goldman's Jewish Holiday Baking.
avidbaker.......2005-09-26
I also felt the need to chime in here. I LOVE this cookbook. Everything comes out perfect and delicious (except the chocolate ganache which was quite a mess). My guests actually recognized Doris' Blackout Cake and said it tasted exactly like the one at the restaurant. The double chocolate chip cookies are incredible. The entire "pie and tart" section is wonderful. And I think the basic vanilla and chocolate cakes are perfect and delicious. This is one of my favorite dessert cookbooks and my "go to" book whenever I need an impressive dessert.
completely reliable.......2004-10-19
I've never done this before, but had to pipe in to defend this book-- every recipe I've tried from it has come out delicious the first time; I'm truly shocked to see that they didn't work for other people, as I'm no baker. The double-chocolate cookies and the biscotti recipes are now standards in my house.
Should have read all the reviews all the way down first.......2004-09-09
Like others, I've been to the retail location and it's been great.
Like others, I didn't read the reviews all the way to the bottom.
Like others, I've tried several recipes, several times.
Like others, nothing came out right.
Very disappointed.
I've tried desserts from Levana's Kitchen, and everything came out great, the first time!

Visit the library first.......2007-02-28
I checked this out from our library before purchasing, and I'm glad I did. There was not a single pattern I am interested in making. The hats--my main interest--look like they were designed by someone who learned to knit 6 months ago. There are so many better felting books and patterns out there--keep searching.
Fablous Felted Knits.......2006-11-10
This book has some interesting patterns in it. However, I find the construction somewhat off putting.
a Christmas gift.......2006-01-12
I recieved this book as a christmas gift. I do not think that I would have bought it for myself, but it made a good gift.
I have not tried any of the projects yet, but that is mainly because they do not appeal to me or, for the ones that do appeal to me, I have to go out and find the supplies for them. The yarn bowl looks very nice. The pictures of the projects are great and in good color, but the techniques glossary is lacking these pictures or even diagrams and could leave you in the dark, especially if you do not sew or embroider.
It was nice to learn that felted knitting could be sewn and cut, but I want to knit and felt a finished product, not knit fabric, felt it, cut it out, and sew it together.
Most of the projects retain their stitch definition, which is not a look that I expected. The machine felting instructions leave me uneasy, but the hand felting instructions were wonderful and easy to follow. The drying and finishing instructions are also clear.
Glad I borrowed from library instead of buying..........2005-11-25
I borrowed this book through my local library, and I am so glad I did so before purchasing it. If you cannot sew, you will not be able to do several of the designs. The pattern for the handbag pictured on the cover requires sewing skills; additionally, it requires a zipper, and the size and type of zipper necessary is not included in the materials list. Also, the publishers have chosen not to list suppliers in the back of the book, and ask the reader to refer to their website instead. Well, I logged on to Lark's website, and could not find a list of suppliers for this book. Thanksfully, a google of online yarn suppliers will help you locate some decent internet sources that sell some of the more specialty yarns used in this book. I will continue my search for a book on felted knits, and pass on purchasing this one.
Great book!.......2005-11-17
I bought this book for the vest pattern, but I've ended up knitting a bag instead. The instructions are clear for the knitting, and there are several different methods of felting detailed in the introductory chapter. A previous review dissed this book because it has embroidery and sewing in some of the patterns. That person labeled it not "easy." I don't know what information that person had, but the title says nothing about "easy," and in fact, I like the challenge associated with the designs. There are a range of patterns, from simple to challenging. Not everything has to be "easy" to be fun or worthwhile to do. And, you can modify patterns to suit yourself. This book gives a lot of information about felting so you know why and how it works and can then use the technique in whatever way you want (including combining it with embroidery and sewing). I highly recommend it.

Many people love the idea of a house full of fresh-cut flowers, but sadly, most have no idea how to select, care for, and arrange flowers, much less grow them. Flowers A to Z is a superb guide for anyone who enjoys flowers and wants to celebrate them in the home or garden. Author Cecelia Heffernan, a floral designer by trade, provides a wealth of information on how to cut, purchase, arrange, care for, and grow all types of flowers.
The book is divided into sections covering everything leading up to a beautiful flower arrangement sitting on your dining room table. It begins with a chapter on hardware, which details all the basic tools--from floral shears to floral wire and tape--that you'll need for cutting and arranging flowers, as well as advice on choosing and caring for vases and other containers. The "Handling Flowers" chapter explains the proper way to cut, condition, and care for flowers to ensure the most attractive and long-lasting arrangements. The author sprinkles valuable tidbits of advice throughout the book. She suggests, for instance, that it is better to use branches or thick foliage as arranging aids instead of floral foam, chicken wire, or other artificial aids, as those can shorten the vase life of flowers significantly. This section concludes with a concise and informative guide to growing flowers in your home garden.
The final section, which makes up the bulk of the book, is an alphabetically arranged guide to flowers from agapanthus to zinnia. Each flower is depicted in a gorgeous full-page photograph, while smaller images show the flowers in different stages of development, illustrating the difference between fresh and older flowers. The informative text is written in a handy reference style, detailing the specifics of each flower: its scientific name, available colors, scent, how long the blooms will last after being cut, relative cost, and other useful information.
The gorgeous photographs, accessible text, and handy cross-referencing will surely inspire many readers to fill their homes and gardens with blossoms. --Robin Donovan

