A riveting account of a young boy's endurance .......2005-06-13

Once Upon An Evil Time is Dieter Steiner's personal and gripping story of how he grew up in a Germany dominated and corrupted by Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party. Related from the perspective of a boy, Steiner's first-hand experiences starkly reveal the social, cultural, and political insanity spawned by legalized intolerance and lethal prejudice. Diane Marcou provided essential assistance to Steiner in recapitulating his boyhood memories of what it was like to forage for food by day and huddle in a cellar by night as enemy bombs pounded terror and devastation into his German city. Steiner (now retired and living in Florida) has provided a riveting account of a young boy's endurance during a time of horrific changes that is accessible to readers today, with a detailing of his personal journey from prejudice and bigotry, to tolerance and empathy. In this time of world wide terrorism and murderous intolerance, Once Upon An Evil Time is very timely and highly recommended reading.

Best childhood asthma book out there........2006-01-26

Excellent and perhaps the best resource out there for any parent with a child that suffers from asthma. Dr. Rachelfsky very clearly outlines everything that you may want to know, and even takes away a lot of the mystery from the myriad treatments for asthma.

Written in plain language, the book leaves you with plenty of detail but never leaves you confused.

After reading through the book, you will better understand what asthma is, how it's treated, and more importantly make you able to work WITH your doctor and ask better questions.

You'll also be able to decide if your doctor is providing the best care available.

Overall, this is a must-have book if your child has asthma... and after reading it, you'll belive that you can control asthma and asthma doesn't need to control you!

I was recently hired as spirit sales person and needed to learn more about the subject i was selling. This book was very useful for me and contains a lot of great information about the history of spirits and how they came about for today's consumption.

This book helped me with my quilt stitch, but there is just no way a book can really teach a person to quilt. You need to be able to see it in action. But from this and another book I bought I now know I was pulling the quilt too tight in the frame. Beyond the actual quilt stitch there were many great tips. I am glad I bought this book, but I wish my grandmother was here to teach me the actual stitch.

Why is this book so good?.......2004-12-15

Here's why: 1. It's easy to read. The writing is there to convey information in an understandable easy way. I couldn't put the book down...it's that good.
2. The information is EXCELLENT. Few, far too few books are able to pack in good solid information you can really use. I was thrilled to get some solid infomation and why different threads, batting, etc., are appropriate for hand quilting. 3. In this book you won't have to plunder your way through useless paragraphs to get to the important stuff. It's right there without wasted wording and reading. 4. It's logical and makes sense. What a novel idea eh? 5. There are diagrams where needed and they do help. 6. The layout is excellent and comfortable. 7. Here is the biggie...YES it did help me, very much. I strongly recommend this book for quick solid information on threads, needles, fabric, thimbles, marking tools and batting. I found the section on marking especially helpful.
Thank you Roxanne...or rather your daughter for forcing you into writing this book. You go girl!!

The aim of this paper is to demystify some of the popular myths related to tropical soil fertility management that have gained hold in the development community and are often being promulgated by NGO's and development agencies in the tropics. Negative nutrient balances at farm scale or at larger scales are very often presented as proof that soil fertility is at stake in SSA. However, nutrient balances at plot and farm section scale are not always negative. In areas with large nutrient stocks, short-term nutrient mining is fully acceptable. Fertilizer use continues to face considerable controversy in SSA. In this paper, we demonstrate that fertilizers rarely damage the soil; that fertilizers are being used in SSA, often with favourable value-to-cost ratios; and that fertilizers do not cause eutrophication in SSA. Rock phosphates are abundantly present in SSA but most are poorly soluble. Adding these phosphates to compost heaps does not enhance the short-term availability of their P. Although organic inputs are essential soil amendments besides fertilizer, organic inputs alone cannot sustain crop production due to limitations in their quality and availability. Organic resources can also potentially stimulate harmful pests and diseases. Legumes are often advocated as important sources of organic matter but not all legumes fix nitrogen, require inoculation, or are a source of free nitrogen, as even green manures require land and labour. Certain grain legumes with high N harvest indices do not improve soil fertility, but remove net amounts of N from the soil. These myths need correction if we are to harness the role of science in the overall goal of assisting farmers to address the acute problems of poor soil fertility for smallholder farmers in SSA.

The objective of this paper is to compare soil fertility evaluation based on experience and knowledge of smallholder farmer communities with the evaluation by scientists based on soil analysis and model calculations. The role of the smallholder farmer community in soil fertility evaluation and management was examined from two 'research for development' projects in northern Tanzania. These are the African Highlands Initiative (AHI) and the Soil Water Management Research Group (SWMRG). Participatory approaches were applied by both projects. Farmers' experience and knowledge of local indicators of soil quality were used in identifying soil fertility constraints and in generating resource flow maps. The farmers' evaluation of soil fertility was compared with soil analytical data and with calculations of maize yields by the model QUEFTS. Farmers' indigenous knowledge in soil fertility evaluation mostly agreed with laboratory analysis and model calculations by QUEFTS. Model calculations identified potassium as the most limiting nutrient in the highlands in northeastern Tanzania for yields less than 3tha^-^1 and phosphorus for yields higher than 4tha^-^1. In Maswa (Lake Victoria Basin) nitrogen was most limiting. Given that farmers' evaluation of soil fertility is relative to what they see around them, there is a need to verify their observations, but also the interpretation of laboratory data by models like QUEFTS requires continuous and critical validation. Both projects have shown that there is scope to reverse the trends of declining soil fertility in smallholder farms in northern Tanzania. Essential was that the interaction with scientists has built confidence in the farmers because their knowledge in addressing soil fertility constraints was recognized.
