This is the story of a boy abandoned in 1926 at the age of four in industrial Paterson, New Jersey, and subsequently raised by a warm extended Irish Catholic family during the Great Depression. We meet the people-many of them characters in their own right-who influenced Doug's early life including the nuns of St. Joe's School. Winning a pre-war appointment to West Point, he graduates with the D-Day Class of 1944 and serves in the European War as an artillery lieutenant in one of Patton's divisions. Here we meet the men of the GI Generation with whom he fought the war and served in the early occupation of Germany. The story ends in the summer of 1947 as the Cold War gets underway.

The life of the greatest abstract thinker of all times........2003-04-10

Every one has heard of Isaac Newton. His laws of motion, how an apple fell on his head to help him understand gravity, etc. Those who go on to college to study science or engineering hear more of his work in optics, calculus, and a myriad other fields. When you understand how his work is at the very foundations of modern science, you begin to appreciate his genius.

This book by Gale E. Christianson is based on about 4 millions words (approximately 8000 pages on a standard 8 inches by 11.5 inches paper) written by Newton himself. The author succeeds in presenting everything that is known about Newton in less than 600 pages. Throughout the book, considerable amount of time is spent in outlining the external environment (political, religious, social and scientific) in England to help the reader understand Newton's life better.

The book starts off with Newton's ancestry and his own very difficult birth (prematurely born). His life is traced all the way to his education at Trinity College (University of Cambridge) and beyond as a Professor of Mathematics. The controversy regarding who is the originator of Calculus (Leibniz being the contender) is addressed in great detail. Everything you may want to learn about the origins of 'Principia Mathematica' is also covered in this book. Of course, there is no substitute for reading a copy of the original 'Principia Mathematica' itself if you are interested in exactly what it comprised.

I have yet to finish reading the entire book and it has been about 10 years since I purchased my copy. I skipped a few chapters when I first read the book and I have never been able to find the time to go back and fill in the blanks. The 600 pages are quite daunting to read yet thoroughly enjoyable if you can relate to his life in any way. Even otherwise, the life of one of the greatest abstract thinkers of all times is absolutely fascinating. What makes the book difficult to read is not the complex mathematics or physics (there is none of that in this book) but the pages and pages devoted to painting a picture of life in England at that time. There is so much information that you also need to find British History interesting in order to appreciate the entire book.

If you are deeply interested in Physics or Mathematics, you will enjoy this book thoroughly. Otherwise, it will make a good addition to your biography collection. The effort that the author spent on putting this book together is absolutely monumental. I plan on keeping this as part of my library collection and someday pass it on to my progeny. I hope you find it as enjoyable a book to read as I did.

By the method of fluxions..........2002-10-04

Although not very detailed on the scientific aspects of Newton's work, this biography places him very well in his historic period, where we find a tadpole spectacle-between two worlds--of an age in transition, and the arch-innovator, shaking the foundations. That said, and the tale makes it clear, Newton was still very much a man of another age, if not another world, and we can also forget his discretion towards what he had achieved, never mistaking it for a complete metaphysical system. The theologian competes with the tinkerer turned blazingly sharp intuiter of the method of fluxions. The issue is important because the monumental genius of his deed tends to induce imitation in the sciences to come, but this never suceeds, for a reason Newton might have found obvious as he expended a majority of his labors poring over theological and alchemical treatises. I shan't further, as is my wont, crack jokes about 'mad scientists'. Newton was the real McCoy, and so much more compellingly fascinating than the caricature. We might learn his system of the world, but never grasp the 'system' of his mind, where sanity and madness integrate as a mystery. The depiction in the book of the world of Newton's England, Cambridge, and in the period of a classic political passage, leaves only wonder at the pinnacle of accomplishment starting from such rough-scrabble beginnings.

