Book Description
From the time she was a girl, Jane Goodall dreamed of a life spent working with animals. Finally she had her wish. When she was twenty-six years old, she ventured into the forests of Africa to observe chimpanzees in the wild. On her expeditions she braved the dangers with leopards and lions in the African bush. And she got to know an amazing group of wild chimpanzees -- intelligent animals whose lives, in work and play and family relationships, bear a surprising resemblance to our own.

My Life With The Chimpanzees.......2007-07-29
This book is a great introduction to Dr. Goodall, physical anthropology, and primatology. Because it is written by Jane, the insight into the lives of the chimpanzees and the environment in general gives us her own personal message of hope and preservation for all creatures and places.
Excellent autobiography for young people as well as adults........2004-03-12
My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to ...to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role model of determination, compassion, and wisdom.
A Heart-warming Adventure.......2004-01-22
An excellent book! Reading about the extraordinary life Jane Goodall has led is fascinating in itself. Add to it the personalities of the chimps you get to know as you read the book and the adventures Jane Goodall has experienced, and you have a fascinating read. Other reviews recommend this book to children, I recommend it for adults as well. I am thirty-something years young and cried when I read parts of this. Dr. Goodall's love for these animals really comes through.
Boring!.......2001-11-13
This book was so broing I couldn't even get through the whole thing. She was putting me to sleep!
never forgotten!.......2000-06-08
This is a beautiful book, grasping your atention and holding your hand thru a fantastic journey into Africa, and into the chimpanzes of the Gombe. You will get to meet all of them, and even see how they are like, observing the individual diferences of their behaviour. Parents: please purchase it for your kids! Kids: get your parents to buy it for you! Inspiring! I am now 22, but I must have been 10 when I first read this book (not this edition of course!). I still purchase Jane Goodall's books...and I'm following the dream she helped inspire: to go to a place no one can pronounce to study an animal few people care about...
Book Description
Sheila Siddle's life was changed forever one fateful day in 1983 when a local game ranger brought a battered, malnourished chimpanzee to the door of her cattle ranch in central Zambia and asked her to do whatever possible to save it. As Sheila and her husband nursed it back to health, they treated the young chimp they would name Pal as if he were a human infant -- feeding him medicine and bottled milk, sharing their bed with him at night, and carrying him on their backs until he regained the strength to survive on his own. From these humble beginnings Sheila and David Siddle would go on to launch the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, an internationally acclaimed animal refuge that has grown to become the home for more than eighty chimps, one disarmingly domesticated hippopotamus named Billy, and a variety of other endangered animals. Currently the largest primate sanctuary in the world, Chimfunshi has been honored by the United Nations Environmental Programme as one of the Global 500 and called by Jane Goodall "the most wonderful place on earth." In My Family Tree is the uplifting story behind one woman's transformation from a grandmother on the brink of retirement to an international animal-rights activist -- and the unforgettable chimpanzees she has come to know and love along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Heart-Warming, Inspiring, and Compassionate.......2002-12-29
Sheila Siddle and her husband, David, are an amazing couple. They show that life is not over when you are at a "retirement" age. They created a whole chimpanzee sanctuary at such an age. Love, compassion, determination, and strong opinions of what is right and wrong all allowed the Siddles to reach out to animals in desperate need. In doing this, they also touch everyone with whom they come in to contact. Mrs. Siddle's book allows them to touch a great deal more of us. Thank you for all of your efforts and for this great book Mrs. Siddle!!
A Must Read.......2002-04-01
In this beautiful memoir, Sheila Siddle takes readers on magical journey--to Chimfunshi, a wildlife sanctuary Sheila and Dave Siddle founded in Zambia in 1983. Siddle's honest account of their work on behalf of chimpanzees will make you laugh out loud at the wonder and joy of working with wildlife. Siddle's prose also brings the battle for chimpanzees, which is far from won, into vivid and tragic relief. Filled with both humor and profound courage, this book is an inspiring must read for anyone who loves chimpanzees and all wildlife.

Book Description
When Jill Fleming obtained her bachelor of science degree in dietetics and a master's degree in nutritional sciences, she found herself carrying an extra 40 pounds. Since her plan was to work with overweight people to help them lose weight, Fleming knew she needed to examine her own lifestyle.
She began with simple changes: cutting back on junk food, drinking more water, moving her body. Her weight started to melt off. Fleming went on to develop the THIN CHOICES® weight-loss and maintenance program based on her own success, the success of her weight-loss clients over 11 years, and numerous surveys of thin people. Here she reveals her life-transforming approach to permanent weight loss.
