Book Description
"Dear Folks" is a collection of letters written by a young soldier to his family during World War II from his first day at an Army Reception Center to his last, leaving Frankfort, Germany, Headquarters of the US Army of Occupation. These letters read like a diary depicting a GI's daily experience in basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, assignment as a clerk in a bureaucratic outfit at Ft. Meade, Maryland where daily hundreds of citizen soldiers were processed in anticipation of the D-day invasion, and the further adventures of this soldier in wartime Paris on assignment with the War Department Observers Board accompanying his Colonel who was on a special reporting mission covering the Armored Divisions in battles across Western Europe.
The letters cover in astonishing detail the daily routine of the GI at two major military installations, the relatively luxurious life of a GI in recently liberated Paris and the less than glamorous life of the GI on the battle front following Patton's Army across Northern France and Germany with revealing accounts of local reaction to both Allied conquests and the final liberation of the city of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. It's an intimate history of World War II life and culture recording the popular music and movies of the time, the cost of common, everyday items of purchase and foremost, the general attitude to wartime life by both the GI and their civilian relatives.
The very personal content of the original letters has been edited out but enough retained to reveal the close family ties of the soldier and the warm family support. This is history experienced by one teen-age soldier in World War II told in his own words.
Book Description
While the great minds of science, financed by the biggest companies in the world, wrestled with 19th century answers to a 20th century problem, Philo T. Farnsworth, age 14, dreamed of trapping light in an empty jar and transmitting it, one line at a time, on a magnetically deflected beam of electrons.
Philo Farnsworth was a self-educated farm boy from Rigby, Idaho, when he first sketched his idea for electronic television on a blackboard for his high school science teacher. Six years later, while competitors still struggled with mechanical television systems, Farnsworth successfully demonstrated his invention. He was 21.
In 1930, Farnsworth was awarded the fundamental patents for modern television. He spent the next decade perfecting his invention, fighting off challenges to his patents by the giant Radio Corporation of America and defending his vision against his own shortsighted investors who did not share his larger dream of scientific independence.
The Boy Who Invented Television traces Farnsworth's "guided tour" of discovery, describing the observations he made in the course of developing his initial invention, and revealing how his unique insights brought him to the threshold of what might have been an even greater discoveryclean, safe, and unlimited energy from controlled nuclear fusion.
Customer Reviews:
Who Invented the Remote Control?
.......2003-05-19
We know the inventor of electric lighting, and we know who turned mass production assembly lines into affordable automobiles. Nicola Tesla invented the alternating current motors we use today, invented radio, invented fluorescent lighting, discovered X-rays, and yet failed to cash in or get credit, and wound up dying at an advanced age in a transient hotel.
This book is the bio of an Philo T. Farnsworth, a young man who walked away from the obscurity of his rural agricultural background into a Teslian style obscurity, after a lifetime of brilliant work.
This American inventor eventually turned to inertial containment as the solution to controlled fusion for electrical power generation.
The account in this book of his fusion work is interesting, and includes a tantalizing incident in which fusion may have been achieved, briefly. Much more important than who invented the intelligence vacuum (TV) vs. who got the credit for it is the discussion of Farnsworth's breakthroughs in fusion and his being frozen out by the US government et al.
The current laser inertial containment research (Sandia Labs' Z-Machine dumps 290 trillion watts of X-rays onto a sample target as of four years ago) owes a debt to Farnsworth. While I personally doubt that fusion will ever reach breakeven regardless of the money poured into it, should it bear fruit Farnsworth will probably get flipped out of the picture.
For television buffs who want to learn how it all began.......2002-11-15
The Boy Who Invented Television is the astonishing biography of Philo T. Farnsworth, who at age 14 dreamed of trapping and transmitting light, and while plowing on his father's farm looked at the parallel rows he had been making and conceived of a practical and effective way to wirelessly beam information from one point to another which concept resulted in his 1930 fundamental patent for modern television. Farnsworth's struggle against challenges from the Radio Corporation from America, his fight to protect his vision from reticent investors, and his work that would forever change the world and modern communications, is presented in a highly readable narrative enhanced with black-and-white photographs. The Boy Who Invented Television is very highly recommended reading -- especially for television buffs who want to learn how it all really began!
Interesting biography.......2002-11-08
I really enjoyed this engaging biography of Philo T. Farnsworth. The science of the book was mostly understandable to a layperson, and I found myself rooting for Farnsworth all the way. I could really sympathize with his triumphs and his losses, and I was so saddened and angry at the way he was treated toward the end of his life. It seems a real shame that he has not gotten the recognition he deserves, and I'm glad this book is out to give him the publicity due him.
much more interesting than anything actually on TV!.......2002-10-20
This is a book that you won't be able to put down. It's one of those true stories that is much more interesting than anything you could make up! This book is a must for creative types, the self-employed, television fans, guys who hang out in Radio Shack, and anybody who loves to hear about how the underdog can come back and win it all! Everybody who owns a TV should read this book because we'd all have a much greater appreciation for it!!
A broad perspective on Philo T. Farnsworth.......2002-10-18
I enjoyed the riveting story. I also got the sense, with all the references and footnotes, that this was a carefully researched book. Being an electrical engineer myself, I appreciated that there was enough technical information without loosing the understanding of lay readers. I found no technical
blunders, that often come in biographies of technical wizards.
In this book, it becames clear that there are technological breakthroughs that can only come from a great mind, and not from the "inevitable" march of technology.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2007-06-16
Very informative and beautifully illustrated, this is the best book on breastfeeding that I have seen. It is full of useful information on positioning and other basics. Shares the personal experiences of breastfeeding mothers, and has a great section for trouble shooting. Clearly explains the importance of both foremilk and hindmilk, and how to ensure your baby receives both.
AMAZING!!!!!!.......2007-03-06
This is by far the very BEST breastfeeding book I have ever read. It has TONS of actual pics of mommas breastfeeding their children and that is so helpful. Most breastfeeding books generally only have drawings of breastfeeding moms and babies, and while that is ok it is not always helpful. This book is so amazing. I was unsuccessful in nursing my first daughter, and I really think it was from lack of support and knowledge in what I was doing. This book is so informative, so helpful and full of encouragement. Its like your own personal support system in a book. I know I will be 100% successful breastfeeding my next little one. : )
A Must Have.......2006-11-11
I extremely enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to anyone planning on breastfeeding!
If you're going to breastfeed, and especially if you aren't planning on taking a short course in it at the hospital, I'd say this is a fine substitute. It basically covers nearly everything you need to know, from the physical aspect of how breastfeeding works, to how you properly do it, to common mistakes.
I, myself took the class my hosptial offered so a lot of this book was repetition for me. And, while the first few days I had a very hard time, after that it was smooth sailing. However, I did have some questions about things my baby was doing once in a while and was concerned, I thought maybe the book could help. Had I had this book at home already from day 1, I think I could have gotten more use out of it, since I was having latch-on issues (then). The book covered this in great detail, I don't think you could ask for a better book from that aspect- latch-on, how to know if baby has had enough, how to position yourself/baby etc. Anyway, the concerns I was having, and I'm sure a lot of moms have different issues once things are going well but then something pops up- the book didn't help me with. One main thing I think I would have liked more help with would be how what you're eating affects baby, and when your baby has bad gas problems. I know a lot of moms have problems with this, as well as fussy times, and we often wonder if it's something in our milk and what we can do about it...So while I feel the book is missing a few things and/or should have gone into greater detail about certain things; I'm still convinced this is one of the best books out there.
Overall, if you are going to breastfeed, get this book! It's awesome to have on hand, it also covers things like common myths and has some case studies of women who had different difficulties. The price for this book is so reasonable and I think what it gives you is priceless!
WAS having problems..........2006-05-31
I spoke with a lactation consultant at the hospital before I was released with my first daughter, and thought I had breastfeeding down pat. Boy was I wrong! I was really sore in no time and had a lot of frustration. I was hesitant to go to the consultant again for fear of being judged by such a "pro". I bought this book, took it's advice of having my husband compare what I was doing to the book and poof! my problem was recognized and solved! I would recommed this book to anyone who is having problems breastfeeding but really wants to continue to try it.
This book is the reason for my successful breastfeeding!.......2006-04-11
I failed to get my son to successfully latch and breastfeed 3 years ago because I really had no idea how to hold him and how to help him latch correctly. This book taught me how to do both and now I am successfully breastfeeding my daughter!!! This book has many excellent photos and tips for breastfeeding. My only complaint is that it doesn't address moms going back to work and/or pumping.

Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2005-10-10
This cookbook uses some prepared foods from the store (such as already roasted red peppers) to make good tasting easy to prepare dinners. So while I can roast my own red peppers or make many of my own sauces, by using some already processed foods I can make delicious meals in a short amount of time.
The directions are clear and easy to understand. Most of the recipes do not require unusual or hard to find ingredients. The results are great. I have made many meals that are requested by my family members.
For a busy mother like me who likes to cook and doesn't have time to do it all from scratch this is a good compromise.
Worth the money. Enjoy.
Almost from Scratch.......2005-07-03
This book looks very interesting and should be a big help for my family. I look forward to trying the recipes
Hungry Grad Student.......2004-12-31
My sister-in-law received this book for christmas and since then we've had something from it every night including yummy pork chops coated in stuffing, a rice chopped clerey and carrots side, salsa meatloaf, and more. I am a graduate student and get little variety in the food I 'cook' and will be buying this to make quick good meals instead of meal in a can.
Not your mother's Campbell Soup recipes!.......2004-10-24
I got this from the library and was really intrigued by the creative uses of things like gourmet dips and cheese spreads to make sauces for fish, pasta etc. Inspired, last night I created my own delicious sauce for steamed hake using a crab and lobster dip from the fish counter (about $4.00). The fish was on sale so the steep price for a small container wasn't as bad as it sounds considering I fed myself, my husband and my three teenagers with some sauce left over for vegetables or to add to soup or whatever. I steamed the fish in water, sherry, a few sprigs of fresh dill and thyme, and thinly sliced onions. I added a mix of fresh cauliflower and brocolli florets (from the salad bar!) and a couple of cans of whole baby potatos (unsalted). When the fish and veggies were done, I plated it up, removed the herbs and whisked in the dip with a chunk of butter and some more sherry 'till I had a slightly thin sauce teeming with tidbits of lobster and crab meat. Delish!
This book has recipes but the author also encourages you to experiment on your own and provides suggestions for doing so. I am definitely adding this one to my collection.
BTW, there is a nice section for vegetarian convenience foods like 'chicken' patties. My daughters will appreciate these since all we ever do with veggie burgers and such is grill 'em and stick 'em in a bun with condiments. The author suggests baking the 'chicken' cutlets in a sauce. Another veggie suggestion is using veggie burgers for a quick and easy falafel type sandwich in pita bread. I don't know why I never thought of that myself.
No more fast foods.......2004-08-16
I also went to my library for this one first. What a great book--it's on order now. At first glance I thought, "Whoops; strictly gourmet and not what I'm looking for." However, after sitting down and slowly going through the book, it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Wonderful biscotti out of corn meal mix, and the recipe can be adapted by using slightly different ingredients each time. How many times have we bought a specialty ingredient for a recipe, using part of it and eventually throwing the rest away? Thanks to this book, we can now use up the remainder. I love the way multiple recipes throughout the book use the same specialty ingredients in completely different ways. What a treat -- I can only say YUMMMMM!!!

