Book Description
Whenever he left the hospital, he stopped taking the heavy doses of tranquilizers and other mood-altering drugs. They relieved his ever-growing sadness, but only by making it impossible for him to feel anything at all. Toward his life’s end he would describe his state of mind at this time as “being caught in a nightmare,” one that began during his military service—got worse as the post-war years went by—and abated, finally, as old age arrived. But during his thirties and forties, his gypsy years, he had no words to describe what was happening to him.—From Chapter 6
Customer Reviews:
A very touching, heartwarming story!.......2003-04-13
Jimmy was a clam digger from Maine who joined the Military before Pearl Harbor and was present on December 7th, 1941. This is a story of a man who suffered and the love of his family. He experienced extreme medical problems from Malaria and overwhelming bouts of depression. The account of Jimmy's life is sad, but uplifting. This father had faith like we all wish we could have.
'Love Jimmy: A Main Veterans Longest Battle' is a true love story; the story of the love a daughter has for her father. As you read, your tears will swell then dry up, and a smile will crease your face - all for the love of a family.
Ms. Osier writes a very touching, heartwarming story. This is one you will want to read.
Reviewed by award-winning author, Bobby Ruble, author of Have No Mercy and co-author with wife, Kam, of Black Rosebud: Have No Mercy II.
You are in for a pleasant surprise!.......2003-02-26
"If you hear a book described as a memoir, and think "Mommy, Dearest" and groan, you are in for a pleasant surprise. "Love, Jimmy: A Maine Veteran's Longest Battle" by Nina M. Osier is not a sarcastic book written for revenge. Rather, it is a lovingly detailed book about the author's father who came home from battle in World War Two only to battle depression for the rest of his life. Set in the town of Friendship on the coast of Maine, the book tells the life of a clam digger struggling to make ends meet. And yet, this is not a book of sorrow for a wasted life. It is a celebration of the man, exactly as he was. The riches forged of that life live on, in the talented author, Nina M. Osier. Well worth the read."

Customer Reviews:
How Science Works in Totatitarian Society.......2007-08-14
I recommend this book get a sample of what science is like in a totalitarian society. I grew up in the USSR, and I visited IKI in the middle of 1980s as a lead engineer from a lab that developed waveguide systems for IKI. Everything was secret and KGB guards were everywhere, but we were able to carry out documents and materials for waveguide systems in our pockets. Sagdeev's account of events is quite interesting since he can tell how things were in the USSR without being afraid for his life and well-being any more. I wish he talked more about the scientific side rather than politics.
Science at the other side of the iron curtain........1998-05-05
We are used to read about science in Europe or America, but this book refers to the knowledge of science in Rusia. How it affects to the politics and how the policts involve in science matters. Very easy to read. It goes from the beginning of the century to the Star War. Personal anectotes of the author with famous russian physicists.
The autobiography of one of the finest people on the planet........1995-12-30
Now that the madness of Star Wars *seems* be to behind us,
check out this book. If you thought Regan and E.T. were
nuts, wait til you read about the opposition. History is
gracious-she provides sane leaders at insane moments. Just
about everyone on the planet owes this gentleman big time.
He writes beautifully. The history of Eastern bloc physics
is not well known in the west-this book is the perfect place
to start. One of the sanest, most decent men on the
planet.
Book Description
Today's divorce epidemic reflects the rise of many social forces that can pull even the happiest couple apart. In fact, many of us hold deeply ingrained attitudes and assumptions that work against long-term marital happiness. From renowned family therapist Dr. William J. Doherty, this book helps couples pinpoint hidden marital problems and take positive steps to stay close and connected every day. Readers learn to break free of such common traps as confusing desires with needs, applying a trade-in-the-old-model consumer mentality to one's own spouse, or becoming overtime parents instead of full-time partners. They get suggestions for creating relationship rituals that stand the test of time; from mundane to celebratory, sexy to silly. For young couples who want to hold tight to happily-ever-after, or longtime marrieds on the brink of breakup, this book shows how to fight back to restore a marriage worth saving.
Customer Reviews:
Superbly helpful.......2007-03-05
I think the most important part of this book was the fundamental hopefulness about what might feel like a hopeless situation.
Highly recommended!!.......2007-01-10
This book should be required reading for all married couples, and even for those engaged or considering marriage so the many pitfalls and misconceptions so prevalent today can be hopefully avoided.
Drop what you're doing and read it!.......2007-01-07
This book is a giant gulp of fresh air. It's easy to read and understand without being simplistic; it's neither gimmicky nor condescending; and the advice and insights within it are sensible and do-able. So much of it rang true that I found myself wondering whether the author has been secretly hanging out at my house. He suggests that we, as a community, try to support each other's marriages, and I plan to start by referring my friends to this book.
Fantastic Book about Marriage!!.......2006-07-03
This book single-handedly turned my marriage around. After many long months of soul-searching and analyzing my marriage, my life, and what I wanted, I stumbled upon this book at the library. Boy, did it open my eyes! Doherty outlines how our society undermines marriages today and how we truly must take back our marriage from the hostile consumer culture. He made me realize that we can't just consider what WE want personally, but rather what is best for the marriage -- there's you and me and then there's the MARRIAGE -- three separate entities. Instead of focusing on what's wrong in the marriage, he helps you realize what's right in the marriage. Things aren't always as bad as we make them out to be in our minds.
This book should be required reading for couples before they tie the knot. We'd probably end up with far fewer divorces. And for anyone who is already in a failing marriage, I highly recommend reading this book. It just may change your thinking... I know it did mine.
A book that will help ANY marriage!!!! .......2005-08-02
I am a graduate student, this book was an assignment that required me to design a marriage enrichments program. So I approached this book with a very critical eye, wanting to find all the pros and cons. With that being said, I loved this book. The author William J. Doherty does an excellent job addressing issues and attitudes in marriage in a way that I have never thought of. The concept of a consumer attitude is a profound idea, and better yet it makes sense. The book is well written (but on a level that anyone can read and understand), with great examples, and ideas to apply the concepts presented in this book. This is a book that everyone should read; it is not just for marriages that are struggling. I feel that I have a very healthy and happy marriage, yet this book has helped me improve a relationship that I thought did not need improvement. It can also help newly weds who are juts starting out on their journey together. Over all this is a great book that will help any marriage as much as the reader is willing to allow it.

