charming account of a sailor's introduction to the navy.......2002-08-27
Johnson captures the essence of what it was like to be a woman in the navy in the early 1970's -- having fun, yet encountering obstacles (usually in male form -- crusty old chief, a commanding officer who thinks women should be making babies, cat-calling marines) at every turn. In this autobiographical account, Johnson details her decision to enlist & escape Ohio, her experience at bootcamp, journalism training, her first duty station at NATO's SACLANT headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia (where she made many pots of coffee), her next assignment at Clark Air Base in the Phillipines (where she lived with a fellow sailor & his Filipina wife and children off-base), and her subsequent assignment to an aviation squadron. The tale ends when Johnson decides to apply for Officer Candidate School. Only by reading the book's back cover do I know hat Johnson went on to become a Marine Corps officer -- I wanted the book to continue so I could learn more of her antics. Throughout the book, Johnson describes her relationship with her best friend and shipmate, Lucas, who constantly ribs Johnson about being a "lifer." Like the real navy, Johnson's story isn't all patriotism & spit-shine. She recounts (with great humor) an experience where a female roommate makes a pass at her, gives the lyrics to sexually explicit jodies, and describes an incident where Lucas picks up a nasty little Army sergeant and dumps her in a trash can. The tale is pleasant, humorous, and very easy to read. At times, I found it to be a bit incredible (incidents of blatant sexism and sexual harassment), but then I would guess that much has changed in the Navy and society in the past thirty years.
I would highly recommend this for any female veteran -- anyone who's been there, who has encountered their own version of the evil Sergeant Burke or the lascivious, girlie-tattoed Chief Hatch.
Anchors Aweigh!.......2002-06-28
I read this book in a library several years ago and feared it was
now out of print. I'm SO glad to see the issue of a contemporary paperback.
A balanced account -- and very fun to read. Or re-read.
I'm recommending this book to anyone who's considering joining the military, or anyone who's young and searching for a way to move to a new career without going broke. Or any woman at midlife who wishes she had joined the navy and handled the life as well as Louanne Johnson did.

Glines offer a full and compelling portrait of Bernt Balchen, a leader in Arctic aviation, overshadowed in his lifetime by Admiral Richard Byrd but whose expertise and vision continue to guide trans-Arctic aviation.
Customer Reviews:
From a pleased Norwegian.......2001-09-04
The existing review of this book that appears on the Amazon site is an excellent one that gives great details about the book. All I wanted to say is that as a fellow author, and of Norwegian descent, I regretted every time I had to put this book down.
There is a song by the late Canadian Stan Rogers that includes the line: "Now you know what it is to scale the heights and fall just short of fame, and have not one in ten thousand know your name."
That was written about someone else, but it sure fits in Balchen's case. A man always on the verge of being at least as famous as Admiral Byrd. A man of incredible courage, inventiveness, and grace in the face of hostilities, both of nature and of Byrd himself. This is an awesome biography that ought to be the catalyst for the re-writing of every history textbook. I thank Carrol Glines for making the enormous effort.
A long overdue recognition of a true hero........1999-11-14
Bernt Balchen is perhaps the most underappreciated hero of our times. A master flyer, an artist, a negotiator, and most of all, a soldier, Balchen's unassuming personality belied the fact that he had one of the most fascinating careers in aviation history. Balchen, unfortunately, was the victim of a vendetta by a man for whom he had done much, Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Byrd feared that Balchen would reveal that Byrd's famous first flight over the North Pole was in fact a fraud, and waged a life-long war against Balchen. Glines is a highly skilled biographer (Jimmy Doolittle, Roscoe Turner) and he makes the most of his talents here. His research is excellent, and he portrays Balchen in his true colors as a patriot who fought the Russians with the Finns in the First World War, then conducted clandestine operations with the Norwegian underground in the second. He was the confidant of the great flyers of the era, including Amelia Earhart, and was among the first to be capable of true instrument flight. Bernt Balchen Polar Aviator would make a fantastic movie, for it has everything--exploration, romance, combat, skullduggery, and most of all, heroism. Balchen was a strong, handsome man who would have been an Olympic boxer for Norway if he had not elected to learn to fly with the Norwegian navy. He became an expert in Polar matters, saved many lives, was important during the Cold War, and had thousands of friends who knew just what a hero he was. The United States government, however, allowed Senator Harry Byrd to block Balchen's promotion to general, forcing his retirment, and at one time, deported him! This is a great biography of a great man, done by a great biographer!

