Book Description
John A. McClernand was a leading Democratic congressman from Illinois, who, in 1861, became a brigadier general in the Union army. Although a political general, McClernand proved himself on the battlefield until he ran afoul of Ulysses S. Grant and was relieved of his command in 1863 during the Vicksburg Campaign. Richard Kiper presents a balanced and sympathetic assessment of this highly controversial individual who served his country as a soldier and a statesman.
Customer Reviews:
Well Done Look at an Important Civil War Era Figure.......2006-07-07
While best known to Civil War buffs for his feuding with Grant, John Alexander McClernand remains an important second tier figure in the effort to preserve the Union.
Richard Kiper helps shed some light on this obscure politican in uniform and offers new appreciation for his services. While Kiper rightfully shows McClernand as something of a blowhard who had little use with the chain of command, the biographer also argues that the Illinois general deserves better than to be lumped in with failed political generals like Nathaniel Banks and Ben Butler. While not uncritical of his subject's military leadership, Kiper presents a strong case that as recruiter, organizer and, even as a battlefield commander, McClernand proved a solid and brave soldier. Kiper also brings some light on his subject's military career after being removed by Grant, offering insight on McClernand's role in the Trans-Mississippi in 1864.
This is not to say that Kiper provides a definitive biogrpahy of McClernand. McClernand's important role as one of Stephen Douglas's chief lieutenants in Illinois and in the U.S. House is lightly skimmed over. McClernand played an important role in the Compromise of 1850 and the shattering of the Democratic Party, from the Buchanan-Douglas showdown to the 1860 presidential convention in Charleston. McClernand also played a leading role in the compromise debates in the 1860-61 congressional section. He even played a fairly prominent role in the post-bellum Democratic Party. All of this Kiper glosses over. While the focus of the book is on McClernand's military career, there should have been a bit more focus on his political career as well, especially as the subject remained, despite his talents, more of a candidate than a military leader. Despite that flaw, this remains a very good look at an important, and unfairly neglected, leader in the Civil War.
Long Overdue.......2000-10-12
Kiper has written a long overdue account of a general who fell through the Civil War cracks. Solid understanding, impeccable research, fluid writing = biography at its best.
The Best Military Biography I've Read.......2000-10-12
Rich Kiper has written a biography of a little-known personality, John Alexander McClernand, that is a lesson for soldiers who may be tempted to politick and for politicians who may be tempted to "play soldier." This book is an objective and balanced description of the period when the Union Army was suffering from the drain of military talent to the South and "politicians in uniform" were a national necessity. In spite of an abject lack of military training and experience, McClernand did perform remarkably well while preparing troops for combat and while leading them in the field. While he used his political clout to organize, train and equip the soldiers of his brigade, McClernand's tendency to be self-serving and critical of his superiors (to their superiors!) ultimately outweighed his usefulness and hastened his relief by Grant. John McClernand's nemeses included Generals Ulysses Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and, most notably, John McClernand himself. This book was written from a soldier's perspective and can be read and appreciated by soldiers and civilians alike.
Book Description
The Beat of a Different Drum is the definitive account of Feynman's life and work. It covers his childhood, his three marriages, and his extraordinary range of interests. But most importantly, it deals in great detail with his scientific work - from his research on the atomic bomb, via his famous path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, to the quantum theory of gravitation, partons, quark jets, and the limits of computation. This is the only book to show the full range and depth of Feynman's work in physics and it is written from a unique perspective. Jagdish Mehra knew Richard Feynman personally for thirty years and was invited by Feynman to interview him and encouraged to write this account of those interviews.
