Book Description
They were men of principle. They were willing to fight for the cause. And willing to die for it. They stood their ground for justice in one of the greatest countries on earth: the United States of America. This is their story . . . an impressive history of the American Civil War, through the eyes of the men who lived it. The men of the Pennsylvania Bucktail Regiment, who, with courage and determination, contributed to a Northern victory.
The book is based on 144 letters written by two civil veterans and others. The battle scenes are vivid, the story compelling. Because, without them, history would not have been the same.

Should be 0 stars.......2003-04-14
William W. Means' "Corporal Brewer: A Bucktail Survivor" is a poorly written, overlong history of the Civil War, contradicting its own stated purpose of "reliving the days of one 'dogface.'" The acknowledgement page alone demonstrates the book's problems. Means stated he was grateful to Richard Summers at the Carlisle Military Institue [sic]. He couldn't have been that grateful or he would have correctly identified Dr. Richard Sommers at the U.S. Army Military History Institute, Carlisle. That sloppiness is found on every page, at least those I read. I admit I could not tolerate much.
The book's one blessing is the printing of the letters of Cpl. Wallace Brewer as well as some of the letters of Sgt. Angelo M. Crapsey, both of Company I, 1st Pennsylvania Rifles. I am very familiar with Angelo Crapsey material (and much more that Means did not print) and know that he made many errors and draws incorrect conclusions. Means did not do his homework.
"Corporal Brewer" was obviously a labor of love by a WWII vet and retired educator. The potential was there for an interesting book. Unfortunately, he dived into the English Channel without first learning how to swim. Canada's Commonwealth Publications published his book, a vanity press that is now out of business, understandable if this was the typical caliber of its product. It's also understandable that only a vanity press would publish Means' book. I saw his manuscript: a weight lifter's delight in excess of 1,500 typed pages that converts to about 726 pages of very small print (in the 1996 edition) with no index, one photo on the cover, no maps, and almost no footnotes. Look at the bibliography. He read a lot of books on the Civil War - all secondary sources - and parroted them, throwing in the letters in chronological order. Proper editing would cut at least 500 pages to match Mr. Means' stated goal in writing the book.
144 never published letters written by 2 Civil War Vets.......1999-04-03
This historic novel describes the American Civil War through the eyes of the men who lived it. The Pennsylvania Bucktails with courage and determination contributed to a Northern victory! It's one of the greatest books I have ever written, but my original publisher went out of business. LOOKING FOR A NEW PUBLISHER!!!!!!!!!!

Health o Meter HDC100-01 "Grow with Me" Teddy Bear Scale for Babies and Toddlers
ASIN: 0716738317 |
Book Description
At the time her nine-year-old son was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Joan Richards was deeply involved in writing a book about the life and work of the nineteenth-century mathematician Augustus De Morgan. Immersed in this abstract, logical world of science, Richards was forced by her son's sudden illness to confront a different kind of reality--the irrational world of a serious family illness and its consequences.
An intellectual memoir, Angles of Reflection portrays a woman deeply enmeshed in two male-dominated worlds--nineteenth century mathematics and twentieth century research academics--struggling to integrate the competing demands of family and career without sacrificing one to the other. As the strain of caring for her sick child mounts, Richards' view of De Morgan broadens to include his family in ways that both illuminate his work and force her to reevaluate her own career and relationships. In the process, she gives new meaning to the term "applied mathematics" by drawing life lessons out of De Morgan's logic, Newton's absolute space and time, and Leibnitz's relative visions of reality. She emerges from her ordeal profoundly altered, with a new appreciation of the ways that life, family, and work can inform and enrich one another.
Filled with insightful discussions of the debates among some of the finest mathematical minds of the 17th through 19th centuries, Angles of Reflection is both an intellectual journey through the history of mathematics and a gripping testament to maternal love.