Author Sarah Schlesinger first began developing fat-free recipes after her husband's multiple-bypass surgery. Driven by the dearth of healthful, tasty foods on the market and in restaurants, she began compiling delicious, simple-to-prepare recipes with one gram of fat or less. 500 More Fat Free Recipes, Schlesinger's ninth book, is a complete resource for fat-free cooking, for every meal of the day. The recipes blend a wide range of exotic ingredients such as rose water, kale and couscous, with more commonplace ones like potatoes and peppers. The result is a cornucopia of savory, unique dishes: from Baked Onion Rings to Lemon-Blueberry Sorbet, or Cucumber Raita to Pear-Ginger Quick Bread. Each recipe includes easy-to-follow cooking instructions and a nutritional chart showing calories, fat, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and sodium. Particularly helpful are the preparation times: Portobello Sauce and Papaya-Mango Kabobs take 20 minutes or less to prepare, while Creamy Tomato-Bean Risotto takes longer but is well worth the wait. Also included are several pages of tips for equipping a fat-free kitchen. The only problem you'll have with this book is deciding which of these exciting recipes to try first! --Jhana Bach
Book Description
While more and more Americans are discovering the health benefits of a low-fat diet, the thousands of cooks who made 500 Fat-Free Recipes a bestseller and a classic on fat-free cooking are also enjoying the rich flavors Sarah Schlesinger brings to fat-free meals. With 500 More Fat-Free Recipes, Schlesinger has created an even more diverse collection that should make every meal of the day a healthy and delicious success.
Beginning with a much expanded list of ingredients--reflecting the greater variety of foods now available on supermarket shelves--Schlesinger has drawn inspiration from cuisines around the world--Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian, and more. Wonderful, often underused flavors like curry, lemongrass, fresh ginger, rose water, and balsamic and wine vinegars brighten dishes that are a far cry from the bland, repetitive meals people often associate with the restrictions of fat-free cooking. Who would imagine that dishes like these have only one gram of fat or less per serving?: Persian Apple-sauce, flavored with rose water and mint; Cardamom-Ginger Cantaloupe; Cold Carrot Soup with Thyme; Cucumbers with Horseradish; Wild Rice-Red Grape Salad; Curried Lentils and Rice; Baked Ziti, rich with roasted red peppers, eggplant, and mushrooms; Cannellini Beans with Shells and Sage; Spinach-Topped Crostini; Papaya Sorbet; and Molasses Cake.
Schlesinger makes steamed dumplings with wonton wrappers, and blends blueberries and seltzer water to make a frozen fruit ice. Robust vegetable stews are made more interesting with barley, bulgur, and couscous. She moistens and enriches cake batter with prune purée in place of butter or shortening and makes crumb crusts from fat-free cookies. And in her variation on chocolate-covered strawberries, cocoa powder, which has no fat, replaces the melted chocolate.
This fresh and wonderful collection is a celebration of the foods we can eat on a fat-free diet, and its five hundred dishes guarantee that every day will bring meals that are healthy and full of great tastes.
Customer Reviews:
It is helping me loose weight!.......2000-04-23
I brought this book a year ago and I finally tried some of the recipes. What I found was great tasting food, fewer calories, and just about no fat. I found some dishes exotic as well as simple. My only disappointment is when it show how much was taken in, nothing show the amount/% of sugar. To me sugar is almost as bad as fat. Besides that I'm thrilled about this book and what it has done for me!
Nice recipes... but no pictures........2000-02-04
I enjoyed browsing through this book and don't regret buying it. But I am the type that is more motivated to try a new recipe if I can see a picture... and there aren't any in this book. I have a feeling this is one of those that will just sit on my bookshelf.

