Book Description
It is surprising that with the passing of more than fifty years there are any firsthand accounts left of World War II that are worth the telling, but there is no question David Sutherland's is. His extraordinary experiences with three British special operations agencies rank high as true adventure stories. Much of the action deals with his participation in Special Boat Service operations with Greek resistance fighters in the Aegean Sea, raiding airfields on the German-held islands. Sutherland details his profound and lasting admiration for the Greek resistance fighters, whose support risked not just their lives but those of their families and entire villages. His postwar service with Britain's foreign intelligence service, MI5, covered twenty-five years of the Cold War, the highlights of which are chronicled here.
A prime player in wartime special warfare, Sutherland offers a thrilling story that adds significantly to the historical record.

"He Who Dares" - WHO CARES!.......2002-01-05
Do not waste your money, and more importantly, your TIME in reading this dottering, rambling, hazy memoir of someone who sorta, kinda, maybe was there.
The book had the potential to shed some light on the origins of the British Special Boat Squardors in WWII. It appears the author was there for some involvement,(ok, he commanded the Squadron), but he never goes into any real detail as to what he did. It is all the rather vague recollections of someone who, 60 years after the fact, takes pencil to paper and writes in longhand what he remembers (the author's admission). What he remembers is mostly who in his regiment came from what upper class family and where they were from in England, and what house in Eton they attended, and many, many times what he had for lunch.
What is missing is volume and substance. Where is the operational detail? What were the planning factors for SBS missions? What was done to harden the men after errors in trainng were found in combat? There were some great operators in the SBS and SAS. Other than Anders Lassen, the rest are rarely mentioned and then only with a cursory listing of their nicknames. The author's nickname was "Dinkey," probably for his writing abilty. For example, why use a slew of acrynoms without explaining them?
Bottom line - forget this book. It could have been fascinating, but it is merely ponderous and vapid. For "He Who Dares" - WHO CARES!

Conflict in the Cosmos: Fred Hoyle's Life in Science
ASIN: 093570227X |
Book Description
One of this century's most eminent scientist offers a revealing and charming account of his life and work. Mathematician, physicist, astronomer, cosmologist and originator of the term the 'Big Bang'-Sir Fred has always been ready and able to challenge established thinking.