The book is divided into 17 chapters, each describing how the habits of "thin" people keep them that way. From "Thin People Don't `Diet'" to "Thin People Don't Go to Bed Full," from "Thin People Eat Chocolate" to "Thin People Drink Water," you'll soon learn exactly what you need to do and you'll understand the reason. Easy-to-understand analogies and visuals will help translate often confusing scientific nutrition information in layman's terms.
Latter chapters include recipe alterations and menu ideas, a summary of the THIN CHOICES program, and tips on maintenance once weight loss has been achieved. A suggested reading list provides additional resources.
Fleming writes, "It has been said that `where the mind goes, the body will follow.' Believe that you are a thin person; begin living like a thin person and soon you will become that thin person." And it truly does seem that simple.
Customer Reviews:
It makes sense.......2007-04-13
The book is not going to tell you anything revolutionary but employs sound common sense with lifestyle changes that are proven to help you lose weight. I especially liked what she had to say about identifying the feeling of hunger, only eating when hungry, and stopping when satisfied (even if you leave food on your plate). It basically shows you how being conscious of your choices and thinking things through rather than acting on impulse can lead to healthy behavior.
A Solid Guide To Living Healthy.......2006-03-23
Jill Fleming's book is a common sense approach to living healthy and losing weight~in that order. And it isn't difficult to accomplish these goals if we just apply a few simple lifestyle changes which Jill details in "easy to digest" form. As I was reading, I kept thinking to myself "this makes total sense, this is do-able". I even highlighted my favorite points and reference them from time to time.
It was an enjoyable, easy read and helped to kick-start my resolve of being a healthier person. It's also a wonderful gift for anyone you care about and want to be healthier.
Finally, a simple, common-sense approach to weight loss........2006-03-18
No gimmicks, no forbidden foods, no endless chapters of vague promises about the program to be described later in the (usually too large) book. This is a slim volume of tips and facts that make perfect sense and are completely doable.
The author is a dietician who ironically packed on 40 pounds obtaining her bachelor's and master's degrees and has been through the weight-loss process herself. Unlike most "diet" books, the testimonials are kept to a minimum and there is no sales pitch for packaged foods, tapes or DVDs.
Each short chapter outlines an important step to permanent weight loss in straightforward language, and the chapters address psychological, social, and physical aspects of achieving weight loss in a healthy way.
Whether you need to lose weight because you feel unhealthy, can't deal with the huge restaurant portions presented these days, are overstressed or too busy to think about your eating habits, you'll find the information in this book helpful.
Takes you back to common sense .......2005-10-24
This reminds me of things I was taught when I was a little girl by mother. The simplicity of eating and staying thin before we even realized the medical reasons or the explanation and understanding of what makes us fat. We have been given so much bad information with fad diets with self proclaimed cures and treatments when it is very simple. None of the diets out there tell you to stop eating when you are full. None of them tell you to listen to your body. There are bad fats and there are bad carbs but eating healthy and not eating too much is important too and not over feeding your body. This book will get you started on small changes at a time that will help you behave and eat like a thin person until you are a thin person. It also helps you and teaches you to indentify the reasons why you abuse food. The author is also a caring individual. I e-mailed her with a question and she replied to my e-mail the very next day with an answer and words of encouragement. That in itself is encouraging. I am sick of people getting wealthy on this growing epidemic. Every other TV commericial is trying to sell you something. You buy them all and you are still fat. If you want the refreshing truth...read this book! It is easy to read and to understand.
Commonsense advise for permanent weight loss!.......2005-03-27
Jill Fleming a registered dietician with an MS in nutritional science developed the THIN CHOICES program. This program reveals the habits of thin people.
In her book "Thin People Don't Clean Their Plates", Fleming reveals her techniques. The book opens with inspiring quotes from Jill's clients. In the 17 chapters that follow, Jill explains exactly what thin people do that helps them stay that way. Though the 136 page book is slim, Jill gets right to the point instead of including the extra fluff many other "diet" books do. She doesn't spend time writing about why all the other diets out there (except hers) don't work and she avoids a lot of scientific, technical chatter.
Chapters include Thin People Don't Diet, Thin People Carry Snacks, Thin People Don't Go to Bed Full, Thin People Eat Fruits and Vegetables and more.
The bottomline is the commonsense that prevails throughout the book. If you want to lose weight and maintain it you will have to eat less and/or move more. Jill tells you simple ways to do this. I especially liked her information on walking. One thing Jill shares is that a 155 pound woman who adds 1/2 hour of walking to her daily routine with no other dietary changes can lose 26 pounds a year. Sounds very doable to me!
Fleming encourages you to give up dieting and adapt an approach that you can stick with for a lifetime. Simple suggestions to incorporate into your life for wellness and a healthy slim body.

