A genuine, matter-of-fact look at life before, during, and after infantry duty abroad. Finding this collection has been a personal delight because the author was my freshman English instructor. The day that he read the title story aloud to us was a sobering one and a favorite of the whole semester.

Most inspirational and informing geography text ... ever!.......2000-02-15
This book covers all aspects of a famous geographer's life within the geographic discipline. Not only is it well written, it confronts issues within the discipline head on, regardless of any agenda ridden consequences from other geographers. This book provides an overview of what Peter Gould learned on teaching, learning, diffusing, and analyzing geographic principles and methodologies. Without a doubt, this is the best geography text I ever purchased, and it is has reinvigorated and uplifted my spirits in my personal pursuit to become a professional geographer. The how, why, when, and what of a geographer's life work and achievements are documented in this easy to read, nonesoteric, text. Must reading for any undergraduate thought class! This coming from a recent BA graduate. You will not regret owning, much less rereading, this book!

The book is divided into 5 sections - Graduate School - Beyond Graduate School - Writing - Editorial and Grant-getting Secrets - Academic Survival When this book was published in 1989, it was immediately recognized as meeting a disciplinary need. There has been a tendency in academic geography to believe that our students attain a necessary degree of professionalism as a simple byproduct of fulfilling degree requirements. In fact this is seldom the case. On Becoming a Professional Geographer was the right tool at the right time. Kenzer's collection provides a valuable introduction to a fundamental tool set for aspiring geographers. The first section of the book addresses many of the basic challenges for surviving and even prospering in graduate school. I would recommend these readings to anyone seriously interested in graduate education in geography - at least in North America. The second section concerns getting a job, including a review of opportunities and challenges for neophytes. Section three contains the chapters that I recommend most often to my own students. These are concerned with the arts and skills associated with writing. Several of the discipline's best share their experiences and advice. The suggestions and guidelines are sound, and are produced in a style that is accessible and encouraging. This section alone makes the book worthwhile reading. The fourth section concerns survival in academia. There is little in the content of this book that will not have aged well. The reprinted book will make this resource available to another generation of geographers who stand to benefit substantially from the examples and advice provided. Any geographer will find something of value in On Becoming a Professional Geographer. For some, the book will make life a whole lot easier.

This is a great guide. I received my copy in 1977 when my daughter was born. I used it for years! Loved the flow charts. Definately eases the panic of parents. Explains so much! I have bought several copies of this book-first for friends in the 70's having their children, and now the updated book for the next generation of new parents....our children having children.
Doctor in the House.......2007-08-15
This book is like having a doctor in the house. My pediatrician took me more seriously when I called because I only called or visited when it was truly necessary. This book is so helpful in the way it works you through the problem and informs you of what to expect when you do have to visit the doctor. I highly recommend this book to new parents; it will give you more credibility when you visit the doctor and you are not seen as an anxious new parent.

I bought this book 27 years ago when I had my first child. I loved it then and love it now. I give it to every expectant mother I know. Our doctor was surprised that a new mom would know exactly what to ask and what information to have on hand. It has an easy to follow format with questions and guidelines for the taking care of your child. The book helps the parent know when to call the doctor or when to head to the emergency room. The book of course has been updated but the information from my original book is just as valuable. I still use it today to answer those important questions...virus or bacterial infection?

This book is a great reference source for first time parents. I used the first edition of this book many years ago and loved it. It was the first book I thought of giving to my son and his wife after the birth of their first child.
Best Book Ever.......2007-05-26
I received an early edition of this book when my kids were young, and it got me through some tough times. I've been giving latter editions as gifts to new mothers, who are as pleased with it as I was. What I like best about the book is its flow chart format. For example, "does your child have a fever?" Depending on your answer, it directs you to additional questions that help you decide whether to call the doctor immediately, call for a future appointment, watch for additional symptoms, etc. Very easy to understand.

I already have "Take Care of Yourself" and I worried that it would be essentially the same information-- trust me its not, this is an excelent resourse for a home with children. It also includes a section on Parent Skills which covers Pregnancy, Labor, newborn care, growth and development, personality development, school, finding a health care provider,staying healthy and your home pharmacy. Then theres the section of common complaints (emergency, injury, poison, allergies, fever,ect.) And the third section is a space for family records. I'm glad I have both books, but I'm most glad I have Taking Care of Your Child. It was definatly worth it.