"Moving sideways like a crab".......2002-09-14
This is an often-fascinating glimpse into the life of the incomparable Sir Fred Hoyle, astronomer, cosmologist, panspermicist, sci-fi afficionado, stellar nucleosynthesist and generally mathematician/scientist extraordinaire. I knew of Hoyle's work in stellar nucleosynthesis and steady-state cosmology before, but I came to this book intentionally after reading and thoroughly enjoying his sci-fi novels (especially "The Black Cloud" and "A for Andromeda"). Here, we peer into Hoyle's life as a scientist, beginning with his stubborn truancy in grammar school and continuing with his adolescent chemistry experiments, his work for the British goverment in WWII, his involvement in astronomy and cosmology from the 1950's through the 1970's, and ending with his political duels with stodgy representatives of British institutional science and his critique of Big-Bang theory as sheer metaphysic, indicting all the while fundamentalists of all ilk, Big-bangers and Bible-thumpers alike. His stories are often very funny, and those about Paul Dirac and Wolfgang Pauli (with whom he worked at Cambridge) are truly priceless. However, I always find his prose a bit stilted, and slogging one's way through Hoylistc grammar and obscure British slang can make for some slow, hard reading. Worst of all, several aspects of Hoyle's most interesting and controversial scientific work is completely absent, for example, panspermia (nothing to speak of) and evolutionary genetics (1-2 paragraphs). And despite both the cover photograph and the fact that Hoyle wrote a well-received book on Stonehenge as an ancient observatory, there is not one word about Stonehenge here. What a pity. On the other hand, he does immerse us in his deep distrust of politics and politicians, and even give's us a taste of his surprisingly Vedanta-like spiritual attitude and a kind of Pythagorean wonder at the Universe. The quote in my title is from Hoyle's self-described scientific activity as crab-like, inching foward cautiously over a lifetime. All told, it is a fascinating life-story told by one of the 20th century's greatest scientific iconoclasts.
Science and wisdom in a book to be read and reread.......1998-07-22
Of all the stories and anecdotes I use to tell to my friends, many, surprisingly many, were learnt from this charming and wise book. How to buy a car, when to do it, etc., according to the ethics of times harder. Of course Sir Fred is a great astronomer, learned quantum mechanics from Dirac and is as much famous as a science-fiction writer. So, he wrote one of the best books I read in recent years.
Book Description
Emotional abuse exists all around us-in families and work. Stalking the Soul is a call to recognize and understand emotional abuse and, most importantly, overcome it. Sophisticated and accessible, it is vital reading for victims and health professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant and Amazing!.......2007-07-17
Stalking the Soul has given me a new lease on life! The suffering I went through with my emotionally and verbally abusive husband over 25 years of marriage and three kids was so overwhelming that I almost lost myself. I kept forgiving and forgiving, adapting my behaviors to accommodate him, and contracting my own soul until I nearly disappeared. I look back with regrets not about myself, but about staying with him too long. This book gives the reader insights about the patterns of emotional abuse, the psychology behind it, and the way out of allowing oneself to be controlled by it. The book is brilliant and amazing - I can't recommend it enough!
Stalking the Soul.......2007-07-07
Before reading Stalking the Soul, I read two other books on emotional abuse (No Visible Wounds by Miller, and Why Does He Do That? by Bancroft). Each book is a jewel, a long drink of water in a dry parch of land. My favorite part of this book is that it has gifted me with a visceral understanding of what was going on during all those years of so-called "conversations" between abuser and victim. It always boggled my mind how our endless conversations were so convoluted and dishonest - ALWAYS in the best interests of the abuser. The chapter on Conversations ended my confusion. Also, I admire Dr. Marie-France Hirigoyen's courage in making it clear to other therapists that an abuser's victim needs to be counseled in a different way from other clients. My abusive marriage was not diagnosed for over 30 years by various well-intentioned counselors - an abusive relationship that I felt responsible for but could not mend. Instead I was told to "work on yourself!" which I did with great personal results; yet what a relief and how healing and freeing it would have been to have deeply comprehended years ago what I have learned from this book and the other two books - that I was in a losing proposition from the start by trying to make nice with an abuser, and that the first step is to get out NOW while working on our own development so that we will never again accept an abuser into our life. Better late than never thanks to one courageous friend who clued me in by suggesting one of these books. From there, book reviewers led me to additional books. After reading three "abuse books," I am emotionally free from a deeply, deeply damaging relationship, free from what I used to call codependency (and what he called "weakness"). Thank you to the authors, to my two interactive reviewers, and to my courageous friend for lending me your insights and for supporting me with your strength along my path into freedom.
An invaluable book.......2007-03-27
The other reviewers of this book have said it all. This book deserves ten stars. It is written with clarity and understanding. Stalking the Soul is not a pleasant read, and many will find it says great truths that some may not even want to hear. Emotional and psychological abuse is insidious, frightful and invasive.
I moderate a support group for abused people and I never tire of recommending this book to the members.
a different perspective.......2007-02-04
Liked the way this book was organized from abuse in couples, to the workplace, to the family. Gets inside the mind of the victim to show how insidious emotional manipulation and abuse is, and how even otherwise strong-minded women can fall prey to these sort of emotional vampires. Not so solution oriented, but when you think it's YOU who has gone crazy, this is a great wake up call to recognize what is really happening and may prompt people to get the help they need, which starts with getting OUT. There is no curing these people.
Amazing.......2006-12-07
Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. In fact, everyone I handed it to had the same reaction, and even a close friend's therapist in Chicago ended up using it for a conference presentation when she introduced my copy to him.
The fact is, if you are a relatively strong woman, an educated woman, a fairly independant woman, a powerful woman, a woman who knows what she wants or any combination of these; then you NEED to read this book. It presents the facts of the matter, which is that when it comes to men, all women are vulnerable to abuse on some level, even the strongest and most independantly minded among us. It seems almost impossible to many of us, I am sure, since that was how I always viewed it. However, after a marriage that almost broke me, I realized I had allowed myself to become victim to something that was extraordinarily twisted. There was always a rational explanation for what had occurred, and it could always be viewed as my not taking full responsibility or control, when in fact, the only thing actually going on was the slow tearing down and deconstruction of my independace and my soul. This book addressed that very thing, the situation I could never give a name to, or put a label on. The reason why I always wished my ex-husband would just hit me in order to have some proof of the abuse that I could never point an actual finger at. It freed me from the never ending cycle of psycholgical abuse I had found myself trapped in, and it freed me from the destruction of self that was slowly occurring.
Again, I cannot urge women enough to read this book. While it may not be immediate pertinent to everyone, I believe that all of us have encountered this pattern before. While many of us may have side-stepped it, it's better to be aware than not, particularly since this is the kind of abuse that only an intelligent and articulate woman, aware of her rights as a human being, could find herself in.