The trend towards cooking and eating according to the seasons has been steadily gaining momentum, and it's no wonder. A fresh, deep red, perfectly ripe tomato in the middle of August seems a different species altogether than those insipid, crunchy, watery specimens we see in the supermarket in January. In The Farmer's Market Cookbook, Richard Ruben goes one better. A chef and food consultant in New York City, Ruben conducts "Green Market" classes at Peter Kump's Cooking School. He's shopped at farmers' markets all over the world and has put together a beautiful collection of simple, clear, easy-to-follow recipes that take full advantage of the kinds of specialty produce available all across the country.
Divided into sections for spring, summer, and autumn, this little volume is peppered with poetic notes and introductions by Ruben, who is obviously inspired by the produce he finds. Fava beans must have "a full allotment developed within." Lavender transports him "to languid, sun-drenched days." Choosing wild mushrooms, his "mind was now conveyed to a moist, shadowy forest." He's even included a number of food-inspired haikus for good measure!
But even if you don't appreciate his poetry, Ruben's recipes are well worth a try. Ingredient lists are short and the instructions are simple--if the produce is delectably fresh, the argument goes, what more do you need? Spring offers dishes such as Fiddlehead Fern Risotto, Lamb Marinated in Tropical Juice (with fresh mint and spinach or baby bok choy), and Wilted Escarole Scented with Garlic. Summer's bounty includes Grilled Summer Corn and Tomatillo Relish, Grilled Chicken Breasts with Summer Squash, Gnocchi with Cherry Tomatoes and Sage Butter, and Lemon Verbena Sorbet. And in autumn there are dishes such as Quince and Pomegranate Chutney, Kale with Caramelized Onions and Portobello Mushrooms, and Stuffed Dumpling Squash.
Fortunately, most of the ingredients called for are available in supermarkets, so even if your idea of fun is not a Saturday morning at the market, you can still easily create these seasonal dishes at home. And for those who love nothing better than to wander through the stalls, chat with the farmers, and find a new vegetable or herb at the local farmers' market, chances are you'll find a simple recipe here to highlight whatever you discover. --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
Cooking seasonally means having a keen eye and a sensitive nose as you traverse the aisles of nature's store. The harbingers of each season are color-coded - spring's plate is drenched with verdant tender stalks and gentle herbs; summer is resplendent with myriad bold reds, oranges, and yellows; autumn is rich with umber root vegetables and a second hooray of green leaves. Understanding this spectrum is an essential starting point to setting a menu. The Farmer's Market Cookbook will guide the home cook through the ripening seasons and serve as a road map allowing him or her to navigate any local market - be it farm stand or grocer's aisle. Chef Richard Ruben offers dozens of simple, elegant recipes that celebrate the gifts of nature's cycle from spring (fiddlehead fern risotto; fried green tomatoes; lamb marinated in tropical juice; rhubarb and almond crisp) to summer (strawberry tomato salsa; chilled cucumber/mint soup; grilled chicken breast with summer squash; lemon verbena sorbet) to autumn (ginger butternut soup; curried brussels sprouts; venison sausage stew; crisp apple towers). Ruben also provides additional information on the origin and proper selection of produce, hints for putting up flavored vinegars and oils, and historical facts about food. The Farmer's Market Cookbook presents an original approach to modern cuisine that hearkens back to a simple time when the land around us provided our meals, while also helping to fulfill our eclectic current cravings. (81/4 X 81/4, 202 pages)
Customer Reviews:
Great for NYC cooks.......2007-02-10
Great book, especially for anyone who shops at the Greenmarket at Union Square in NYC. I've taken several classes from Chef Richard, who teaches recreational greenmarket cooking classes at ICE, and they're even better than the book.
Real Food... Real Recipes...Real Passion...Richard Ruben.......2001-05-28
This is a cookbook that people who really love food in it's purest form must have. Richard Ruben translates his enthusiasm for the farmer's (or ethnic) market into simple recipes with sophisticated flavors that sing. His appoarch to food re-affirms that old adage, simple is better. As you read through his personal collection of recipes, you want to make every one. But must do so season by season to get the best results. In this day and age of hundreds of cookbooks, Ruben distinguishes himself quietly and with authority, reminiscent of the early days of Alice Waters when passion for food and the best ingrendients were the only motivators. If I could only have one cookbook and a market, it would certainly be this one. BUY THIS BOOK FOR THE SUMMER and continue to use it through fall and winter...
