Poignant first-person story of young aircrewman in WWII.......1998-05-12
Going Back is more than just another memoir of the Pacific War. First of all, this is the story not of a flag officer or pilot but rather of an enlisted aircrewman. This alone makes it somewhat unique. Secondly, this is not simply a collection of anecdotes and "war stories." Rather, this is the poignant story of the author's journey through the war from his blue-collar neighborhood in Philadelphia to the farthest reaches of the vast Pacific and back. It also chronicles his transition from adolescence to manhood. At each stage of these dual journeys we are treated to evocative word pictures of his experiences and feelings. He has an uncommon talent for conveying the gestalt of a situation-the smells and sounds of a Liberator bomber in flight, the enervating feeling of the steaming and fetid jungle, the dark loneliness of a remote hospital ward. Going Back is a far deeper book than one would expect. This is truly a case of not judging a book by its cover. As we accompany the author on his journey, we are treated to his vivid recollections of life as an aircrewman with its adventures, dangers, hardships, and camaraderie. We are treated in even greater measure to his remarkable perception and introspection. With easy language and painful honesty, he tells us a compelling tale, one well worth the reading.
Vividly Recalls Boot Camp and Radio School Training.......1998-04-13
This book brought back poignant memories of the reader's World War II experiences which related in many incidences to those of the author. Well done.
Book Description
1894. Probably the most comprehensive book about Tesla's work and fully illustrated!
Customer Reviews:
Earthly dull.......2002-07-14
As opposed to the unearthly stuff most people who would be searching for Tesla books are actually interested in. If you want to wind coils for old-fashioned electric motors, alternators and inductors, this is the book for you! Unfortunately for those interested in extraterrestrial influences and transmitting electrical power through the ether, this book represents the real science and inventions that made Tesla a true success in his day, as opposed to the kookier speculations that later fertilized his legend. Because it dispells myths, I have given it three stars for performing a real service. But unless your are deeply interested in the history of alternating current, you don't have to spend [money] for a paperweight.
Before the cult --.......2002-02-01
When I was young I planned to write something along the lines of "an evaluation of Tesla's scientific contributions." Three things stopped me: 1) procrastination, 2) laziness, and 3) the impression that everyone who writes about Tesla will have a "kook" label stick to them for the rest of their lives. Why this is so is interesting, but first about the book.
This is a reprint of one published a little more than a hundred years ago, and is most definitely not a "kook book." The author, Mr. Martin, writes a very good description of the nature and significance of Tesla's work up to about 1895. The second part of the book consists of reprints of lectures delivered by Tesla, apparently written by the great man himself. The book contains many good diagrams and illustrations.
Both parts have the expected "old-fashioned" feel, but the book gives us a chance to compare Tesla's writing style with that of a contemporary. My own impression is that Tesla's writing style is fairly good as well as interesting, though perhaps even more florid than customary during that age. The book is rather long, and I would venture only two types are likely to read it in entirety: 1) historians of science, and 2) the Tesla sycophants.
When the book was originally published Tesla was at the height of his powers. About that time his assertions started to become more and more grandiose, if not fantastic. Following the debacle of his "world wireless power transmission" scheme (just prior to WWI), his reputation suffered. Although he lived until 1941, in later life he tended to be increasingly seen as an eccentric loner and kook. He died in loneliness and poverty.
OK, so why does a "kook" label tend stick to anyone who has more than passing interest in Tesla? The first reason is, of course, the fantastic and eccentric claims Tesla made late in life. But by itself this is not enough - after all, even the great Newton dabbled in alchemy and the Book of Revelations late in life. To the first reason must be added a second: a "conspiracy" cult has grown around Tesla; cultists explain all his failing not as personal failings, but as due to a conspiracy against the man. In short, Tesla has been turned into a messianic figure, and scientists are not comfortable with this image.
Reprint of late 1800s book - intense reading, poor transfer.......2001-12-07
I've read a borrowed copy of this; seeing that Amazon had it, I bought my own copy - I could see that digesting this material is going to take a while.
The text is all here, unabridged. The image quality of the illustrations leaves a lot to be desired with this edition, however. It looks like a second-generation xerox in spots. If this is a problem, do yourself a favor and look for the 1980's hardcover reprint. The images are much better in that one. That said, the substance of this book is thoroughly recommended for the serious student of electrical engineering as well as fans of Tesla.
Since this text was written in the late 1800s, and is reprinted here without alteration, the language can sometimes have the density of Shakespeare (without the poetry). Much of the phraseology has passed out of use in the last hundred years. This material is written for the intelligencia of Tesla's era, and not "dumbed down" for this age as many other books are. This is an advantage for someone who wants an authoratative viewpoint on this subject (who more authoratative than Tesla!), but poisonous to the casual reader.
Many of the inventions discussed in this book are now commonplace (for instance - the AC induction motor, fully described here, is in use everywhere). Nikola's own depth of understanding of the principles involved make this a thoroughly intense experience for those who are ready for it. Readers who can understand this material are going to experience the devine "Ah-ha" on a regular basis throughout this book. Others will be put to sleep.
This book will separate the men from the boys very quickly.
Record of a pioneering work.......2001-11-04
A volume that records the early pioneering work of an electrical genius and inventor, in the same platform of Thomas Edison and Charles Steinmetz, Guglielmo Marconi and George Westinghouse, though never as well known. It shows in great detail not only the works of Tesla's experiments, but will give the reader a glimpse of the amazing range of his thinking. From alternating curent generators to Unipolar generators (generators being just one field of study) to theories and applications of polyphase currents and motors to high frequency and high potential currents, this gives the reader some basic understanding of his pioneering work.
This is not about his life and times, and how this genius could understand the mysteries of electromagnestism but could not help himself when it comes to battling corporations represented by lawyers of JP Morgan. It may seem outdated, since the work was published in the 1890s. But nowhere can you find a book that will explain more about the foundations of his technical and scientific work.
I thought it was wonderful.......2001-04-21
This book was so interesting. It gave a lot of information!
Product Description
Telsa gave us more than lightning bolt generators. He created the 60 cycle AC electrical system we use today. Tesla also experimented with other frequencies, iron and air core transformers, as well as motors and generators. Tesla's huge coil just didn't appear one day. They were but another step in a series of experiments that had begun years before. Here you get a complete record of his research up to 1893. It's all here -- the AC experiments and inventions that lead Tesla to experiment with ever higher voltages and frequencies, the neon tubes and florescent lights, unusual high frequency alternators and even magnet motors.
Customer Reviews:
This is the real thing.......1999-01-28
This book is the compilation of Lectures given by Tesla in the late 1880's where he explains basically everything he has done so far, including real practical advice on how to build motors, coils, etc. Get it and ask yourself howcome he is rarely mentioned in today's textbooks.