Customer Reviews:
The Science and Life -- in that order.......2006-10-16
There are two type of reviews of this book. Those who were interested in the man from a personal, non science perspective and those who know science, are interested and can read and understand Feynman's scientific work. Those who interested in the more entertaining books on Feynman, e.g., Gleick, and some of Feynman's own books should tread on this book lightly for it includes mathematical and scientific analysis you cannot get from the other books. On the other hand, Jagdish Medra does an excellent job in reciting some of the personal stuff between him and his father, which were crucial in forming both Feynman's personal and scientific personality. This is the only book you will get that. Mehra did not include some of the more interesting andecotes that are in Feynman's books, so it is not a complete biography despite its length and breath. If you are interested in some of Feynman's reasons for his ideas and the context of those ideas, then you must read this book. If you are not interested, for example, in Maupertuis, Lagrange, Hamilton ideas on minimum action -- you might have to skip large parts of the book because Mehra recounts Feynman's ideas in detail (including all his equations).
I have found the best way to understand science and personality (Feynman was of a temperament Inventor Rational) is to read detailed biographies of the principles -- Jagdish Mehra did excellent job with this biography, you can pick up the other details of Feynman in his own books. I am sure Richard would give Mehra five stars.
An awful compendium.......2001-12-08
The book is already out of print, which perhaps indicates a
collective wisdom of the technical readership. As others (e.g.,
"zero stars") have pointed out, this is a carelessly compiled
assortment of facts. And it is too bad, because Feynman
deserves a fine technical biography. There do exist
excellent books on Feynman's life and work. Gleick's "Genius"
is a masterful personal biography (Gleick is a fine writer
for the technically literate; e.g., see his "Chaos").
Schweber's "QED and the men who made it" is an excellent
historical presentation of QED, in which of course Feynman
plays a major role. But Mehra's book fails in all aspects.
In particular, the technical parts are disorganized and
full of errors. I gave up half way through the book in disgust.
Feynman's technical work went well beyond QED and
the introduction of path integral methods. It was
so broad that few scientific biographers could have done
it justice. Mehra failed. Pais didn't try.
Schweber has covered Feynman's early contributions well.
But there is much good writing on (and by) Feynman.
If you want to know more about Feynman's life and personality,
see "Genius", along with Ralph Leighton's wonderful 2-volume
retelling of Feynman's stories and his "Tuva or Bust".
Also, see the 1990 memorial issue of Physics Today, devoted to
his work style and relationships with his colleagues.
Feynman was often described as a "teacher's teacher," and
the 3 volume "Lectures" demonstrate that well. Feynman's
no-nonsense, intuitive approach also comes out in his
1960-era monographs "Quantum Electrodynamics" and "Theory of
Fundamental Processes", which, though written before
the Standard Model, still give a fine introduction to relativistic quantum mechanics.
Great, but only for a certain audience.......2001-08-05
Jagdish Mehra is, to be sure, not one of the great literary stylists, and his notion of historical writing is to throw in every available fact and save evaluation and historical analysis for a later date. Fair enough, I say: his is not the final word on Feynman, nor does he think so. Feynman's contribution to Quantum Electrodynamics is the central problem for any real biographer, and here Mehra is on stronger grounds. By its very nature, the book is steeped in math, and you will need to be up on calculus and Fourier expansions, not to mention the basic points of QED to read it with profit. It is good, solid history of science, but hardly a page-flipper for reading on the beach this summer.
Very detailed bio of a great physicist.......2000-03-27
I read this book about Feynman with great interest and I found it better than Gleick's book. Some people might not like the amount of detailed info about all sorts of Feynman trivia but how can a true fan of his not be delighted with all this great stuff! The technical parts are very thorough and detailed; it was well beyond anything you find in "popular" books like Gleick's. In that sense this is not really for general readers but there is enough interesting stuff for the interested layman too. I highly recommend this very thoroughly researched masterpiece!
Surely you are joking !.......2000-01-01
I am writing in response to the "zero star"review from from an unidentifiable source in Redondo Beach ,Ca. and some seconding chimpanzee in Sydney,Australia. Firstly , you are not "a physicist too" ! You can't even understand the mathematical representation of Feynman's science .Dr. Mehra is a physicist who has intimate first hand knowledge of all aspects of the history of quantum theory. Mr Redondo is probably confusing "physicist" with "physical therapist". A word of advice to Redondoman : Learn the Science;learn the value of details;learn the English language and when you lecture at Oxford "too" then you "too" will appreciate the specificity of carefully researched and personally corroborated biography [quite unlike the James Gleick general, sophomoric, second hand effort]. Redondoman you and the Sydney Chimp are "too" AWFUL to dignify further discussion . Dr. Mehra has produced a prodigious quantity and profound quality of work. Read it !

