Book Description
Leo Szilard has long been overshadowed by such luminaries as Einstein, Oppenheimer, and Enrico Fermi—with whom he codesigned the first nuclear reactor in 1942. A shy, witty eccentric, the Hungarian born Szilard lived both sides of the arms race, working first to prevent, then to hasten, and finally to outlaw nuclear weapons.
"Lanouette's book is eminently readable. . . . An excellent book spiced with telling anecdotes about a strange man who influenced world history."—Max F. Perutz, New York Review of Books
"Lanouette's exhaustively researched and artfully written account of one of the most underrated figures of the atomic age establishes Szilard as both a curmudgeon and a posthumously honored prophet."—Gregg Herken, Nature
"William Lanouette . . . has written the most sensitive and lively biography. . . . The book gives an excellent picture of the man, and makes most interesting reading. I strongly recommend it."—Hans Bethe, Physics Today
"A wonderful book about this endlessly fascinating man . . . one of the most entertaining stories in recent years. . . . A keeper."—Dick Teresi, New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
"Never Destroy What You Cannot Create".......2003-05-24
"Never destroy what you cannot create" was one of Leo Szliard's codes of conduct. Books about unsung heros' of the scientific age are almost like novels. Nevertheless, great men seem to rise above dry biography if they had some esoteric ways. We have all read stacks of magazines and books about Albert Einstein to probe into all the details of what made him tick (in relative time, of course). Leo Szliard was a mental gypsy from the old world who saw the new world before most of the other "famous" thinkers of the 20th Century even opened their eyes. A must read for a knowledge foundation in enjoying the lifestyles of the Wise and Unusual.
Outstanding Portrait of a Catalytic Genius.......2001-01-31
Anyone interested in Szilard, early 20th Century World History, the A-Bomb, or all of the above will find this book hard to put down. This biography is comprehensive, well-researched and properly kind to its subject. Dr. Szilard probably will never get enough credit for his genius and all his great ideas and achievements, but this book does him justice. He seems to come alive in this book, always several steps ahead of everyone else.
American culture's emphasis on individualism often ignores the more collaborative contributions such as Dr. Szilard's. An original, he both created and collaborated, and this book tells his story.
At times, I thought the author might have been over-stating some of Dr. Szilard's accompishments, but the story is otherwise well-done, and frankly, Dr. Szilard deserves a little promotion, so I didn't mind.
Life and loves of the man who patented atomic energy.......1997-04-27
Leo Szilard's life is traced from his early childhood in Budapest, Hungary through his student days in Berlin; and the development of the first atomic reactor and bomb. Dealing openly with Szilard's ambitions, obsessions, and fears the book delves into the intriguing details of his intensely adventurous life. For example, the very day in 1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor, Szilard caught the last train out of Germany; saving his worldly possessions and himself from the hands of the Nazis. Szilard's pluck is revealed when in England, not having access to a laboratory, he borrows equipment and performs perhaps the first nuclear physics chain reaction experiments in his hotel room! Throughout the details of his evolving atomic theories and practical inventions is woven his love life. Because of his genius, vision, and high human values, Szilard is always regarded with suspicion; especially by the American military bureaucracy. Indeed, General Grove who oversees the United States atomic bomb project has it in for Szilard; and even tries to get him deported as an undesireable alien. This is the story of the man who not only ushered in atomic power into the 20th Century but maintained his individuality while doing so. A somewhat sad love story is woven through the fascinating history of Szilard's atomic power. Many classic photographs of Szilard at important and personal events accompany the very well organized text. Although not a literary masterpiece, this book is a biographical masterpiece and should be read by scholars and romantics alike
Exactly what a popular biography of a physicist should be........1995-12-30
Leo is one of my ultimate heros, and Bill Lanouette has
done what is in my mind, the perfect popular bio of a rocket
scientist. Knowing Leo's peripitatic life style, I can
only imagine the horrific amount of time and cunning it
took the author to get his research. Few books I go back
to more often, just for pure pleasure. And I met Leo when
I was but a wee sprout. Please. Don't miss this one.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-05-28
I bought this book about 2 years ago. I am here getting the link to the page to recommend it to another person and though I would write a review. I wasn't sure if feng shui would actually help any of my issues but wow. I mean just reading it, it was like doing a dream interpretation and it was describing my life. She said if you put your bed behind a door, stuff would go on behind your back which was happening and the cleaver designed house sleeping on the blade wall or putting things against it would result in losses and severings(the garage pokes out in front making the house design like a cleaver with handle). My ex was sleeping in the room with his bed to the blade wall when I separated from him and then when he left I moved into that room and had all sorts of losses happen to myself including health. When I moved things around as she suggested (which her method doesnt use a compass and goes by the enterance to the room and is quite easy) things automatically started improving. My health, my support system, I was on disability and got off and got a job, the contension in my life with my ex left and he left me alone, money got amazing and I went in one year from being on disability and renting a home to buying my own... I truly recommend her techniques. Hard to believe changing furniture around can change your life but I guess life is like dreaming and everything is symbolic and energy, and you can use the dream, energy and symbols to understand and to manifest...
Good info spoiled by bad editing.......2002-10-28
I'm halfway through reading this book, and I'm starting to skim because it's REPETITIVE. There's some good info here, but you'll have to get through the clutter to get to the content, which is especially unfortunate for a book about feng shui.
excellent.......2002-09-29
This book was excellent. I loved the way she integrated the different areas of energy healing.