Book Description
In this major book, leading practitioner Pamela Hannay provides a photographic guide to communication, health, and healing through shiatsu.
Customer Reviews:
From The Inside Flap:.......2005-10-24
Shiatsu is a gentle, deeply effective holistic system of health care. It comes from Asia and has been developing for over 5000 years. A sister therapy to acupuncture, it employs finger pressure to gently stimulate the body's natural healing ability. Touch is also an extremely important method of communication between individuals of one species and between species, and horses are particularly responsive to both the healing and the communicating touch of Shiatsu.
Many of the techniques that Pamela Hannay demonstrates in this book are simple, can be learned quickly and are easy to apply. They are safe because they require only the application of the hands in a gentle and natural way. They treat physical problems and those of emotional pain and stress. The author emphasizes the importance of self preparation for the practitioner and shows how meditation can help develop an understanding of how a horse thinks and feels. Among the many benefits of this therapy are:
- Early recognition and treatment of problems before they escalate.
- Treatment and elimination of musculo-skeletal problems including stiffness and some forms of chronic lameness.
- Maintenance of suppleness thus reducing susceptibility to injury.
- Maximizing physical potential.
- Activating the immune system.
- Stimulating circulation, the nervous system and the release of hormones.
- Relaxing and energizing the horse and promoting a feeling of wellbeing.
- Establishing and deepening communication between horse and rider.

No hoof no horse.......2003-08-06
I LOVE the allen guides! What better way to learn than to get right in there and see it. Sure its not the same as shoeing thousands of horses or picking out the feet of millions but this is second best. A picture is worth a thousand words. And if you're a pre-vet student or a bacyard horse owner you should really know all there is to know about your horses' entire base of being- his feet! This book makes it enjoyable and educational too!

Customer Reviews:
No craft projects.......2007-04-24
I was so disappointed by this book. There are a lot of pretty pictures but hardly any actual craft projects. It's more of a display of the author's and her mother's private Christmas decoration collection. The book gave me one or two ideas but all in all was not worth the money. I regret buying this book.
Some ideas.......2007-01-19
I was anticipating this book to be full of vintage Xmas like the title says but instead most of the items are new! Except for the final chapter by Debbie Dusenberry and her store Curious Sofa. This was a chapter worth buying the book for. Great photography, ideas and display from her. She should have had more chapters or maybe a book of her own.
Vintage Christmas Crafts.......2007-01-15
I had seen the book in the book store. I bought it for a friend. I liked it so well I bought one for myself. Got it cheaper through Amazon.
very few crafts to make.......2006-11-05
This book has nice pictures, which might inspire you with some new ideas for arranging your Christmas items, or give you some ideas for things to purchase. But the majority of objects shown are uncredited, so you might have difficulty with even that. There are only a handful of actual projects to make, and these are certainly not the most attractive objects pictured. Not worth buying, in my opinion.
Vintage Christmas Crafts.......2006-08-30
I was hoping to find some new Christmas crafts to use for decorating this year. I was a bit dissapointed to see that most of the crafts were ones that I've already seen in some older books. I was hoping to get some new ideas. The way the decorations were set up in the book inspired me, though. The rooms looked like an old-fashioned Christmas from my childhood.

