    Book Description

"In the gallery of what might be called the martyrs of thought, the image of Galileo recanting before the Italian Inquisition stirs the minds of educated modern men second only to the picture of Socrates drinking the Hemlock. That image of Galileo is out of focus . . . because it has been distorted by three centuries of rationalist prejudice and clerical polemics. To refocus it clearly, within the logic of its own time . . . de Santillana has written The Crime of Galileo, a masterly intellectual whodunit which traces not the life but the mental footsteps of Galileo on his road to personal tragedy."—Time

5 out of 5 stars The most useful book on Galileo so far.......2002-06-02

If you're just looking for a casual read then perhaps Dava Sobel's 'Galileo's Daughter' or Arthur Koestler's 'The Sleepwalkers' would be more entertaining. But this is where Koestler gets most of his information so why not go straight to the source?
Giorgio de Santillana is obviously a terrific Galileo scholar, making reference to original documents held in the Vatican and other worthwhile resources which put this book on the forefront of academic debate (despite its age).
Santillana's line, that the inquisition was moved to action by Aristotelians (many of whom were Dominicans or Jesuits), though not universally accepted, is well argued. The fact that Pope Urban VIII had been one of Galileo's closest supporters and even opposed the censoring of Copernicus when he was Cardinal Maffeo Barberini makes Santillana's the most plausible explanation. To argue that all the church authorities were adamantly opposed to the Copernican cosmology is to ignore this fact. Though one must also allow for the petulant character of Urban who did not like having his instrumentalist views put into the mouth of a simpleton. These are the two factors which conspired to have Galileo tried for heresy and not simply the scriptural objections.

1 out of 5 stars Distortions of history.......2001-02-21

This book offers a selective and distorted history, apparently in an effort to keep the Catholic Church from suffering blame for unsavory little errors in its past. It is true that Galileo's critique of Aristotelian thought played a strong role, along with his Copernican beliefs, in fueling the attacks on Galileo. But to say that "It was not ... religious convictions that stood in the way but simply ... Aristotelian conditioning and ... fear of scandal" -- that is a baseless and willful rewriting of events. The claim that academics had to "incite church authorities" against Galileo is mere nonsense. Church authorities up to and very specifically including the Pope were adamantly opposed to the Copernican cosmology (which violated the doctrine of biblical inerrancy), and they punished Galileo in order to supress it. Like it or not, that's what happened.

Those interested in what Galileo accomplished and how it got him in trouble might want to try "Galileo Galilei : First Physicist" (Oxford Portriats in Science), by James MacLachlan. This book discusses both the Copernican and Aristotelian controversies. It also gives some background on what was going on in the Catholic Church (pressures generated by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, etc.) It doesn't simply point a finger at the Church and yell, "Bad!" But it's not a whitewash, either. Unless you're looking for a whitewash, you don't need Santillano's book.

5 out of 5 stars Galileo vs. Academia.......1998-06-04

A great book! It appears that Galileo is not the perfect icon, after all, for atheistic, modern day academia. The book shows how academia itself, with complete indifference for truth, erupted against Galileo in an effort to protect cherished allegiances to long held Aristotelian philosophies and misguided ideas. It demonstrates how academia was primarily responsible for the inquisitions and suppressions filed against Galileo, and how they used rhetoric and demagoguery to incite church authorities to become involved. "Those he feared," according to the author, "were the professors," not ecclesiastical authorities (p 8). And "like Galileo, Copernicus had foreseen resistance not at all from the Church authorities but from vested academic interests"(p 16). "It was not ... religious convictions that stood in the way but simply ... Aristotelian conditioning and ... fear of scandal" (p 104). The author supports his case with a thorough and chronological review of the letters and legal records of the time.

    4 out of 5 stars A true horror story.......2002-08-14

Huber's book is a frightening look at what happens when critical, life-influencing decisions for our society are made by a group of people (juries) who's most analytical candidates are rejected in order to provide plaintiffs and their counsel with windfalls.

