Book Description
THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO MY DAUGHTER PIXY. FROM THE MOMENT SHE WAS BORN, SHE BECAME MY CENTER OF HOPE AND ASPIRATION, THE SOURCE OF MY STRENGTH. BECAUSE, I LOVED HER SO MUCH, FROM THE DAY ONE I LEFT HOME ON AN OVERSEAS TOUR OF DUTY WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN EUROPE, SHE WAS IN MY THOUGHTS ALMOST CONSTANTLY. AT HOME, I HAD TOLD HER A BEDTIME STORYK EVERY NIGHT. WHEN I LEFT, I DECIDED TO MAINTAIN THIS TRADITION THROUGH A SERIESK OF DAILYK LETTERS. BECAUSE I WOULD BE AWAY FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD, I WAS AFRAID OF LOSING OUR CLOSENESS…”

A glipse of the past.......2001-08-10
Those who are looking for the more esoteric parts of John Dee's life will not find it in this book -but- will find an understanding of who he was as a person. Being a book of medieval history, it tends to center more on John Dee the Mathematician, John Dee the Philosopher, and John Dee the Poltician (or advisor). I believe French paints an accurate picture as is possible of John Dee and England in the 1500's. Since this is a very scholarly and well-referenced book it can be a little dry if books on history do not interest you. Ultimately, though, I came away from the book with an admiration for the genuis of this man which no book on just the esoteric parts of his life will ever provide.

Like water..........2007-08-19
Like water, Diana Lang's "Opening to Meditation" flows effortlesly. Her work is as natural, pure, and simple as the practice itself.
The beautifully-designed cover beckons one to enter the sacred, the sacred within the pages and the sacred within one's self.
This book is a gift of love to us all.
Thank you, Diana.

A perfect way to relax.......2007-08-17
Although a novice, I found the soothing voice, waves, music and content on this CD transforming me into complete relaxation. I highly recommend Diana's Opening to Meditation.

Anyone can do it; everyone should.......2005-12-11
I had always avoided meditation, figuring I was too "hyper" or got bored too easily to be open to the process. Diana's book (and accompanying CD) changed my mind about meditation. This little book is so beautifully simple, and so reassuring, that just about anyone who reads it will want to make meditation part of their daily lives.
The book and CD complement each other wonderfully---but either is valuable on its own. What I love is that the author lets the reader define meditation for themselves. She gives them the tools to begin---breathing, focus, observation, openness----and supports them in their journey. You need not worry about "doing it right" ---it's about what's right for you.
What I appreciated most was her reassurance about all the other thoughts that enter your mind when you are meditating. It's okay. Everyone has it. (I had no idea that this was true!) You don't need to "start over" or give up. This was of tremendous value to me, and will keep me on my meditation path.
I also bought this book as a gift. It's perfect.
This is a great book. Try it! You will not regret it. .......2005-04-30
Opening to Meditation by Diana Lang is an amazingly simple and user-friendly guide that demystifies (in a good way!) meditation. It teaches you how to get started reaping immediate benefits, and also how to keep getting more. The bonus CD is terrific. I use it a lot. This book also makes a great gift. I have given it to several people, and all of them have loved it.
This book and CD have changed my life!.......2005-04-28
I have had other meditation tapes, but this is a treasure! Diana's voice is exquisite and angelic, she makes it safe and EASY to explore our inner frontiers, a new adventure for many and a necessary SURVIVAL mechanism in our busy 21st Century. If all our world leaders read this book and meditated with Diana each day, we would be living in a peaceful and loving world.
I look forward to my a.m. meditation now, as it feels like my "sweet friend" is sitting with me. A delicious way to start the day, to remind me who I really am.
Book Description
For five seasons, Roy Yamaguchi has explored the ingredients and growers of Hawaii on his public television show, Hawaii Cooks with Roy Yamaguchi. Now, in a companion volume to the sixth season, he brings his rich culinary discoveries to home kitchens. In HAWAII COOKS, Roy introduces a comprehensive pantry that describes his favorite ingredients in detail and carefully explains how flavors, textures, and colors play off and complement each other on the plate. As a classically trained chef, Roy combines fresh, Hawaiian-grown ingredients with French cooking techniques to produce a mouthwatering collection of recipes with eastern and western influences. Recipes such as Crab and Taro Cakes with Béarnaise Sauce, Lamb Steaks with Sweet Potato Mash and Apple-Curry Sauce, and Crab with Vanilla Sauce pack an unexpected punch in every delicious bite, bringing out the flavors of ingredients in ways that only Roy can.