BHS Feng Shui Really Worked for me!.......2002-08-12
in 1999 I read Nancy SantoPietro's first book, and was so interested that I called her for a consultation. I was very unhappy with job, my home, my health - Nancy took the time to explain why Black Hat Sect Feng Shui works and how it worked and gave me a list of things to do. Well since that time, I have a new job, my apt. is always neat - no stagnant energy - and lo and behold, my bouts with bronchitis have ceased. When this new book came out, I was eager to buy it and read it, because it makes so much sense. It is honest, readable, and you can tell that she wrote the book wanting to help people, not just because Feng Shui is "hot" right now. She is one practitioner that really cares about her clients. I highly recommend her as a Feng Shui practitioner and both her books are very, very easy to read and her advice is also easy to follow. My life has improved tremendously since SantoPietro's Feng Shui expertise touched my life and I hope others will be encouraged to read her books so they too can be helped!
Excellent--Best Book Yet!.......2002-08-07
Feng Shui and Health: Anatomy of A Home is the best book I have read on the issue of Feng Shui and health. Like Nancy SantoPietro's other book, Harmony By Design, it presents concepts in an easy-to-absorb, step-by-step approach. It's almost as if she is right there with you, walking you through exactly what you need to do to assess the health of your home and improve your health using Feng Shui concepts.
I love her perspective that specific areas of the home correspond to specific areas within the body-from a biological perspective as well as by looking at the chakras or energy system in the body. As a trained Feng Shui consultant, I have never heard this perspective from anyone else-it really takes Feng Shui one step further and is a great way to combine Feng Shui with other alternative modalities of healing.
This is an excellent book for anyone with a real interest in the topic of Feng Shui, anyone who has already read basic books on the topic and is now ready to go one step further-and DEFINITELY anyone who is looking for new and alternative ways to treat specific health conditions. SantoPietro combines Feng Shui with information about the possible physical, emotional and spiritual underpinnings of illness in a way that really makes sense. This book helped me improve the energy and general "feel" within our home, expand the way in which I work with clients and look at physical healing from a whole new light.

Steak and Lobster or Baloney and Cheese.......2004-02-17
A well-written book, nicely organized with good examples of the how and why. As a new boater with enough experience to understand the limitations of meal preparation on a boat I found this book of great help. Nice chapter on charter provisioning. If you are very experienced or passage making I don't think it will be much help. I originally found this book written up in a US Power Squadron magazine. Glad I clipped the article and finally purchased the book. I certainly will be much better prepared.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Book Description
This book starts with the basics of free-machine embroidery and leads on to advanced techniques. Heavily illustrated with colour photographs, it includes many of the author's own ideas to make embroidered pictures stand out sculpturally. Building up techniques with textures and applique are explored, together with the use of thick threads, both wrapped and applied, stumpwork and fabric sculpting. The use of painted backgrounds and layers of semi-transparent fabrics add to depth and mood. This book can be a stepping stone to the development of readers' own ideas in this growing art, which is not tied to traditional ways. Two very helpful charts allow you to tell at a glance how the basic stitches are achieved, and how they can be used creatively.
Customer Reviews:
The Magic of Free-Machine Embroidery.......2005-10-22
Good read. I enjoyed the techniques, the color, and lots of pictures. Very good for anyone wanting to get into this sewing technique. It makes you want to pull out the machine and get started. Would recommend.
Beautiful Book for Looking or Learning.......2003-08-21
As I've stated in other reviews, I've been doing freehand machine embroidery for 20 years, back when books on the subject were basically nonexistent. My background has been more heavily in applique and thread painting.
Like the excellent Alison Holt book on machine embroidered landscape work, Ms. Curran's art uses manipulation of the basic background prior to machine stitching. However, rather than using only silk and dying it, she also uses cotton and some other fabrics and paints them rather than dying them. She also uses application of multiple fabrics prior to stitching. It appears that her technique is somewhat more flexible.
Regardless, the results are stunning. Her techniques and works are shown to best advantage in the dozens of color illustrations throughout the book. I've certainly spent more on books that have much less visual content.
This book will serve as an excellent primer and introduction to those interested in embroidery by machine. It also demonstrates with clarity that a large financial investment in a computerized embroidery machine IS NOT at all necessary to produce artwork anyone would be proud to claim!

Book Description
Based on the author's detailed diary, personal encounters, and keen memory, this book is a record of the inner history of the critical years of social and political upheaval that accompanied Japan's first encounters with the West around the time of the Meiji Restoration.
Sir Ernest Mason Satow (1843â1929) was a member of the British legation in Tokyo for twenty-one years.
Customer Reviews:
Japanese history comes alive.......2003-08-10
If you are interested in Japanese history this is a great book. It gives a firsthand account of events between 1862 and 1869 from the perspective of a foreigner, which covers the very important period of Japan opening to foreigners and the overturn of the shogunate. Sir Ernest Satow was witness to many of the important events that formed modern Japan in his function as a translator for the British Consulate. The book reports his various travels through Japan as an official, his interactions with members of the different Japanese clans, negotiations between the foreign representatives and the Japanese government, including the first audience with the Mikado granted to foreigners. The book makes history come alive and fills it with real-life people. It also shows firsthand the difficulties of foreigners in understanding the very different culture of Japan, at a time when there wasn't even proper teaching material to learn the language (not even a dictionary) to make this process easier. A great book for anybody who wants to further his or her understanding of Japan.
