An impressive account.......2004-01-18
All the more impressive because the author is not a polished writer. He merely recounts the most astounding events as if he just happened to be taking a walk.
This book brought me to tears, when I realized what our soldiers went through. He talks about beatings and bombings and life in Japanese POW camps, and it sounds like you are there. Somehow all the documentaries I've seen and all the books I read never made me understand what it was REALLY like.
I highly recommend this book as a first person account for anyone who wants to know the truth about being a POW in Japan, and the Bataan Death March.
Personal view of the war.......2002-08-25
I started this book with the thought that it needed an editor. I ended the book with the thought that this book was one of the best books I have read in years. It is a very personal view of a young man from a small rural world dumped into big time history as it happend. He is thrilled and scared and constantly in the present of the war itself. You feel for the teen age kid as he reels through the events like a pinball in a pinball machine. He jumps in sometimes and other times just rolls with the punches. His discriptions are weak (not a writer) but real and griping.

With 50 books to his credit, Gary Null has long been an authority on alternative medicine. The host of the longest-running syndicated daily health radio program, Natural Living with Gary Null, he aims to set the record straight on the plethora of conflicting information about aging--and how to prevent its signs--with his Ultimate Anti-Aging Program.
He tested the program on a group of 1,000 volunteers, who give glowing testimonials about their experiences: "I can see a marked improvement in my mind, spirit, and body"; "Letting go of sugar has been great"; "I lost 20 pounds without dieting!" Null then explains the multipronged antiaging "protocol." First, he advises that you detoxify your body to prevent aging from free-radical damage; then, fortify your immune system with proper nutrition; and lastly, build bone mass (through diet and exercise) to prevent osteoporosis and weakness. This isn't a quick-fix program; it fills nearly 300 pages, with suggestions ranging from sealing off the vents from your garage to your house to drinking a gallon of purified water a day. Null also suggests a low-fat, organic diet, including herbs, nutrients, and other supplements (including acetyl-L-carnitine, phosphatidylserine, zinc, and many in between) that he says may extend life and that helped him run a 50K national championship. The final segment covers "mental gymnastics," including a self-quiz to analyze your value system, levels of anger and stress, and their potential detrimental effects on your health. This is a comprehensive health program, but one that requires a good deal of dedication.
Book Description
Now revised and updated with over 100 breakthrough anti-aging recipes.
Would you like to look younger, feel better, and live longer?
We begin to age the moment we are born. How well we do it and how long it takes depend entirely on how well we take care of ourselves. Now America's leading alternative health expert, Gary Null, offers a revolutionary new program to prevent and reverse the effects of aging, enabling you to rejuvenate your body and feel younger, stronger, and healthier than ever before.
Based on Null's research with over one thousand volunteers who tested his comprehensive, four-part anti-aging regimen,
Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program brings you the same plan that transformed the bodies and mental outlook of the program's participants and was documented in the acclaimed PBS special "How to Live Forever." Grounded in the latest scientific findings on how and why the body ages, the program teaches you the safest, most effective ways to detoxify your body, fortify your immune system, and rebuild bones and muscles through nutrition and exercise. Null provides detailed information on the best supplements, nutrients, and alternative therapies available to fight cancer, arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, and dozens of other age-related ailments. By following the program you'll also be able to:
Eliminate wrinkles
Prevent gray hair and balding
Maintain sharp eyesight
Improve sexual performance
End fatigue
Stay mentally alert and improve your memory
Reverse or eliminate menopause
So throw out your calendar and turn back the clock--this life-changing guide offers everything you need to stay young and in peak condition for decades to come.
Customer Reviews:
Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program.......2005-07-05
Null pretty obviously knows his stuff, even if I can't always agree with certain of his stances, but there was a startlingly bad error regarding a USRDA of a substance which could really mess up one's metabolism if one followed this book. I sent an e-mail to him to complain of the incompetence of the copy editing/proofreading some weeks ago, but he or his office did not deign to acknowledge the error. He will be fortunate if he does not hear from someone's attorney or health professional on this matter, and I will now take any info from Dr Null with a large grain of non-iodized Celtic sea salt.