The concept that all ideas deserve equal attention and truth or falsehood will always be shown in court is flat-out wrong. This book is the "how." Read "Atlas Shrugged" for the why.

    5 out of 5 stars A scientist's view.......2000-10-15

As a person who has been a non-corporate scientist for 25 years, I strongly endorse this text. It walks the reader through the many hideously-flawed legal "arguments" that have set the stage for travesties of justice, based on scientific misinformation and distortion through the years. Most of the American public (and the lawyers who toady to it) wants to believe what it believes on the basis of intuition and supposition rather than objective evidence, and Huber shows why this is an altogether-invalid approach. The reviewer who gave this book a one-star rating is a plaintiff's attorney-- I would "make book" on that.

    4 out of 5 stars An Engineer's View.......2000-10-09

A must read for any person involved with the product realization process. The only way to protect you and your company against junk science when you are hauled into court with your product or service is to understand that junk science exists and to be prepared to provide real and concrete data to support the validity of your design, not simply close your eyes to their opinions and say "There is nothing wrong". Several of the companies mentioned in the book were severally damaged by what this books talks about. A number of excellent products have been taken of the market never to come back and more will never see the light of day because of those who have no other desire that to either make money or push their unsubstantiated agendas have been allowed to take advantage of our tort court systems in the USA.

Yes, some not so good products also have been taken off the market but for the wrong reasons. This too keeps other excellent products locked away in the closet.

In our increasingly technological world lack of understanding in science and technology along of this issues by both sides of the junk science debate will only result in more witch-hunts and more tilting at windmills.

To be successful in life one cannot simply allow them selves to be a victim, we must understand the world around us. No matter how good it really is, everything has a cost, everything has a dark side, but even with these costs and risks that do exist we must address the real issues and not simply make someone pay for the downside of life just because they can.

Huber has presented a flawless indictment of so many in the legal profession. I don't recall Shakespeare's exact words, but he wrote something to the effect of "first kill all the lawyers." These fellows have a huge racket and will do anything to silence those who would expose them. The legal system in the country needs a cleansing, and Huber's book is a fine place to get the process started. It needs to be read widely and acted upon.

Whenever religion and science are mentioned together, someone is sure to darkly warn, “Remember what happened to Galileo!” But what did happen to him? Few people actually know the full story. This one hour audio CD will change that. Listen to the talk that rocked the physicists of Los Alamos, the scientific community that developed the first atomic bomb! Discover: * Who led the attacks against Galileo (it wasn’t the Church), * Which men refused to look through his telescope, * Who threw a party to celebrate Galileo’s discoveries, * What happened at the first investigation of Copernicanism, * Why a second trial was convened twenty years later, * Why agnostic Thomas Huxley said: “The Church was right.” An unblinking look at the truth, this talk is based on Santinilla’s investigation of Galileo’s work. Discover exactly what happened, who really opposed Galileo and what transpired at both of his Inquisitional trials. Don't forget to get a copy of "Harmonizing Religion and Science," the one-hour companion CD! Audio CD - Length approximately 60 minutes.

                    Book Description

"Coming to terms with this reality was a lot like accepting the death of a loved one."

You Don't LOOK Sick!: Living Well with Invisible Chronic Illness chronicles a patient's true-life accounts and her physician's compassionate commentary as they take a journey through the three stages of chronic illness—Getting Sick, Being Sick, and Living Well. This resource helps you focus on building a meaningful life that contains illness as opposed to a life of frustration and fear. Designed for patients in the beginning stages of chronic illness, this book will also be illuminating for caregivers and loved ones.

                    From the book:
"I've learned that having a chronic illness is not a prison sentence. It does not mean I must spend the rest of my life feeling depressed and angry, locked away from the world inside my little sick box. It does not mean that I am useless and no longer have any gifts to share, but it may mean that I must develop some new ones."

