The popularity of Michael Shaara's wonderful Civil War novel The Killer Angels left many readers hungry for more information about its real-life protagonist, Joshua Chamberlain, who bravely led the 20th Maine in holding the Union's extreme left flank at Little Round Top on the second day of Gettysburg. This dual biography introduces a new figure, nearly as compelling: William Oates, the man who commanded the Alabama troops opposing Chamberlain's bluecoats. Their parallel lives, captured on these pages, reveal the country's 19th-century sectionalism and allow Perry to write a chronicle of the Civil War and its aftermath through the prism of two engaging personalities.

Chamberlain's story is fairly well known. He was a Bowdoin College professor who left his post to serve in the army, fought well, and went on to a successful postwar political career as the governor of Maine. Oates, like Chamberlain, was the son of a farmer who got caught up in his nation's defining conflict, and then helped it inch along to recovery years later as a pragmatic governor and member of Congress. Perry refuses to canonize either--Chamberlain was an overbearing husband and Oates stuffed ballot boxes--yet his treatment of these two admirable but flawed men provides a refreshing new way to read about the Civil War. --John J. Miller

Book Description

At the center of this absorbing dual biography lies the legendary conflict at Little Round Top--"the single most important struggle" of the Civil War. Little Round Top decided the Battle of Gettysburg, opened the door to Northern victory, and brought together the disparate lives of two important Americans: Joshua Chamberlain, an academic from Maine who proved to be a brilliant military strategist, and William Oates, an Alabama maverick who fought heroically throughout the war. Both were self-educated men whose military success propelled them to the governorship of their respective states. By drawing on a vast mine of documents, Mark Perry brings these men vividly to life, and affords a fascinating look at nearly seventy years of American history. As a compelling portrait of two fabled men and an evocative account of the most crucial period in our nation's past, "Conceived in Liberty shows how history should be written" (Joseph Persico, author of My Enemy, My Brother).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Dual Bio of Little Round Top Commanders.......2006-03-27

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and William Oates clashed on the extreme flank of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. The Author traces the development of these young men turned military leaders and their post-Civil War lives in an excellent portrait of perhaps prototypical Southern and Northern patriots and the mindsets they brought to battle.

Neither man was trained for the military before the war, though Chamberlain was attracted to the army life. Trained for the ministry, Chamberlain became a leading professor at Bowdoin College in Maine. Oates was a neer-do-well, spending much of his late adolescence moving one step ahead of the law for a crime he committed in Alabama. Oates was able to clear himself and get home and remarkably bootstrap himself to the position of educated man, school teacher and lawyer on the rise.

When the War broke out, both Chamberlain and Oates were enthusiastic champions of their regions. Oates was able to act on his military desires from the outset, while Chamberlain had to sneak into the army by pretending to take a sabbatical from a college reluctant to lose a star professor to the cause.

Both serious students of war and engaged commanders, Oates and Chamberlain met on what may be the penultimate part of perhaps the War's most significant battle. Upon fierce engagement with barely 600 total men hung the fait of armies numbering almost 200,000 and a nation of millions.

This book gives an excellent telling of the battle at Little Round Top. The fighting will of course be familiar to the Civil War student. What also fascinates is the well drawn in-depth dual portraits of two men who embodied the mind of warriors for their respective causes.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful dual-biography of two men who made history!.......2005-02-02

Even though Joshua Chamberlain and William Oates came from totally different backgrounds, they seem to have become more and more similar as their lives progressed. On July 2, 1863, they faced one another in one of the most crucial battles in American history. Both earned reputations as brave officers in combat during the Civil War, and both became involved with politics following the war's end. I've been a Civil War buff nearly all my life, but at first I didn't expect to enjoy another dual-biography (they usually try to cram too much info in one volume). I was pleasantly surprised by this well-written and well-researched book which should be required reading for any Civil War buff. It doesn't go overboard praising Joshua Chamberlain's war record as other biographies have done, and William Oates, one of the most overlooked Confederate officers, finally got the attention he deserved. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Parallel.......2002-07-30

Very well researched..unique because it looks at two very different (and similiar) generals. Also contains a pretty good overview of significant battles of the war.

5 out of 5 stars A Prime Example of What the Civil War Won for All of Us.......2001-12-29

The Civil War was, in some ways, our own clash of cultures that ended up with us having a stronger, and more philisophically harmonic country than we had then. After the war we no longer were "Those United States" but "These United States".

While it took longer (and still has not taken root) for some Southern areas to accept that they have changed because of the war, this book outlines in a fascinating fashion why the American Dream was won in 1865.

