Customer Reviews:
NO PROGRESS IN AMERICA: WILLIAMSON'S PATRIOT'S PROGRESS.......2001-11-07
If the Great War may be said to have produced anything (besides carnage and irresolution), it is certainly the inexhaustible spate of talented English authors that first comes to mind. Those that lived (Graves, Sassoon, Blunden) and those that didn't (Owen, Brooks, Thomas) left a literary legacy of war poetry and war prose that is still unsurpassed.
The nature-loving, writing-obsessed Henry Williamson is not often included along with his fellow soldier-scribblers and is, indeed, barely known outside of England. Despite a canon well over forty tomes, Williamson's work has drifted in and out-of-print in the United States. His majestic WET FLANDERS PLAIN, which chronicles his somber return to the former battlefields after a twelve-year absence, cost this author (dollar amount) used in paperback and much anticipation as it slowly arrived from somewhere in Australia. Most of his novels are missing-in-action from used bookshop across America and must be ordered from abroad.
Fortunately, THE PATRIOT'S PROGRESS is still available (well, sort-of) and perhaps not for long. Perhaps his best-known novel in America, PATRIOT'S tells the story of Private John Bullock and his progress from a boorish London office job to the battlefields of France. Enhanced by the marvelous Masereel-esque woodcuts of
William Kermode, the novel details in sparse verbiage the life of the men in the trenches. Although not as detail-oriented as Blunden or Graves, it is nonetheless of interest to both the reader of literature and the historian and has been taught in university courses on The Great War. Williamson is an extremely important writer whose works certainly deserve a wider audience.

Book Description
In January 1914 Henry Williamson enlisted into the Territorial section of the London Rifle Brigade, and as Private 9689 was mobilized with the regiment when war was declared on 5 August. After training, he left for France on November 5th and soon afterwards found himself on the Front Line. At Christmas, he witnessed the famous Truce, in which soldiers normally fighting each other, for a few brief hours greeted each other as ordinary men; carols could be heard drifting across the wire in the silence. Promoted to lieutenant the following year, he served until the end of the war, with a long stint as Transport Officer with the Machine Gun Corps at the Front during the first half of 1917, and was present briefly at the German spring offensive of 1918. Demobilized in September 1919, along with many young men, he felt a sense of dislocation on returning home, and his experiences during the war profoundly affected his thought and writing throughout the rest of his life.

Book Description
Offering fascinating insight into a man who has significantly raised the profile of astronomy among the public, this autobiography of Patrick Moore spans 80 years of social history with wit and charm. Moore describes his research to map the moon, which began prior to the NASA Apollo missions during his undergraduate years at Cambridge University, and was eventually used by Russia to correlate the first Lunik 3 pictures. Moore also chronicles his work on BBC's The Sky at Night, where he began as the presenter in April 1957 and continues today, the show having landed in the record books as the world's longest-running TV series with the same presenter.
Book Description
In this remarkable book, Ellen Handler Spitz shows how to promote children’s creative and emotional growth by making the most of the unlimited possibilities of everyday experiences.
Through delightful anecdotes about real children and their treasures, bedrooms, play spaces, music, scary things, and birthday parties, The Brightening Glance will inspire you to create a life of wonder, inventiveness, and cultural enrichment for your child.
Customer Reviews:
A Book Every Parent Should Read.......2006-02-27
Parents tend to smile inwardly as they read Ellen Handler Spitz's books.....they are both enjoyable and challenging....and open the eyes of parents to new dimensions in their children's lives. I recommend reading Inside Picture Books as well as The Brightening Glance to parents that I work with. Both books reveal the depth of children's minds and feelings to their parents and help them to understand how to help their children develop greater emotional and imaginativecapabilities.
A treat for parents hoping to enhance creativity, subtlety, and imagination in their chldren.......2006-02-22
The Brightening Glance opens a path into the world of children in a unique and delightful way. Parents and other interested adults are treated to the secrets of tuning into a child's perspective on the world, and then see how to enrich the child's outlook in subtle and supportive ways. This book parallels the noted child psychiatrist Stanley Greenspan's ideas of reciprocal interaction in "floor play" - but it is concerned with a more elaborated version of developing children's interactions and creativity.
Parents are under so much pressure today that they often rush through the time they spend with their children. The Brightening Glance can help them to slow down and absorb the richness of the world, for their own benefit as well as for their children's. Those who are familiar with Dr. Spitz's earlier work, Inside Picture Books know already what kind of pleasure awaits them in reading this new book.