Common Knowledge to all Cat People.......2004-03-29
I was hoping to figure out how to solve the issue of the new kitten vs. grouchy old cat so we could all live in harmony. This book didn't shed any light on the topic. The author claims to be a Cat Psychologist but quite frankly, I think anyone with a cat can do the same. She's against putting cats on leashes and all for letting them roam free. She constantly whines about a cat's bad behaviour and how people then put their cat to sleep. I can't say that I've heard of that happening too often. She does cover a few topics such as travelling with a cat, moving, stress and should you own a cat. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

The best knitting book I own.......2007-03-20
Barbara Walker is amazing and her book has been an endless source of inspiration. Anyone interested in designing their own patterns will love this book.
Excellent! .......2007-02-22
This book is an excellent source of beautiful knitting patterns, including lace, cable and patterns. The black and white photo's of the stitches are so sharp and detailed, the designs pop off the page. The best part, for me, the charts are very large and so easy to see (without my glasses on!)and very easy to understand what she is telling you to do. She also gives some instructional information as well that is very good. If you buy only one knitting stitch book, this is the one to get!
Charted Knitting Designs.......2005-10-02
This book is excellent. I bought this book at my local library's book sale last year for a dollar. It has the most amazing and unusual patterns in it and well worth the money. This is a must have for any serious knitter. The more challenging the patterns, the more I like the book.
This has a lot of unusual knitting patterns that you typically do not see in recently published knitting books. There are 350 different stitches, many of which Barbara G. Walker devised herself.
Chapter 1: Textured Fabrics
Chapter 2: Twist Stitch Patterns
Chapter 3: Cables
Chapter 4: Closed-Ring Designs in Cabling (very unusual stitches)
Chapter 5: Cable-Stitch Patterns
Chapter 6: Lace
Chapter 7: Lace Panels
Chapter 8: Mosaic Patterns
Chapter 9: Color Patterns
Chapter 10: Uncharted Miscellany
Chapter 11: Knitting Directions for Illustrated Samples
Charted design + photo of the knitted design.......2004-11-20
Charted knitting Designs is divided into the following sections: textured fabrics, twist stitch pattern, cables, closed ring designs in cabling, cable-stitch patterns, lace panels, mosaic patterns, color patterns, uncharted miscellany and knitting directions for illustrated samples. The last chapter showcases a few simple projects that use patterns found in the book. All other chapter include a photo of the finished knitted texture and a chart (or row by row directions in the non-charted section) of the pattern. This makes visualizing a finished product so much easier and makes it easy to thumb through and look at textures. The photos cover a big enough section of fabric to really get a feel for them.
The patterns show all kinds. My favorite was one called "The Mask" in the uncharted section. It allows you to knit a theater mask into a piece of fabric. You increase and then decrease for the nose, so it sticks out for a 3-D mask.
This book is hardly a must-have (because there are so many knitting books out there), but it is very good for visualizing what a finished product will look like.
Charted patterns are SOMETIMES best.......2004-02-16
I purchased this book thinking it would be similar to the first two Treasuries, but ended up being a bit disappointed. There are plenty of new patterns, of course, but much less than I'd hoped for, and many of them are (in my opinion) unattractive and unusable. Many of the cable patterns fall into this category, and some of the novelty patterns are just weird. The spider is wonderfully life-like, but I just don't know of anyone who wants a big, lifelike, textured spider knitted into their garments.
This was my introduction (and a good one, I believe) to charted patterns. My current obsession is cables, and many (though not all) cabled patterns work VERY well when charted in this way. They make much more sense to me than the written instructions using codes such as FC, FPC, SBC, etc. I've been taking many other cable patterns and charting them on graph paper using the patterns in this book as guidelines.
Bottom line - worth getting, but not nearly as indispensible as the first two.