Book Description
Insightful new guides from Drs. Brazelton and Sparrow on two of childhood's greatest challenges
How to react when your toddler bites his playmate or your kindergartner confronts a bully? Drs. Brazelton and Sparrow bring their much-admired insight and support to this crucial, and ever more timely, childrearing challenge. From an early age, babies and toddlers need to assert themselves in a daunting world, yet eventually learn to do this without hurting others. After showing how aggression emerges at each age, Brazelton and Sparrow offer practical, wise advice on anger, fights, self-defense, the fears and nightmares that arise when children become aware of their own and others' aggression, the effects of TV and video games, and of experiencing real life violence. They offer specific, effective ways to help children understand their own aggressive feelings and channel them into healthy self-assertion in schoolwork, games, and sports.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I thought.......2007-08-16
I love Dr. Brazelton and have for years. However, this book was very disappointing. Luckily, I picked it up from my local library before I purchased it on here. It states a lot of facts about the "how and why" children act out, but it is VERY short on solutions. The book is "all over the place" and not logically organized. There are a few places where the same suggestion is repeated numerous times. My suggestion is to pick it up from the library...it's a quick read...and see if it helps your situation. I can say that the section on biting seemed extremely informative, but that was not an issue with my child.
A Must Have.......2007-07-17
I have many of "The Brazelton Way" books. I love them all and now give them as baby shower gifts. This one has really given us insight into our 5 year olds recent outbursts and we now have the tools to enable us to give him the loving guidance he needs to work through this stage and master self control.

this is an ok book. some interesting recipes but nothing sensational and a little short on maximizing the effectiveness of your blender.
Great book for blender enthusiasts!.......2006-12-31
We just got this book recently, and it is very easy to use with lots of recipes. One of the great things about it is that it gives you the calories, carbs and protein for each item, which is really helpful for me. There are soups, smoothies, sauces, etc.
The best blender book ever!!!.......2004-07-26
I just bought this book recently and the recipes are easy to make and DELICIOUS! It has the best frappe's and smoothies recipes i've ever tasted. This one's for the true dog lover in you!.......2000-07-28
As soon as I flipped through the first couple of pages, I had to have it! This book really shows the love these great animals deserve. It's great seeing other spoiling their 'kids' like my husband and I do. If you love your pal/buddy/baby, you gotta get it!
A must have for every dog lover!!!.......2000-07-10
This is one of those where actions speak louder than words with the many pictures in this book. It's great to know there are those who love their dogs as much as my husband and I do. This book will make you laugh - you gotta have it!