Customer Reviews:
Great French Food, Doable Every Day.......2006-03-21
This book is a combination of two earlier cookbooks: Le Cordon Bleu Quick Classics and Le Cordon Bleu Classic Light.
I love great food, and I like cooking, but I don't have the time (or desire) to spend too much time in the kitchen every day. This book offers the solution: easy recipes with run-of-the-mill ingredients, that taste absolutely great (so much better than takeout food and with not much more effort).
The book covers a lot of classics in easy and tasty recipes: Beef carpaccio, Chilli, Paella, Creole Jambalaya, Coq au Vin, and a personal favorite, Chicken Jalfrezi, just to name a few. Besides these, lots of recipes of less well-known, but equally tasty dishes!
Most of the recipes are accompanied by a picture of the dish on the opposite side, always a plus for any cookbook, and the index has entries for all ingredients.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves great food, but is not quite confident in the kitchen, or anyone who wants easy great recipes for everyday.
A set of recipes which minimize shopping and prep times while retaining the classic French-flair cuisine features.......2005-09-07
Le Cordon Bleu is the most famous culinary arts institute in the world, offering courses in schools around the world: it's also famous for classic French dishes which typically require in-depth cooking skills and lots of time. Cooks who want the flavor without the prep hours will thus welcome Le Cordon Bleu Quick & Easy: a set of recipes which minimize shopping and prep times while retaining the classic French-flair cuisine features. From Pan-Fried Scallops with Mango and Salsa to Thai Chicken with Peppers, both French and international flavors blend in delicate sauces and spices. Blend in lovely color photos and you have a real winner.
Recipes for the rest of us.......2005-07-22
I have tried many of the recipes in this book and the results have been amazingly good despite my limitations as a cook.
Once or twice a month I like to serve something other than the "same ol' same ol'", but I don't want to work too hard to get good results.
So far, no leftovers at all!

Customer Reviews:
Sophisticated but (mostly) easy receipes.......2002-11-26
I'm a pretty fair cook, but in the country style. If a recipe involves smoked breast of duck or goat cheese, I'll look for something else. Those ingredients, and similar, figure in a number of the admittedly tasty-looking dishes featured here, but there are also a number of others that are surprisingly simple and quite good -- at least, those I tried. Rather than the usual division into chapters by primary component, this book is organized into "Appetizers," "After Work," "Weekend Entertaining," "Vegetables, Salads, & Accompaniments," and "Desserts," plus a final section called "The Basics," which covers roasted garlic, pesto, basil coulis, bouquet garni, etc. I made the "Argula with Sauteed Potatoes & Bacon," which was easy and excellent, and the "Pasta alla Diavola," in which I included rather more dried chiles than called for, with great success. About one-third of the recipes are pictured (mouth-wateringly), and nearly all are accompanied by Chef's Tips and suggested variations. Except for the editors' somewhat boorish assumption that anything cooked in French fashion is better than anyone else's version -- even "Corn & Potato Chowder," which is about as American as you can get -- this is an above-average cookbook which I shall return to regularly.
Good quick recipes and ideas.......2002-04-09
I found this to be a good book, while not necessarily presenting anything that out of the ordinary it did provide good solid recipes that can be prepared in short amounts of time. It's not a tremendous amount of recipe, but some of the recipes offer variations. Another good feature of this book is that it provides two pages of additional suggestions and variations at the end of each chapter. As another reviewer mentioned, the book is written for British audiences, this is a bit annoying but fortunately quantities are listed in ounces as well as grams. I haven't had too much trouble finding any ingredients listed.
In case you buy it here are some translations/substitutions:
aubergines-eggplant
courgettes-zucchini
lardons-crumbled pieces of crispy bacon
fresh coriander-cilantro
rocket-arugula
prawns-shrimp
demara sugar-brown suger
caster sugar-superfine sugar
double cream-heavy cream (not quite the same fat content a double cream, though)
you can search the web for "ingredient substitution" to find others.
Dont always go by reviews!!.......2000-12-01
This book received excellent reviews from other readers and so I ordered it. I was very disappointed when it arrived as this is very much a beginners cookbook which is probably fine for newly marrieds. There are no new exciting recpies - most of them rehashed old ones we are all surely bored of by now...... Secondly this book was obviously written for the UK market ( I come from there! ) as it talks about several ingredients that you either just cant buy here or you have to special order them. Also anyone who has ever eaten precooked vacum packed new potatoes know how truly disgusting they are to anyone one who has even the slightest discerning palate. This book belongs in one of those close out book stores - not Amazon!
Quick and easy impressive meals.......1999-12-19
I love to cook but rarely have the time to fix anything really elegant. This book has been a life safer when I've needed to make something special on short notice (ie when the in-laws drop by).
I've even used this book to teach my husband how to cook. He's usually terrified of the kitchen, but found this book so easy to use that we now cook together every Friday.
A great Cookbook.......1999-12-15
I am an amateur chef and have an abundance of cookbooks. This is the one I use the most. Quick, easy, simple and the dishes are superb. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
One of England's foremost bird photographers presents here for the first time a study of wading and shore birds, with over a hundred full-color pictures. The pictures of these beautiful feathered creatures, favorites of birders and wood carvers alike will delight the eye while providing an important resource for naturalists, artists, carvers and taxidermists. Over 38 varieties of shore and wading birds are shown, most in several poses and from different perspectives. Along with the photographs, Roger Everett presents his observations about the birds and tips on viewing the yourself. Yet the key ingredient in his book is his naturally dynamic photography. Other of his photographs have long been seen on the pages of exclusive nature magazines and on the walls of collectors. Roger Everett's photographs, the results of his keen eye for beauty, his technical brilliance, and his appreciation of the wonder of these small creatures, are available in book form for all to share.

