    Book Description

This text analyzes and evaluates the participation of Joseph Wheeler in the Spanish-American War. Southerners believe that Wheeler had a significant impact on the unification of the North and South during this period. Second, this historiographic writing acquaints the secondary teacher of history with the importance of the war in America's move toward imperialism. This research suggests there is a relationship between Joseph Wheeler and the healing of the Civil War wounds. This research investigates two different approaches to Wheeler's involvement in the war. The first approach involved the historical interpretation that McKinley's decision to appoint Wheeler as a Volunteer General was based on political expediency and not on ability. The second approach involved the examination of General Wheeler's primary documents and their interpretations of his participation in the war.

Results of this research showed the following: (1) Joseph Wheeler's involveme the Spanish-American War hastened the healing of North/South wounds; (2) Wheeler's involvement in the overall scheme of the war was more than token; and (3) Wheeler was perceived as an American hero by all regions after the war.

      Book Description

In the last century six discoveries altered the course of human destiny: nuclear fission, the microchip, television, the radio, the telephone and development of the airplane. This is the true story of the man responsible for two of them...and the incredible woman he loved. Sixteen year old Mabel Bell was deaf. He became her teacher and taught her how to speak. After they were married she managed his business affairs and later, when he became world famous, she handled all of his finances. He had a childlike curiosity about everything around him. He was an accomplished pianist, an author, lecturer, and an extraordinary inventive genius—the Venetian blind, the iron lung, the hydrofoil, aircraft tricycle landing gear, wing ailerons, a method of producing fresh water from sea water for sailors adrift, genetics, animal breeding, kites, airfoils, he founded the National Geographic Society, the list goes on and on. Yet above all he was a teacher, a warm hearted kindly man whom the almighty, in his wisdom, endowed with genius. It has been conservatively estimated that over a half billion people on earth owe their livelihood and well being—at least in part—to that genius of Alexander Graham Bell.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent consumer guide on how to use medical services........2005-12-25

This is a good manual about the medical establishment written by an insider, Pamela Gallin, M.D. First, she describes in detail how the medical world works. Second, she tells you how to obtain the best medical care.

The medical profession is organized around teams. The teams are hospitals or medical centers. There are three leagues. At the top are hospitals providing tertiary care. These represent the best city hospitals. They deliver the widest array of specialized medicine services. Their specialists are often among the leading authorities. If you have a complex medical condition that is where you should go. Next are hospitals providing secondary care. They have very good resources but for the rare diseases mentioned above. Finally, you get hospitals providing primary care. These are good for mundane conditions only. For others, they will refer you to the nearest hospital that delivers secondary or tertiary care.

The medical profession has a military like hierarchy. At the bottom are several ranks of nurses. Above them are many ranks of doctors with different level of experience and specialization. There are also hospital administrators who are doctors who got promoted upstairs into managerial roles.

There is a key defense line among doctors that consist of the radiologist, anesthiologist, and pathologist. The author calls them the invisible doctors because they have no patient contact. But, their work is key. The radiologist gives others the broad road map of a disease by interpreting X-Rays. After reading the chapter about the anesthiologists you appreciate their importance. If a surgeon makes a mistake, you are typically ok. If an anesthiologist does, your dead! The pathologist is the true scientist who analyze the disease at the cellular level. He is the one that advise the surgeon if he has cut enough cancerous tissue. These three "invisible" doctors, together are more important than the surgeon.

The main advice the author gives regarding how to get the best care is original. The most important issue is to select the best hospital or medical center. The best hospital will have the best team of doctors, including the key invisible ones mentioned above. Only then, should you focus on choosing a primary doctor. And, she gives good advice on how to select both a hospital and a doctor.

My only issue with the book is that we often can't choose a hospital as she suggests. Employer sponsored health insurance (HMO/PPO) restricts you to a given hospital. Yet, her advice kicks in when you are referred to a hospital outside of the HMO/PPO network. Overall, this is still an excellent insider's view on a hermetic profession.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2005-01-03

Every patient should read this book. The author gives you a view from what the medical field is like from the inside. She helps you understand why certain things are the way they are and when you should and shouldn't accept that. I learned how a doctor/patient relationship works and how I can make it work for me. I learned what questions to ask, who to ask, and when to ask them. This is an excellenct book full of valuable information. It is a must read for all patients!

5 out of 5 stars How to Survive Your Doctor's Care by Dr. Pamela F. Gallin.......2004-03-15

This clearly written book has helped me in many ways. I never realized the importance of choosing the hospital first and then choosing your doctors from one center. Dr. Gallin made me understand how important that can be if you need to be hospitalized. I also came to appreciate the value of second opinions and understand that this is not a slight to doctors.
I feel better prepared to navigate the medical system as a result of reading this excellent book.

