In "Mother Was a Gunner's Mate," Josette Wingo opens the door on a fascinating chapter of World War II Navy life that few of us know much about -- even those of us who served with her in that little-known branch of the Navy, the Armed Guard. She deserves a resounding well-done!

Hey, Gunny!.......2000-07-18

In my long and checkered career in the Navy I came to think of Gunner's Mates as large, often hulking male persons, strong of arm and often weak of hearing. I had no idea there were women who had proudly worn the Gunny rating, and who had been responsible for training many of those sea-going lads during WWII. Josette Dermody Wingo was one of them, making waves throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as she taught sailors to man the big guns from Treasure Island.

A Good Irish Catholic Girl in the best traditions, Wingo nonetheless managed to have one helluva good time on liberty "on the beach", as we Old Salts say. Lively, pretty and ready for anything that offered the promise of fun, she ran riot through a world that was at once caught in the grip of war, yet far more innocent in the ways of men and women than it is now.

In addition to the interest the professional description of her training and job embues, and it is interesting, this book is funny and endearing. It is, in short, a great read that might just educate a little about military women and the range of capabilities they've displayed while it entertains.

Salty WAVE's wartime memoir.......2000-05-30

Full of gung-ho patriotic fervor and a spirit of adventure, Josette Dermody joined the Navy Women's Reserve (WAVES) during World War ll. She spent the War on Treasure Island, California, training sailors of the Naval Armed Guard to use the ring gunsights of Orlikons. This is a rolicking, fast-reading journal, written in a delightfully salty first-person. The description of her training and duties is interesting, but most entertaining are the accounts of her off-duty misadventures. She and her feisty girlfriends have fun! She befriends German POW's, drinks vodka with Russian seamen, and carrouses in "Frisco" with rowdy American sailors. "You dames is nuts!" says her main admirer, a rakish and handsome bosun's mate. Through it all, her dignity remains intact and her pride in her patriotic service evident. A grand book about the "lighter side" of the War, in the tradition of "Mister Roberts" -- I reccommend it!

Last year at x-mas my wife and decided that since we just had a baby and funds were low,that we would buy each other one gift that we picked out around $20.00.
I picked a beard trimmer and my wife picked out the Juice Ladys book.So I thought I would be nice and buy her two Juice Ladys books.
Well the books came and I looked through them,and found to my surprise that the same recipes were printed throughout both books.
A lot of the recipes can be used for the same things.So instead of printing the recipe then putting what it can be used for the recipes are reprinted over and over.
So in retrospect I suggest buying one book instead of two or three with different titles,because they have the same recipes.
I hope this has been of some help for those looking to buy this or other Juice Lady books.

Mouthwatering User Friendly Recipes.......2000-07-10

This is a perfect cookbook! Not only are the recipes mouthwateringly delicious, they are simple and easy to prepare. The ingredient lists are fairly short and readily available at the neighborhood market. Many of the dishes take under 20 minutes to prepare.

Beyond the recipes themselves, the book contains some great reference information. There's a terrific illustrated guide to peppers, a glossary of mexican spices, and helpful hints for general cooking are scattered throughout the book.

This is an amazing value! If you're interested in low fat / high flavor cooking snap this one up!

I have several low-fat mexican cookbooks and find myself using this one the most. Their recipes for corn bread, beans and soup are great.

Slightly disappointed.......2007-07-07

I loved the drawings but the book has only 4 or 5 different butterflies that were repeated with different number of butterflies on the page. Instead of putting more varity of butterflies or the same butterflies even but in different scenery, they just kept using the same few butterflies and increased the number of butterflies on the pages throughout the book. One butterfly on one page, the same one duplicated on another, then quadrupled on another etc. throughout the book for the IDENTICAL 4 or 5 butterflies which seems to be a little lazy. This seems to be the same for all these books at least the book of flowers was the same.

Hours of Entertainment!.......2007-04-04

I bought this for a friend's niece for her ninth birthday. She loves to draw and color, so I bought this book and a pad of tracing paper for her to replicate and color the patterns over and over. It was a hit! We spent the next few hours drawing and coloring to our hearts' content! The patterns are beautifully drawn and each page offers a little something different to focus on.

Buerflies Nloom on the Pages of Ruth Heller's Coloring Book.......2000-04-18

Ruth Heller's Butterfly designs are simply beautiful, true to her other coloring books. The way that she takes each of the large images, shrinks them down and tiles them , createing an M.C. Escher-like pattern. The paper in the book is very thick and takes marker well. You don't have to worry about color bleeding through the paper because the butterflies are only printed on the front sides of the pages. This makes it easier to cut the images out for decoupage as well.

Beautiful color pictures on the front cover and a chance to read about and color the butterflies on the inside. You should buy a set of colored penciles for this color book. Your child can identify the butterflies by the picture on the cover and learn more about them in the book. A real nature guide, not your run of the mill coloring book. Buy the series and you can sneak in an education on nature while your child is having fun.

I love this book. It straightforwardly describes how to divide your backyard into enticing secluded corners using fences, lattices and hedges. Its filled with all kinds of clearly illustrated layouts and full color photos. All of the designs are classic English. Even though the book is dated 1987, the designs would not look out of place in todays gardens. It also has a lot of practical information on how to build paths, walls, fences, and varieties for hedges.

Here is a user-friendly guide to treating a wide range of health problems homeopathically. Besides arthritis, it is a book to go to for spine, knee, hip, foot or ankle problems, as well as headaches. Also presents alternatives for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Extremely clear and well-organized, it offers the reader the benefit of a great deal of experience.

an invaluable resource.......2006-04-05

I concur with the previous reviewer. I'm a chiropractor with some formal training in homeopathy and before purchasing this book I was pretty much at a loss as to how to integrate acute homeopathy into my practice. This book changed everything. I now have a pharmacy of over 100 remedies that I use on a regular basis. I now have a foundation onto which I can add knowledge gained from practical experience. But be forwarned: This book will help out a great deal with acute prescribing, but don't think that you will be able to tackle constitutional levels of healing without additional training and practice.

Ryogen and Mount Hiei focuses on the transformation of the Tendai School from a small and impoverished group of monks in the early ninth century to its emergence as the most powerful and influential school of Japanese Buddhism in the last half of the tenth century--a position it would maintain throughout the medieval period. This is the first study in a Western language of the institutional factors that lay behind the school's success. At its core is a biography of a major figure behind this transformation, Ryogen (912-985). The discussion, however, extends well beyond a simple biography as Ryogen's activities are placed in their historical and institutional context.

Unlike the recluses and eccentrics that have so often attracted Western readers of Buddhism, Ryogen was a consummate politician and builder. Because he lost his major monastic sponsor at an early age, he was forced to find ways to advance his career with little support. His activities reveal much about the path to success for monks during the tenth century. Skill in debate, the performance of Esoteric Buddhist ritual, and strategic alliances with powerful lay and monastic figures were important to his advance. In 966 Ryogen was appointed head of the Tendai School and served until his death nineteen years later. He has been vilified at times for his loyalty to his own faction within Tendai at the expense of other groups. Careful analysis of the political and social factors behind his attitudes, however, places his activities in their appropriate context.

The study concludes with a discussion of the ordinations and roles of nuns during the early Heian period. An examination of Ryogen's close relation with his mother helps define the ambiguities of a school that prohibited women from the precincts of its temple yet performed rituals to insure safe childbirth and frequently attracted their patronage. A number of primary sources are translated in the appendices.