No matter which of these fits you, you'll find Smart Soapmaking practical, helpful, and refreshing. Written by a former professional soapmaker, this book explodes the myths about soapmaking and shows you how to make luxurious soap with the least fuss and bother.
Customer Reviews:
Great Soap Book!.......2007-09-25
I purchased three books on soapmaking, and in my opinion, this one is by far the very best! The author's instructions are clear, concise, and the techniques are simplified and de-mystified over other soapmaking books. I made my first batch of "Anne's Shea Butter Supreme" today, and the soap turned out beautifully without a glitch. I also had a newbie question about a product I purchased, so I emailed the author. Anne responded back quickly and was very helpful, a fact that I greatly appreciated! I can't wait to use my soap and make more of the recipes from the book.
I LOVE This Book!.......2007-08-14
Anne makes soapmaking simple -- I'm a newbie and I'm still learning. This book gives just enough information to educate, without overwhelming. She challenges the "soap theology" of most of the other books, but it makes sense.
I highly recommend it!
disappointed.......2007-07-14
After reading all the great reviews I was expecting a lot more than this. The first disappointment was how thin the book was - just over a hundred pages. Then it's all questions and answers (the ones the author thinks are important) and a couple of recipes which aren't very great either. I don't recommend this book for beginners, it won't tell you how to make soap. And it's definitely not a book for experienced soapmakers who, like I, have been making soap for years. You won't find anything new in there.
I guess this book would be for the in-between soapmakers. You've made a couple of batches and have a few questions. Though, personally, I think you'd find those answers in most good soapmaking books.
Not worth the money.
Great things come in small packages!.......2007-07-09
This book has everything you need to start making soap. The instructions and illustrations for the cold-process of soap making are easy to follow, the recipes are simple and produce great soap every time. Anne's Shea Butter Soap is a very versatile recipe, and her references to other sources are invaluable. Would love to see the author produce a volume of soap recipes!
smart soaping.......2007-05-07
You can't go wrong with this book. If you get anybook on soaping this is the one you need.

Making your own fragrant, softly tinted soaps--as well as bath salts, massage oils, and facial scrubs--is not only much less costly than buying them ready-made, it's also remarkably easy with the recipes in this book. The secret behind these simple but satisfying hand-milled soaps is to begin with purchased bars of plain white soap, rather than cooking up your own soap base from scratch. (This is not cheating, the author points out, but more like how you can consider soup homemade even if you didn't make the stock yourself.) The basic process is extremely straightforward; adding various oils, fragrances, colorants, and botanicals yields dozens of interesting variations. Also appealing are the extensive ideas for labeling and packaging your products and combining them in themed gift presentations. But you may have a hard time giving some of these away, since you'll be tempted to draw a relaxing bath and enjoy them yourself. --Amy Handy
Book Description
“Soap is...one of the better crafts to consider as gifts...supplies directions for more than 20 different kinds of hand-milled soap, an easier process than starting from lye...instructions extend to bath oils and salts and to packaging, labeling, and creating a munificence of fragrance. Step-by-step descriptions are boldly illustrated with color photographs. Who could resist all-natural camomile oatmeal soap or effervescent all-natural champagne bubble bath?”—Booklist.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulously Natural Soapmaking.......2007-09-19
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer about this book. I totally agree that it is definitely not a book for Soapmakers who use Hot or Cold Process Soapmaking like I orginally wanted, but it was certainly very helpfull. Her tips for making Hand-Milled Soap from store-bought soap was excellent. I currently live in the Caribbean where you can't find anything quite easy. I found a Hypo-Allergenic Soap Bar called Pure & Natural that was perfect. Matter of fact, I made one of her recipes yesterday using a PVC Mold, and it came out beautifully. As far as using Petroleum Jelly to release the Soap from the mold, it worked like a charm, just like she indicated in her book.
There are alot of recipes in this book that can be used in regular soapmaking. I also love the idea that the book also has recipes and teaches you how to make Bath & Massage Oils, Solid Massage Oils, Bath Salts & Fizzies, as well as packaging and decorating your handmade items.
Thumbs up for Marie.
Not for experienced soap makers.......2006-11-17
People who really make soap - and contrary to what others have said, it is far from an arduous or time consuming process, should do themselves a favor and pass on this book. Natural soapmaking means using lye and oils, not breaking down someone else's soap and reconstituting it.
Waste of money.
Great Reference for Beginners!.......2004-08-27
Even though this book is entitled "Natural Soapmaking" it really refers using items such as herbs, etc in your soaps and not to the cold process you would doing when making soaps with lye (which can take a month to cure). These are easy receipes for someone just starting out and want to learn creative ways make soaps which gives you immediate results. It gives good instructions and information about aromatherapy, what different colors mean and what certain herbs to enhance your soaps. Although, she recommends putting Vaseline in the molds to assist with the releasing of the mold - you really do not need to do that! As long as you wait for the soap to harden completely that step is unnecessary! And for the cold process/lye makers you may want to pass on this one because you may be disappointed! It is a great addition to your Melt and Pour Soapmaking by the same author!
Great for beginners!!!.......2002-10-26
I absolutely loved this book. I've looked at many soapmaking books and this was the easiest to understand. I made soaps for my friends for Christmas last year. I didn't have to have a degree in chemistry to make my own soap!!!
Great Book for the Experienced Soap Maker.......2002-10-02
This book is great for people that already make their own soap. She has wonderful recipes for hand-milled soap, bath salts, bath oils and massage oils. There are also some very descriptive and beautiful packaging ideas. If you do make your own soap, make a batch of unscented cold processed soap and grate it - then this book will really be helpful to you. Unscented vegetable soap is sometimes difficult to find.