      5 out of 5 stars This was a lifesaver.......2004-01-17

Dr. Gallin's book was my roadmap during my mother's recent illness and hospitalization. It showed me how to negotiate the very difficult path after her complex surgery, and how to deal with careless mistakes that made her recovery more challenging. This book gives important focus to all of us who are caring for and worried about ill loved ones, no matter how informed or sophisticated we are. I have given it to several friends who have family members with significant health issues.
It is easy to read, very direct and upbeat.

5 out of 5 stars A must for one and all.......2003-09-23

Dr. Gallin has created a tool for everyone to be able to navigate the medical system. I wish that I had read this book before my recent foot injury as I would have known how to better handle my medical care. In fact at the time of injury, I didn't know what to do when I injured myself. Since I didn't know that I was allowed to make choices on my behalf or choose specific doctors I wound up getting inferior care.

The best part about this book is the simplicity whith which complicated matters are explained. The infusion of real world examples not only exemplifies the topic that is being described, but also allows you to grasp how situations that are not properly monitered can go wrong. You know that if this can happen to a doctor or someone in their family, it can happen to anyone. I got this book from a friend and feel that the future of my health is better and safer for having read this as I will know what to do when there is a problem.

This book is a must for one and all!

        Book Description

Olivier Roellinger ranks among the finest chefs of contemporary cuisine.
He runs the Michelin-starred Relais & Chéteau Les Maisons de Bricourt in Brittany, France. Inspired by his region's maritime heritage, links with the French East India Company, and tales of piracy and swashbuckling adventure, Roellinger has developed a fresh approach to French cuisine. He asserts that an unquenchable quest for new ingredients has kept French cuisine world class since the 17th century, and has spurred harmonies between local ingredients and exotic imports, such as lamb and beans, fish and potatoes, or lobster and tomatoes.
Roellinger hails the explorers who imported bell peppers, pineapples, cloves, cumin, artichokes, and even tomatoes, once feared to be deadly, and recounts the tales that led these ingredients to our tables.
Roellinger's signature dish, scallops with the fourteen exotic spices used in eighteenth-century Brittany, epitomizes the culinary melting pot of contemporary French cuisine.

This was just the Book I was looking for. It has everything that I need and will be of great help in the future with my Crochet. I recommend this for anyone wanting to learn or to update their Crochet Skills.

          4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-24

Honestly, I haven't used it too much because this book is about the things that you can do with crochet, mostly for making things to wear. I have used it as a reference to stuff I am not familiar with. It's not a stitch reference (I can give you another book with tons of stitches in it)but a reference to increasing and decreasing, seams, button holes, pockets and other such embellishments. I will probably use it more when I gat past the afghans.

5 out of 5 stars IT HAS THE ESSENTIALS! :D PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS TOO!.......2006-12-10

i have been on the hunt for the crochet equivilant of Vogue's Ultimate Knitting Book, because i like to crochet and knit equally... what i found is that the equivilant is not out there just yet. this book is excellent though - it's jam packed with, well, just what the title says, the ESSENTIALS! I WISH SO MUCH THAT I HAD THIS BOOK WHEN I FIRST STARTED CROCHETING!!! it's got a hidden spiral binding inside which is great when you are trying to work a technique while following the book's instructions. it has crystal clear illustrations, which to me is critical in understanding the structure and techniques of crochet. i can't say enough about the illustrations - in addition to showing everything so clearly, there are arrows and notes that guide you through each movement. one thing i always find tricky is finding the first and last place to do my stitches in. this book has great illustrations that really explain and show where to correctly begin and end. it has great photographs also - with something extra! the swatches are shown in color yarn, and the technique is shown in a contrasting white yarn. for example, the swatches shown for decreasing are in purple yarn and the two stitches that are decreased into one stitch are in white yarn. in the chapter on seaming, the photographed swatches are made of turquois yarn and the seams are done in white yarn. using the different color yarn for the technique in the photographs is such an excellent feature of this book because it allows you to really see the technique. the chapters of this book are as follows: crochet standards, crochet basics, gauge, decreases, increases, seams, bands, buttonholes and button loops, zippers, pockets, working in the round, filet crochet, intarsia, afghan stitch (tunisian simple stitch), blocking and storage, and there is an index. this book would be fantastic for someone who has never crocheted and wants to learn. it would also be great for a beginner as a great reference to really understanding crochet. i have been crocheting for about 3 years and i am happy that i got this book - i was looking for a great book with extremely clear illustrations, photographs, all of the basic techniques, and finishing techniques. i found what i was looking for and more in this book. now if only those vogue editors would do "The Ultimate Crochet Book"...

            Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

            5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in allowing me to readily access book titles that my students might enjoy reading and the book also went the extra step to identify books by reading level, which is extremely helpful in guiding my reluctant readers to quality reading material.
