Book Description
Now that the author is close to 80, he calls upon his memory to produce a biography that recalls many of life's twists and turns. From working for a communications company to serving in the Navy during WWII, he also recalls his early years, and then later on in life. He talks about why certain things are remembered and other things are lost.
In the end, he is very upbeat on life from all the experiences that come with living. You will find this book both funny and, in some ways, startling.
Book Description
Alexander Graham Bell forever changed the world. The telephone and his many other landmark inventions rank among the most transforming and enduring of the modern era. But it was his work with the deaf, teaching as well as inventing tools to ease communication, that he considered his life's work. The son of a speech therapist father and hearing impaired mother, his stellar achievements in sound reproduction and aviation give proof that he fit his own definition of an inventor. He said, "An inventor a man who looks upon the world and is not contented with things as they are. He wants to improve whatever he sees, he wants to benefit the world." This is a compelling biography of a true scientific visionary. Oxford Portraits in Science is an on-going series of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. These illustrated biographies combine accessible technical information with compelling personal stories to portray the scientists whose work has shaped our understanding of the natural world.

I love callanetics!!!!!!.......2007-10-10
I bought the DVD's 10 years younger and super callanetics here on Amazon. I am not ready for super callanetics (although I have heard it works amazingly). I am on my 3rd hour of Callanetics. My stomache is already flatter. I look better, I feel better. I also run and/or hike and bike a few days a week for added cardio. I got the book because of my job, I travel a lot and do not always have access to a DVD player. I am trying to download the DVD onto my Ipod video, but am having difficulties (I blame Apple, not the makers of the DVD). This book is great! I love all the before and after photos and written instructions. I already have a good idea of the exercises from the DVD so the book is nice when I don't have a DVD player handy. I HIGHLY recommend this exercise program. I feel great and energized after (and my sex drive is improved! nice little added benefit :) I recently started doing some yoga shoulderstands and some old school yoga/breathing stomache exercises to supplement this as well. I have been unhappy with my cellulite and stomache for years..... I think I may have found the answer. Be warned, It is hard! I can't finish all the exercises, but, all in due time....
The BEST!.......2007-09-27
Still the best excercise plan for women over 50 that has ever been written! Re-marketed (?) on late night TV under a new name 'Fluidity', the concept and execution of these exercises is timeless. Opening the package was like saying 'Hello!' again to an old friend.
Indeed, still the best!.......2006-11-25
A few months ago I was clearing up my attic and found the old book. I love fitness, and have done it for ages, but my arms and legs invariably DO bulk, whatever the experts say and whatever method I use! Must be genetics, I have very strong musculature.
I always ended up a lot fitter, but not fitting my dresses and blouses anymore... So I started Callanetics again, and the results are great! Also, I'm no longer bored with the exercises, as I was long ago!
Is Callan P. still active, do any of you know that?? I'd love a new DVD!
The Best!.......2006-08-28
I've done Callanetics off and on for years. Of course, like most people, I get sidetracked and stop exercising for whatever reason, but I always come back to Callanetics because it WORKS! No, you won't lose massive amounts of weight, but if you are relatively normal weight for you, and you just need to tone up and get everything back where nature originally put it, this is the one for you. I would advise a cardio session a couple of times a week to compliment this program. If you are still skeptical, I would simply invest in the book and look at the pic of the hourly transormation of the one woman throughout her 19 classes. It is simply amazing. then if you aren't convinced, resell the book here or on ebay.
Inspirational.......2005-03-29
As a long-time fan of Callanetics, I find this book tremendously inspiring. Whenever I get into a slump with my exercise routine, I pull it off the shelf and read it from cover to cover. Before I know it, I'm psyched up and ready to go again.
It opens with some background on Callan Pinckney and how she developed this form of "deep muscle" exercise. After that, you'll be shown some AMAZING before & after photos of real people. One woman appears to have shaved 20 years from her body in just 19 hours of work!
The chapters that follow describe each exercises from the "One-hour Program" in great detail, letting you know exactly what you should be feeling and what kind of results you can expect. Interestingly enough, the routine from the book contains five more exercises than the original one-hour video does. (Two more hip & behind exercises, two additional floor stretches and something called the "open & close" that works the entire body.)
Next up is Callan's "15-minute Maintenance Program", followed by several chapters that address many common physical conditions. If you have a bad back or delicate knees like I do, you'll really appreciate the modifications provided.
In the last chapter, we get to witness Callan personally demonstrating the "Advanced Program." While I may never achieve her strength and flexibility (at least not in this lifetime!), just seeing photos of her in action takes my breath away. At nearly 50 years of age when this book was produced, her athletic grace is astounding.