Colonial Williamsburg's renowned gardens have always played a major role in the life of the town. Their beauty and bounty inspired From a Colonial Garden. The author harvests a wealth of clearly written and illustrated entertaining and decorating how-to's and recipes from these famous gardens. From a Colonial Garden, with its myriad of ideas, deserves a special place on the bookshelf of any host, hostess, or gardener
Customer Reviews:
Rates a place on the bookshelf.......2004-03-27
Colonial Williamsburg... sets a high standard for illustrated books on gardens, the Colonial kitchen, and the decorative arts in the occasional books it publishes.
The latest from CW's presses is Susan Hight Rountree's "From a Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" ($24.95). The first section introduces the reader to the formal but colorful gardens visitors can admire in the restored area -- but these gardens also serve a practical purpose as succeeding sections attest...
The book is strong on weddings, offering a winter reception at the Williamsburg Inn or a summer ceremony at a James River plantation. Ms. Rountree... also uses garden materials to make gifts, wreaths, table decorations, and other items throughout the year. The section on Christmas is especially useful, and readers will want to remember to consult the book in early November, before the holidays, for fresh ideas.
This not primarily a cookbook, but Ms. Rountree includes recipes for seasonal dishes to round out her sections... As with all CW publications, this new book upholds the benchmarks of taste and style readers have learned to expect, and will rate a place on the bookshelf of gardener, cook, and home decorator.

Entertaining with a 'Colonial' Flair.......2004-03-15
The newest entertaining and decorating book from Colonial Williamsburg combines touches of elegance with moments of fun and fantasy.
The 212-page book, "From A Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" is divided into chapters that take you through the seasons and many special occasions such as weddings, bridal showers and rehearsal dinners. There are 287 color photos and 24 illustrations to guide you every step of the way.
Best of all, most of the projects are simple to create... For example, veggies such as colorful peppers are used to create a zesty-looking centerpiece on the nail-studded wooden cone that's typically covered with apples and sprigs of boxwood...
One of her easiest and sunniest table arrangements is perfect for a summer picnic or cookout. A partially hollowed-out watermelon serves as a container for a bouquet of zinnias, rudbeckia, coreopsis, apple mint and rosemary...
Rountree says the chapters on ideas from the spring garden are her favorite sections because they encourage you to use so many fresh flowers. "I'd like to see more people doing that," she says. "Fresh flowers are so many places these days--in the markets or you can grow your own."
A chapter on garnishes from the spring garden also features Rountree's garden pet--the Cheshire Cheese Hedgehog... English folklore says it's a sign of good luck when you find a hedgehog in your garden. The book features an easy cheese-based recipe for making the hedgehog. "I've had such fun with him, he'll be in every book," she says.
--Kathy Van Mullekom, Daily Press

Welcome to Spring.......2004-03-04
How charmingly and seamlessly does Susan Hight Rountree translate 18th-century entertaining style into the 21st century! This delightful addition to her past best-sellers will be enjoyed by not only professional designers but talent-challenged amateurs like myself who need guidance as we try to duplicate the classic Williamsburg look. The "how-to" directions are clear and the beautiful illustrations are lavish, promising success with all the enticing projects--family celebrations, garden parties, weddings, gifts and holiday decorations. A wonderful complement to every decorating library!

Handmade Gifts from a Country Garden is a classic example of what a crafts book should be. The text is charming without being cloying, the photography is exquisite, the crafts are lovely and unique, the directions are clear and simple, and the various appendixes and indexes are truly helpful. Moreover, Laura C. Martin has a pleasant and encouraging voice, like a cross between a sincere homeroom mother and Martha Stewart.
The 60 projects are arranged seasonally, and time, cost, materials, difficulty, and shelf life are given for each one. The projects run the gamut of complexity, from small pots of herbs (rated one pair of scissors--the easiest) to a lacy bridal-flower album (rated four pairs of scissors). It's not necessary to actually grow the ingredients--all can be purchased. Several pages at the beginning of the book detail what is needed to start out, and a section at the back gives relevant information for growing the various plants used. Handmade Gifts from a Country Garden would be a marvelous gift for anyone who has a bountiful garden or simply loves plants and crafts.