Customer Reviews:
Lovely Hats/Caps and portable instructions!.......2006-12-11
I bought this book a year ago and do not regret it at all. When I opened the package I was impressed that the majority of hats had so much style and charm. I've made 3 hats from this box so far and will be making a fourth soon. My first was the Marseille pattern, challenging because of the twist technique used, but so worth it. I live in that hat! My next was Fifth Avenue, similar style to Marseille but much easier technique. My last was the On Broadway pattern, super fast and easy. I have not tried any of the scarf patterns yet, but will be soon. The individual cards are lamenated and is easily portable. The reference guide comes in handy too. This is the best of the Little Box crochet series.
Cute projects, great portability!.......2005-09-29
The presentation of this delightful little book is quite original: a sturdy chipboard box with attached lid opens up to reveal 21 folded cards made of heavy cardstock, 20 of which are devoted to matching hats and scarves that you can crochet with ease.
These cute fashions are quite trendy and fun to make, and the portability of the designer cards makes it easy to crochet-on-the-go. The first card is called Madison Avenue and features a crocheted hat and matching short scarf. Open the card to find complete instructions for making both projects; the back of the card features a color photo of the scarf alone.
There are 40 great projects in all, each made with inspirational color choices and a variety of different fibers.
-Sharilyn Miller, author of Bead on a Wire
Strange Hats!.......2005-08-31
When I opened the box of patterns I couldn't believe what I saw. The first hat pattern was something called Madison Ave., made with Kureyon yarn. I immediately thought of the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy is in Paris and is coveting the lastest French fashion. Ricky gets a horse feed-bag and passes it off as a designer hat. Well, this is the hat! Then there is On the Boardwalk, a 12 oz., oversized 2-toned, porkpie hat that would defintely get you mocked and pointed at in any neighborhood. Another goofy hat is Fun City, a long stocking cap more suitable for a child than a grown woman. Tennessee Hills, a floppy brimmed number, needed the addition of a plaid bow to hide it's hideousness. There are also 2 berets, 2 open work granny stitch hats, a hat made with a granny squares border, 8 more cloches that all look the same, and a couple of others that defy definition. The only hat I liked was Windy City Chicago. I made 4 of these already. But beware of the hook size. It calls for a G/7 4.5mm hook. Most G hooks are G/6 a 4.25mm.
The scarves are decent and instead of the hats, the authors should have done 40 of them instead of pairing them off with the hats from hell!
20 hat and scarves sets.......2005-06-08
Fantastic designs on easy to use take along cards. Mix and match the hats and scarves so many possibilities here. They have included a great carry along card that has the hook sizes, abbreviations, and the standard yarn weight system. Would be a great gift or even a way to learn how to use different types/weights of yarn.