Book Description
A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO THE CHALLENGES OF BODY SHAPE, APPLES & PEARS PRESENTS WEIGHT LOSS AND WELLNESS SOLUTIONS THAT ARE PRACTICAL...AND, ABOVE ALL, POSSIBLE.
Understand what body shape means, how it is formed, how it changes, and how it relates to your health. Learn why all fat is not created equal. Discover the Elite foods that help protect against disease, promote general wellness, and improve your odds of shedding fat. Find out why the human body is not designed to give up weight easily -- and learn what you can do to lose more weight with less effort. Change the way you relate to your body forever. Acquire the tools you need to make conscious, informed, healthy choices about food while still living in the real world. Throw away your scale and get out of the cycle of diet failure. No more fads. No more confusion.
When it comes to your health, body shape really does matter! Chances are you already know if you're an apple or a pear. If you tend to gain weight in your belly and back, you're an apple. If your thighs and derriere are the canvas on which your snack food sins are written, then you're a pear. But what does it matter? Gut or butt, too much is too much, right? Wrong!
Whether you are an apple-shaped or pear-shaped woman determines far more than whether you select a swimsuit with a waist-whittling pattern or a thigh-hiding skirt. According to medical pioneer Marie Savard, M.D., your body shape is the single most powerful predictor of future health. It is connected to differences in your physical chemistry, hormone production, and metabolism and directly affects your likelihood for obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, stroke, varicose veins, and certain cancers.
Your body shape may be putting your health in danger through no fault of your own. But there is good news: There are things you can do to prevent or even reverse the risks of body shape. Apples & Pears: The Body Shape Solution for Weight Loss and Wellness offers women of all shapes and sizes specific nutritional and exercise recommendations based on body type. So much more than just another diet book, Apples & Pears teaches you exactly what you need to do to sidestep the physical and emotional pitfalls of body shape in order to live longer, lose weight, and feel healthier.
Customer Reviews:
Cutting edge information.......2007-06-27
Excellent information, easy to read and understand. I am a nurse who stays up on current research, and this information is cutting edge evidence based! This book is filled with practical advice for applying the information to improve your health (by reducing your risk factors)
Dr. Savard actively promotes patient advocacy and this book gives very clear advice about approaching your doctor about your health concerns, while informing you about what your concerns should be.
What I especially love is that she describes the research in terms that the average person can understand which helps the average person make up their own minds on what the research means.
Apples won't find this book too encouraging .......2006-06-17
If you're an apple shape you won't feel very good about yourself after reading this book. The book goes into detail about all the various apple related health problems - cardiovascular, reproductive, even psychological (apparently, apple shapes suffer from more stress and depression - yet pear shapes suffer from more body image problems?!?) Additionally, there seemed to be a lot of words of encouragement for pears and virtually none for apples - and since apples are apparently at such a higher risk for all of these unpleasant conditions (again, everything from psycholgical to hormonal to vascular) aren't we the ones that need the words of encouragement? It didn't make me feel too good to read that even if I lose as much weight as I possibly can (and do it in the healthiest manner possible), I'm still an apple shape and therefore still at a higher risk for the above said problems. I find that hard to believe.
If you're pear shaped and don't like your body, read this book - I guarantee you'll feel better about yourself after. If you're apple shaped, DO NOT read this book. It will only make you feel worse. If you're an apple who has struggled with your weight for years (like me) you most likely know that carrying excess weight around your middle is not healthy - you don't need to read a whole book devoted to explaining how bad it is.
If you're an apple shape looking for advice on whittling your waistline, read The Abs Diet instead.