Customer Reviews:
The most important part is just being aware that there are differences.......2006-03-08
I wish that everyone would read this book, just to be aware that different cultures have different mores, and if someone is "foreign" to you, their manners may seem very odd. It is necessary not to jump to conclusions. Of course, since so much of communication is non-verbal, it's also difficult not to.
Obviously, one cannot adopt a single set of manners that would suit all people since people often have opposite customs. I worked with one group of people that hated to have money left on the counter, and another that preferred to have money left on the counter, and it was hard to remember to switch. Dresser notes that not all people from one country have the same customs, and as people live in the US for a few generations, they may forget ethnic customs. She tells a story on herself: visiting Hmong-Americans, she insists on removing her shoes, only to find out that the family has dropped that custom. Fortunately, I think most people appreciate the attempt to be polite, even if one stumbles from time to time.
The book is told mainly in the form of anecdotes about cultural miscommunications, with explanations of customs of various societies. After this is a section listing many, although not all individual countries. This is followed by an extensive bibliography and an index.
The index is one of the weakest points of the book. If one wants to use the book to learn customs for a specific group of people, the cross-indexing is erratic. If one is looking for Iranian customs, one also needs to look up Muslim and Middle-Easterners, but there are no cross references for this, although there are for some entries.
A useful book, if one is going to be interacting with a known group of people. Otherwise, at least a reminder that customs vary.
Book Description
The Imus Ranch transports the reader to a unique place that the author and her husband, talk-show host Don Imus, created: a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch set in rolling hills and mesa country 50 miles east of Santa Fe. The children--who have cancer--visit the Imus Ranch and work alongside authentic western ranch hands, learning to ride horses and rope calves. The experience refuels their bodies and their spirits, and they leave stronger than when they came. As Deirdre Imus explains: 'We welcome kids who have known too much sickness and too much death, and we give them something they urgently need: a sense of in-de-pen-dence and purpose through healthy, vigorous living.'

Not vegan.......2007-10-04
This is a great cookbook but...it's not vegan. Many of the recipes contain egg. I was so hopeful to find a whole cookbook dedicated to vegan food. Many of the recipes are wonderful, but the book should not advertise itself as being vegan because it's not.
Magnificent Book.......2007-04-28
My review is simply to express that this book has several meanings. It is truly an "American" book. The quality from the moment you touch it is so impressive. You open it and scan the beautiful pictures within. One is touched by their beauty. You begin to read and realize the kindness and the healing that goes forth. Then you find you are encouraged and motivated to change your style of eating and caring about the earth. I truly find this book to be one I choose to reach for many times and have it on my book shelf in my dining room. I will place it carefully so that the cover can be seen to remind my family and myself of its many special qualities.
I hope the author will write many more books of this nature in the future. Perhaps it will help to bring "quality" back to the American lifestyle.

The Imus Ranch: Cooking for Kids and Cowboys.......2007-04-15
The first thing that strikes me about this book is the unabashed vitriol and nastiness with which Deidre Imus references former employees - notably cooks, but others as well. It's self-serving but certainly doesn't serve her well. It sounds, quite simply, hateful rather than amusing.
The other wind gust that catches my face is the actual narration: it sounds more like Don Imus' dictation than the separate and individual voice of his wife. As a long-time listener of his now defunct (unjustifiably, in my view) radio show - the attitude, word choices, and written vernacular indicate - to me, anyway - that this book was either edited by Don Imus in a very big way, or Deidre Imus has adopted her husband's communication style. Could be either, or both.
Rumors of the origination and ownership of the recipes aside - this book really doesn't trip my trigger. The nutritional and health impact of an ovo-vegan diet are also up in the air...but heading toward Blue Earth. This book reads more like a pagan sermon than an authentic cookbook.
Just my two cents.
How much I enjoyed the Imus Ranch Cookbook.......2006-03-19
I enjoyed very much the Imus Ranch Cookbook. I was interested in the history of the ranch, the philosophy of the Imus family, and the goals of the ranch. The quality of the book was very good. The pictures were top quality. The book includes a lot of healthful information about nutrition. I can't speak about the recipes because I gave the books (3 of them) to friends (after reading one of them). They each have enjoyed the book and I await their critique of the recipes. I recommend this book for anyone interested in this worthy cause and anyone interested in healthy non-carnivorous recipes. I intend to purchase another copy just for me.
Great Cookbook -other reviews are overthinking it.......2006-02-03
I checked out this book from the library just looking for a cookbook. I was with my 2yr old and just grabbed it not knowing what it was other than a cowboy cookbook. I was thrilled to see it was a vegan cookbook. My daughter has a severe milk alergy and we cook a lot of Vegan meals because of this and this cookbook is so helpful that I went on Amazon and bought one to keep. The recipes are easy and very kid friendly.
I read the other reviews of this book and just don't get it. This is a cookbook. It just so happens to have great pictures and touching essays. I think some of the other reviewers are overthinking it. I don't know the author and don't really care who she is. It's just a great Vegan cookbook. Forget about all the other junk written about the politics.

