GREAT SELF-HELP BOOK FOR UNDERSTANDING MOOD SWINGS.......2006-10-30
I recommend this book to all of my clients that have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. They all come back raving about the book--and in turn recommend it to their family and friends. This book is easy to read and understand. This book provides a thorough understanding of the issue as well as some very practical ways to manage the mood swings.

The paradox of bipolar disorder baffles its victims with its manic highs and depressive lows, plaguing as many as two million Americans. Since bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) has often been misdiagnosed as depression, many patients have had a difficult if not impossible task of understanding and managing this condition. WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN explores the nature of this illness, including who is at risk and where to get help. In simple terms, this often complex and devastating condition becomes comprehensible and hopefully manageable.
For readers looking for basic information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder, WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN is a useful resource. All the practical information one needs to begin education oneself is concisely presented in a question/answer format that reads quickly. However, readers expecting information beyond the basics will be well advised to continue their search elsewhere. There is little here for those who wish to live successfully with the illness. Moreover, the dry, clinical tone lends an air of bleakness, failing to recognize the large number of people diagnosed as bipolar that live healthy, successfully lives. Nevertheless, for readers seeking a beginner's understanding of mental illness and a guide through the morass of finding help, WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN will provide the practical advise needed to make a start.
Glad I read it!.......2003-12-28
I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after being misdiagnosed with depression for 10 years and this book made a lot of sense. I liked that it addressed the suicide issue, because most books don't mention suicide hardly at all. It stated that bipolar disorder is the #1 reason for suicide in the U.S. The book is easy to read and very interesting for the bipolar person. I also read my husband some of the pertinent stuff I thought he should know. I learned a lot about ECT. It is obviously written by people who know what they're talking about.
Straight Answers..........2003-04-04
Doctors, whose heads are cluttered with statistics, case studies, and theoretical jargon, often write books that are too heavy, boring, and technical for the average person to want to understand. My sincere thanks go to the Dell Publishers, who have had the intelligence to create a series of easy-to-read guides for educating the public about mental health.
Having experienced Bipolar Disorder for several years now, I finally decided it was time to accept that I have this disease and to begin to understand it. "Why Am I Up, Why Am I Down" is a fast-paced, accessible book that tells you what you need to know.
The main idea that runs through this book is: Bipolar Disorder is a serious illness and needs to be treated by a psychiatrist. Having the disorder can mean a significant impairment in life functioning and, though it is not curable, it is treatable.
The book is written like a big brochure. It's organized into eight chapters covering aspects of identifying and learning to live with the disease: (1) Definitions/Overview; (2) Symptoms/Diagnosis; (3) Causes; (4) How to Get Help; (5) The Role of Psychotherapy; (6) The Role of Medication; (7) Alternative Therapies; (8) Coping. Each chapter is broken down into a friendly question-and-answer format, asking questions like, "What is the typical day like for someone in a hypomanic state," and then answering them.
While there is a chapter on alternative therapies, one of the main ideas in this book is that, if you have Bipolar Disorder, you'll probably be taking medication (combined with other therapies).
What this book drills over and over again is that Bipolar Disorder is a serious medical condition that needs to be treated. "Bipolar disorder is the leading cause of suicide in the country," the book says. ...
a readable guide to bipolar disorder.......2003-03-16
This book provides a straightforward explanation of bipolar disorder that is easy to understand and will help educate those with the illness. Some reviewers have described the writing style as dry, and I agree with this- it's pretty much just a dry presentation of facts, though I found the style conducive to learning. I also found it interesting to hear about the illness from an experienced psychiatrist's perspective, as his opinions are grounded in a lot of clinical experience. I also agree with one other reviewer that he sometimes doesn't seem too kind in his description of patients. Nonetheless, definitely worth reading to expand your knowledge of this illness. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