Book Description
Dreams of pregnancy include the expectation that nine months of waiting will end with a joyous event. But, each year, a "shattered dream" occurs for thousands of couples who receive the news that their child will have a disabling condition severe enough that they may question if they are the best parents for their child. Societal expectation is that parents will raise their child or, if the condition of the child is detected prenatally, abortion is offered as an alternative. Parents who explore other options face scrutiny and, sometimes, condemnation--"lonely choices." Joanne Finnegan shares her personal experience and that of several families she interviewed who, like herself, explored options other than raising their child with a disability. Parents express with candor the overwhelming pain they felt when receiving "the news," the frustration when searching for options, the "no-win" feeling of decision making, the resolve with a final decision, and finally, life after the decision. Parent quotes also address issues such as spiritual dilemmas and interactions with friends, family, their other children, and medical professionals. Words of advice for new parents include how to build support systems and gather information, how to search for an adoptive family, and arranging the details of communication between adoptive and birth parents. Interviews with adoptive parents, poetry, and extensive resource lists complete the book. Written as a gift for other parents to help them cope with the pain and loneliness of decision making, this book will also be a valuable resource for medical professionals, adoption and social workers, counselors and spiritual advisors, and friends and family of the parents. It is a helpful as well as a deeply therapeutic book, providing a strong lesson in how to manage during this stressful time, from receiving "the news" about the baby's condition and prognosis, to weighing the factors involved in the various decisions. Should one take the baby home from the hospital? If not home, then where? Foster care, respite care, guardianship, and other forms of substitute care are mentioned. The author also examines decisions about finances and support services, family issues, finalizing an adoption plan, living with the decision, regrets, and future pregnancies.

Seeking the Spiritual: The Paintings of Marsden Hartley
ASIN: 1570034788 |
Book Description
A collection of previously unpublished correspondence between American artist Marsden Hartley and avant-garde impresario and photographer Alfred Stieglitz, My Dear Stieglitz chronicles a painter's three-year-plus European pilgrimage before--and during the inception of--World War I. Beginning with Hartley's 1912 arrival in Paris, his letters to Stieglitz from this pioneering capital of modern art and world culture provide sweeping accounts of Gertrude Stein's salons, gossip of Montparnasse cafés filled with poets, writers, artists, and composers, and commentary on paintings by Picasso, Cézanne, and Matisse. Searching for social acceptance as well as artistic growth and inspiration, Hartley reports to Stieglitz on leading galleries such as Ambroise Vollard, Bernheim-Jeune, and Paul Durand-Ruel, while finding solace in art at the Musée du Louvre.
From Germany in early 1913, Hartley writes vibrant letters about the Expressionist artists in Munich, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and their group Der Blaue Reiter. Hartley's missives quickly become up-to-the-minute exposés on avant-garde trends in Germany with childlike lamentations over the bustling, modern city of Berlin. His glory in Germany turns solemn with the onset of World War I and the death of his close friend, a German officer named Karl von Freyburg--a loss vividly depicted in Hartley's renowned war motif paintings from this period. Steiglitz's correspondence from New York gives an American point of view of a war in Europe and chronicles exhibitions at "291," his own gallery for modern art. Although Stieglitz's letters are less personal than Hartley's, he shows subtle signs of resentment toward the famous 1913 Armory Show, which usurped his reign over modernism in America.
Closing in late 1915 with Hartley's return to an America filled with anti-German sentiment and a New York seasoned by the influx of modern art, My Dear Stieglitz provides an intimate perspective on modern art and the human condition during the tempestuous years of the early twentieth century.

Super collection of letters!.......2002-12-18
I loved this collection of letters because the correspondence is so succint, complete, and filled with emotion and drama. The letters really gave me a sense of what the artist was going through at this time in his life.
Also, the editor did a great job with the appendices and the footnotes - they are as entertaining and informative as the letters themselves.