The summer of 1923 was an unforgettable one. That summer, for the first time, Fritz Lewis, a rich American dilettante, opened up his villa at Cap d'Antibes for an entire season of celebration. Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein all passed through, while Picasso reigned on the beach at La Garoupe, impossibly in love with Sibylle, Fritz Lewis' wife, and there created the masterpieces of his classical period. After Picasso at the Bateau-Lavoir, Pierre Daix draws us into the story of one of the painter's most disturbing periods.
Book Description
On December 14, 1944, Japanese soldiers massacred 139 of 150 American POWs. This biography tells the story of Glenn ("Mac") McDole, one of eleven young men who escaped and the last man out of Palawan Prison Camp 10A.
Beginning on December 8, 1941, at the U.S. Navy Yard barracks at Cavite, the story of this young Iowa marine continues through the fighting on Corregidor, the capture and imprisonment by the Japanese Imperial Army in May 1942, Mac's entry into the Palawan prison camp in the Philippines on August 12, 1942, the terrible conditions he and his comrades endured in the camps, and the terrible day when 139 young soldiers were slaughtered. The work details the escapes of the few survivors as they dug into refuse piles, hid in coral caves, and slogged through swamp and jungle to get to supportive Filipinos. It also contains an account and verdicts of the war crimes trials of the Japanese guards, follow-ups on the various places and people referred to in the text, with descriptions of their present situations, and a roster of the names and hometowns of the victims of the Palawan massacre.
Customer Reviews:
Great material for National History Day.......2007-03-07
This book was very good even though it tells a terrible story. There is a lot of detail about massacre of 139 American prisoners of war and the survival of just 11 as they hid in garbage and swam 5 miles in the ocean to safety. This is a great source for a national history day project. This book would be 6 stars if that rating existed.
Must Read Book.......2005-10-31
This book should be required reading for every high school student in America - most people have no idea what many ordinary young men endured as prisoners during World War II, how they behaved under the unbelievable burden of watching their friends die and how they overcame the horror of being POWs of the Japanese in the Philippines - this book is extremely well-written, simple and concise without self promotion concerning one of the worst atrocities in modern warfare - it's an easy although uncomfortable read - it'll make you proud to call McDole and other POWs fellow Americans
This should allways be a reminder of our fathers sacrifices.......2005-07-16
I could not put it down. I really liked the book. I meet Mr. McDole and his wife this last June. What an amazing family and how he over came tragidy.
A Great Story of a Survivor.......2005-03-29
This is a great story of a survivor who makes it and also the story of others who perish. All of whom are heroes under conditions we hope will never again be faced by POW's. This book tells the story of their sacrifice which should never be forgotten.
A True Incident, A Lesson for All Time.......2004-12-01
One of the good stories to come out of World War II was the rescue of over 500 American prisoners at the CABANATUAN MILITARY PRISON CAMP. If you are not familiar with the story, 123 members of the 6th Rangers sneaked through enemy lines to the prison camp, killed all the guards and got the men out.
It was not common for such break outs to be attempted. And the reason for the rescue at Cabanatuan was the massacre at Palawan.
Palawan was an offshoot of Cabanatuan, some 150 prisoners from Cabanatuan had been sent to Palawan as slave workers. They spent two and a half years working on the air strip. Then on December 15, 1944 the Americans landed on Mindoro. So the Japanese decided to execute the 150 prisoners. They missed eleven who managed to escape.
This is the story of one young marine. From all the people in the USMC he bacame one of the 7,000 Americans captured at Corregidor, and one of the eleven to survive Palawan.
As I read this book, my first thought was to damn the Japanese. Their culture of Bushido created an environment where such events happened. Then I thought of the Islamic terrorists, or cult or whatever you'd call it in Iraq who yesterday beheaded someone just to get it in the news. And that lead me to the events in the prison in Iraq where we Americans didn't exactly act with honor.
This is a book, not only excellently written, but tells of a side of the war not often reported. And forces you to think of other places, other incidents. Highly recommended.