Still, while the book does contain some great pointers on technique, I must warn you it's no substitute for live instruction. You'd never guess how small and delicate most of these movements really are. They're almost *imperceptible.*
I would suggest picking up one of the Callanetics tapes (or DVD's) in addition to this book, just to make sure you get a feel for things. Once you have it down, and are willing to commit to 2 hours a week, the results will positively amaze you.

Excellent.......2007-08-12
I think that this is an excellent exercise book, however I would not pay the ridiculous amounts asked for on the after market. You can find these books at resale shops and secondhand stores for as little as fifty cents or less. Look around they are out there.

Book Description
Todd English soared to stardom in the culinary world with his distinctive style of layering flavors and textures, a style that has made his restaurants, and the cookbooks that feature his dishes, so popular. The philosophy for the desserts served at Olives is the same as that for the entrées: "We like to pull things out of the country and dress them up," says Todd. "We take very simple things and layer them together to compose a more complex dish." The result? Desserts that are always more than the sum of their parts, combining familiar and comfortable flavors in unique and unexpected ways. Extravagant creations such as Mango Tarte Tatin with Pastry Cream and Chocolate Pastry; Apple-Topped Gingerbread with Hot Applesauce and Cinnamon Ice Cream; Butterscotch Pudding in a Chocolate Crumb Crust with Fudge-Topped Toffee Cookies and Chocolate Lace Cigarettes; Blue Cheese Danish with Port-Poached Pears; Cranberry-Lime Sorbet with Walnut Rugelach; Double Chocolate Soufflé with Deep, Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Chocolate Anglaise. Best of all, each of the 43 spectacular desserts featured is made up of building block recipes (more than 145 in all), many of which can be prepared ahead of time, and many that taste great on their own. So you can wow your guests with White Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding with Caramel Semi-Freddo and Boozy Caramel Sauce. Or simply serve your family the best banana bread they'll ever have. No matter which option you choose, the results will be extraordinary.
Amazon.com
Be forewarned: Once you present a dessert from this book--say, Black-Bottomed Crème Brûlée with Chewy Chocolate-Chip Cookies and Chocolate Sauce or maybe Blueberry Lime Tart with Sweet Coconut Crumble and Blueberry Sorbet--you will earn a reputation as a fabulous dessert chef and will be required, for the rest of your life, to serve amazing after-dinner treats. Luckily, The Olives Dessert Cart has 140 more recipes from which to choose.
This is not a cookbook for those fearful of fat or short on time. It's for those who love the challenge and the sweet, rich reward of homemade butterscotch pudding or a double chocolate soufflé. A popular and respected restaurant originating in Boston, Olives has gained a well-deserved reputation across the country. Chef-owner Todd English and pastry chef Paige Retus have produced The Olives Dessert Cart with cowriter Sally Sampson to bring their incredible creations to the public (no reservations needed). The secret to their desserts, says English, is to "take very simple, often very common things and layer them together to compose a more complex dish." Apple-Topped Gingerbread with Hot Applesauce and Cinnamon Ice Cream is an example of a dessert that's homey, comforting, and yet fancy enough to serve at a dinner party.
These desserts, assembled from one anchoring item with several complementing layers, are striking both in their flavor combinations and in their presentations. Plenty of photos adorn the recipes so you can see what the finished product should look like. But don't worry: You can also make simple Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Chocolate Cake and skip the accompaniments. Throughout the book, several recipes are repeated so you don't have to flip back and forth searching for a crème anglaise recipe or how to make raspberry crush--an innovation other cookbooks should adopt. --Dana Van Nest

The best dessert cookbook ever.......2006-03-14
This is my FAVORITE dessert cookbook. Every single thing I have made from this cookbook has turned out amazing. I love that all the recipes have multiple parts to them so I can choose just to make Banana Bread for Breakfast or I can make White Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding with Caramel Semi Fredo and Boozy Caramel Sauce (my favorite recipie so far) for a dinner party. The cookbook also gives beautiful pictures and lots of details to make sure that you do it right. Be careful though- I am now the required to make the dessert every Thanksgiving!