Falls short of expectations.......2005-07-27
It does not appear to be a bad book. However, too much time is spent discussing the ingredients and not enough space is devoted to recipes. Certainly some discussion of raw ingredients is useful, but fully 1/3 of the book is devoted to it. If that's what you want, this is the book for you. There are other books covering Hawaiian recipes that are better choices if your emphasis is recipes.
Roy Cooks but must have more to offer.......2004-01-28
Book is really a disapointment. It seems to suffer from being a companion book to a TV program and so does not stand up as a cookbook on it's own right. I buy cookbooks for inspiration and ongoing learning but don't care for watching TV Chefs. Chef Yamaguchi it seems is a very creative cook ,but if you are going to try to sell books for $32.50 it needs more stuffing. I want to know more about how he thinks and were his insparation comes from. I feel that bought Sam Choy and Alan Wong offer more of this to my understanding. I would have also liked to have the English names listed in the recipes. I spent a lot of time looking in the Pantry section to find out what the differant ingredants were.

This book is TINY with hardly any recipe photos.......2006-12-28
I didn't realize when I ordered it but this book is only 4" wide (6" tall) - the size of a photograph! It's really small. Also, I was under the impression it would have photos of the recipes (I like to know what it's supposed to look like when it's done) but of the 42 recipes, only 7 have pictures. Even the recipes are "small". For example, this is one recipe in the book:
(Lists 5 ingredients, one of which is water, then...)
"Mix ingredients together until smooth. Pour into greased 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour."
That's it! That's the entire page! And most pages are like that.
There are other books with the same recipes so I wouldn't recommend buying this book.

Good if you want to cook a pig in the ground.......2000-06-30
This book was o.k.; however, it has very few recipes. It provides detailed information on how to cook a pig in the ground for a luau, and has a few recipes (for 25 or more people) that seem fairly simple to make. I purchased the book to get some menu ideas for a luau that I am having and this book did not provide me with that.

Book Description
Woodworkers, chess set collectors, and history buffs will enjoy this comprehensive guide to the manufacture and design of wooden chessmen. Readers will learn the origin and meaning of the symbols used to signify the six chess pieces, including insight into the king's crown, the knight's horse head, and the battlements atop the rook. Details are also provided on how the design of individual pieces communicates membership in specific chess sets, and a series of photographs demonstrates six sets made by some of today's chess-making masters. Detailed drawings offer guidance on designing chess sets, and an extensive section on woodturning techniques, including step-by-step diagrams and color pictures, will explain the process of creating chessmen for interested woodworkers and woodturners.

Chess? make and play.......2005-08-25
If you like chess sets, if you like wood turning, you may not miss this book
An Appreciation By Robert E. Stoller.......2005-08-04
Professional Woodturner Mike Darlow is a self-publisher in rural Australia who describes himself as "a poor and only occasional chess player". Nevertheless, he has found a personal passion and rich outlet for self-expression in turning and designing chessmen. His objective in writing Turned Chessmen was to promote an understanding of the design of chessmen, both to give more pleasure when players use them, to make players more discerning when they buy them, and to encourage new designs which can be played with.
In my opinion as a chess player and modest collector of sets, Mr. Darlow has succeeded magnificently in achieving his objectives. Turned Chessmen is a combination of history, anecdotal detail, aesthetic and philosophical guide, and a thoroughly - documented how-to-do-it manual.
The book is extensively illustrated - - containing more than 260 photographs, diagrams and drawings. Its opening chapter is a 56 - page recounting of the History of Chessmen, with more than 60 images of chessmen spanning more than a 1000 years from an Ivory King circa. 8th - 10th century up to several 20th century examples. Perhaps the most significant "find" is the extremely rare set of "Improved Geometrical and Universal Chess-Men" designed in 1864 by the American architect Frederick S. Copley, which became the inspiration for several wallet-sized flat-folding portable sets.
The next successive chapters are
* a Gallery showing sets recently made by six
contemporary woodturners (including Darlow himself);
* a 15-page compendium containing 35 illustrations of
piece symbols;
* a 30-page discussion of the essential considerations
and elements involved in designing chess sets;
* a collection of drawings for 10 different styles of
chess sets, available for copying or inspiration;
* a 35-page manual for making chessmen, illustrated with
94 photographs of actual tool-work on the lathe; and
* a brief concluding chapter on crafting boards, boxes
and tables.
Finally, Mr. Darlow has assembled an extensive bibliography of books on chessmen and on the history of chess.
In short, Turned Chessman is an enjoyable read and a highly valuable resource of anyone who has any interest at all in chessmen as a form of participatory sculpture.
Great Book.......2005-03-04
A really outstanding book for anyone interested in chess sets - history and collecting as well as making your own modern sets. Also, woodturners/woodworkers would be very interested in this book written by an accomplished woodworker who has published in this field before. The writing is high quality as are the illustrations and photos.

High Desert Gardening.......2000-06-05
I found this book in our local library and liked it so well that I am pruchasing one. The plant listings and discriptions are concise and complete. There us information on propagation, altitude requirements, alternate species and group planting suggestions. All in all, a very good book for the high desert and native plant gardener, particularly for the new desert dweller.

