Book Description
You'll read about Duty, Honor, Courage - from the testing of a submarine, to the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger, to the everyday sacrifice of men and women in uniform, whether serving during peace or war. You'll walk bloodied beaches, soar over enemy turf, pray, crawl in and out of caves, tend the wounded, shoot and be shot at, feel your heart race with fright as flak comes at you from every direction...walk the deck...hit the deck...feel the heat as fire dances across the deck, into the cockpit and into the foxhole you occupy. Your heart will constrict as the man in front of you takes the bullet meant for you. You'll know the painful bite of shrapnel, the gnawing ache hunger brings and red-hot anger as a comrade falls. But most of all, you'll experience total, unabridged fear as you watch the enemy advance through the eyes of the author, and a swelling of pride as you meet America's veterans.

Great 4th of July read! Makes you proud to be an American!.......2006-06-30
The forward for this wonderful collection of stories is written by Senator Bob Dole, and the introduction is written by Senator Bob Kerry. (both former veterans) All proceeds go to building a monument to our soldiers in North Platte, Nebraska.
I am proud to be a contributing author in this wonderful tribute to the men and women who serve their county with honor and bravery. The book is a collection of non-fiction and fiction stories and poems written by Veterans and family members of veterans. It has stories from WW I to The Persian Gulf.
My story, "My Hero, My Dad" tells the story of how my dad, John F. Ross, won the Bronze Star of Valor during WW II. An excerpt - On May 5, 1945, near Leonding, Austria, a convoy of Company `K' (260th Infantry Regiment) was subjected to an intense 88mm artillery barrage. The men dismounted from trucks and sought cover. Realizing his truck was in the artillery concentration and knowing the value of the vehicle to the company, Private First Class John F. Ross left his covered position and ran back to the truck. He managed to drive it through enemy fire to safety and was later decorated with the Bronze Star of Valor for his bravery.
The Let Us Not Forget anthology spotlights American heroes in battle. The men and women that fight for our country's freedoms. It honors our military and our nation with stories that will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly, make you proud to be an American! Don't forget to thank a soldier today.
God Bless America!!
A Must Read for All Americans.......2003-01-21
The Let Us Not Forget Anthology is a tribute to the 20th century American Veteran. It is an anthology written by many authors; some veterans, some families members and friends. The book is a collection of stories and poetry from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf wars.
When you read this book, you will be transported to the front lines of Germany, the Pacific Ocean, Korea, South East Asia and the Middle East and realize the sacrifices made by the 20th century American veteran; those who returned and those who did not. Most of the stories are of just ordinary people who when asked, served their country, honorably. The stories in the book are short, approximately 2-5 pages, which makes the book a quick read.
I am the author of a story in volume one and a poem in volume two. As the wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and niece of veterans of 20th century wars, I was delighted to contribute my work to this anthology.
All royalties from the sale of this book will go to building a monument in North Platte, Nebraska. The forward and introduction are written by Senator Bob and Senator Bob Kerrey, two veterans who went on to serve in the U.S. Senate.
A Book Worth Reading!.......2002-09-25
Let Us Not Forget, a timely tribute to America's 20th century veterans, evokes a feeling of intense patriotism in these times of global uncertainty. This anthology gives the reader a feeling of the selfless contributions and sacrifices made by men and women whose only driving force was protecting the freedoms that the people of the United States of America still enjoy today. The contributors - some veterans, some relatives of veterans and some journalists - are not all award winning writers but they do recount touching stories of bravery, sacrifice and determination made by the countless men and women who willingly served to protect this country from those who would seek to destroy her. These stories, poems and excerpts from letters are written from the heart with the sole intention of telling a story and touching lives and hearts. Many of the unknown heroes who shared their stories returned home, many did not. Since most of the contributions to this book are relatively short I found myself reading just one more, just one more ... until there were none left to read. But I found I could take heart because another volume of these wonderful stories is due out shortly.