Book Description
This collection of men’s sweater projects presents classic designs and trendy fashion-forward pieces, forgoing the stereotypical Mr. Rogers and Bill Cosby variety of sweater. Offering tips for overcoming men’s reluctance to wear sweaters, this book provides the tools needed for making the right choices in fit, color, texture, and style to create beautiful, masculine knitted sweaters. Explored are how to understand his personal style and which colors and textures flatter particular physiques so that the sweater will be both enjoyable to knit and a favorite to wear. Patterns for Arans, Argyle, basket case, and cable rib are included for knitting cardigans, pullovers, V-necks, vests, and accessories such as scarves and gloves. Although intended for men, these sweaters have great unisex appeal and were developed for both new and seasoned knitters.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent patterns that guys really do like!.......2007-04-14
I bought this book looking for an aran pattern that my husband would like. Most patterns are made for thin guys and my husband has an athletic frame. With the instructions in this book I was able to adjust the fit to his frame type. I knit him a sweater and it is now his favorite and he wears it all the time. He even asked if I could knit him another sweater from the book.
Patterns Your Man Will Love.......2007-04-04
Knitters will enjoy crafting sweaters the man in their life will actually wear. Ban the boyfriend sweater curse forever!
hubby says he really will wear them!.......2007-01-25
Ok - so flip past the insutling first chapters and get to the patterns. There really are sweaters he would wear and yes, several he wouldn't wear. For one the cover sweater is a definite yes - he loves the casual rolled edges with the masculine fisherman cable style. There is another cable pullover that we like, a cabled cardigan much like a favorite that he already owns, and the tre find - three button up vest styles he would wear. He loves vests and I love them on him - but most of the styles on the market are too "older accountant" for him (there are a couple of those yuppy pullovers in here too.) so - there are things he wouldn't wear and I didn't knit -but there are at least 5 patterns maybe 6 that I'll definitely be knitting. There are probably patterns in here that your man (or you if you are the man and the knitter) will wear too.
The patterns in here are so much more man friendly than the other "knitting for your man" or "men who knit" books I've seen out there. These patterns are mostly for your 25 to 50 something man, the demographic that has been sorely missing from knitting patterns. Most knit patterns for men are either for the young and overly hip emo band member - or the older accountant heading for retirement. These men deserve knits too -and they have them. This book however is for the rest of the guys - the man who has a career - hobbies - a family - who wants that sweater he can wear every Saturday until it wears out.
So why only 4 stars? For my taste they could have included more patterns and spent less time telling me how to decide which patterns to knit or what color to use. The answer? simple - ask him to pick the desing, or look at the style of his favorite sweater & make something similar. I found the first few chapters insulting telling you how to choose color, style etc. Please - I know my husband's style (I knew exactly which sweaters he would like - I know his favorite colors. If you don't know this much about a man - maybe it's too early in the relationship to be knititng for him.) Yes - I've heard of the boyfriend sweater curse - but see - I'm knitting a sweater and a vest for my husband becuase he's asked for both items and I know his style - but I sitll asked him to pick -and he picked the ones I thought he would.
I still recommend the book - becuase of how hard it is to find sweaters that my husband would want to wear. These are mostly classic stles that won't become dated - but some of them at least - and have stitch patterns that will make them interesting to knit and to wear.
so pleased.......2007-01-18
exactly what i needed to expand my knitting skills!!! as always with amazon it arrived on time and in perfect condition!!!!
A great book, almost foolproof, and really fun, with gorgeous result.......2006-10-11
I have not knit for 25 years, and certainly never did anything like arans in my whole life, but have been able to make the most fantastic pullovers and cardigans for my boyfriend as a result, ones he not only wears, but proudly brags about (and so he should, the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino I use does NOT come cheap!!)At the same time, though, if you are going to take the trouble to do these lovely designs, go for the best yet most practical yarn you can afford. The patterns like the one on the front of the book knit up really well and swiftly if you use your markers and good wool, and don't go for anything too fussy that a guy will balk at-the texture and pattern really does all the work for you to make it gorgeous. I have made sweaters in black, navy, mid blue, charcoal gray, regular gray, and the traditional Irish oatmeal since I bought the book last year. The cardigans and pullovers also are very similar in patterns, strategy, like the diamonds, so once you get the pattern into your head, don't stop, go for another sweater.
The fit is perfect, the instructions clear, for the most part, if you make sure you read the whole thing through before you start the pattern, and make notes to yourself as you go.
Also, I strongly recommend photocopying the pattern several times per panel of the sweater or sleeve, to use as scratch paper, because they are repeating patterns based over like 30 rows or so. With the copies, you can just cross off one row so you don't get lost in the pattern. For the more complicated aran and color work ones, you can even cross them off one stitch at a time if need be.
One other recommendation, if you are going to invest this kind of time and money to create a fab sweater like the ones in this book, if you can find a knit store that will help you finish off the garment professionally, by all means do so. It is really the difference between handmade and exquisite, or homemade and kind of silly.