Gary Null's Ultimate Anti -Aging Program.......2005-05-02
I bought this book after seeing Gary Null speaking on a PBS TV program. I was so impressed with his knowledge and the hope he offered in the anti-aging remedies he discussed and other valuable information he was offering in this book. I just couldn't wait to read it. Unfortunately, after I purchased this book, I was very disappointed. My strongest impression about the book was the very disorganized way it was prepared. There is a serious lack of appropriate catagorization and sequential arrangement of subject matter, topics, etc. It was hard for me to believe that Gary Null had anything to do with the preparation of the book. I thought he had just mistakenly designated an unprofessional, inexperienced person to take on that responsibility for him. After approximately 3 years, I'm still trying to understand his anti-aging program/s and the approach of implementing them. Its hard to make sense of a bunch of information randomly thrown together. Since then I have found valuable books with practicle approaches for emplementing the anti-aging programs in them. I recommend The Perricone Prescription, and The Wrinkle Cure by Nicholas Perricone M.D.. He has recently published additional anti-aging books, as well.
Possible value as a nutritional reference source.......2005-03-12
I cannot really recommend this book as one to read and learn from easily. Maybe as a reference book, but not as a stand alone reference book, for although it does contain a great deal of information, some of it is incomplete. This book is still a possible candidate for a nutrition library, since nobody has all the answers, and since it is often possible to find the solution to a health/aging problem in a collection of books and web sources. A well stocked nutrition library is therefore a good idea.
I have doubts, however. I am reasonably knowledgeable about nutrition, and found nothing much new in the book, apart from the interesting recommendation in Chapter 8 that we juice enormous quantities of vegetables to get enough chlorophyll to detoxify the body. (Many reviewers have complained that the author did not say which vegetables to juice. But this complaint is probably not fair. Chlorophyll is GREEN, and the greener the vegetable the more chlorophyll it has. So the author obviously means that you juice any green veggies you happen to like, but only vegetables you would normally eat in quantity, like cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, lettuce, etc.--certainly NOT rhubarb leaves, which are poisonous. The author is probably only guilty of assuming his readers know what chlorophyll is.) I don't know if the chlorophyll juice works or not. The idea was new to me. I may be willing to go along with the author and give it a cautious try, in smaller amounts to begin with. Since veggies are good for me, the veggie juice is not likely to do me any harm.
But overall, this is not a well written book. Eighty pages of testimonials, in italics, about the author's anti-aging program was just too much, and I just skipped over them. The book is not well organized either, and he does not lay out the promised anti-aging nutritional plan. Instead he just gives us long lists of foods, supplements, and even drugs, and activities, and the benefits associated with each. You couldn't possibly try them all. And in some cases, if you were on medication, you would be wise to consult a doctor first. For example, grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which he recommends for lowering cholesterol, can enhance and affect the action of many drugs, which he does not mention. Echinacea, which he recommends for enhancing the immune system, should only be taken for short periods, which he again does not mention. Thus the book is also incomplete in its information. It has possible value as a reference book in conjunction with other similar books.
Spend Your Money On Spinach Instead.......2005-02-03
I love Gary Null's radio program. It's so inspirational that I bought this book hoping for more of the same. Sadly, I found it one of the worst organized books I ever seen, badly edited, and full of pages and pages of superfluous "testimonials" (literally over fifty pages of insubstantial fan letters!) I'm sorry to write this because I am a fan of Gary's and appreciate what he does on the radio but I feel compelled to warn the prospective buyer away from this book.
Healing the natural way!.......2004-12-26
A good book with an effective writing style. He's classified food into different categories which makes it very easy to understand. As the doctor suggested I made soya a regular part of my diet. I now drink 'soy ff e e' a caffeine free substitute for regular coffe that I found on the net at www.S o y co f f e e.c o m, which is extremely tasty too. Soya is supposed to be highly effective against Parkinson's disease. Dr. Null advocates an exercise program and an organic vegetarian diet in conjunction with herb and vitamin supplements to detoxify the body.