This book has a forward and an introduction written by Sen. Bob Dole and Sen. Bob Kerrey, respectively. These two men know the courage it takes to answer duty's call and fight for their country. I would like to offer many thanks to the editors, Vurlee A. Toomey, Helen Kay Polaski and Margaret Marr, for compiling this tribute and sharing it. This book was truly a mission of love on their parts, as well as all who contributed to it, because all royalties from the sale of this book will go to the America's 20th Century Veterans Memorial located in North Platte, Nebraska.

Book Description
This revised and expanded edition provides a presentation of the essential steps of self-hypnosis and goal-directed relaxation and imagery. Case studies and scripts for mastering self-hypnosis are also included.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most comprehensive books on self-hypnosis.......2006-04-11
This is one of the most comprehensive books on self-hypnosis - it covers many of the most-common areas of application: helping you to lose weight, quit smoking, reduce pain, etc.
Structure of hypnosis is very simple - you get into a state of hypnosis, work on your outecome and return to normal conscious awareness. Many hypnosis books provide induction scripts to help people get into a state of hypnosis, and of course you can use them - but hypnosis is not a mechanical process. Success with self-hypnosis comes from having fun with your subjective experience and what you read in books may give you ideas how to go about it, but ultimately self-hypnosis is a very intimate experience that you'll end up doing your own way.
Excellent Book for Self-Hypnosis.......2004-10-29
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist - this book is the first one on the list of books I recommend to anyone interested in self-hypnosis. I consider it one of the best books on self-hypnosis. It is very well written and it covers vast range of topics whether you desire to lose weight, stop smoking, increase self-confidence, manage pain, reduce stress or just about anything else.
If you happen to be one of those who find this book too challenging or advanced and are looking just for some scripts you can use, you may also check out Instant Self-Hypnosis: How To Hypnotize Yourself with Eyes Open.
I agree.......2004-09-23
Having read some of the reviews for this, I must say I agree with all of them. Perhaps it is less about whether this is a 'great book' and more about who might value what it offers the most.
I suspect that the format of the book was developed from a live training format. It builds from beginning with ideas which are developed again and again in different contexts. Just reading the book may leave you struggling to distill the main concepts, perhaps feeling a little overwhelmed and confused about where to start.
There are suggested scripts and ideas for entering trance, but much of the information is presented as examples of how the information might be developed and made personal to the reader. There are many books out there which will supply scripts for particular problems. If this is what you want, then you may prefer to start somewhere else or at least supplement this book with another.
Perhaps you are interested in exploring your own eperiences, even using your current 'problem' as a means to that end . If so, then I am sure that you, like me, will find this a great book to keep coming back to; for ideas and inspiration. I think Milton Erickson stated something like, that given about 14hrs of bullding skills in hypnosis many peoples problems would accidentally 'cure' themselves.
not a beginner book.......2004-05-04
While I found the book useful I would NOT recommend it to a beginner as it assumes you know how inductions & scripts work....and while it gives ideas & suggestions... It gives NO scripts or fundamentals. And while it touches on many topics, it covers none very well. The book lacks structure, focus and clear direction.
Hard to use, but good information.......2004-04-24
This book has some wonderful information about self-hypnosis. In fact, as a textbook on the subject, I think it's excellent. But if you're planning on actually using the info for practical results, this isn't the best book. There are other books on self-hypnosis that have a more easy-to-follow approach to achieving your goals.

This Book Changed My Life.......2000-09-20
This is the first book on nutrition I ever read, back in 1978, and it changed my whole life. It was the book that really got through to me the fact that how I felt, emotionally, was *directly linked* to what I ate. A must read if you're interested in nutrition, and even more of a must read if you're a junk food junkie -- and also have emotional and/or mental problems. Your brain chemistry is dependant on the food you eat. Believe it.

Customer Reviews:
A great astrology book to help you in your relationships.......2004-04-30
Pauline Edward's book, Astrological Crosses in Relationships: Your Personal Energy Signature shows us how our astrological signs can be grouped into one of three categories: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Once she has your attention with interesting and informative anecdotes she explains the importance of the crosses in all kinds of relationships: love relationships, parent and child, business partners, and friendships.