Joshua Chamberlain and William Oates are both opposing personalities. Chamberlain was a professor, Oates a laborer. Chamberlain was a respected fellow before the war. Oates was much less.. even going into hiding at one point from the law.

What they had in common was a belief that they had gone as far as they could in their lives before the war. Chamberlain was forever going to be a professor. Oates forever a laborer.

Both faced each other in Gettysburg. While Chamberlain was the hero of Little Top in that battle, Oates eventually had a longer and more productive politcal life than Chamberlain.

Neither of these men won their positions by birth, wealth, or by the inner workings of a political machine. They won their positions by hard work, and the admiration of their men in battle and the people they fought for.

While it may have been possible prior to the Civil War for these men to have done so (Abraham Lincoln is a prime example) the fact is that the Southern philosophy was beaten in 1865, and the Northern philosophy of hard work, and position by trust and admiration rather than birth, and wealth won out and both sides reaped benefits and still are from that day.

4 out of 5 stars The Importance of Philosophy.......2001-08-14

In reviewing Golay's "To Gettysburg and Beyond," I bemoaned the artificial nature of comparative biographies. Ultimately, I argued that the disreputable life of the rebellious Edward Porter Alexander was not worthy to be compared with that of the faithful Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. I still stand by those claims.

Once again, a comparative study has been published featuring Chamberlain and a Confederate adversary. This book, however, is much more worthy of an investment of your time and attention for at least two important reasons.

First, unlike Golay, Mr. Perry has selected a worthy individual to compare with Chamberlain. Unlike many of his Southern compatriots, Oates was not a former high ranking official of the US federal government (e.g.: John Breckinridge or Jefferson Davis), nor was he a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point or a former US Army officer (e.g.: Davis, Lee, Longstreet, Jackson, Bragg, Alexander, Ewell, A.P. Hill, Garnett, Pickett, Armistead, et al.). Thus, Oates did not compound his acts of sedition with the violation of sacred oathes.

Second, Mr. Perry's text is not so much a comparative biography as it is a comparison of the philosophies and circumstances that led these two, brave men to heroically oppose one another on Little Round Top.

Following St Origin, the Church has long argued: "Lex orandi; Lex credendi." Mr. Perry makes clear that the opposite is also true: beliefs can lead to actions. Right beliefs lead to great, heroic actions (a la Chamberlain), and flawed philosophies lead to tragically flawed actions (a la Oates).

Mr. Perry's real contribution is not so much that he exegetes the lives of two brave men for us to emulate. His real contribution is that he demonstrates the power and value of our beliefs.

        Book Description

This is the first full-length biography of F_lix d`Herelle (1873-1949), a brilliant, self-taught scientist who became a seminal figure in the history of molecular biology and the first to demonstrate the use of bacteria for biological control of insect pests. A controversial and complex figure, d`Herelle remained an outsider to the scientific community despite the importance and scope of his work.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the Nature of Scientific Inquiry.......1999-12-01

This textbook is a combination book, partly the biography of an exceptional individual and partly a history of scientific discovery. The author, William Summers, is eminently qualified to write such a text, being a physician, scientist, and historian at Yale University.

D'Herelle is a renowned Canadian Scientist about whom I was totally ignorant. Born in Montreal, he traveled and lived in numerous areas around the world, although France became his eventual home. He never gave up his Canadian citizenship, however. D'Herelle was born to a wealthy family in Montreal, and after high school he traveled extensively, thanks to a gift from his mother. He never found time to return to formal schooling, but he learned enormous amounts in his chosen field, microbiology. His seminal scientific discovery was the description of bacteriophages, and their possible application in human infectious diseases. For this he received numerous awards, and at one time was a research professor at Yale University despite his own lack of formal education. Dr. Summers clearly delineates the process of scientific discovery, and the subsequent controversies over the nature of this new discovery (was it really a living organism or an enzyme?), and the determination of scientific priority. There is a fair amount of technical description, but Dr. Summers is a clear and logical writer who is able to guide the reader through the scientific process.