A Must Have.......2001-01-18
My self and many others think that The Farmers Market cook book by one of the greatest cookbook authors Richard Ruben is a MUST have. Myself and many others also think that this book is one of if not the best cookbook that has come out this year and one of the best cookbooks of all time. If you like Healthy, fun, GREAT food you must go out and buy this AMAZING book.
A Look At The Man I Know As My Uncle.......2000-11-23
There's so many things that I can say about this book, it combines great recipies with a great style of writing to get the reader really interested in his/her cooking. But I don't want to review the book on how good the food is or how great the writing is because that's already been done. I would just like to congratulate my Uncle on a great book even though he put my Aunt and Cousin's full names in the book and only my families last. For anyone who loves food this is a great book and a great gift.
Fantastic ways to cook the best nature has to offer.......2000-11-23
This cookbook is magnificent! Fun, wittily written, simple to follow, Richard Ruben focuses on enjoying the fresh goodness the earth offers us in each season. It's about tasting and exploring what's in front of us, presented by the growers themselves. Easy-to-follow recipes, ideas, charts, seasonal suggestions....it's great. I'm not much of a cook and I used this book to wow a dinner party with pheasant, curried brussel sprouts, & individual squashes stuffed with fennel, apples, & carrots. It's a valuable, exciting, DELICIOUS standout in a crowded field.

Give New Life to Your Wardrobe.......2003-03-05
This was a great read and I do mean read. Probably the first instruction book that I've ever read cover to cover. Normally I would leap to the photos and after finding one that caught my eye, I would then look for the instructions.
It was not the case with "The Great Put On". This book would be a must for anyone considering making something different. I can see amazing possibilities just hanging in my closet in the form of clothing items that haven't seen the light of day for a few years.
If you've put on a dress size or two recently, I'm sure you must have some of your favourite things still waiting for the day when you'll lose that weight. Ha - I'm still waiting but can now see being able to alter a few things quite easily to make them wearable - NOW!
I would recommend this book to anyone considering designing for a living. So many innovative ideas that could be shaped into your own original designs without too much trouble.
If you want to add something truly unique to your sewing - this is the book for you.
Now, not to put a damper on this review, but it could have used just a few more colour photos of completed garments.
Great ideas to make simple garment coture.......1999-05-25
This book has some fabulous ideas for using unusual collectables as buttons, other jewelry and small objects to take simple garment and make them one of a kind.
Directions and ideas are great but they are for intermediate or advanced sewers. However, even beginners can benefit from the ideas and realize that patterns are a start to sewing not an end. That simple to complex modifications can be made and these take the ordinary to the extraordinary. Directions are minimal but the ideas open up a new level of sewing and creating -- the craft of sewing is elevated to the art of clothing.
Facinating book well worth the expense and reading. Wish there were more pictures and more explicit direction but a great book.

Book Description
Even in crowded metropolitan areas, Japan's temple precincts preserve not only architecture, but the garden traditions of earlier centuries as well. To step into a temple garden is, in effect, to tread the paths of Japanese aesthetic history. This time travel experience is not unlike venturing into a medieval church situated in a modern Western metropolis. The recognized religious traditions survive in the layout and rationale of Japan's gardens: Shinto, Buddhist, and Confucian. This book explores the distinct priorities and vocabularies of these traditions as expressed in the elements of garden design, historically tracing their shared features and their interactions at particular sites. Amply illustrated, it orients the reader to the different functions of gardens, such as whether they are to be looked at or walked in.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent orientation to the view, function, and flow of traditional Japanese gardens.......2005-07-04
Written by a practicing landscape architect and scholar of East Asian and European garden history, The Japanese Garden: Gateway To The Human Spirit is a beautiful tour of spiritual gardens in Japanese temple precincts. Covering gardens connected to Shinto, Buddhist, and Confucianist traditions, The Japanese Garden offers black-and-white photographs, diagrams of garden layouts, and in-depth discussion of how each garden incorporated the spiritual traditions connected to its cultivation. An excellent orientation to the view, function, and flow of traditional Japanese gardens, whether they were designed to be walked in or simply observed, The Japanese Garden is a superb source of both reference and inspiration for garden designers of all skill and experience levels.

A small gem is sparkling bright !.......2002-08-14
Leverage Your Time, Balance Your Life I found a nice, little, motivating and easy to read book with a lot of practical and sound advise. The author covers topics such as making time to dream, for priorities, healing, freedom, fitness, romance, family, work, fun, spirit and reading. Definitely a book to re-read and refer to from time to time. Enjoy!
Fantistic Must Have Book.......2000-11-10
This has to be one of the best motivational books I've ever read. It is short, to the point and funny (just where it needs to be). I would highly suggest this book to anyone looking to balance his or her life. I found the book to be extremely motivational.