Book Description
This lyrical and articulate mix of the practical and the poetic combines personal story, wildland ecology, restoration gardening practices, and native plant horticulture. Judith Lowry's voice and experiences make a rich matrix for essays that include discussions of wildflower gardening, the ecology of native grasses, wildland seed-collecting, principles of natural design, and plant/animal interactions. Though this book is based on California gardens, readers from all parts of the country will be inspired and informed by these examples of gardening to include "the larger garden beyond the fence."
Gardening with a Wild Heart promises to be a classic for lovers of nature writing, gardeners, bioregionalists, and students and professionals in horticulture, landscape design, and ecological restoration.

Not enough.......2005-04-12
I was dissapointed when I recieved this book in the mail. I was expecting a native gardening guide book, with perhaps some photos of native plants, descriptions of how natives can be used in the garden and such. Instead I recieved a book warning of the enormous dangers of planting exotic, non native species in one's back yard. The book is heart felt and well written. If you are not convinced that planting natives is the way to go, you will be after reading this book. Unfortunatly, you probably won't be much further along in knowing how or which or where.
A book every California gardener should read.......2004-01-11
A Californian living overseas, I happened to find this book while looking for ideas for a piece of property I own in California. Initially I had "cottage garden" in mind; later, my thinking evolved to more exotic tropical plants. This wonderful book was the first step in my complete conversion to the native plant movement. California is an ecological "island" with an incredible richness of native plants: 6,000 species, of which something like 2,000 live nowhere else. Yet these have been decimated by exotic weeds, development and large-scale agriculture. We should be proud of the native California plants that are now prized by landscapers and gardeners all over the world: the redwood, douglas fir, monterey pine, lilac, and all wildflowers especially the poppy, our State Flower (to name but a few). Yet despite the growing momentum of the native plant movement in the state, many gardeners are indifferent to the debate.
Look for the tufted 6-foot stalks of pampas grass as you drive around California: this aggressive invader from Peru is still being planted by gardeners and landscapers. Consider that eight million acres in the state (and growing) are covered with yellow star thistle, another exotic weed. Aggressive non-native plants out-compete natives (even to the point of extinction) and contribute to the decline of the environment, often in the form of soil erosion.
The most important lesson from this thought-provoking book is that we are interconnected, and the decisions we take on our postage-stamp properties affect the entire environment. We can make a difference. What we do on our little plots can do a lot to restore the ecological well-being of the entire state. As we see the birds and other animals - creatures that evolved specifically for our native flora - return to reclaim the land, parcel by parcel, we can say we have done something positive for the state of California.
Not Just About Gardening.......2001-11-11
"Gardening With a Wild Heart" is a wonderful book. Even if you could care less about gardening or native plants, it is still a great read. There is so much in here about different ways of life, past and present, in unique Marin County. Open it to any page and you will find fascinating information on a wide variety of subjects, from actual recipes, to native American philsophy. This book fascinated me for hours, and that rarely happens for me with non-fiction books.
Transformational!.......2001-06-11
I am new to gardening. I was initially seduced by the pictures of California gardens in Sunset magazine. Over the long term, I saw its approach to be only about style and appearance and pleasing the humans. This book on the other hand connects backyard gardening with the wild, with wildlife, and gave me a reason for gardening: for the denizens of the garden -- the birds, bees, butterflies, insects, and squirrels. If you are looking for a how-to book, get Marjorie Schmidt's Gardening with California Native Plants. The definitive California native plant picture identification book hasn't been published, but you can get a lot out of Vern Yadon's Wildflowers of Monterey County.
Great book, but missing pictures for identification.......2000-04-11
I live in Southern California, and have begun to take an interest in planting more native species in my yard and garden. I picked this book up at the Getty Museum after visiting their beautiful gardens.
This bug is full of important information, and taught me (to my chagrin) that I had been guilty of planting lots of invasive alien species in my yard.
Armed with a new resolve to "go native" I set about trying to find and identify the many native plants she describes in her book. Unfortunately, the book has only a limited set of color plates showing some native flowers. And even those images generally show multiple plants, with a description such as "california poppie, five-spot, and baby blue eyes near coyote scrub, California fescue and native bunch grass". While this is helpful, I was unable to tell which plant was which (aside from the poppies).
To use this book to its fullest, you need a good pictorial guide to California plants. Unfortunately I don't know of one. Hopefully a more knowledgable reader can point me in the right direction.
Customer Reviews:
nice but skimpy.......2004-12-23
A decent book, but just an overview. How can you do justice to, and give useful information about, the wild plants in about 60% of the US and Canada, and in just 116 9 x 7" pages?? You can't!
very good book.......2003-04-19
