Book Description
This book is the definitive study of the life and works of one of Britain's most important inventors who, due to a cruel set of circumstances, has all but been overlooked by history.
Alan Dower Blumlein led an extraordinary life in which his inventive output rate easily surpassed that of Edison, but whose early death during the darkest days of World War Two led to a shroud of secrecy which has covered his life and achievements ever since.
His 1931 Patent for a Binaural Recording system was so revolutionary that most of his contemporaries regarded it at as more than 20 years ahead of its time. Even years after his death, the full magnitude of its detail had not been fully utilized. Among his 128 Patents are the principle electronic circuits critical to the development of the world's first electronic television system. During his short working life, Blumlein produced patent after patent breaking entirely new ground in electronic and audio engineering.
During the Second World War, Alan Blumlein was deeply engaged in the very secret work of radar development and contributed enormously to the system eventually to become 'H2S'- blind bombing radar. Tragically, during an experimental H2S flight in June 1942, the Halifax bomber in which Blumlein and several colleagues were flying, crashed and all aboard were killed. He was just days short of his 39th birthday.
For many years there have been rumours about a biography of Alan Blumlein, yet none has been forthcoming. This is the world's first study of a man whose achievements should rank among those of the greatest Britain has produced. This book provides detailed knowledge of every one of his patents and the process behind them, while giving an in depth study of the life and times of this quite extraordinary man.
Contains hitherto unavailable TOP SECRET information
Provides fascinating insights into developments in audio, electronics and radar
Foreword written by Sir Bernard Lovell

The brain and how it works has long been one of life's more intriguing mysteries. Ronald Kotulak, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, explores some of the secrets of the human brain by marshaling the work of the leading researchers in the field. This book, the culmination of Kotulak's Pulitzer Prize-winning series, offers theories on how environment, diet, and a host of other factors affect neurological development. Among other things, the book offers groundbreaking evidence on how unhealthy surroundings foster serious imbalances in neurological chemicals and, in turn, unhealthy or violent behavior. Inside the Brain is essential reading for parents, those concerned with sociological factors on development, or anyone curious about the workings of the mind.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-06-12
A lot of the newest research on how the brain works - how the environment actually determines which genes get turned on (with implications for early childhood education and parenting) - and how we can affect violence and even such things as alzheimers. Definitely worth a read.
So fascinating!.......2006-04-11
If only my reviews could be as interesting as this book, but then maybe if I didn't buy so many books, I'd have more time to include the details on what makes such books as this so wonderful to own. One detail I remember from Kotulak's writing is the information on how the brain fixes itself. When in "formal" school, I was taught so many things that simply were not true. I'm so happy to learn that things I suspected as truth (which went contrary to what was being taught) are now being discovered (or should I say "uncovered"?) as the way things really are.
Must read for parents.......2005-07-30
A very informative book shedding light on cognitive developement especially in children, but also expanding into violence and recovery after injuries inflicted on the brain. A great stepping stone into a very fascinating subject. The book is slightly repetitive thus the missing star, but don't worry it is still very readable.
Section 1: A must for new Parents, Grandparents, and Teacher.......2002-11-23
Section 1 is presented in an easy, non-technical way that permits any person keen on helping develop the young mind, develop it to its maximum capacity. Research is well documented. Educators should be guided by such presentations in the ways school curricula are designed. The sections on brain injury and healing are a little more technical, but point to a very exciting short term future in addressing neruological problems. The concluding remarks refocus the reader on just how important very early and continuous education is important to us.
A Must for parents, educators, doctors, and politicians.......2002-05-28
This easy to read, informative book gives a clear picture of how stimuli connects and wires our brains from conception on. How bad stress, substance abuse, and physical abuse can lead to white matter damage. The research and references are outstanding. This book should be mandatory for all educators and parents. Not Clueless Any More.......2006-11-04
As a newly observant Jew, this fun book was very informative but never dry. It was easy to read and answered any and all questions that I had as to how to keep a kosher home.
I would highly recommend this book, if you too, are "clueless but curious" about keeping kosher.