The chart at the front, what is your guys style, and match it to the pattern, is really the best part of the book! Now I have to knit for my step-dad and brother, they have been so wowed by the sweaters they've seen me making! Enjoy!

Book Description
Once upon a time -- until only half a century ago -- in city and country alike, children grew up mostly outdoors, in close communion with plants and animals, and with a hands-on understanding of how the things upon which daily life depended were grown, made, and used. When they weren't helping with the work of the household, they were exploring their surroundings, on their own or in one another's company, absorbed in the apparently aimless meandering and puttering that have enthralled children from time immemorial.
This unmediated experience of the landscape of childhood was just what nature ordered, Sara Stein says. Drawing upon her observations as daughter, mother, grandmother, and naturalist, she describes how the world unfolds meaningfully before the eyes and fingertips of a child. And using linguistics, biology, anthropology, and psychology, she illuminates the features human nature has wired our species to expect: a place we will explore and come to know intimately; resources that bear on our needs for food, shelter, and manufacture; a chance to develop skills through play; and growing involvement with a community that will need those skills and that will pass along to us, through myth and lore, a way to comprehend the relationship between nature and culture.
By showing us the ecology of childhood as it was meant to be, Stein helps us to understand how the environment with which we have supplanted it has encouraged children to become disappointed and diffident, to grow away from us as they grow up. She also shows us that it is within our grasp to resurrect in our own homes and back yards the essential physical and intellectual environment children need, and she offers dozens of thoughtful suggestions to that end.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Read!.......2005-07-07
I highly enjoyed this book and wish it would be read by all parents. Sadly, the ones who need it the most will be the least likely to pick it up. We live in a time when most people are demanding more schooling, more structure. This book says exactly what I feel, only much more eloquently. Kids who aren't connected to the environment certainly won't grow up to respect and love the Earth. Kids need to have time to "work" beside their parents. They need time for unstructured play. And most of all, they need time outside to learn about and love nature and the outdoors.
Good, but doesn't deliver what the title promises.......2004-03-24
I do recommend this book for its explanation of how we and our children are losing the ties that bind us to each other and our environment and give stability and purpose to our lives. However, from my perspective, Ms. Stein describes the very reasons I have chosen to homeschool, specifically unschool, my children. She gives wonderful examples of how things are falling apart, but very limited explanations as to how to put them back together. She is dismissive of homeschooling, saying it is too much work for most people. Having met homeschoolers from a wide variety of incomes and educational backgrounds, the tie that binds them is that they all feel that the family is primarily responsible for raising the child. It is work, to be sure, but the rewards are great. Unschoolers in particular focus on building the connections between adults and children, placing learning in context, in the real world, not just in books. Children don't always need teachers with PhD's, high tech gadgets, and the latest "stuff" - they need time with their parents and other adults to just "be". Be a part of everyday activities, see their place, see their worth, build connections. Noah's Garden and Planting Noah's Garden were much more well-rounded books. If you really want to know more about restoring the ecology of childhood, check out Life Learning magazine and Unschooling.com.
Inspiring, a joy to read.......2003-08-30
I can't recommend this book too highly. It was very easy to read, very entertaining, but don't mistake it, it packs a powerful message of loss and of hope. Loss of much of the natural world that should be our children's heritage & birthright to explore and enjoy. Hope in the suggestions she gives for ameliorating this situation. Any parent or prospective parent will benefit enormously from this book, as well as anyone who loves & cares about the world around us.
Book Description
The illustrated account of the Group of Seven leader.
Lawren Harris was born into the enviable position of having the means to fully devote his life to his art. He was also born with vision, determination, and talent. As a result, Harris became the driving force and leading proponent of the Group of Seven. He was also an accomplished artist who captured the unique magnificence of Canadian life and landscape.
Born into the wealthy Harris family (of the Massey-Harris farm machinery company), Lawren was able to study art in Berlin and absorb the rich European art culture. Returning to Canada at 19, Harris quickly established himself as both an exciting new artist and the supporter of his fellow Canadian artists. Lawren became a founding member of the influential Arts and Letters Club in Toronto. He also purchased the now-famous studio on Severn Street to share with his friends and outfitted a railcar as a studio/living space that they used to tour Northern Ontario.
The art of Lawren Harris articulates a relentless enthusiasm for the Canadian North and his deeply-held spiritual beliefs. He constantly experimented with and explored the limits of his art. Though starting with a naturalistic approach, he eventually progressed to capturing more stylized expressions.
In this illustrated introduction to Harris's work, Joan Murray speaks eloquently about his art, life, and legacy. She traces his artistic development through the study of his paintings, drawing a lively picture of this energetic and charismatic individual who contributed so much to Canadian art.