Divided Lives Redux.......2000-11-14
I just spent the past Saturday afternoon reading _Angles of Reflection_ by Joan L. Richards and was quite moved by it. For anyone who has had to grapple with balancing work and family -- including in academics where one's schedule is flexible but at times consuming and unpredictable -- this book is a must read along with other similar volumes, such as _Divided Lives_ and _True North_. Richards's depictions of "mother's time" and "professional time", as well as the conflict between the two, could very well have been a chapter in Alan Lightman's _Einstein's Dreams_. German culture is not a very hospitable environment for working mothers, but Richards navigates skillfully through maternal care, professional meetings, and daily annoyances like sharply abbreviated hours for grocery shopping. Her depiction of the German medical system, a form of socialized medicine, might be looked upon as idiosyncratic and Byzantine by all except those of us who have to deal with American HMO's on a regular basis. Past and present, as well as life and art, overlap in this deliciously engrossing volume: as she cares for her son, Richards works through the intricacies of her biographies of Augustus and Sophia De Morgan and finds in their child, Alice, a parallel story of parental concern. Richards's story reminded me of a statement attributed to Jackie Kennedy Onassis: when asked about raising her children, she is supposed to have said, "If I fail at this, nothing else matters." Above all else, Richards's love and care for her two boys shine through this volume, even on pages dense with Newton, the De Morgans, and probability theory. This book, written in the tradition of Jill Ker Conway, is required reading for anyone, but especially for those curious about how the thinking lives of academics intersects with the practical and emotional lives of the everyday world. Highly recommended.
Good writing, but the point being made is hard to make out.......2000-11-11
I found this book to be very well written, and at the beginning I had high hopes that I would like it very much. However, I found that as the book went on, I was less and less sure what point the author was trying to make and just what the focus of the book was supposed to be. What the author's son Ned went through with two unrelated and severe medical problems was compelling to read about, but not really enough to carry the book. The math history parts of the book often seemed quite unrelated to the main tale. Perhaps the book was a way to expose the many uncaring or distant medical professionals the author encountered, but this was not tied together into a real message. Or perhaps the author was telling her story to justify her decision not to return to the States with her son once he ran into medical troubles in Germany---which in my eyes didn't really need justifying---I would not see Germany as having less competant medical care than the US. In any case, I found the ending a bit unfinished---I didn't really see how all of a sudden Ned's elbow was fixed, and we were not told much about the final outcome of his seizures or his brain surgery, although the book was published at least 3 years after these problems started. I feel there could have been a much better book here with more focus and more of a unified point. However, I did finish the book and am still thinking about it--a sign of something worth reading.
Many angles to reflect upon.......2000-11-11
I have read this book twice, and recommended it to several friends, and find it a most complex and multi-faceted tale. On the one hand a poignant account of a sick child, and an examination of the difficult decisions everyone has to make under uncertainty, it is much more than that as it weaves Newton, Leibniz and Augustus de Morgan and the choices they made into the story. It was in many ways a brave decision of Joan Richards to write and publish this book, and those who read it can judge for themselves her success--I found it riveting, and even better on the second reading.
For the love of angles.......2000-05-12
I want it for my mom she is and angle and she should be in this book!!!
Degrees of Knowledge.......2000-05-10
"Angles of Reflection" is a both a well-told story and interesting examination of how we deal with uncertainty. The main story--that of a mother and son dealing with the boy's serious illnesses--is compelling and poignant. The account of the fears and frustrations that Joan Richards faces as she struggles to care for her son will resonate with anyone who has cared for a sick child. While the story is a sad one, the love and courage it illustrates makes it enjoyable and ultimately uplifting.
What makes this book more than just a good story is that Richards weaves into the book the account of her work, studying the Victorian mathematician Augustus DeMorgan. She connects DeMorgan's work on the meaning of probability with the terrible uncertainty she faces about the life of her son. As she tries to balance her work and caring for her son, Richards is haunted by a letter of DeMorgan's. The letter in which DeMorgam first proposes the famous "four color" problem was written just before the death of his daughter, and yet he seems completely unaware of her illness.
Richards is both a talented novelist and an insightful scholar of mathematical history. The way she combines these two talents makes for a unique and wonderful book. I highly recommend it: it is the most enjoyable book I have read in a long time, and it also made me realize how the way we view the world scientifically and mathematically affects how we view it emotionally and personally.