There are ideas for pressed flower pictures, natural dyed linen, clever Christmas ornaments and violet flower jelly. This book is a favorite of mine since the ideas are new and unusual. I recommend this book.

"Must reading for all women advised to have a hysterectomy and all women who have had one...[and] all physicians performing them."--R. Don Gambrell, Jr., M.D., Department of Physiology and Endocrinology, Medical College of Georgia
Customer Reviews:
A good reference book.......2002-01-23
I must say that I do agree with "a reader from California's" review in that some of what Dr. Cutler had to say scared me because I bought the book right after my surgery and everything was already taken out. I couldn't go back and change that. As I began reading the book I became anxious about what might happen to me now that I have had this surgery, but as I read, I realized what she was doing with this book. So many women have had hysterectomies in the United States when there might have been better alternatives. Dr. Cutler is trying to make women understand that it is a very serious thing that you do to your body when you have this operation. She addresses HRT therapy and diet, exercise and other areas that can help if a hysterectomy is needed. This is really a very comprehensive and informative book and I intend to keep if as a reference book for the future.
Required -If Slightly Outdated - Pre-Op Reading.......2002-01-19
This book should be handed out by OB/Gyn's to all their patients considering hysterectomy. It explains in detail what all the fuss is about, and doesn't pull any punches when relaying to the reader exactly what to expect from the procedure, before during and after. Cutler's advice on self-care is invaluable, and this book has become standard reading for women considering the procedure.
However, I found much of the information Cutler provides related to making a decision about hysterectomy to be outdated and irrelevant. I was somewhat taken aback by Cutler's anti-hysterectomy rhetoric. And I had to laugh at her bemoaning the way the procedure is over-performed - it took me 10 years to find a doctor who would even discuss it with me, regardless of my level of pain and desire to remain child-free! I think that when she wrote the book in the 1980's the attitudes about hysterectomizing women were considerably different than they are today. And a woman has more surgical choices than she used to, giving her more incentive than ever to partner with her physiscian rather than fight him.
Perhaps it's time for Cutler to revisit the issue and revise the book that set the standard.
This Book Title is Misleading!!!.......2001-02-16
I bought this book PREVENTING, PREPARING FOR AND MAXIMIZING HEALTH AFTER HYSTERECTOMY seven days before my scheduled hysterectomy. I already knew my hysterectomy and ovaries/fallopian tube removal were necessary. In purchasing this book, I was looking for some positive ways to deal with emotions before the operation; additionally, I was looking for what to expect immediately after surgery and ways to reduce post-surgery trauma. I also was looking for concrete ways to help myself recover from this surgery. Unfortunately, what I found in this book was FEAR---yes, this book's contents led me to doubt my physician and myself. I felt the author was very biased against hysterectomy. I would not have purchased this book if I had known the author was basically anti-hysterectomy. I found the book extremely unsettling and do not recommend it to any one.
Daunting For those that don't have a choice........1999-06-21
I am 26 years old and HAD to have a hysterectomy to basically save my life. A lot in the book scared me, I felt like I was fated to shrivel up into an old woman, even though I'm still young. The nutritional advice was valuable, as was the section on what to expect from sex after the surgery.
Gynocologist Hand out.......1999-05-30
This book should be the first thing your gynocologist gives you on your fisrt visit! After purchasing a copy 3 days prior to my own hysterectomy, I learned more than I had previously learned in 25 years of reading whatever I could find about my own painful, excessivly heavy flowing menstral cycles.
I followed the advice given and both doctors and nurses couldn't get over how quickly I recovered from this major surgery. In the 9 years since, I have recommended this book, lent my own copy (and have had to forcibly retrieve it!!!) to friends and workmates -- all who went out and purchased their own copy after returning mine.
Upon showing this book to my surgeon, he said it looked terrific and could he borrow it to read, at which point I reminded him that with his fees he could purchase his own, and hand them out to every patient at their first PAP smear and STILL be ahead financially. He laughed and sent his receptionist out to the book store.
Easy to understand and clearly written, this is the book every woman should use to make decisions about her reproductive organs. Pain is not inevitable and neither is hysterectomy.
My only complaint is the title, which might discourage someone from getting this book, if hysterectomy is not a choice for them. Other than that --- this is a 5 star winner!