This profound yet highly practical book gives us valuable information about why the different astrological signs think and act the way they do and how it impacts our relationships. Written in an easy to understand yet challenging style for the astrologically challenged, this book is for the reader who wants to learn about astrology beyond the daily horoscope page in the newspaper.
Reading Pauline Edward's book helps us to understand why people think and communicate the way they do, which in turn helps us to improve our relationships. That's no small feat! In depth, well-written, and informative, Astrological Crosses in Relationships is a valuable asset to anyone interested in understanding human behavior
Misleading Title.......2002-07-11
While this is a perfectly good book with lots of helpful information, there are, in fact only 6 [yes SIX] pages devoted to relationships. I was expecting both from the title and description an in-depth look at synastry, relationship charts and how crosses work within a DUAL setting.
This is a fine book for beginning astrology people. Chatty, friendly and easy to read. It is NOT a book for professional astrologers. They will no doubt be disappointed from the lack of new material or insights.
A good start, but not the final word.......2002-07-10
As promised on the back cover, this book does approach the astrological crosses (a.k.a. the quadruplicities or the qualities) from a new angle. No longer are the cardinal signs merely "starters," fixed signs "maintainers," and mutable signs "adapters." Ms. Edward makes an intriguing argument that the cardinal signs share a range of traits centered on idealism, energy, and respect for authority; the fixed signs focus on their personal perceptions and creativity; and the mutable signs have analysis, socialization, and the observing of standards in common.
Unfortunately the book itself is uneven in quality. The tone varies from 'appropriate for non-astrologers' to 'aimed towards serious astrology students.' Astrologers may wonder why no birth data was included with the sample charts, even of celebrities. The author's chatty tone makes the book move quickly and not feel like a textbook (good point!), but can get so anecdotal and gossipy that I wondered how well she was actually proving her points. Occasionally there's an internal contradiction, as when the author warns mutable signs not to generalize about people using sociological and psychological classifications, apparently not noticing that her book is about doing just that, using the crosses as classifications. And a book of this overall quality deserves better proofreading.
All in all, it's an interesting start, and I hope it encourages other astrological writers to explore this subject further.
Book Description
LUST FOR LIFE is a fictionalized biography of the Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh and is based primarily on Van Gogh's three volumes of letters to his brother, Theo. Van Gogh was a violent, clumsy and passionate man who was driven to the extremity of exhaustion by his fervor to get life -- the essence of it -- into paint. Irving Stone treats the artist with great compassion and gives us a portrait that is sympathetic but fair.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Introduction to Art.......2007-10-06
I loved this book. For someone like me, with just a passing knowledge of art and art history, it was pretty amazing to learn about Van Gogh's development as an artist and the Impressionist art movement. In addition, I think that its two major themes of expression and immortality are going to have a lasting effect on me.
By expression, I mean that Van Gogh put all his time and energy into expressing himself in a way that he felt was making the best use of his skills. For him, his calling was a new form of art, and he stuck with it despite receiving no recognition or profit for his work during his lifetime. By immortality, I mean that although Van Gogh was not successful in his lifetime, his work lives on and is hung in the most important museums in the world.
Highly recommended.
A Man Amongst Men.......2007-06-29
This is a beautiful novel about a beautiful human being. If you love Van Gogh's paintings (he is my personal favorite of all painters) then by all means, you need to read this wonderful book. In his prose, Stone is able to paint a vivid, vibrant, illuminating portrait of an amazing artist. I was truly blown away and completely consumed from the first chapter on. I actually read this fine story after visiting the Musee d'Orsay (Museum Orsay) in Paris and seeing first hand the magnificent works of this illustrious Impressionist. Of all the great many paintings presented at the Louvre and d'Orsay, it was the Van Gogh's that captivated me more than all the others (which is saying a lot, because the whole place is captivating!). I couldn't believe some of his self-portraits. What really fascinated me the most was the despondency in those steel blue eyes of his. This is what led me to read this story. I wanted to know where all that pain and suffering came from. Irving Stone answered all of my questions and then some. He is a brilliant and insightful writer and I will be looking forward to reading his novel "The Agony and the Ecstasy" which is based on the life of another favorite artist of mine - Michelangelo.