May 1978. Dredged Material Research Program Technical Report D-78-17. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 179 pages plus.
Book Description
Share the wonder and adventure of southern swamps, ponds, and rookeries through Janie's captivating nature photography of wading birds and soul-soothing inspirational essays. "These birds are some of the most beautiful and graceful creatures on earth. Known to bird lovers as "waders", they include the Snowy Egret, the Blue Heron, the Roseate Spoonbill, and others too numerous to mention. Brilliant in plumage, graceful in flight, serene in repose, these birds congregate by the hundreds in rookeries (breeding grounds for different species of birds) where one is afforded an unparalleled opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat."
Book Description
You'll appreciate this book for its great projects and its great reading. A founding member of the Lacy Knitters guild, Mary Schiffmann was a tireless collector of lace patterns and a delightful storyteller about her life and craft. Nancy Nehring has lovingly collected Mary's legacy, patterns ranging from simple edgings to an elaborate christening gown, and accounts of her life starting with her birth to missionaries in Japan and following her long life of lacy knitting in America.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful lacy knitting.......2007-08-24
While this book was not exactly what I was expecting (Ohrenberg shawls, etc.), it was indeed highly useful. Mary Schiffman provides many different types of lace for knitted lace, including edging or borders, samplers, shawls, and a skirt. Her style is relatively straight-forward yet not for the faint of knitting heart. There is much to be learned in this book and it has many useful yet beautiful applications. I would recommend this book for the more advance knitter who is looking to explore the possibilities of knitted lace and design garments using lace techniques.
Very few projects .......2005-08-07
The cover is deceptive in that it shows several lace doilies, but what you see on the cover is what you get in the book. Most of the stitch patterns are found in most pattern books. The only part of the book that is truly unique for the experienced lace knitter is the few lace edging patterns. Not worth 17.95 for those few patterns.
The Lacy Knitting of Mary Schiffmann.......2005-04-06
This book is very well put together. I have been knitting for 20 years and love the patterns in this book. There are a number of advanced patterns for more experienced knitters, something difficult to find these days, and a number of simpler patterns for novice knitters. I only wish it had more patterns and hope that they will come out with a second book.
Buy This Lace Knitting Book First.......2000-01-22
I highly recommend this book as either a first lace knitting book or to add to a collection because it is both helpful and beautiful. I have purchased other lace knitting books but because of their complexity I had never used them to produce a piece of lace. The author of this book, Mary Shiffmann, taught lace knitting and includes in the book a list of projects designed to help novice lace knitters develop their skills. I was able to pick up this book and without other help teach myself to knit lace. Also helpful is that all the patterns are charted. The book is an interesting mix of the author's personal history, discussions about lace, and lessons. It also contains an excellent variety of patterns (from easy to complex), projects and suggestions. I plan on working my way through many of the patterns.
The book has an artful approach that shows the beauty of hand knitted lace.

Book Description
What has happened to the American family in the last few decades? And what are these changes doing to our children? David Elkind, renowned child psychologist and author of The Hurried Child, has devoted his career to these urgent questions. This eloquent book puts together all the puzzling facts and conflicting accounts to show us as never before what the American family has become.
Customer Reviews:
a book that, in its quality, does indeed stress .......2007-09-03
A mediocre piece of writing cluttered with generaliztions.
It should have been an essay, then I wouldn't have had to painfully endure over two hundred pages of poor arguments.
As a child of this so called "post modern" period I can faithfully say this book does not apply to me. THANK GOD.
How traditional is tradition?.......2002-04-06
The trouble with Elkind's work - all of it - is that he assumes it's natural for a child to have a free period of childhood, unconstrained by the needt o earn or the needs of the family as a whole. Even in recent years this has only ever been available in fairly affluent societies, and before the beginning of the nineteenth century it was available to very few, and not seen as desirable by many either. Most children in traditional rural families worked, though not unbearably hard unless in a mining area or so poor that they were apprenticed to chimneysweeps. Most of them had to take responsibility for younger siblings and for animals too. Many had paid jobs as casual labourers or apprentices from an early age. And their mothers worked too - in mills after industrialisation, on farms or as servants before it. The family and lifestyle Elkind takes to be central to 'normal' childhood is as recent as railroads, and most of the world's population would still regard the whole setup as a luxury.
Does he believe that all children from before 1800 were pathological spcimens?