Faithful, Insightful, Definitive, Delightful!.......2000-06-29

This book breathes life into the very complex figure who is a progenitor of Science, and to an extent, Western civilization as we know them today. From Newton's correspondence and the memoirs of people who knew him, Christianson tells the story of the quiet child who revolutionized theories of light and mechanics, invented calculus (or did he? read!), served brilliantly as Master of the Mint, and presided over the Royal Society while privately holding heretical views and practicing alchemy. I got a great sense of the interrelatedness of the works of Newton and his contemporaries such that he seems neither untouchable and divine nor merely "in the right place at the right time", fashionable traps for biography. His interaction with many other contemporaries, such as Halley, Leibniz, and (Johann) Bernoulli were a reality check for my notions of genteel integrity among the lights of the age.

This is the first work of history and biography I've read in a long time. I'm now inspired to find more reading of this caliber. If only my formal education in history could have been this engaging!

The book gave very good tips on where to find different activities to do while pregnant. It also includes help for those who haven't worked out before. Not as much help for someone who was very athletic prior to becoming pregnant. It is really for those who have no or limited knowledge of working out.

I really enjoyed this book!

It covers every area you could need to start an exercise program for yourself during your pregnancy. Whether you are just getting started or already have been exercising it covers a wide variety of information. The book does a very good job of motivating you to have an overall healthy lifestyle along with your pregnancy.

It is written in an easy to read format, even it you have limited time, with many helpful tips.

As a mother of three I realize how easy it is to sacrifice every minute for your family. But if you can find a time for yourself to exercise it is amazing how you will have more energy and be a happier mom for your kids!! This book definately will help you find a way to fit it into your lifestyle.

Easy to navigate cookbook!.......2007-09-03

The Cruising K.I.S.S. Cookbook by Corinne C. Kanter was the one of the best cookbook purchases I have done. I love cooking and I have collected more than a dozen cookbooks from various authors. Most of those cookbooks have colorful pictures of the finished dish, which for some reason entices me to try them in my kitchen. When I came across the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple system) cookbook, I was a little hesitant to buy it, because it has no pictures of the dishes, but when I opened it and browsed through the book, I know for sure that this is the COOKBOOK I want! It has all the information I need in order to fully understand the science of cooking. The first few pages enumerate temperature conversions, baking pans capacities, pan sizes and ingredient measurement conversions. The last pages have metric conversion tables and liquid measure conversions. These were the first things that convinced me to buy it! My other cookbooks do not have those and I have always found it annoying when I have to figure out how to convert ounces to grams when the recipe calls for ounces and the ingredient I bought has grams on the packaging! This book does everything for the busy and conversion-challenged cook like me. Another plus factor: this small, spiral-bound cookbook has sections for terms used in cookery and cooking methods. It makes it easier for anyone to understand what the words deglaze, blintz, and coddle mean! There's no more need to find a dictionary, everything is there for the starter cook or busy housewife learning to prepare a simple gourmet meal for her family.

This book was originally intended for people who cook while at sea in their small galleys. The ingredients are easy to find and store. I remember my scouting days when we were expected to keep everything simple and make do with whatever things or ingredients we had on hand. For the cheese lovers, there is a cheese chart with the names of different cheeses from all over the world, with their corresponding description. This is very helpful for someone like myself who gets intimidated when faced with a wide variety of cheeses in a store. Since I have a penchant for wine and cheese, this section comes really handy. There is an assortment of recipes from desserts, breads, cakes, soups, sandwiches, vegetables, grains, pasta, legumes, meats, fish, etc. The cooking procedures are so simple that my 11-year old daughter can actually follow them. Her favorites are the recipes for Cheese Biscuits and the Morning Rice Pudding.

I highly recommend this book for everyone who loves easy recipes to follow. This book is for the young college student, the new wife or the busy mom, the single guy who is tired of pizza and Chinese take-out! You do not need a sailboat or a yacht to enjoy the recipes in this cookbook. All you need is a hungry stomach!

a good simple introduction book.......2005-07-25

This is a good simple introduction book about chinchillas and their needs; simple & easy enough for older children & adults. I think it is necessary to follow thru with a more detailed book if a person is considering getting a chinchilla or need to care for a chinchilla, but this book will give you the basics to decide if you want one. I keep my copy near my chinchilla in case I'm not around and someone wants to know a little about my Lullaby.