Anyone who is struggling to become an artist needs to read this! Talk about sacrifice and desire and heart and passion... this man Van Gogh was a true original. A man like no other before or since.
"...for by sadness the countenance of the heart is made better."
I can't recommend this one enough.
Living for Lust.......2006-11-07
I should have read this biography sooner. I used to be in love with his paintings, and even fantasized that IF I were to travel back in time, I would've married him -- all this BEFORE I read this book. After I read it I found out that there was one such infatuated woman (Margot), and also a tragic unrequited love story that led him to religion and then to painting. Anyone who is creative will sympathize with the extent to which pain can be transformed into the strength to create. The creative path is not always materially rewarding, and even if it is all an artist has, it will continuously change others' lives. I absorbed every word of this book and was hooked until the very end. Poverty and disinterest is ephemeral... belief in oneself is revolutionary.
An excellent book.......2006-02-26
An excellent book, amazing story, and very well-written. This book will take you through Van Gogh's life, inform you about this amazing but troubled artist, and leave you with your mouth open. Recommended for all ages and types of people. The only tough thing about the book is that it is sort of a slow journey... you might find yourself wandering a bit in the early chapters, but it is immensely satisfying if you can forge through them and take an amazing ride through this guy's life (don't skip any chapters).
Excellent.......2006-01-17
I just loved it !!! It makes knowing about Van Gogh's life even more interesting, after reading it one can appreciate his art even more- if that's possible !!

Book Description
Published on the centenary of his death, this is the first comprehensive biography of Vincent Van Gogh in over 25 years. It glows with new information. The author wanted his book to shed new light on his subject, and it does.
We learn much of Van Gogh's early years: his conflict about becoming an artist, his strong spiritual beliefs and the failed love affairs that deepened his depression and despair.
"A lucid, balanced biography. Sweetman's understated study makes the artist's story and hard-won genius particularly moving." (Kirkus Reviews)
Customer Reviews:
What a gem this book is.......2005-09-06
Out of curiosity I started reading Van Gogh's abridged letters (Dear Theo) and got confused who the main characters were in his life. So I bought this biog on a whim . . . and couldn't put it down. I even cried at the end. Sweetman is a terrific writer. He helped me figure out not only the difference between "K" and "Cent" and "Sein" and the artists he hung with and the Doctors who attended him off and on throughout his tortured life, but Sweetman helped me make sense of impressionism and post impressionism, the "solon" system which made the independent galleries so radical (and necessary) and much more. Despite the inclusion of great photos of many of Van Gogh's drawings and paintings, like the letters, this book is best read if one has a picture collection close by so one knows what painting is being discussed. Interestingly, VVG chronicled his life in such detail that biographers like Sweetman can easily track his whereabouts for nearly all of his 37 years. Sweetman distills the 600+ letters in which VVG ruminated to his brother Theo about art, women, religion, poverty, color, what the grass looked like after a rain, etc etc etc. Great job, Sweetman! Thank you.
A Rare Glimpse into Vincent's Mind.......2001-09-08
I read this book several years ago and it taught me so much about art, life, love and passion that Sweetman's biography resonates in me still. Vincent is the most famous artist on the planet today and so much has been written about him. But David Sweetman really took the time to update so much information - just as he did in Gauguin's biography - that you learn so much more by reading this book. I recommend it to everyone who wants to understand about mental illness and all the stigma that goes with it. Vincent was very brave to rise above his pain and blessed the world with so much beauty and colour. This text refers to the hardcover book.
I love this book!.......1999-09-21
If you want to know Vincent... this is the best book out there. Sweetman is thorough and empathetic and like the Don McLean song, lovingly writes through Vincent's eyes.