A Fine Analysis and A Lot to Ponder.......2001-05-23
I grew up in the 50s but raised my children in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. My feeling is that Elkind has analyzed the changes in American families very accurately. He has NOT said that everything was wonderful before nor that everything is dreadful now. But I do believe he is correct when he says that the imbalance in the 50s was in favor of the child and the imbalance now is in favor of the parents.
I don't consider myself any sort of fanatic, but I was a stay at home mom myself and our children seem to have turned out very well. I agree with the reviewer who said that it is not always necessary to have two incomes to support a family. It IS however necessary to make intelligent choices about what a family wants and needs. There is a lot that makes life worth living that doesn't have to be paid for with money. Maybe having a mother at home is the greatest luxury a family can choose as far as impact on life style and living. Kids don't need multiple after school classes and sports events to be well developed or happy. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have any. But people can choose and plan and have a wonderful life without two incomes.
This book will give you many different ways of thinking about what a family is, what a family can be, what individual development can mean. If you are serious about making the best choices for your family, Elkind's books deserve special attention.

It's all about your lifestyle!!!!.......2000-10-02
Although I have not read this book, I feel compelled to provide a "rebuttal" to Scott's views. He wrote that all parents have to work, which indicates to me that he is buying into the great cultural lie that exists today. It is indicative of the parent-centered world that modern America has created. My partner works outside the home, I am a full-time mother. Contrary to what you may be thinking when I make that statement, we are by no means even "middle-middle" class. In fact, we survive on VERY little money at the moment. We simply have undemanding lifestyles! We don't have brand-new cars, we have a very modest home that meets our needs but is not large or extravagant, I don't get my nails done, we don't eat out often, etc. As parents, you must ask yourself honestly which is more important: do you want to live like most Americans (or Brits, or Canadians, or other industrialized countries' citizens), who are in debt up to their eyeballs and push their kids off on strangers to rear them just so you can drive a cool car or have a home that is too large for your needs; or do you want to live modestly, at least until your child is old enough and responsible enough to care for himself, so that your child turns out well-adjusted and secure? Be honest with yourself. Make your own choice. I won't down you for it, but my choice is to live a calm, uncluttered life that will benefit my son.
Book Description
Inch'on was probably the most significant campaign in the Korean theater, as well as being the last major amphibious assault of division-size conducted in the history of warfare. The odds were stacked against the US troops, with virtually no time for training and many of the divisions unprepared for the conflict. The success of the Inch'on campaign is a testament to the sheer initiative of the officers and NCOs conducted it. This book details the strategy and tactics that led to the operation's success, as well as narrating the experience of the battle in fascinating detail.