We too, received an earlier version of this book back when our first child was born. We have used this book so often the pages are worn down and out and we needed a new copy. We were both surprized and happy to see many more editions have been released and updated since our copy. We had absolutely no hesitation in purchasing a copy. We have used this book more often than anything and is a constant companion, also when we go on vacation. This is a great gift to give a first time parent and is very basic for the non-medical people in your household. An all round great book for reference and reading. Each area describes in detail the symptoms of common medical problems. The hospital should give you a copy of this book to every parent when they leave the hospital. I guess we will wear out this book too any buy another in 12 years.
BEST book for a new Mom and Dad! I couldn't live w/out it!.......2000-08-18
I was a typical new Mommy in May of 99. I would panic at the smallest things in my son. This book lists various symptoms of ailments and has a decision tree as to when you must call the doctor. This prevented me from making unnecessary calls to my advice nurse and doctor's office. I LOVE this book and will give a copy to all my friends who are expecting or already have a new baby.
A CLASSIC - THE BOOK YOU'LL KEEP.......1999-12-08
It's been almost 18 years since I was given an earlier edition of this book. For those of us who have little patience or time for chatty anecdotes, the authors provide a decision tree for every sickness and problem you will probably encounter as a parent. The most remarkable aspect of this book is that it becomes a teaching instrument for your child - my daughter and I read the decision trees together, learning how to make decisions about a medical problem she was having. A copy of this edition is sitting on her bookshelf at college! She packed it, saying that she'll never outgrow it. Buy this for yourself or for new parents. They will thank you.

I received the 1988 version of this book back when my first child was born. I have used this book more often than anything. It has been by my bedside for 8 years! Now that my brother and sister-in-law are going to have their first child, it is at the top of my list of gifts to give them. There is a wealth of information for the new parent. It describes in detail, what the symptoms of common medical problems are. Even if you don't know what is wrong with your child, it prompts questions of you that help you figure it out.

Whether you follow Pam and Peggy-- fly with flylady-- or what ever you do-- the kitchen needs a plan of it's own!!
This book helped me organize my kitchen layout- use storage space effciently- keep the room clean and shiney-- create delicious, nutritious dinners (without having to run to the store first!) AND-- didn't leave me a slave to the stove and kitchen sink!
If you have read other Sidetracked Home Executive Books- you won't find repetition, this was written to follow their first book, and does so beautifully. It is filled with the wit and charm we've come to expect from Peggy and Pam and plenty of down home wisdom and good ideas.
Highly recommended for the side tracked- overwhelmed-- wonderful creative woman who yearns for simplicity and success!

I have been stamping for a year, and enjoy learning new techniques, getting tips, and seeing examples to get some creative ideas of my own. This book is organized, informative, beautifully illustrated, and has easy to follow directions and tips to make all my projects come out looking good. This book would be excellent for experienced or beginning stampers.

The book has nice photographs and examples of stamping, but doesn't have enough information about the techniques nor the supplies used. I didn't like it. I thought I would learned everything for stamping but this is not the right book. I think I would keep searching in other books.