A first rate biography.......1999-07-10
The review above is absolutely right. This is one of the best biographies of Van Gogh out there. Sweetman's approach is thoughtful and well researched. This biography has proven to be an invaluable reference for my own Van Gogh research. I hope that the publisher of this book will consider reprinting it. It's a real shame that Sweetman's excellent book isn't easily available to anyone interested in Vincent van Gogh's life and art.
Thoughtful and fascinating.......1998-03-14
I read just about every biography of Vincent van Gogh I can get my hands on, and this is by far one of if not the best I've ever come across. David Sweetman writes with a thoughful consideration to the life of Vincent beyond the popular label of a "mad genius" and delves into the soul of this brilliant man. Vincent was a generous, loving human being with such capacity for giving that he bewildered those around him, that he was mistaken as insane, and cast aside. Mr. Sweetman does not dwell uneccesarily on the events which biographers today are so captivated by-the ear thing, the Gauguin thing, etc. This was a man who tried to find his place in the world as a not just a painter, but hopefully a husband and father, as well. This book brings to light the devotion of Theo, and, after Vincent's and her husband's deaths, the devotion of Jo. The surprising friendship of Signac, and the not so surprising mental instability of the Dr. Gachet. It is a shame that this book is out print, because it is a fascinating read for not only lovers of Vincent, for readers of biographies in general. It is well worth the search.

Book Description
This large, lavish journey through the art of the 19th-century French landscape offers a host of masterful works, among them Corot's Forest of Fontainbleau, Millet's End of the Hamlet of Gruchy, Renoir's Rocky Crags at L'Estaque, and Monet's Rue de la Bavolle, Honfleur. As is often the case, however, some of the most wonderful things to see are also the least expected: rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous works by some of their lesser-known but equally important contemporaries. Unlike previous books on the topic, Impressions of Light presents a unique and stunningly complete group of work that introduces a new level of complexity into the discussion of French landscapes. Rather than considering the landscape as a steady, linear development and the product of a single medium, it takes into account the many crosscurrents and intersecting developments in French art, from the Barbizon school through the post-Impressionist period. In addition, it studies the landscape in a variety of media--painting, prints, and photography--exploring both the individual artists' perceptions and the ways in which they influenced each other. With over 80 paintings and 70 works on paper from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's collections, and published to accompany a major exhibition, Impressions of Light encompasses more than 100 years and 56 artists working in a dozen different media. It holds the broadest possible view, yet never loses sight of the extraordinary intricacy that makes the landscape so enduringly appealing.
Customer Reviews:
Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes.......2003-06-21
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.
A spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history.......2002-11-15
Impressions Of Light: The French Landscape From Corot To Monet is a lavishly, richly, spectaculrly beautifully, illustrated art history showcasing one hundred years of French art and 56 French artists. Included area wealth of rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous illustrative works by lesser-known by equally significant contemporaries. Of particular interest is the attention paid to intersecting developments in French art from the Barbizon school through post-Impressionism. Enhanced with more than 80 paintings and 70 works on paper drawn from the MFA collections, showcasing the French landscape through painting, prints, and photography, Impressions Of Light deftly explores individual artists' perceptions as well as the manifold ways that influenced each other. Impressions Of Light will prove to be a welcome and much appreciated contribution to Art History collections in general, and 19th Century French landscape art and photography in particular.

Van Gogh, a man worth getting to know........2006-12-19
In his early years as an artist, Vincent Van Gogh vividly related his concept of art to his brother Theo in two separate letters from July of 1882, numbered 218 and 221. In this book of Vincent's letters, translated by W.H. Auden, these letters can be more carefully read than if I were to paraphrase or quote bits and pieces here. His letters are a portal into the mind of a great artist and a misunderstood man. While there are more complete books of Van Goghs writings available, this collection gets to the core of Vincent as a man and as an artist.