Great Weight Loss & Wellness Solutions.......2006-05-18
This book was such an easy read that it was fun. The tips are simple and easy to implement in your everyday life. Most of all there is no measuring. I have been following the meal suggestions for about 3 weeks and have seen a tremendous difference. I am seeing my waistline shrink and I am feeling more energetic. I recommend this book for anyone who has tried everything else. The book helped me understand what has and is happening to my once beautiful pear shape. I am exciting to be moving back to the figure and health I once had!
Great book! Great Program!.......2006-05-06
The program in this book is so easy and produces great results. I have been on it for 8 weeks and have lost 3.25 inches around my waist, 7 pounds and lowered my cholesterol by 33 points. It is easy to read and understand with simple charts for knowing what to eat. No more measuring or counting calories. The concept is to concentrate on losing inches instead of pounds for optimal health. I thought that I had no choice but to be a fat apple after gaining 1" in waist size for each pound gained after menapause. I thought this was my heredity and destiny, based on the body shapes of my mother an aunts. Not so, I am finding out. I would highly recommend this book and program to anyone interested in reducing there waist size and having a heart healthy, body.
Life Changing!.......2006-02-27
Apples & Pears has changed my life! I approach food, exercise and health in a new and positive light after reading this book. My eating habits have changed and I have lost weight, but more importantly, I understand for the first time, why and how I have had difficulties in the past losing and keeping weight off. With the insights and well researched wealth of information offered in Dr. Savard's book, I am eating and exercising with a better understanding of how my activities and choices affect my health and well-being. It has also changed how I counsel others -- friends and family members -- about their own eating and exercise habits. Thank you, Dr. Savard! Your book has changed my life -- I feel positive and in control with the understanding and insights I have gained!
Customer Reviews:
Great design... great price.......2003-06-07
This is a great volume of *home cooking* recipes. It has great pictures to help guide you a bit and information on uncommon (in this country) ingredients. I have tried several recipes and while I don't consider them *fast cooking*...what i mean is I wouldnt necessarily start cooking them after a long days work... I don't see them as long or overly invovled.
Once you stock up on the traditional ingredients, flavorings, spices cooking this way is much easier. And much less time consuming... There are a good number of recipes that, once the intitial ingredients are purchased, are very economical (featuring eggs, rice, chicken thighs)
The feel of the book is very good. The pages are smooth and easy to wipe up if you have to, the spine is sturdy (an issue i have with non-spiral cook books) and hasnt broken on me even after two or so years of reading and using. A big plus for a cook book. Excellent quality pictures
Personally, I like more recipes for cook books...i find this book a bit thin. Even so, I think its a great addition to a collection and probably a great first japanese cook book.
Japanese Mom's Home Cooking!.......2003-03-09
My Japanese mother is now elderly and no longer able to cook my favorite dishes, so I needed a Japanese cookbook if I ever wanted to eat homestyle cooking again. This book is wonderful! This is your basic everyday cooking, not fancy restaurant foods (even though they are delicious enough for a restaurant). Recipes are very easy to follow (in addition to helpful hints in preparing them) and there are beautiful color photographs of what the final dish is to look like. I started off with the basics - two different recipes of Japanese pickles - my mother loved them! What better compliment could you ask for!
What I've been looking for!.......2001-02-06
I've lived in Japan for several years and have been looking for a cookery book that could show me how to make simple everyday dishes I've enjoyed so often in Japanese homes. From Niku-jaga (a meat and potato dish) to tempura (vegetables or fish deep-fried in batter) to zoni (soup with rice cakes), not to mention sushi, all the home basics are included here. There are lots of photos showing you both the final product and key steps in preparation. The introductory section also has photos of commonly used basic ingredients such as fresh ginger and wasabi (Japanese horseradish) with tips and explanations on how to prepare and use them in dishes. A practical, well-thought out book.
Authentic Recipies translated into english.......2000-10-13
This cookbook was NOT written for the US market, it is a Japanese cookbook written by the Japanese version of home and garden translated. None of the tastes are modified to the US palet. If you want REAL Japanese food, this is the book for you.