Our Pummeled Kids.......2006-05-30
Our world is ravaged by conflict and our kids are bombarded with stress. Parents are completely frazzled. Dr. Franzini's book is a wonderful antidote to all the stress because it addresses those quiet, marvelous moments we all share with the children in our lives--moments when you catch your breath and think, wow, surely there is hope for this tattered world after all. Humor serves as our deep connection to each other and if we can instill the ability to appreciate humor in our kids, we certainly must. This book will help everyone!
Humor - A Learned Behavior.......2002-07-21
This book has information anybody can use. Even if your children are grown or you've retired from teaching. You probably have nephews, nieces, grand kids or neighbor kids.
Incidentally, it's never too late to learn.
This is an interesting, easy to read, informative book. Positive and full of good ideas. It dispels for once and for all the myth that some of us are born with a sense of humor and some are not. The author shows that this is not true. Everybody, especially kids, can learn to develop, and use, their sense of humor. Great examples and practices as well as interesting websites are chronicled. Exceptional children are also taken into consideration. As the author says, "exceptional kids like to laugh too." Don't we all.
Finally.......2002-05-01
Finally a parenting book that deals with teaching children a skill that will be all-important in any future relationship. It also teaches how to discourage inappropriate humor in a positive manner.
This book would be a wonderful guideline for teachers who want to incorporate humor in the classroom. And as teachers are role models for children this is an excellent place to develop this skill.
Kids Who Laugh is written in an easy and witty style and it is apparent that Dr. Franzini has an excellent sense of humor himself.
I would recommend this book to every parent who thinks that laughter in life is important.
Very Worthwhile.......2002-04-18
Kids Who Laugh is a very informative, enjoyable and worthwhile book. I believe that one of the most important gifts I can give to my children is the gift of a sense of humor. Dr. Franzini, with his insightful text and helpful techniques, helps a parent achieve this goal. Dr. Franzini makes a convincing argument that a sense of humor is a learned trait and, after reading this book, I agree. Even if you already have a well developed sense of humor, this book helps you transfer that trait to your children.

Book Description
This is the true story of a great artist, a determined immigrant, and an outstanding teacher. It is the story of self-discipline in the face of abuse, poverty, and bitter discrimination. It is the story of one man's passion for realizing his own artistic potential. It is the story of a starving artist, with a difference. It has a happy ending.
Customer Reviews:
Integrating life in a new country can be difficult.......2002-06-22
Portrait of an Artist is a very relaxed read yet one that stirs emotions as Emil Holzhauer struggles with a new culture and language after his immigration to America. The story depicts life in the times of Robert Henri, George Belows, Arthur Davis and other early 20th century artists. It is a story of romance, courage, and prejudice. As in the case of many immigrants Holzhauer must fine a new life while still remaining very involved with his family and friends in the old world. In his later years Holzhauer becomes a professor in a small southern college. At one point he is outraged by the bigotry he encounters after discovering a very talented young black artist. When he retires from the college he moves to an area in Florida, which he has discovered in his travels. Here he marries for the third time and finds a life of happiness and contentment. He lives next to Audrey Edwards who becomes his very good friend. She is intrigued by stories of his life. After interviews with many more people from his past she writes this charming biography. This is the type of book that makes a long car ride or plane trip pass quickly.

Customer Reviews:
A true hero.......2004-01-23
This is one of those books that makes you wake up everyday and appreciate everything you have, espeically your freedom. Sakakida's inner strength must have been tremendous to stand up to the torture, stress, starvation and disease that he endured. And he still continued to do his duty and send intellegence back to the US forces.
The author presented the material in a good straight forward manner that included other sources to back up and bring context to Sakakida's story. Especially interesting was the subtle nuances of Japanese culture and tradition that brought out how complex their social interaction is. Also that in every nationality there are good soldiers and bad soldiers and kindness and respect can be found even in the worst of circumstances.
I highly recommend this book, a very good read.
Breathtaking, but true.......2000-03-19
A vivid tale of horrifying torture told by a man who experienced it all. Richard Sakakida was a true hero. For those who love books on survival, war, adventure, or the American spirit.