Discontinued Yarns .......2005-12-17
It's very disappointing that many of the nicest scarves are nice because of a yarn, most likely discontinued by now, and not because of the reason you buy this box: the pattern.
knitting girl.......2005-09-21
I saw the first box of scarves and thought there were great. I was very disappointed when I opened this box. The designs are not desirable.
More Melissa Patterns!.......2005-08-08
I first off have to say that I'm a touch in awe of Melissa Mathay. She used to own a shop in Manhattan and I went in almost every day to see what she was wearing.
Somehow she was able to knit up a new top or accessory at the touch of her needles. She is an awesome pattern maker; as I think that the beauty of the yarn
comes first with her. That said, you can be sure that any pattern in any book that
Melissa has designed will be simple but with a twist. I am so glad that she has started this 'In a Box' series. Some of the patterns are familiar to me from 20 years ago, so you know that they are also timeless. I hope that she does vests, cardis, etc.
I'm really looking forward to 'Baby Items in a box' because nobody does a baby sweater like her. Her boys were the best dressed babies in Manhattan. If you live
in Minnesota she's got a yarn store there and boy am I jealous.
So please get all of her books, I love them. Melissa - we need you!
What Fun!!.......2005-06-24
This box of scarves has something for everyone -- all knitting levels, dressy and casual and funky, and the yarns are to die for! If you're looking for a gift for the knitter in your life, this would be perfect. I love small knitting projects that I can take on the road with me, or work on while I'm waiting for whatever. One of the beauties of this box of scarf patterns is I can just grab the pattern card I'm working on and stash it in the bag with the yarn -- I don't need to take the whole book or magazine. My Christmas list of gifts to buy just got much smaller and a lot more fun -- folks are going to be getting beautiful scarves made by moi! Happy knitting!!

A comprehensive guide for counseling children of incarcerated parents. 46 full color illustrations. Glossary. Statistic: According to the National Association of School Psychologists, there are approximately 1.5 million children in the United States with a parent in prison. School Counselor.......2002-03-16
I was very misled by the title of this book. I expected a comprehensive counseling guide and instead found a children's picture book. It was disappointing. It is useful as a picture book ... .

Book Description
Estella Conwill Majozo has lead a life of creativity and of leadership in the arts. A respected poet, teacher, and performance artist, Majozo writes eloquently about the deep roots in family and community that have sustained her as well as the conflicts and challenges that have confronted her, as they have many creative and self-aware African-American women over the last half-century.
This memoir traces the paths Majozo has taken from the "Little Africa" section of segregated Louisville through a difficult marriage and a Ph. D. at the University of Iowa, to New York where Majozo has become a member of the hardy cultural community of Harlem. It is a testament to the importance of a life lived in pursuit of cultural heritage, spiritual growth, and personal inegrity.

where's oprah when you need her.......2000-11-09
This book is a real treat to read. I am impressed not only by the writing of this author. She actually has a real movie story in the works. I have read other works by Estella -- This is well written as usual, tasteful, entertaining and family oriented. Thank You so much

Come Out The Wilderness: Memoir of a Black Woman Artist.
This is a book worth reading, however, the first 100 pages are a little slow. The Artist (Stella) is the only girl among five brothers, and is one of the only African American students in her Catholic school. Her attempts to deal with and overcome Sexism and Racism in her home, school and marriages makes for good reading. In her first marriage she is forced to choose between the man she fell in love with and marriage and the person he became. He had problems handling his work related stress caused by racism. His other problems include her holding out sexually until he agreed to marry her, the early birth of their first child and dropping out of college.