With Osprey Campaign Series, It 's Always Hit or Miss.......2007-09-25
Two months after the North Korean invasion, United Nation's forces find themselves cornered and barely holding onto a corner of the Korean Peninsula. Douglas MacArthur pulls together ad-hoc units to re-form two new divisions. Poorly trained and unprepared, these troops launch a bold amphibious operation behind enemy lines. Their attack catches the North Koreans by surprise and soon their enemies are racing them to the Chinese border. This is the stuff of great military history.
Unfortunately, Gordon Rottman is not the best writer to tell this interesting story. As so often happens with Osprey Campaign histories, the book soon becomes bogged down in too much detail and the drama is lost. Typical is the following paragraph:
"In the evening on Wolmi-do DUKW amphibian trucks landed 1/11 and 2/11 Marines's howitzers to support RCT-5 and RCT-1, retrospectively. In addition, 4/11 landed on Beach Red in support of RCT-5 on D+1 and they were followed by the 96th Field Artillery on D+2 to support RCT-1; both were armed with 155mm artillery."
I am sure that Gordon Rottman really knows his stuff but his level of microscopic detail is better suited to a Staff College account of the Campaign rather than to a book geared towards the general reading public. If you are looking for a more readable account of the battle, I suggest that you would be better served by reading a general account of the Korean War. David Halberstam has a new book out on the Korean War and that is where I will be looking.
STRATEGIC SURPRISE!.......2006-10-11
The war between North and South Korea has been going on for six decades. The armistice has been in effect for over 53 years, despite numerous violations by North Korea. North Korea's economic collapse and its claim to posses both atomic bombs and missiles capable of reaching the United States or any part of South Korea and Japan make understanding the events of 1950 to 1953 relevant today. Gordon Rottman's "Inch'on 1950" is an excellent starting point.
The Inchon operation was a surprise for a number of reasons: the Americans were "too soft to fight," the day of the amphibious assault was over, Inchon was the wrong place to conduct an amphibious assault because of the extreme tides, and the post-World War Two drawdown had left the United States with insufficient amphibious ships and Marines to conduct an amphibious operation.
On pages 22 and 23, "Inch'on 1950" gives some idea of how rapidly the United States responded. On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. On August 23, after North Korea repeatedly defeated United Nations forces, the decision was made to commit a US Marine and a US Army division and other UN forces to the Inchon operation. That operation was barely three weeks from decision to execution. On September 15, 1950, Marines stormed ashore at Inchon. Anybody familiar with military bureaucracy would be astonished at going from complete surprise to counter-invasion in less than 90 days. The units were transferred by ocean vessels at the blinding speed of about 12 knots (about 15 miles per hour) AFTER the ground units had been rebuilt from a skeleton cadre to combat strength. The amphibious fleet for Operation Chromite didn't exist on June 25, 1950, when North Korean tanks poured across the border and plunged into Seoul, South Korea's capitol city.
The alternative to Operation Chromite was a frontal assault through the formidable North Korean positions. With the 20/20 hindsight of history, perhaps that wouldn't have been the disaster perceived at the time--the North Korean forces were exhausted, their supply lines hammered by UN air power, and no reinforcements were available. In contrast, the UN forces had Japan as a sanctuary, protected by undisputed control of the sea and air in the Korean area.
Peter Dennis brings this campaign to life through maps and vivid action paintings. Rottman provides order of battle tables, a chronology, and descriptions of the commanders and forces on each side. The North Korean side isn't fleshed out well, but that's because North Korea is still at war--they haven't opened up their unit histories to outsiders, yet! Period photographs and the blow-by-blow description of the preparation, assault, and breakthrough to Seoul make this as real as it gets without winding up with wet feet. I was in South Korea during 1977--the one-page description of the battlefield as it stands today is accurate, but sparse. Today, South Korea has forests!
Inchon was one chapter in the long Korean War saga, a story that is still on-going. Gordon Rottman's "Inch'on 1950" is a good starting point.
An excellent concise history of an important campaign.......2006-06-08
Osprey has finally started doing a few titles on the Korean War and Gordon L. Rottman's Inch' on 1950 is a fine addition to the Campaign series. This volume is well-researched and although a bit dry at times, is well-written. This campaign is intriguing as one of the few occasions in post-WW2 history where US military power was able to achieve decisive operational results in a conventional battle. Inch' on 1950 is an excellent concise history of an important campaign that shaped the Cold War.
Rottman begins Inch' on with a rather lengthy 14-page introductory section that outlines the events that led up to the campaign, including the North Korean invasion and the defense of the Pusan Perimeter. The author's description of the rapid formation and dispatch of the 1st Marine Division - which he rightly says was "a phenomenal feat" - is a good example of the latent military power inherent in a great power. The section on opposing commanders is decent, but overly-US heavy; the author might have looked to POW interrogation reports for names of some of the enemy local commanders. The next two sections on opposing forces and opposing plans are both very good. Rottman mentions that 32 LSTs were manned by Japanese crews, which is rarely mentioned in most histories. In opposing plans, Rottman details the formulation of the Operation Chromite plan without unduly lionizing Macarthur (although he might have mentioned that Macarthur had significant experience with the operational use of amphibious assaults, including the Hollandia campaign in 1944). Rottman also notes that US intelligence preparation of the battlefield was very poor, with little knowledge on the height of the seawalls or enemy dispositions. Nevertheless, despite lack of adequate training and preparation, D-Day at Inch' on was a great success and Rottman notes that excellent US logistics and close air support made the difference. The aftermath sections covers the battle for Seoul. The volume includes four 2-D maps (strategic situation; Inch' on-Seoul area; Inch' on landing; the drive to Seoul), three 3-D maps (D-Day at Inch' on; Han River Crossing; the Battle of Seoul) and three battle scenes (Beach Red Seawall, 15 September; tank ambush at Ascom City, 17 September; Dog Company pinned down outside Seoul, 26 September). The artwork by Peter Dennis is superb.