"...not to be missed if you are planning a water garden. The design elements are superior to most how-to books on the topic...streams rather than just single ponds [are a] way to join the move toward naturalism."--American Horticulturist. 128 pages, 40 color illus., 30 b/w illus., 7 1/2 x 9 3/4.

The Stream Garden.......2000-04-06
The Stream Garden is a truly inspirational book designed to help the gardener design and create a stream garden. The photographs are superb and excellent examples. Clear direction is given for building the stream and there are plenty of plant suggestions to make the stream look natural. This book complements Water in the Garden by James Allison - which in my opinion is the best pond book on the market. Both of these books combine inspirational photographs with practical knowledgeable directions.

Are you missing a tooth? Several teeth? If so, perhaps you’re like many individuals—you already wear a bridge or dentures or are considering them. But have you considered dental implants? They are “permanent teeth” that are inserted into the jawbone and function like natural teeth. They offer a more natural appearance and greater comfort than bridges or dentures.
Although the trend toward dental implants is growing rapidly, you, like many consumers, may not fully understand how they work. The doctors who wrote this book recognized the need for consumer information. All specialists in dental implants, they provide answers to such questions as:
• What are the benefits of dental implants?
• Who is a candidate for dental implants?
• How are the implants inserted?
• Are the procedures painful?
• How long do implants last?
• Are there risks or possible complications?
• How do you choose a qualified dentist or specialist?
• What follow-up care is required?
Your Complete Guide to Dental Implants

Concise, Unbiased Information.......2005-08-29
This book provides a very useful guide for patients contemplating dental implants. It is clearly written, printed in large typeface and gives just the right amount of information to help potential implant patients make up their minds.
However, I find the book cover a bit too thin. It keeps curling up and the 4 pages of colour photos seem like the colour separator didn't do a very good job. I would still recommend that my patients read the book for its great content.
Very informative.......2003-06-16
I had a general idea about how dental implants work, but this book really educated me. If you're thinking about implants, this book will really help you understand what to expect. Easy to read and understand.
The only book you'll need to read on the subject.......2003-06-15
I have heard so much about dental implants in the past few years, with more people asking for them, and more dentists offering them. I have a crown that really should be replaced, and I wanted to get an implant. This seemed like the best book to read on the subject, based on the title, so I got a copy. It's everything the title says. Easy to understand, a quick read and a thorough explanation ... in language that I can understand. Thinking about implants? Read this book!

Gorgeous work, beautifully written and illustrated.......1999-06-21
A tremendously satisfying volume that straddles art history, political history, and civil war remembrance, written by a descendant of Vinnie Ream. Copiously illustrated with a compelling narrative set in a first-class book design. A pleasure to read, view and touch.

This is the story of William N. Donovan, a U.S. Army medical officer in the Philippines who, as a prisoner of war, faced unspeakable conditions and abuse in Japanese camps during World War II. Through his own words we learn of the brutality, starvation, a
Customer Reviews:
It's a page-turner; I read it in one sitting........2000-02-13
Overall, it's a fine book, and I'm glad I read it. The maps were very helpful, as were the introductions to each chapter that put Dr. Donovan's experiences in the larger context of events. But I have some beefs: (1) It *sounds* like an old man telling the story. Even if the authors had not disclosed this, you could still tell because Dr. Donovan telescopes interesting details & stories in the way old men often do. My other concern about this oral history is the 50 year delay between the events and the re-telling, as time selects memories and the hard edge comes off the stories. (2) The chapter on the home front was uninteresting. The wife's experience seems little different from the thousands of wives of POWs/MIAs in the history of warfare. I did like the "stopped bumping" description, though. :-) (3) It would have been nice to have at least a paragraph or two on how the author's war experiences affected his post-war life. What are the long-term effects of experiences like this? 50 years of hindsight would have been valuable in this regard. (4) I'm a military physician, so I was looking for medical details about captivity. I can fully understand why they may have been omitted, however. I can only hope that I never have to endure what Dr. Donovan did, and if I do, that I can measure up with the same courage, skill, and resourcefulness that he displayed.