What makes 'kosher' kosher........2006-03-13
If you think 'kosher' is some kind of antique Jewish tradition or confusing in its dietary requirements, you've come to the right place in deciding to inspect KOSHER FOR THE CLUELESS BUT CURIOUS: A FUN, FACT-FILLED, AND SPIRITUAL GUIDE TO AL THINGS KOSHER. A 24-page color cookbook is included, but the heart of the title lies in its myths, facts, and discussions of what makes kosher foods. Packed with Talmud references, FDA support, references to nutrition and health, and Jewish tradition, KOSHER FOR THE CLUELESS BUT CURIOUS is recommended for a wide audience; from those who keep kosher out of habit to those outside the Jewish religion who wish to understand. Very highly recommended: an exceptional, unusual read.

Baby items are notoriously expensive, and some of the most practical ones (a carrier sling, for instance) can be difficult to find. So invest a little in Sew & Go Baby instead and find dozens of great ideas and step-by-step instructions for assorted gear, clothes, shower gifts and decorations--even a few things to keep older siblings involved. Much of the sewing is relatively easy, and an envelope at the back of the book contains full-size, instantly usable tissue-paper patterns. You may not even realize how much you need a quilted travel high chair, a baby-bed-in-a-bag, or a play blanket that zips up to become a toy tote until you've stitched them up and seen how useful they are--and then you won't leave home without them! --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
great projects.......2005-08-04
I enjoyed this book, though te projects are a little complex, I was able to figure them out. The ideas are great, though!
Frustrating to say the least........2004-07-24
I am a very experienced sewer - have tackled some extremely difficult projects but have never seen such sloppy patterns and directions as those contained in this book. It took at least three times as long as it should have to make the Travel High Chair and matching bib.
I was very enthused when I saw this item and decided to make it as a shower gift for the pregnant daughter of a dear friend. I purchased all the listed materials and sat down to cut out the pattern. What a mess! The bib pattern itself is in two pieces which are to be taped together - the problem is they overlap each other so you have to trace them.
Then when I tried to put the pocket on the bib, the bib was over an inch wider than the pocket - I checked the pattern and sure enough, the bib pattern was wider than the pocket pattern. That was only the beginning. There are no indications of seam allowances, the directions instruct you to pin the bias tape around the high chair, then go on to do something else, you are never instructed to sew the bias tape on. As I got further into the high chair, I discovered that I could not finish it because I needed another item that I had to go back to the fabric store for because it was not included in the materials list. I could go on and on but my advice is to find some other book - the instructions for sewing and assembling the projects are so poorly written, it is a complete waste of money and time unless you are happy making just the very simple items.
I will say that the Travel High Chair is a very clever idea and everyone I have shown it to thought it was terrific. I was able to overcome the lack of adequate directions and mistakes and create a very nice gift but I will not go thru the frustration of trying to make anything else from this book. I tried to locate the author but I couldn't even locate a web page to see if she had posted corrections to her directions. I know this person has written a lot of other books and I have to say I would never buy another of her publications.
A big disappointment.......2004-02-15
Not really for the novice - only the simplest projects are and those can be found free on the net. I made many projects from this book and was disapointed in most. Since I am an experienced sewer, I could see past the inaccurate directions, unclear pictures and haphazard pattern pieces. Some projects where not sized correctly as well - The 3-piece jacket pattern was practically unwearable once I sewed it up because the hood was extremely small. I recommend Kwik-sew's Sewing for Baby - worth the higher price.
Great ideas, hard to use some patterns.......2002-08-10
I loved this book -- an absolute five stars...until I tried to use the patterns. They seem to be laid out at random over four large tissue sheets. Some pattern pieces aren't labeled as to which project they belong to. There's no index to the pattern pages to tell you where to find the pieces of the pattern you want, and the pieces for a single project could appear on several different pages. To cram more in on one sheet, pattern sections sometimes overlap. The overalls are one of the worst pattern examples. A single pattern piece to be cut on a fold shows cut lines for short and long versions, front and back, and four sizes. That's 16 different pattern pieces. The intersecting and poorly labeled cut lines make it impossible to find the outlines for the version you need. Or maybe next to impossible. I haven't given up yet. But for the simpler projects, patterns are clearer, and the ideas in the book really are great.
One baby book with everything you need.......2002-03-21
I have made so many of the fingertip towel bibs, and everyone loves them. The few who got the baby slings loved them too. I can't seem to get past the easiest projects, but this is a complete collection of baby gear to start on when the test is positive (and the rabbit is still warm!) I will never be without a great baby shower gift again, thanks to this book.