This book is an incredible work of scholarship, with extensive use of primary source documents. However, because the main thrust of this book is one of scientific discovery, we get very little analysis of d'Herelle's personality. I would have been interested in some speculation on how his lack of formal education might have influenced his often-stormy relationships with other scientists. Also, why was such a distinguished scientist so poorly treated at the Pasteur Institute, his spiritual home? There would be much to learn from a biography of this highly complex individual. Meanwhile, this is an excellent book that helps us understand the nature of scientific enquiry while saluting an outstanding scientist, who just happens to be Canadian.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review of d'Herelle's life and influence........1998-11-02

This book reviews the life of Felix d'Herelle, the man responsible for the co-discovery, naming, and popularization of bacteriophages, the viruses that infect bacteria. From bacteriophages came molecular genetics, and from molecular genetics came biotechnology as well as much of modern biology. Bacteriophages, in the guise of the bacteriophage therapy of bacterial diseases, may even change your life, serving as the next generation of truly effective antibacterial antimicrobials. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and benefited greatly from the insight provided into d'Herelle's life and influence on bacteriophagy. Without question, any individual interested in bacteriophage therapy, or just plain bacteriophages as more than just tools at the heart of molecular biology, will want to read this book.

Apparently I should have read Your Money or Your Life instead. I was annoyed by the tenth reference in the the first 15 pages. I know it's a bit of an exaggeration but seriously it became ridiculous. In addition, I felt left short by her sampling of families that had "downshifted" She wrote that she was confident that there were families living off the grid ,involved in green building, etc. but she wasn't able to find them. What? She lives in Oregon, how far does one have to look? Lastly, despite all the resources (which were more halpful than the cumulative info in the book)at the end of each chapter the book was underdeveloped and a bit superficial.

3 out of 5 stars You might want to read Your Money or Your Life instead..........2006-12-27

after all, it seems to be quoted multiple times in almost every chapter in this book. No wonder the co-author of YMOYL wrote the introduction! Honestly, this is a solid introduction to simplicity; unfortunately, it is hindered by too many references and quotes from Your Money or Your Life. There must be a better way to get across a point other than simply referencing another book (over and over and over). Amazon states that this book cites 72 other books within its pages -- I believe it.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, Helpful Information.......2005-07-29

In addition to purchasing several more philosophical texts on child-rearing, I bought this book hoping to get some basic ideas to promote simplicity in our family's life. This is a quick-read full of excellent ideas to pare down the influence of consumerism for our families. I plan to utilize a lot of the ideas in the book and to contact several of the resources listed. I give this 4 stars because it is VERY basic, but excellently written.

5 out of 5 stars Much needed breath of fresh air.......2004-12-23

Thanks, Marie. What a wonderful book and gentle reminder of the most important things in life -- too many children are over consumers by the time they've even hit double digits. Your book is a welcome voice with helpful information for those of us interested in turning the tide against all of the consumer hype and the noise.

2 out of 5 stars dull and unhelpful.......2004-11-25

I have a hard time believing that this author has children or has ever expereienced the company of children. Many of these tips are unrealistic, not just for the parent of older, self-entertaining children, but even more so for those with smaller children. It is unhelpful and frustrating to read, and I don't recommend buying it.

I will say that this book is great. I 'stumbled' on "Make-A-Mix Cookery" several years ago when a co-worker was showing it to another co-worker. Being a person who LIKES TO EAT and cook because restaurants rarely satisfied me quality- or quantity-wise, I had to check it out. I bought it and a few days later bought "More Make-A-Mix Cookery" after trying a few of the mixes and recipes; none of which disappointed me. My top favorites from "More........" are the "Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix". the best, and the "Snack Cake Mix". These and the recipes: Double Choclate, Oatmeal Spice, Carrot, Banana Walnut, and Applesauce snack cakes are lick the lips, um-um good. I always hated to eat the last piece of any of them. Buy the book!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos but not informative.......2000-01-21

This oversized book has beautiful photos of dogs but the facts are general, not specific. It's mostly a large picture book, very few words at all. Not at all helpful for deciding which breed to get. Only good as a children's picture book of dogs.

1 out of 5 stars Not an Artist.......2006-06-22

Had I not obtained a copy of this book for free, I never would have come to own a copy. I was going to toss it in the trash when we moved, but my children begged me to keep it for comic relief. I am a trained working artist and in my opinion, Ms. Dewberry needs some serious lessons in perspective, depth of field, tonal values, and drawing before she undertakes a book about mural painting. Even my kids could pick out numerous blunders. The cover shows a mural on an exquisite floating staircase in a bazillion dollar home....with edges slopped with paint because they were not even taped off. If I was the new owner of that house, even if I knew nothing about art, my first investment would be some wall paint and a roller.

Although this book was visually nice to look at I found it lacked in teaching me how to paint murals. I have stumbled across a great site that has free tutorials on it. I hope you find this helpful. The site is [...]