You Don't LOOK Sick! addresses practical aspects of chronic illness, such as:

                    - hiring a doctor

                    - managing chronic pain

                    - coping with grief and the loss of function

                    - winning battles with health and disability insurers

                    - countering the social bias against the chronically ill

                    - recognizing the limitations of chronics illness care and charting a path for change

In You Don't LOOK Sick!: Living Well with Invisible Chronic Illness, you will find stories, dialogue, humor, examples, and analogy of the three stages to illustrate a challenging but navigable journey. You will also find suggested reading materials for learning to live well, medical Internet resources, illness-specific Web sites, names and addresses of national associations, and a bibliography of medical books by topic. The short chapters and straightforward language of the book will be helpful for readers who are weary and dispirited.

You don't look sick. Although our stories may vary, this is the one phrase that all of us living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and other invisible chronic illnesses have experienced, dread, and fear the most. It's hard enough to live in pain, fight through fibrofog, and deal with lost independence but this simply utterance makes us feel like we have to explain ourselves and frankly the explanation is never quite good enough. We leave the conversation with a feeling that getting sick was somehow our fault and that we aren't getting better because we aren't trying hard enough. Somehow we are flawed human beings.

You Don't Look Sick! is the experience of one woman (with the help of her doctor). Her story is very familiar. Like most of us, her journey just to get a diagnosis was long and painful. Getting appropriate help and coming to terms with the "Chronic" part of her condition contained even more challenges. Still, the author's illustrates that although it may not be possible to rid ourselves completely of this terror, we can bring ourselves to a place where we live well. A message we could all take heart in.

                    Filled with lore,
                    Filled with recipes.
My God, filled with information I couldn't believe existed!
Do you know what a syllabub is?
I did, we have an original syllabub, one that actually survived the Civil War. This cookbook describes in detail what they were used for, and the greatest of recipes for syllabub-the milk and wine mix.

This book is a history book, listing TRUE History!

How our ancestors ticked, and why you have that inclination to go back to those old traditional ways, because you have it in your genes, you are a descendant of these tough and true-grit individuals that fought and survived the most brutal of wars.

This book will make you proud, you won't be inclined to ever loan it out, because even if you let grandma borrow it, it probably won't be returned.

I forewarned you- don't loan it out!

Keep it, read it, and if tempted, just buy another one to loan, it's worth the price paid. Hurry now, before they read this review and decide to raise the cost! (too bad I couldn't make that smaller print)

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Food Folklore.......2006-08-07

Dabney captures the culinary culture of the Appalachians. Wonderful anecdotes and reminiscing carry the reader along. The Michie Tavern Apple Cobbler recipe is excellent (Almost like dining there again!). There is a factual error relating to Kentucky Burgoo. Dabney writes that this was first introduced to Kentucky by Col. Jaubert in 1810. Jaubert wasn't born until about 1840 according to census records and his grave marker. This error was no fault of the writer, though. Marion Flexner's 'Out of Kentucky Kitchens', which was sourced, also includes this error.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy for the Tummy.......2004-06-16

Rose Houk went back to the Appalachian roots for these recipes.

Opossum, "take one opossum and slow cook him to get the fat out." Then she describes the people's stories how during the winter you might not have much more than a squirrel for meat.

I got a sense of the bravery and strength of character of the mountain people when they grew their own food during hard times and good times. Their meals reminded me of a simpler time when large families worked their land and survived together.

Besides all that, her story telling made me laugh.

                    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-01-10

All I can say is this book is AWESOME. You must get it. I have never seen such quality, and old time cooking, and history wrapped up in one cookbook like this. I wish there were more books like this one. If we don't write down the knowledge these people had, and how they survived, and lived...we are making a tragic mistake. I cannot wait to start making some of the food listed from their recipes! I just saw this book last night at a bookstore in town. Don't hesitate to get this book, you won't be sorry.