Excellent!.......2003-09-07
Lots of fun ideas, techniques (e.g. embossing, using a brayer, making envelopes,using windows), uses of different textures, etc. Has clear step-wise directions on how to do certain techniques. Not so complex that a beginner couldn't easily grow into this. I really like the discussion of visual appeal that is peppered throughout.
More for Intermediate or Advanced Crafters.......2003-06-16
On first glance at the table of contents, this book may seem to be for crafters of all levels, but I think it is best for those who already know how to stamp. Overall I think this book is useful, but it has a few drawbacks mixed in with some good advice and projects.
The first 17 pages of the Introduction could have been condensed into just a few. Also, I would have rather had pictures of the tools and techniques mentioned in this section, rather than just representations of finished products. I did think that the second half of the introduction was more informative. I especially liked the section on the elements of design.
In the Simple Stamping section Ritchie does not clearly list materials or take you through the stamping process at the time you most need it. I can understand not doing this later in the book for the more advanced projects, but I wish she would have included more pictures of intermediate stages at this point. You might ask yourself how hard can stamping be? However, to newbies such as myself who do not know much about inks and papers and such, more information would have been helpful. I do like the general tips she has scattered throughout the book.
The last section of projects is titled Frames and Backgrounds. This section contains the more advanced stamping projects. It is broken up into three smaller sections titled Embossing, Punch Art, and Special Effects. These projects all involve different layers of paper, ribbon, charms. By the way, all the projects in the book involve stamping on paper, but some of the techniques could be easily translated into projects using other materials.
In the appendix there is an Illustrated Glossary which is very nice and a list of sources. These sources should be fairly recent because the book was published in 2001.
I think people new to stamping may want to learn basic techniques from another book, but this book would be a good one to go back to after gaining some experience. This would make a nice addition to the collection of intermediate and advanced stampers because Ritchie has some really nice projects.

A repackaging of the same old "positive descipline" drill we've all become so familiar with. This book will be most helpful to parents that are completely clueless. Who doesn't know by now that parents need to "provide love, affection and concern" and that we need to help our children "build self esteem"? Skip this one and pick up "One-Two-Three Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12", by Thomas W. Phelan for practical solutions to typical child rearing problems- without the guilt!

I thought I was doing a great job with positive re-enforcement and using time-outs, but I found the information in the book very useful. I learned more effective methods of positive re-enforcement. I also learned why more traditional forms of discipline don't work. I never agreed with those forms of discipline, but now I have a great resource to point out to people when I am criticized for my methods. My kids are very well-behaved and respond wonderfully to these methods.
This book has easy-to use tips for the frustrated parent........1998-07-01
I teach parenting classes to parents of juvenile delinquents. Though they're resistant and unhappy at having to attend the seminar, "Eight Weeks to a Well-Behaved Child" breaks through their anger, giving them usable ideas on how to better deal with their defiant teen. After reading the book and completing the short homework assignments, most parents reported feeling extremely competent about their parenting skills. This book is just what they needed!
It may sound crazy, but this book has changed my life!.......1998-06-24
I am the mother of 3-1/2 year-old twins. Several weeks ago Iwas ready to throw in the towel in the Discipline department. "Mychildren never obey me. They don't listen to anything I say and hardly ever cooperate. Nothing I've tried has worked. I feel like a failure as a parent." My screaming had escalted to new heights, and I had even resorted to spanking my children in frustration and anger. I felt downhearted about myself and my twin daughters.
Desperate and depressed, I picked up this book. Its titled seemed like too much to hope for, but it promised a concrete program with "homework" assignments that would give me new parenting skills week by week. Now, several weeks later, we are a changed family. The techniques that Windell teaches are so specific and so effective that you will begin to see results almost immediately. For the first time, an author addressed MY personality as a parent (I was definitely an "Active Intervener"!). Of course I knew that I didn't want to spank my children, but had anyone ever really told me HOW not to and still get results? Not until this book. Yes, I had used time-outs and positive reinforcement, but not with any lasting effects, until this book told me EXACTLY how, when, and why, and just as importantly how NOT and when NOT to use those techniques.
Now my tirades are down, their compliance is up, we are communicating, and everyone is happier. I am so proud of all of us! I thank this author and recommend this book wholeheartedly to ANY parent, especially those who don't believe in corporal punishment and need guidance on how to achieve other methods of effective discipline.
This book is a useful guide for both parents and teachers........1998-04-23
While I was immediately turned off by the seemingly impossible title of this book, I soon found it to be one of the most beneficial books on this subject I have read. As a teacher in an alternative high school and the parent children with disabilities and disorders, this book gave me a clear framework to guide me in making the most of the time I have with both my students and my sons.
If you are looking for a way to "fix" your child, this book won't help you unless you are willing to make some changes. It puts the responsibility for making things in your family or classroom work firmly back in your hands, where it belongs. You are given explanations and examples which ring true. The chapter summaries and "Homework" assignments help keep you on course toward your goal of helping to form socially acceptable behavior in the children for whom you are responsible.