Book Description
Any person who leaves
the country to go to another
and later returns
will be put to death.
This was the law in Japan in the early 1800s. When fourteen-year-old Manjiro, working on a fishing boat to help support his family, was shipwrecked three hundred miles away from his homeland, he was heartbroken to think that he would never again be able to go home. So when an American whaling boat rescued him, Manjiro decided to do what no other Japanese person had ever done: He went to America, where he received an education and took part in events that eventually made him a hero in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Little-known History.......2007-09-21
This book should be read by every American. It is a tremendous story of hard work and commitment as well as the right person being in the right place at the right time. Interesting and full of adventure, it's a TRUE story that illumines America's history and helps the reader understand the seeds of the global economy we have today. Don't miss this story--you won't find it in many history books or taught in today's classrooms. Educate yourself on true American history while enjoying this intriguing book by Rhoda Blumberg, an engaging author.
Fascinating...even for young children!.......2007-06-10
My girls, 6 and 8, couldn't wait to continue reading this book each day. It is so much more than a biography and is very readable. Besides an indepth look at the life and times of Manjiro, AKA John Mung, it is a wealth of information about Japan, whaling, and culture (and cultural change) without a textbook feel. I agree that it should be made into a movie (if it hasn't and I just don't know about it). This book is infused with many black and white photographs, paintings, prints, and drawings -- including sketches by John Mung. If using this in a classroom or homeschool environment, this is a great jumping-off point toward such varied subjects as Moby Dick and whaling, samurai, Commodore Perry, ships, Japanese history and culture, Hawaii, and even the California Gold Rush. This was riveting and gives the reader (even young ones!) a deeper understanding of Japan and the times surrounding Manjiro/John Mung's life. Pair this up with How to Be a Samurai Warrior (How to Be); You Wouldn't Want to Sail on a 19th Century Whaling Ship!: Grisly Tasks You'd Rather Not Do (You Wouldn't Want to...);Step Into... Ancient Japan (The Step Into Series);Exploration into Japan (Exploration Into); or Commodore Perry in the Land of the Shogun
Shipwrecked (Book Reveiw).......2005-10-31
Shipwrecked (Book Review)
A boy's manhood is at stake. Manjiro gets marooned on an island by a deadly storm. He is saved but by completely different people, Knowing he can never return to his home. He travels to America and learns English. Then one day Manjiro decides to go back and is thrown in prison. Later he gets promoted to samurai and lives happily. Shipwrecked is a fun to read nonfictional book. I would recommend this book for people who like reading stories about the sea and Japan.
Manjiro was always independent and had to be or his family would face the consequences. He started being even more independent when he looked out for his friends on the island by looking for food and scanning the terrain. Manjiro also decided by himself what to do on his own was when he decided to go to school and learn even though he was sixteen. He was the first one to ever think about going back to Japan even when he knew the consequences. So he went to get gold in California To raise money to go back.
Manjiro was unique in many ways. He thought differently than anybody else. He somehow beat the odds when he came back to Japan when he didn't get executed by his government. In that time Japan was an isolated country that killed anyone who entered the country. If you left you would never be able to come back, but in Manjiro's case he was able to. Instead he got promoted to samurai. Manjiro beat the odds in education also. He learned English in a matter of months when he never even went to school before in his own country! If you don't think that's unique you're crazy! He also took care of older people when he was only a young boy. When he took care of his family and took care of his older friends on the island 300 miles away from the Japanese shore are two examples.
Manjiro persevered all throughout his life. Especially through school and his very own survival. The ship that rescued them off the island wouldn't have found them without Manjiro's perseverance because when the ship was turning away he kept waving until he got the ship's attention. That's one of the ways he saved his life. When people weren't giving him enough pay for his work he didn't give up on his family. Instead he ventured off to find a new one and worked harder. Last but not least he persevered all the way through school. Everybody started recognizing his intelligence on the first day of school. Even Manjiro was faced with all those trials when he came back he never quit and so he was the first person to be promoted from peasant to samurai.
The nonfictional book, Shipwrecked, is really fun to read. People who enjoy reading books about Japan and the open sea would surely love reading this book. Manjiro was an independent person from a very young age. He was very unique in many ways. His best trait was perseverance. Manjiro never did deserve all the plight he faced. If I was Manjiro to be honest I would have never gotten off the island and make it through all the events that happened in his life.

One of the Greatest Adventure Stores.......2005-01-26
This is one of the greatest true adventure stories of all time. Hollywood should consider making this into a movie. I expecially like how Manjiro tries so many different things and seems to succeed at them all, including getting along with those around him.

Shipwrecked-More of a Text book than a Page Turner.......2004-02-09
This is more of a history lesson than a novel for kids. I thought that the book would be about a Japanese boy and his adventures, but there were too many names of boats, captains, and dates to make it interesting to read. You felt like it was a book they assign you in school for a test.