                    3 out of 5 stars Folksy shouldn't be dumb.......2003-12-27

The author of this folksy, breezy book is obviously in love with his subject. Unfortunately, he sometimes does not seem to know what he's writing about. On page 189 with a photo of hams hanging hock up, he quotes a mountain sage who says hams should be 'hung with the hocks down', but apparently does not notice the discrepancy. Five pages later he gives his 'modern update' to a traditional recipe: boil ham in water in a deep pan (not a pressure cooker) at 300 degrees. Funny, I can't get my boiling water above 212 degrees. Although he has a deep love of the subject, he does not appear to have a deep knowledge. There are many examples of inconsistencies. On page 313 and following, he describes a mountain personage Aggie Ross Lossiah and then on page 327 and following, he describes the same person, but calls her Angie Ross Lossiah. (These are not just typos; at each place he uses the name multiple times.) In the chapter on sorghum syrup, he says 'it is known in the mountains as "long sweetenin'." This is in contrast to "short sweetenin'" -- refined sugar.' Then in the chapter on honey, he says 'honey was considered the much-loved mountain "long sweetening" while sorghum was "short sweetening".'

The main purpose of the recipes in the book seem for entertainment. Many are cute, but most are either trivial and obvious, or else carelessly presented; for example, a recipe for blackberry dumplings calls for four ingredients: 1 qt blackberries, 1 1/4 c sugar, 2 c water, and "Berry mix". I have not figured out where to get the "Berry mix" (is that a commercial product?) or when to add it -- it was not mentioned in the directions. Also, there's that problem of boiling water at 300 degrees. Nevertheless, I found the book enjoyable and evocative of my own experiences in and with the people of the Southern Appalachians.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Resource.......2005-04-12

Tom Nettles has done the church a marvelous service in collecting, republishing, and providing historical introductions to six of the most significant Baptist catechisms. Christians who want to know and understand the doctrinal tenets central to Baptist identity must obtain this book. The general introduction and the historical introductions to each of the separate catechisms demonstrate that Baptists have always been unanimously and vitally concerned with orthodoxy and orthopraxy, with theology and doxology. Dr. Nettles manifests scholarly insight and acumen as a historian and he writes with a penetrating and lucid style that makes the book most enjoyable to read.

4 out of 5 stars All Baptists should read this book!.......2000-01-31

If you've ever been frustrated when told that Baptists have historically resisted creeds and confessions you will be encouraged by reading this book. Though the focus of the book strictly speaking is on the use of catechisms and not creeds and confessions, it's hard to separate one from the other.

After reading the introduction alone, you will see that Baptists have benefitted greatly from the use of catechisms. The collection of catechisms included in the book will prove helpful for an individual to nail down his own theology or pass it along to his children.

Perhaps a future book by Nettles will go into more depth concerning the differences between Baptist catechisms and those of other denominations.

May the Lord use this book to awaken 21st century Baptists to their catechetical roots!

When I purchase this cup, I though it was going to be more like a game but let me tell you so far it's been very good and clear on the messages; I actually can say that regarding the subjects I made the questions the explanations where accurate. I know also, that the more you practice the more your intuition will develops but for a beginner this is a great start and I see myself reading the cup soon without the book because the system is easy and quick to learn. It will help if every day your morning coffee you use your cup and in no time you will be having fun with friends reading their future.

I didn't buy this for "serious" psychic reading... but thought it would be fun to have while enjoying the Harry Potter books. It's a hit with my neices who are 13 and 15 and complete Potter fans. So, it just gets us a little closer to the wizarding world!

A Japanese tea master discusses his art, and throws in a few anecdotes of his own life and stories about famous tea masters from the past. Overall, this is a wonderful introduction to the spirit behind the tea ceremony, which as just as important as the particulars of the process itself. The author's warmth and sincere goodwill come through nicely in this slim, peaceful volume.

Breathtaking photos illustrate the beautiful mystery of Zen, while meditation instructions show how to sit and breathe so you can think with koans--spiritual paradoxes that create new ways to understand yourself and others. Then explore these energy sources: the way of the samurai as expressed in Aikido, Judo, Kendo, and Kyodo; language power with calligraphy and haiku; sacred spaces of rock gardens and flower arranging; and tea ceremonies that free your senses to awaken your spirit.