Amazing collection of successful recipes.......2003-04-05
So far we have tried 15 of the 150 recipes and they have all been good. We rate dishes on a 1 to 10 scale, and all in this cookbook have been 7 or higher. It is taking us a while to get through the recipes because we are repeating so many of the 8's and 9's! Also, all of the recipes include the calorie and carb counts, which is very helpful.
YUM!.......2002-12-18
I bought this book because I've been trying to avoid Chinese take-out! I love Chinese food, but take-out can be so greasy. By making my own, I can control the oil and sodium in each dish.
An avid collector of Cooking Light books, I had to pick this up! More than 100 recipes; lots of fish, poultry, and beef selections; lots of variety. Got it yesterday; made the beef with spinach and ginger sauce for dinner that night. Got good reviews from my testers!
Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book covers more than Asian stir fry. Cuisines covered include Mexican and Italian, with fajitas and other quick cooking, high-heat dishes.
Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
a book for advanced amateurs.......2000-06-01
Well written well illustrated, its a book for serius amateurs looking for a very accurate and detailed way to fit a drawer, install hinges, locks and several other tips useful for an advanced amateur or woodworker in small scale and/or fine work. It is not for industrial scale production. The chapter on veneering and inlay is just a copy from a good book published by fine woodworking:Veneering Marquetry and Inlay. Overall, it's a good book, that will give a several good ideas, however don't expect the ultimate guide in woodworking techniques.

Book Description
Today's gardeners have more plants and design ideas to choose from than ever before. But is there something missing in their gardens if they ignore their ties to the past? Denise Wiles Adams has written a remarkable book of history and horticulture that documents the changing plant palette of American gardens. From the colonial era to the pre-World War II period, no region of the country is neglected and no major plant group unrepresented. From a database of more than 25,000 plants and hundreds of antique nursery catalogs, she has distilled a unique survey of American ornamental gardens. Nobody concerned with historic homes and properties can afford to be without it. An important resource that will be consulted for generations, Restoring American Gardens is a vital link between gardeners and their predecessors throughout history.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure trove of information on heirloom ornamentals.......2004-05-03
Gardeners who enjoy a healthy dose of gardening history in their guides will find Denise Wiles Adams' Restoring American Gardens a treasure trove of information on heirloom ornamentals from 1640-1940. Small color photos of each plant abound, but it's the paragraphs of description for each, including garden design notes and special remarks, which sets this apart from competitors.
Amazing piece of research, well presented.......2004-04-16
This is an amazing piece of research and one of the few books whose appendices are a "must read".
The bok is about American ornamental plant history - the story of garden plants from their introduction, usually from Europe, or from the local fields and forests. It answers questions such as "Who first cultivated it in America?", "How was it used?", "Who propagated or sold it?" and "Why was it popular?".
The writer consulted over 300 seed and nursery catalogues from all over the US and ended up with a data base of over 25,000 different taxa.
The first chapter of the book looks at the historical detail of the garden landscape and it is illustrated with well-selected photographs, many taken from postcards. The second chapter links the gardens to the architectural styles from different time periods and the third chapter looks at the way garden styles evolved in different regions of the country. The largest part of the book is a catalogue of over 1000 heirloom plants - trees, shrubs, vines, perennials and roses that were offered for sale between 1719 - 1939. For each plant there is given common names, family, date of introduction, earliest American citation, zones and description, taken from the garden writers of history.
This book presents a vast amount of material and it's a treasure trove for the garden historian. Even the most casual reader will enjoy the historical and botanical illustrations. It really is a treat to find such a well-organized work of scholarship that is so readable and attractively presented.

Great book!.......2007-03-11
This book was fabulous! It is helping us to understand some of the comments and situations we are dealing with through our adoption process!
Great information.......2005-04-21
Discusses all sorts of issues on a high level. Great introduction to issues that may come up in adoption! And it isn't "scary." ;)
Down-to-earth advice (at a great price!).......2000-08-31
The bargain pricetag notwithstanding, this is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. It's concise but comprehensive, covering domestic and international adoption issues, special needs topics, open adoption, and a host of other important matters related to building happy, healthy adoptive families. I found the material on interracial and international adoption issues to be among the book's strongest features; the author offers great advice for sensitively answering kids' questions, straightforwardly dealing with nosy strangers, and maximizing the joy of being a multicultural family. An excellent resource.

Book Description
Among the many Japanese ceramic artists working today, Ryoji Koie is the one at the most critical interface with contemporary art. Whether teabowl, vase, open-mouthed cylinder, tray, or bottle, Koie's chosen shapes are instantly identifiable as pottery yet they become departure-points for an extraordinary range of surface treatments from the indulgent to the austere.
This volume illustrates and considers a body of work created by Koie during a residency in Seattle at the University of Washington. He located natural deposits of clay in a variety of local sites. Vases, vessels, trays, footed plates, and "stretched" plates were created in profusion, each subject to the artist's freewheeling imagination in altering, throwing, ripping and tearing, and applying glaze and liquid clay or "slip."