Mama mia! You won't go wrong with this cookbook!.......2003-02-12
This is a fantastic cook book!!! I love cookbooks with pictures and this one if filled with them. I got this cookbook after I bought a pasta machine so I could find some sauces to serve with my homemade pasta and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I have tried several recipes already and found them easy to prepare and they turned out great. I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed!
Very well done and complete Pasta Cookbook.......2002-07-17
A very helpful book, well organized, and full of recipes from the easy to the more complicated. Everything can be done in a reasonable amount of time if you adhere to the star method to choose your level of complication (one star: easy; 2 stars, a little harder...). This is a favorite of those who've tried the dishes, though a little more careful editing would have been welcome (for example, in the recipe for Ziti with Vegetables and Italian Sausage, why is there no sausage in the recipe? For the times you must create a béchamel, why not mention that you return the sauce to a medium-high heat and not the low heat you were just using?). I won't be picky: this is a great pasta book. One caveat: if weight watching is an issue for dishes you prepare, keep looking - these recipes are mostly quite high in the calorie department. However, if you're looking for a good general pasta book, try this one first and wait before buying others; this one supplanted most of my other pasta cookbooks, and it may for you, too.
Great recipes.......2001-08-09
I randomly picked a pasta salad recipe out of the book for an upcoming barbecue with friends. The dish was excellent, I got rave reviews from my guests. I can't wait to try another recipe.
Great book for a picky gourmet.......2001-07-19
Wow, I thought I had pretty much seen all the great cookbooks out in the market. Boy I am so pleased by this book. It is very well organized, with catagories, such as pasta with meat, chicken, vegetable, etc. I was pleasantly surprised with the gnocchi section, as it is hard to find great recipes with pictures for this topic.
If you are searching for a great book that will satisfy both your palate and mind, this is the book to have.
BTW, the paperback version comes with a plastic cover. So no worry about ruining the cover during cooking. A++++ !!!

Customer Reviews:
A bit misleading.......2007-01-07
Whilst this is a lovely book for a beginner, I fail to see what is "organic" about stringing Pearls, Crystals, Beads together. Simply calling a Bracelet made of glass, silver, crystal beads "Desert Blooms" does not make it organic! It should have been called Mixed Media as it does do a good job of showing you Polymer Clay, some river stones and glass work. THe majority of the Organic looks are achieved from Polymer doing what it does best - imitating nature. THe book is nicely set out, clear instructions and supplies list. I was expecting this book to be on using Organic items such as Twines, Seeds, Pods etc. A bit misleading, however I am still happy I purchased it.
Love it - unique jewelry designs and layout is AAAA+.......2005-12-22
Great idea book for the designer who appreciates organic materials. Beautifully done layouts and easy to follow instructions. Lots of great jewelry designers featured with step by step instructions. Nice cover design !

Book Description
In a recent study, half of all Americans rated their relationship with at least one parent as either 'poor' or 'terrible,' and more than a third felt this way about both parents. As life expectancy continues to rise and the parent-child relationship extends further into adulthood, this problem is becoming more prevalent than ever. Now, psychologist Dale Atkins presents a step-by-step plan for adults trying to come to terms with parents who are only human-before it is too late. In I'm OK, You're My Parents, Atkins applies the same intelligent, no-nonsense approach that's made her a frequent guest on top-rated TV shows. She urges a restructuring of the relationships between adults and their aging parents and gives practical, specific advice on how to exorcise the demons of anger and resentment, untangle financial arrangements that cause stress and feelings of powerlessness, set limits on your parents' demands for time and attention, turn a spouse or friends into a powerful resource, overcome your own resistance to change, and discover the redemptive power of humor. This book draws on Atkins's twenty-five years of experience as a relationship expert to present a comprehensive guide to repairing difficult relationships, gaining control, and building a life that you and your parents can live with for years to come.