I love this book! I originally checked this book out from our local library and loved it so much that I had to have it for my own! =o) I don't even HAVE a hamster but I got this book due to the cute photos. The text isn't as lengthy as other books about hamsters but it does have a lot of general information that is very informative and interesting especially for a first-time hamster adopter. :o) I don't think anyone would regret owning this book.

For goldwork and crewel embroidery, the designs are too small so would need to be enlarged first. So for me the iron-on transfer idea won't be useful. Nice butterflies and flowers though.

Psoriasis is an unpleasant, disfiguring disease, whose sufferers often hide away from life or are pushed away. Its cause is unknown, and there is no cure. It can affect people of all ages, and sufferers can die from the disease or the complications of treatment. Cram has long dealt with psoriasis patients and understands current knowledge of it and how patients and others react to it.

Stress doesn't cause it, yet reducing stress often can help in managing it, and psychological scars are usually the main problem associated with it. Cram speaks wisely about those matters, drawing on stores of his patients to show how such scars may affect all aspects of life and how they can be handled effectively.

Many HMOs will not pay for adequate care, so Cram's advice on finding a doctor is important. In addition, he describes various treatment methods, speaking especially well of psoriasis day-care centers. Self-acceptance is the major goal, he says. -William Beatty--Booklist, Sept. 15, 2000

Although Alex Colville is by no means an abstractionist, his art tends to be so technically perfect and aesthetically distanced that it strikes the poet as leaving as much room for the viewer's imagination as does that of the abstract painter. That is why Ledwell is so grateful to Colville's art for inspiring, challenging, and freeing up his participating poetic imagination, thus enabling this collection.

The Tokyo Rose Case, a Cautionary Note for Today.......2002-03-22

Six months ago I was traveling along the coast of Washington, when I woke up to the terrible TV scenes of fire and death and collapsing buildings. I wrote my first thoughts in my diary: "As events unfold, I worry of our response. Will internal security become Gestapo like? Will we isolate ourselves? What about our civil rights or the rights of dark guys with beards and robes?" To know what could happen, we only needed to look back to the internment of Japanese-Americans or the case of "Tokyo Rose" (Iva Toguri).

If you are interested in World War II history or the excesses of patriotism, this is a book you should read and keep in your library. Mr. Howe has done a through job gathering the events and as a bonus describes the world of living in an enemy's country. I also value the picture Howe paints of life as a POW in Japan. It's nice that he has humanized some of the Japanese military, even to the point of letting us see that there were good and bad on both sides. Consider, for example, the support Iva received from the fighting GI's and compare it to the pettiness of the (mostly) non-combatant government agents.

Howe's writing style could have been more readable and there were a few errors of fact. (p. 244 Doolittle's first raid was in 1942 and not two years later.) These did not detract excessively.

Our challenge today as Americans is to avoid another case of "Tokyo Rose".

A GOOD HISTORICAL ACCOUNT, BUT LACKS EXCITEMENT.......1998-10-17

I had expected that the author would reveal a lot of what Tokyo Rose actually broadcast and, especially, the effect it had or was expected to have on our troops in the Pacific War. Plus, obviously, some followup on how she was eventually arrested in the U.S., etc. This text is a very good historical and legal account about Tokyo Rose (the one chosen for this book), her biography, her time in Japan, how she got involved, how she was arrested in the U.S. and so on, but the narrative is so detailed that it becomes boring and tends to lose the general reader's interest. On the other hand, if you are interested in Tokyo Rose's life and personal problems, and demand a lot of very detailed and specific biographical and prosecutorial information, this is the book for you. Sorry, not what I was looking for...