As a decorative artist I found this book somewhat revolting. Then again, I didn't know Donna Dewberry's work before.Well, she is great at the one stroke painting tecnique if that's what You like, You'll find some of that, but She can't draw at all.Wherever any basic drawing skills are required ,she just doesn't cut it.Her colors are in place though, and the book fills You in on the basics, here and there, but it's not detailed enough for a complete beginner, or would mislead him/her, and just useless for a pro.I keep it as a reference for clients, who like this folksy style, but I find it rather primitive.

2 out of 5 stars Not typically Donna!.......2002-03-22

Donna Dewberry consistently produces fine detailed instructional books.........this book on murals is not much more than a "see what Donna did" book, the photographer did a brilliant job......... No patterns, no detail, I could care less what part of a house has these painted walls ,(content is divided by rooms). I bought the book to learn HOW she did it. Lot of pictures, beginners beware, you admire her, you wish to paint her technique, this book will tell you next to ZIP!

3 out of 5 stars Splendid Ideas Photographed Perfectly.......2001-07-29

Being a huge Donna Dewberry fan, I was not at all surprised when I opened this book. The pictures are fabulous and Donna's murals provide the reader with a plethora of ideas for many aspects of home decorating. Donna's books seem to have a magical quality about them making even the novice painter feel as though he/she could paint anything!

However, after I was mesmorized by the artwork, I felt disappointed with the lack of directions for each project. All of the other Dewberry books give explicit instructions, worksheets and patterns, this one does not. After studying this book intensely, I was left with the feeling one gets while looking at an Art book, like " gosh, what a talented artist, I wish I could create like that." In otherwords, instead of inspiring me and building my confidence as her other books have done so consistently, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of my budding talent. I think I'll stick to her other books and just use this not for reference, but as an addition to my coffee table.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, Important, But Limited.......2000-12-03

                                    E. Anthony Rotundo has written the book, American Manhood, to show the historical development of the concept of manhood throughout the nineteenth century in order to understand, to a certain extent, the idea of manhood within our own historical time. He focuses on a very narrow group of men for this study: Northern, white Yankees of middle and upper class pretensions. This is an influential group for this period but it does feel that the entire picture of the changes evident in American manhood at the beginning of the twentienth century might have been better understood by including a knowledge of different forms of manhood that were emerging from the burgeoning immigrant population. That being said this study is an important and necessary one to begin the further work needed on this topic and Mr. Rotundo provides many unique and important insights on this topic. An interesting book and a good beginning for more work on the gender politics involved in changing ideas of masculinity.

5 out of 5 stars A very good place to begin.......2000-08-05

To learn about the culture of manhood, a good place to begin is with a good, strong, well documented history. This is, indeed, a good place to begin. Positing male sociolization within a context that includes its affect on women and children and the family in general, Rotundo is able to place the history of work, virtue, romance and identity in a way that makes sense in terms of where we've been. Hopefully, this will give us a clear first step in terms of where we go from here. Any book that clarifies, from the very beginning, the difference between *gender* and *sex*, is a book that has a good chance of knowing what it is talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching book about men.......2000-01-08

I've used this book in my graduate seminar introducing students to the study of the social sciences, and they loved it. I've also used it in my 12th grade gender studies class, and its sections on boy culture and youthful romantic friendships helped students decide that the study of past lives was worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars "must" reading if you're interested in American manhood.......1999-10-15

I read this book because I am interested in pioneering a new "scouting" program for Christian young people. Rotundo's work has cut new ground; essentially there are few, if any, works available which have made the primary and secondary research connections made in his text. Because I have a greater understanding of previous manhood paradigms, I believe I will be better able to construct the pedogogical parameters of my program. Rotundo's text, incidently, should be read by feminists; it is likely they would develop a more sensitive approach to the objectives they would like to accomplish.

Born in Latvia, Adja Yunkers (1900-1983) was an adventuresome and peripatetic artist, whose career developed over five continents and whose contributions to the visual and intellectual dialogue of modernism were significant. Marek Bartelik has set forth the story of his life and art against the brilliant backdrop of the changing political, cultural, and social climates of his times. Richly illustrated, the text by Bartelik follows Yunkers's poetic and visual journey through many countries and pictorial strategies. An important Abstract Expressionist, Yunkers also contributed to other movements, such as German Expressionism, Surrealism, and Social Realism. Bartelik discusses the artist's subtle pastels, virtuosic paintings, and experimental prints with an intimate and engaging style. You will enjoy this book for its insights and gorgeously produced images as well as for its scholarship on this intriguing, searching artist.