Dr. Atkins Gets It.......2005-09-24
I recently finished Dr. Dale Atkin's 'Sanity Savers' and found it so helpful I had to see what else she had written. First of all I found that Dr. Atkins is a prolific writer, but after happening upon "I'm OK You're My Parents: How To Overcome Guilt, Let Go of Anger, and Create a Relationship That Works," I am convinced she is not only a talented professional but a wise woman who understands that true interpersonal intimacy is not only good for one's mental health but physical heath as well. I, once again as after reading "Sanity Savers," came away with a deep appreciation of the depth of her knowledge about how familial relations actually work including all the love, ambivalence, joy, sorrow, anger and remorse that are contained within them. I lent it to a friend who called me to say the book opened her eyes in the same way it did mine. Thank you Dr. Atkins from both of us.
Relationships Can Improve!.......2004-07-07
Despite your adult age, are your parents still driving you crazy? Dr. Atkins' can help! With engaging wit, she shares wisdom mined from years of experience helping people improve their relationships. Dr. Atkins helps us see and claim the power we have to make changes in ourselves that inevitably alter our relationships with parents. Her discussion of family dynamics comes to life through the many stories she shares. Dr. Atkins guides the reader through specific practices that will improve not only one's ability to deal with parents, but other significant relationships as well. If you are serious about improving your relationship with your parents, or with your adult children, this is the book to read.
Got Parents? Read This!.......2004-07-07
For anyone with parents -- living or passed on -- this book is a must read. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry but
most of all .. it will make understand that you are not alone.
Your issues - good and bad - are not solely yours. Everyone
has parental issues and Dr. Atkins shows us how to live and love
our way through them! Not riddled with psychological mumbo jumbo Dr. Atkins speaks to the heart of the matter. From being
a child with parents to an adult parenting your parents, I'm OK guides you through survival! Beautifully written and the type of book that you refer back to often throughout your daily life.
I'm One of Those Parents, and I want to be OK too!.......2004-07-07
I predict this book will become one of the classic self-help best sellers, and it should! Dr. Atkins writes from years of expertise in counseling young (and not-so-young) adults who are looking for ways to improve their relationships with their parents. Not "bad, awful, terrible" parents, but mothers and/or fathers who sometimes intrude, impose, ignore, invade, and/or may be insensitive to (or unaware of!) some of the needs, wishes, interests, and/or opinions of their adult children. The book is filled with a wide range of parent - adult child issues that will ring many familiar bells for probably most of us. Dr. Atkins' approach is articulate, optimistic, and practical, and is fun to read. I was sure she was writing about my own parents in several chapters, and I wish I had had access to these ideas years ago, instead of just rolling my eyes, silently mumbling and grumbling, planning visits carefully, censoring how much of my own life I shared with them. And they were actually pretty darn good parents - we just couldn't communicate about a lot of "stuff" from their generation to mine. After reading Dr. Atkins's book, I ordered a copy for my adult daughter! She's reading it now. Gulp!
How adults can learn to relate better with their parent.......2004-04-27
In the wake of a multitude of books about how our parents have created all of our emotional problems comes this book that points out the fact that blaming someone is not a solution to problems. The focus of the book is to take that next step and find ways that you can move through guilt and anger and create a working relationship with your parents. To this end the book contains lots of examples from Dr. Atkins' actual patient files. It also includes exercises to work through, questionnaires to help you understand yourself and your relationship with your parents, and various lessons to illustrate the principles involved.
The first part of the book focuses on you. It includes an examination of ways to take control of your life so your past doesn't control your present, how to deal with guilt and parents who use it to control you, and anger.
The next part changes focus to your parents. How did they grow up? What did they go through as they were growing up? What was their life like? The focus is on developing empathy so you can use it to develop forgiveness. One of the most important points of the chapter is realizing that your fantasy parent doesn't exist. Not only do they not exist but also those fantasy perfect parents that your friends seemed to have were not perfect either. Two of the coping techniques covered in this chapter include creating reasonable expectations for yourself and your parents and creating appropriate boundaries.
The last section discusses the most common problems when dealing with parents. For example, some of the problems covered include the bait and switch technique, manipulating you with a health crisis, becoming easily offended when you don't share personal details of your life, putting you in the middle of their problems, or using money to manipulate you.
If you have a troubled relationship with your parents and are seeking to change, you should consider picking up a copy of "I'm OK, You're My Parents".

Information not updated.......2007-05-10
I have not read the whole book, as I was interested in info on autism and SID. However, the stats it gives for autism is 2 in 10,000. With all the awareness out there now on autism stating that it is now in fact 1 in 166, I did not even bother to read further. The information is not up to date on these issues. If you are buying it for other reasons, I'm sure it would be fine. Good Luck...
Sound Counsel Without Psycho-babble.......2001-03-24
There is an acute public health crisis in this nation; a crisis precipitated by the burden of suffering experienced by children with mental health needs, and their families. Today's students are challenged by an array of concern that directly impact their well-being. Child abuse, family dysfunction, economic dislocation, and the prevalence of violence, sex, and the objectification of woment in our popular culture all influence childrens' lives each day. Children represent 100% of our future. Therefore fostering social and emotional health in children as a component of healthy child development must be a national priority.
Anyone who is a parent has asked him or herself at one time "is my child ok?" Dr. Paul has written a cogent, no-nonsese book that will equip parents to be better informed about the mental health issues of children.
As a parent of two children, and as a teacher of children with special needs, I have found this book to be extremely useful. Dr. Paul skillfully and gently guides the reader to help her discern when a child's behavior is "just a stage she is going through," and, therefore "developmentally appropriate," as well as what to look for when dealing with maladaptive behaviors, and mental health issues.
This book is a must read for parents, teachers, school couselors, and anyone else who has a stake in the mental health of children. Children represent 100% of our future. We need to care for them as best as we can. Dr. Paul's work can help do just that.
Keep This Book At Your Bedside.......2000-12-06
Because kids communicate more through behavior than words its so hard sometimes to judge if there is a serious problem or if your child is just struggling to communicate something to you. This book is a great aid in getting insight into your child and holding a parent back from pathologizing them. As the mother of two young boys, I really appreciate the compassionate attitude toward children-- And the reassuring words to the often freaked- out mom. This would definately be one of my "desert island" parenting books.