Straightforward, balanced & full of fascinating information.......2004-02-25
This is a very straightforward, measured approach to the subject of the death and afterlife beliefs of about 20 different major world religions. To understand these views, one must have at least a basic understanding of the religion and thus, each chapter includes background information about the history of the faith and its main beliefs. The way it is organized and presented -- each chapter basically follows the same approach -- makes it easy to get a good comparative understanding of this very complex subject. I especially like the Questions & Answers chapter that asks a guestion (such as "who will be saved?) and then the each author answers the question from the point of view of his or her faith (each chapter is written by a different author, usually a member of the faith about which he or she is writing). I really was able to get a very good understanding of death and afterlife and how different faiths view it. Highly recommend!!
Excellent book! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2003-05-06
I originally had to buy this book for a death & dying course. Now, after the class ended, I refer to it constantly. It presents the information on death & afterlife beliefs of about 20 different religions in a very easy-to-understand, easy-to-grasp manner. Each religions death beliefs is prefaced by a concise background or history, putting the information on death beliefs into context. You don't have to struggle through pages of difficult-to-understand concepts to comprehend why each faith has its beliefs. Anyone interested in the subject should not skip this book. It is a superior resource!
Enjoyable, complete and easy to read resource.......1999-11-02
Drs. Johnson & McGee have provided the perfect avenue for exploring and understanding different views of death and the afterlife. This is a very complete and easy to read resource which I highly recommend.
The best of fair representations of the beliefs of faiths.......1999-09-15
This book is the best of the best in presenting a fair, unbias representation of what different world religions and christian faiths believe about death and the afterlife.

Pictures and Letters tell the "tail".......2002-09-21
I bought this soon after it was offered on Amazon.com, and have enjoyed reading it (and laughing at the pictures) over and over. I wasn't sure if I'd like a "Cat Book," but this one has drama, humor, and fun packed into its pages. Well worth it.
A book that any cat lover would enjoy.......2002-04-22
Rascal Writes Home is an incredibly funny story of the adventures of a Tennessee farm cat whisked away from his little girl and brought to live in Connecticut. Rascal relates his adventures or should I say misadventures to the little girl he left behind which are both hilarious and heart-warming. This book is so chock full of adorable pictures I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. I will definitely be giving this book as a wonderful gift to all of my cat loving friends.
A Fun Read.......2002-04-10
Rascal Writes Home is a treat and a must have for people who love collecting cat books. A humorous tale of a cat born in the south and whisked away to Connecticut and has plenty to say in letters to his former owner. The numerous photos capture the little guy in all sorts of play and mischief. My cats should be so ambitious. This will make a fun gift for cat lovers