Wide shoulders, narrow waist, thick chest, muscular arms and legs: today's male ideal physique is the same as that of ancient Greece. Aerobics and the Food Pyramid just won't yield that shape, argues Lou Schuler, certified strength-and-conditioning specialist and fitness director of Men's Health magazine. For weight loss and the Greek physique, he proposes the "T" (testosterone) plan: weightlifting and a diet of 33 percent each carbs (mostly low-glycemic-index), fat (the "good" kind), and protein; no alcohol; and minimal sweets and processed food. The book includes a meal planner, grocery list, and recipes. A 100-page, clearly illustrated weightlifting program progresses from circuit training to bodybuilding to power lifting, with both home and gym exercises.
This research-based program was tested on 16 willing, hefty guys. After nine weeks, they lost an average of 18 pounds, dropped waist inches, gained strength and energy, and improved their sex lives. The book includes before-and-after photos and quotes from the happy campers.
Schuler's man-to-man style is clear, direct, and witty ("one gorilla wearing a stringy tank in July is all it takes to leave a bench soaked in ectoplasm"). The Testosterone Advantage Plan is recommended for men willing to commit to a rigorous lifting program to achieve their ideal physique. --Joan Price
Book Description
EAT LIKE A MAN TO LOOK LIKE A MAN
For years now, the so-called experts have told you to avoid the foods you love. That you're supposed to ditch the weight room and jog your way to maximum fitness. And that testosterone -- the hormone that makes you a man -- is actually a problem for you, rather than the solution to your problems. In the meantime, American men have kept getting fatter and more frustrated. Which is why we've looked into all this, and from what we've learned, we can tell you -- the know-it-alls are know-nothings.
The Testosterone Advantage Plan is about realizing your full potential as a man, and will
-
show you how nature intended you to eat.
- explain how the male body differs in its nutritional needs from the female body -- especially when it comes to the proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are not bad for you.
- give you a superior workout regimen to help you attain the muscular physique you've always wanted.
- explain how you can boost your testosterone and energy levels naturally, without supplements or quick-fix fads.
- help you tick off the long list of benefits you'll likely reap in terms of energy and enthusiasm, power and potency, confidence and charisma.
This much you know: What you've done in the past hasn't worked. Why not try it our way? You have everything to gain -- and nothing to lose except your gut.
Customer Reviews:
Utterly bone-headed.......2007-05-08
The worst kind of [...] imaginable. This book advocates a zero cardio training approach, which is completely brainless. Research has proven that weight loss is the result of less calories in vs. calories out. Intense cardio training is the most time efficient way to burn calories. When coupled with a reasonably calorie restricted diet, this is what burns fat. Period.
Weightlifting makes you look pretty, and is an important part of the whole, but the authors place far too much emphasis on it. Research has proven that building muscle DOES NOT dramatically increase metabolism. It makes you look nice, is fun, builds stronger bone structure etc., but has only minimal effect on overall metabolism.
Their diet is too high fat and too high protein. They need to read Nancy Clark's Sport Nutrition Guidebook. Year's of research prove that you can build lots of muscle with only a 15% protein intake. Carbs assist with protein synthesis and provide energy and are by far the most important part of the diet.
They do get a few things right: progressive overload, avoiding bad fats, staying away from supplements etc., but these are buried in piles of bad information. They only have pictures of six guys from the original 30, and they don't look that impressive. No testosterone testing was done to "prove" their "claims" about boosting it.
Finally, the writing is terrible. Maybe if my IQ was significantly lower I would get motivated by the chest-thumping garbage, but I just found it overly cheezy.
New Perspective, No New Info.......2006-09-12
Very persuasive in it's presentation that men have to eat like men, but outside of that there is really no new info. Probably an easier way to begin a healthy diet/lifestyle.
It's my bible.......2006-08-13
This book is fantastic. The authors dispell many myths surrounding the differing nutrional and exercise needs of men and women. It may come as a shock to many, especially the editors of the Library Journal, that men and women are indeed different.