This book is very helpful and a good overview for someone who still needs convincing about native plantings. It has some notes on native shrubs and trees, although I would have liked to have seen a few more references to that but it does describe several types of native gardens and areas in north america that tend towards having different native plants. And it describes many native perenials
For really practical advice and good illustrative photos I would suggest her other book " 100 native plants".
extremely helpful, especially for the Midwest US and Canada.......2001-10-26
Ms. Johnson writes from a Canadian background. The plants and gardens are very adapted to the Midwest, and most could easily be duplicated there. Other areas are represented, but gardeners in the Midwest would benefit the most from using this book. The photos show actual, easily achieveable, garden results. This book might help someone make up their mind whether this is "the look" they will
like in their garden. I hope many people decide they like it, because it is a low-maintenance, environmentally-friendly, water-conserving approach to having the most envied garden on the block!
Book Description
"A wealth of good ideas and trenchant observations about landscape design."--New York Times Book Review
In The Landscaping Revolution, award-winning gardening experts deliver a call to arms for gardeners searching for a better way to plant and maintain their gardens. The Wasowskis' landscaping approach for gardeners of any climate is environmentally friendly and promotes the use of native plants, natural alternatives to man-made chemicals, and easy-to-maintain landscape designs.
Customer Reviews:
Best native gardening info around.......2003-06-07
YES! Just the info we need to help save our planet. At this time of drought and incredible growth all over the US, with water supplies dwindling at a rapid rate, lawsuits over who "owns" the water, increasing use of chemicals not safe for man or beast (or bugs), incredible human stress due in part to lack of time (especially for enjoyment), come Andy and Sally Wasowski with their wonderful ideas for making our lives more comfortable and enjoyable. What good is all that outdoor space if all we do is toil to keep it alive with no time to sit back and enjoy? And why have the added stresses of increased personal spending for maintenance, as well as increased taxes to help pay for maintenance of public areas landscaped in high-maintenance plants and turf? I, for one, had begun to decrease the size of my own yard and add more native and low-maintenance water-wise plantings, when I found Sally's excellent book, "Gardening with Prairie Plants". On to the "Landscaping Revolution"--wonderful photos, great explanations, and some lively humor to help us realize we all need to have a part in keeping our world beautiful, safe, and here for generations to come. It is not our right to "use it all up". Returning to this type of landscaping plan will only benefit us all in so many ways.
A Darn Good Book!.......2002-12-17
I was kind of shocked to see that this title is now out of print. This is a real shame as this book deserves to be widely read. One reader here suggested that the book's cover may have put off too many possible readers--too radical. He might be right about that. But the author here is trying to kick off a sort of gentle green revolution and the cover certainly didn't offend me!
I liked Landscape Revolution, very much and I would like to see the book used as a text for landscape classes. I do some landscape design myself and have taught it and this book would be a good one for students. All too often only one side of the coin is taught in our universities when it comes to horticulture and especially to landscape. The conventional way of thinking, with its heavy reliance on pesticides and chemicals and cloned cultivars, this is always taught. But the flip side, the holistic, organic approach, as found here, this is too often excluded. Landscape Revolution is well written, makes plenty of sense, and is a pleasure to read too. I heard Andy talk once in Columbus, Ohio, and he was a big hit, very dynamic speaker. He writes the same way. I write myself (Safe Sex in the Garden, Ten Speed Press) and I appreciate a job well done. I am not positive this book is for everyone, but for someone who likes to garden, who appreciates a fine landscape, and for someone who isn't too hung up on better living through chemistry, I'd certainly recommend this excellent book.
boy i wish the cover were different.......2001-10-26
I am afraid the very folks who would benefit from reading this book will be put off by the 'revolutionary' cover. Most people need to understand how their suburban yard managment impacts the envirnment around them - but they won't voluntarily pick up a book that suggests they have to be revolutionary in order to make a difference. The content is much less off-putting than the cover, so perhaps this would be a good christmas "nudge" to someone who realizes things could be different, and they will save time, money, effort (and the environment) if they recognize Scott's Lawn company's advertising is trying to sell them on an outdated concept of what the American yard should look like.
I'm ready to join.......2000-07-06
In an easy to read format with great illustrative photos, the authors do a fantastic job of convincing the reader to opt out of the suburban lawn fantasy and boldly go into the next century of gardening. They make a convincing case for a no hassle garden and lawn(if you must), but could have provided more resources for do-it-yourself gardeners-most of the gardens were designed by professionals. I'm planning my new garden now with the help of anybody I can talk to. I enjoyed the chapter on people who had been taken to court for their gardening efforts.
Practical and eye opening advice.......2000-03-15
This book has to have the most unappealing cover that I have ever seen. That thought aside, the authors do provide a sound case against what most Americans think of as "good landscaping". Get rid of the water guzzling lawn, bring on the native plants! It is a book with a good message and should be read.