Vincent was not some wacko who cut off part of his ear and shot himself from insanity, he was rather, a deeply caring man, a genius who observed life so far over the heads of the so-called art experts that they could not see his vision. I did not become a lover of Vincent's art work until after I had read this book of his letters and was able to see more clearly what he was conveying on canvas. I have admired Auden as a poet for many years and this translation of his is far more readable than other translations I have read since. For anyone who has ever admired Van Gogh's paintings, this book is a must read, but for anyone who has seen them and not appreceiated his perception of the world, read this book and you will change your mind and your heart as well. You might even come to understand and love this great man's artwork. JJ
An excellent selection of letters.......2006-10-20
The British poet WH Auden has compiled a wonderful selection from Van Gogh's letters. Auden makes his selection..."What," I asked myself, "is the single most important fact about Von Gogh?" To that there seemed only one answer - "That he painted pictures". Hence the selection focuses on those letters which contain his reflections on the art of painting and the problems of being a painter. Other letters, eg to his father and brother, are included as they throw light upon Van Gogh's career as a painter. Also included are descriptions of VG by his acquaintances, 40 illustrations and a brief biography by his nephew. Of interest to artists as well as admirers of Van Gogh's works.
Product Description
LUST FOR LIFE is a fictionalized biography of the Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh and is based primarily on Van Gogh's three volumes of letters to his brother, Theo. Van Gogh was a violent, clumsy and passionate man who was driven to the extremity of exhaustion by his fervor to get life -- the essence of it -- into paint. Irving Stone treats the artist with great compassion and gives us a portrait that is sympathetic but fair.

I will never buy a used book again!!!.......2007-05-10
Although I enjoyed the book, I was appalled at the condition. I guess the old saying of you get what you pay for truly applies to used books listed on your website.
This was the first time I purchased a used book and I will never do it again. I can hardly wait to see what the other used books I ordered look like.

What makes this book so enjoyable is that it has it all. Most books I've seen on Vincent are either loaded with art but the book layout is impossible to read due to lack of organization; or the opposite--books with tons of information but nothing but black and white thumbnail sketches. This book is a gem; extremely colorful plus has some black and white-- but each and every page is fully organized and beautiful to read and look at. Bruce Bernard, you have got to be the most organized man in the universe! WOW!
A must own for anyone and everyone! Especially the beginner to intermediate van Gogh enthusiast, however; the personal belongings, photographs, quotes and succinctness of this book would be well appreciated by the most acumen of Vincent's studiers/admirers.
P.S. I highly recommend this book and any other of the series of Eyewitness books that strike your fancy. I also own book #25 Crystal and Gems. There are 110 different books from everything to Music, Fossils, Reptiles, Invention, Weather, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Bible Lands, Volcano and Earthquake, Shark; Aztec, Inca and Maya; Castle, Pyramid, Ancient China, Archeology, North American Indian, Ocean, Battle, Witches and Magic-Makers, Space Exploration, Crime Detection, Force and Motion, Chemistry, Time and Space, Astronomy, Earth, Human Body, Medicine, Technology, Electronics, Renaissance, Impressionism, Goya, Manet, Monet, Leonardo & his times, Future, Mythology, Titanic, Football, Hurricane & Tornado, Presidents, Baseball....on and on! Oh I've got to buy a few more I see!
Good things come in small packages.......2000-05-06
For a smaller book designed to give a high level overview of Van Gogh's life and career as an artist, this book is surprisingly informative and well written. Van Gogh's life is covered in a well researched commentary and there are also sub-sections devoted specifically to "Masterpieces". The graphics are excellent and the analysis clear and concise. In terms of a good, brief overview of Vincent van Gogh, this book is first rate.

Very, Very Good!.......2003-04-17
I thoroughly enjoyed it! It's one of the best accounts ever written about a POW's horrible life under the Japanese. It is very well written and very, very good and authentic. LTC Miner's memory about all of the people he met and knew is absolutely unbelievable. I wish you could have Spielberg in Hollywood make a movie, now that POW's are again an issue.