Besides the workouts and diet advice, one of the book's greatest contributions is exposing the defects in the government's "Food Guide Pyramid," as well as putting the lie to much of the conventional nutrition and workout wisdom out there these days.
"Eat like a man to look like a man." Excellent advice. I highly recommend this book.
A note on the Library Journal's comments: Why would I have to "plow through the book's chest-thumping"? I'm a guy, isn't that the point? I LIKE chest-thumping!
Will help you get in shape and keep at the top.- From someone that lost more than 200 lbs.......2006-07-18
Eat like a Man. Look like a Man. "The Testosterone Advantage Plan" is, like its title suggest a plan to burn fat and gain muscle mass written just for men. The book proposes an eating and exercise plan to boost testosterone levels naturally, without supplements of any kind. The book emphasizes on exercises programs for the weight room and does not support aerobic exercises as a tool to get in shape.
I bought this book four years ago, and I liked its eating strategies to maximize muscle gain and fat loss, but since I an such an enthusiast of aerobic exercise (running and jogging) I used what they suggest for the exercise program and combined it with my running sessions anyway.
I lost more than 200 lbs about six years ago, during a period of about eight months, and went from pants 44 to 32. Prior to star changing my eating and exercise habits I bought "Men's Health Hardbody Plan" which is another excellent, easy to read, comprehensive and complete reference that I give most of the credit for my success. I already have lost all the weight I wanted by the time I bought "The Testosterone Advantage Plan", but I found the advices in this book most useful to keep the weight off through an easy to follow eating plan, and used its advices for the gym. With both books I have been able to keep the weight off for more than six years.
In short terms, based on my experience I can recommend this book, and it's a great reading as well.
Another tools you may want to consider, to complement this book and your strategies for boosting your metabolism, loosing weight, and even more important keeping that weight off are:
- A Body Fat Monitor or Scale. This will help you monitor your progress, to assure that the weight you are loosing is fat (fat lost = increased metabolism) and not muscle, water or bone mass (decreased metabolism).
- "Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss", which is another very practical, readable and insightful book, focused on how to boost your metabolism.
- "The Abs Diet: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life".
- A Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch. This is an excellent tool that will help you monitor and control your Heart Rate in order to keep yourself in a burning fat state (increased metabolism).
- "The Hard Body Guide". Excellent strategies, programs and workouts, aimed to increase your muscle mass.
If you are focused only on your diet, the first three may be worth considering. If you exercise, or want to start doing it right, the last two are for you. If you do both, all the four recommended options can improve your results.
Excellent!.......2006-03-26
"The Testosterone Advantage" is a well-written and informative book with a misleading title. A better title would have been "Dieting & Exercise for Men." The book has two main parts: one part is all about diet, the other about exercise (especially weight-bearing exercise).
Unlike many books, "The Testosterone Advantage" has a concrete formula for figuring out what you should eat. Depending upon your age, and goal (weight loss or muscular gain) you can use this book to determine how many calories you should consume, and in what proportions (i.e. carbs, protein, and fats).
The exercise portion of the book explains why some aerobic exercise is good, but too much actually causes the body to catabolize (break down) the very muscle that you work so hard to build (not to mention the effect that extreme aerobic exercise has on joint tissue). Instead, the authors tell us, concentrate on anaerobic exercise, which will not only create muscle, but also bone mass and better joints. Much better than the nebulous advice given by other books (for example, like "Body for Life").

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites, a trusted cookbook.......2004-07-29
This book is one of my kitchen standards. I've had it for years, and have given it as a gift several times. As we have been eating less meat over the years, this book continues to be more useful. I'm part Lebanese, and find these recipes to taste as authentic as my relatives' traditional dishes. No wonder the book continues to be popular.
One of the best cookbooks.......2002-07-06
I don't own many cookbooks, though I must have read hundreds. Most don't seem to be that authentic; they put in ingredients people want - usually lots of cheese. This book is one of the most authentic ever written, and it's probably the finest Lebanese cookbook. The recipes are simple, and the photos are pretty minimalist, but the food is fantastic. Buy this book!
Excellent Cookbook for Vegetarians and Non Vegetarians Alike.......2002-01-22
This is one of our favorite cookbooks. My wife and I use it for all types of occasions and are constantly inspired by the book's use of ingredients. We highly recommend this book to those looking to learn more about traditional Lebanese food, as well as those looking for great tasting Middle Eastern inspired vegetarian food.
The best of Middle East cooking.......2001-03-28
Lebanese cooking is the queen of Middle-eastern cuisine. (If you are lucky enough to live in the Northeastern US where Lebanese restaurants are to be found, you can experience this yourself.)
The Lebanese are particularly skilled with vegetarian foods like beans and salads. You can make hummus (chickpea and sesame puree dip) yourself instead of paying high prices for average preparations in the grocery store. Also, the tabbouleh recipe here is wonderful. This is a salad of soaked bulgur wheat (a bit like a pasta or rice, made of cooked, dehydrated cracked wheat berries) and tomatoes, parsley and lemon. It's refreshing and great for summer and to take to covered dish parties.
You don't need meat to make good Lebanese food, as this book amply demonstrates. This is now one of our kitchen standards, and it really adds color and life to the vegetarian table.
A wonderful guide for exploring Lebanese cooking........1998-08-05
This easy to read, easy to follow recipe book contains many Lebanese and Middle Eastern recipes common to almost all Americans (hummus) and goes beyond them to offer many other simple but elegant and wonderful dishes. The color photos demonstrate how the foods are traditionally served.
The book also contains information on ingredients unknown to the typical American chef, and some background on Lebanese cooking. Many of the recipes are easy, requiring only ingredients found in any neighborhood supermarket.
The book's only weakness is the state-by-state list of Middle Eastern grocers; numerous long-time grocers in my area, for example, are not included.
As an introduction and immersion into Lebanese vegetarian cuisine, this one's a winner.

Perfect present!.......2003-10-31
A good friend gave me this book for my birthday. It is absolutely unique--I have not seen another book like it. From the vibrantly colored flowers to Dietmar's truly one-of-a-kind artistic vision, Flower Album has found a very happy home on my bookshelf (plus, it makes for a great conversation starter when sitting on the coffeetable). Both thought-provoking and original, I highly recommend this to anyone who loves flora, fauna, and/or photography!

Customer Reviews:
I am in this book.......2006-11-09
When I was 13 I underwent a spinal fusion for scoliosis. During this time I was a part of a support group for scoliosis run by Brooke Lyons and after my surgery, Brooke chose to feature me in her book. After reading it I felt people suffering from this disease would have a good resource and I felt good knowing I could help with that. In addition I think everyone's story was really inspiring.
Wonderful!.......2003-02-22
I was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and began a search for more information. A woman on an online forum pointed me towards this book. I picked it up and read it in one sitting. The language is not overly complex- very understandable. But gave me a much better understanding of my condition, and what can be done about it. The individual patient's stories were also pretty inspirational.
Informative.......2001-05-18
This book has help me understand in great detail how the spine vertbrae's are linked. With the surgeons letter i was able to see what parts of the spine where affected on my son. This helped to inform me, in a manner in which is easy to understand as the book is written in PLAIN English. I would Reccommend this book to parents or people with Scoliosis wishing to be informed without medical terms.Helps take away the fear of the unkown.rating by me 8 out 10.
great source of information!!.......2001-04-18
This is a wonderful story (stories) about a real-life disease that remains with you for life. Brooke put real-life experiences of so many different people in this story. Living with scoliosis all my life (33 years), I am now faced with surgery. Even though my younger sister had surgery 13 years ago and has been my real-life source book, Brooke's compilation of facts, stories, and statistics has really been informative and inspiring. Extremely well-written. Thanks for giving us current and compassionate information!!! And congratulations from a nearby neighbor!!
A Moveable Feast.......2000-10-08
Fortitously picking up a copy, I noticed the picture of the author's back on the cover. What a babe! Her beauty compelled me to not only buy it for coffee table display but also to read it! It is both well written and informative. A veritable tour de force. Read it!
