Book Description
STAYING ALIVE
Commander Leigh Wade outwitted death through five harrowing SF tours in Vietnam. n 1965, during his second assignment in Vietnam, Wade volunteered for duty with the newly arrived 173rd Airborne and participated in the first battalion-size helicopter assault in Vietnam. Later he helped set up a Special Forces A-camp and worked with the 1st Cav, eventually taking part in SOG operations, where he was a recon team leader. In early 1966, after joining the highly classified all-volunteer C-5 unit, he engaged in unconventional warfare and clandestine ops in Cambodia, roving deep into areas crawling with NVA.
Unlike many others, Wade lived to tell about what he saw. Captured in these pages is the horror, courage, and carnage of every moment spent trapped precariously between life and death.

The Protected Will Never Know.......2002-07-15
Reading a book by Leigh Wade is like listening to the man speak; it is a good writing style. Those who were not over there will feel like they were after reading this, or any other book, by Mr. Wade.
there are better books.......1999-08-01
the protected will never know because they will not be able to finish this book. I read half of this book but had to stop. I have read numerous books on Vietnam & I would not recommend this book to a friend.
FROM THE WHORE HOUSES TO THE KILLING FIELDS........1999-07-24
Whore houses, booze and killing fields. This book gives good insite to the failure of this war. The negative attitude reflected towards other arm forces (other than the Special Forces) shows are own internal conflicts. "Well Written."
SFC Wade tells a good story for all Special Forces readers........1998-05-05
Leigh Wade was at the RECONDO School in 1966-67 at the same time I was. Later we served in the 46th Special Forces Company in Thailand. Leigh is for real--he lived what he writes about and it really shows. Buy this book! LTC Jeff Berry (ex-SSG Berry of 66-68).

Book Description
Entering the Army in June of 1969 and ÂIn Country by November, there began the journey. Vietnam was more than just a war. Vietnam was also the oppressive heat of the jungle, the bugs and mosquitoes, the snakes, the swamps and rice paddies, the monsoon rains and the constant grind of ÂHumping the Boonies. But surviving Vietnam was more than dodging a bullet, it was about surviving your Tour of Duty with your mind and body still intact.

Grim realities of life and death on the battlefield.......2004-04-06
Engagingly written by Don Meyer (a combat veteran of the Vietnam War), The Protected Will Never Know is a revealing memoir of the horrors of a grueling war that oppressed not only one's physical life, but also one's spirit. The grim realities of life and death on the battlefield are not abridged in this compelling firsthand testimony showcases in a collection of personal stories based on Meyer's "in country" time from 1969 to 1970. The Protected Will Never Know is a welcome contribution to the increasing library of Vietnam War combat biographies, military autobiographies, and battlefield memoirs.
The Protected Will Never Know.......2004-02-12
I really enjoyed the content of this book compared to other books I have read on the Vietnam War. I recently seperated from the military myself and was really interested in the aspect that the author took in telling of the everyday life of a military member in a combat zone. I could relate with the details of how things are different as far as protocal of the military lifestyle when you are in a combat zone and then returned back to the "real world." I am used to the telling of the Vietnam War in a broad commercial way but this author really put a reality to the telling of his story as far as specific details of the feelings that I'm sure most people were feeling but were too proud or scared to let their true colors show. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been there or has served in the military.
Most outstanding real account.......2004-02-12
I read with great interest "The Protected Will Never Know". I too was in Vietnam around the same time and was awed at the realistic portrayal given by Mr. Meyer as to the conditions of war. Hollywood glamorizes the entire event, but Mr. Meyer puts it into its true perspective.
He did not hold anything back and touched on many of the emotions; fear, jubilance and sadness; brought out during the Vietnam War. I had lost many of the memories until Mr. Meyer brought them back in his words: in crystal clear fashion. Thank you for telling the real story of what life was like on a daily basis.

The publisher does a disservice to author and readers.......2001-04-30
I have not yet read this book; the above star rating is arbitrarily placed to make it possible to post this note and should not be taken seriously. I am sorry to note, however, that the publisher's ignorance of their own product is made evident in the following quote from their review, above: "This is the first book to examine the life of this brilliant but difficult man." That is certainly not so. The late eminent scientist and scholar, Sanborn C. Brown, wrote two biographies of Rumford: "Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford," intended for the serious reader, and "Count Rumford, Physicist Extraordinary," a shorter version intended for the younger reader that, inter alia, omits some of the details of Rumford's extensive sexual adventures. Both are excellent (and the first, at least, is listed by Amazon.) In addition, there are at least half a dozen older biographies of Rumford, ranging from good to boring, and dated beginning about 1845. Rumford's complete works have been published in five volumes. Volume 5 deals with his social innovations, and is fascinating and entertaining reading even for the technically unsophisticated reader.

4th leading cause ?.......2006-11-16
I wondered about this statement describing this book, so I decided to do some reserch: "As liver disease has skyrocketed to the fourth leading cause of death in the United States".
First off, from what I read, liver disease has actually fallen in the U.S. since 1960 (which makes sense, as we live healthier and drink less).
Also, here are the top 10 causes of death in the U.S.: 1. heart disease (by far the biggest one, and totally dwarfs liver disease), 2. cancer, 3. "cerebrovascular", 4. Lung diseases, 5. Injuries from accidents, 6. diabetes, 7. Flu, 8. Alzheimers, 9. Nephrosis, 10. Septicemia.
Nowhere is liver disease found in the top 10, and it is also not skyrocketing. In short, false alarm. Also note that there is some research showing that coffee is very protective of the liver. So if you are concerned about liver health (for example, from alcohol), just drink 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day (unless there is some medical reason for you not to, etc.).
Valuable book.......2005-09-17
This is a good book and it doesn't force you into a sound sleep, while I cannot say the same for other books relating to the body. There are a few recipes in here too.
A wealth of practical, "user friendly" information.......2003-01-03
Previously published as "Natural Liver Therapy", Christopher Hobbs' Natural Therapy For Your Liver: Herbs And Other Natural Remedies For A Healthier Liver is the newly revised and expanded second edition of an invaluable informational resource offering a wealth of practical, "user friendly" information about liver functions, diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis in which the liver is impeded, and accessible, applicable advice for keeping one's liver healthy. Enhanced with information on liver detox, internal cleansing, and fasting, Natural Therapy For Your Liver excellent addition to personal and community library Personal Health and Alternative Medicine reference collections and reading lists.
Book Description
Without realizing it, most adults have hundreds, if not thousands, of gallstones (mainly composed of hardened bile) blocking the bile ducts of their liver. This book illustrates how to recognize stone buildup and provides do-it-yourself instructions for painlessly flushing them out of the body. The author thoroughly explains what causes gallstones in the liver and gallbladder and gives practical guidelines on how to prevent new ones from being formed. He clearly details how gallstones congesting the liver impair proper liver function, which in turn can lead to poor general health and contribute to serious illness. However, the core of the book is the easy-to-follow, all-natural cleanse that has helped thousands of people gain the benefits of a clean, revitalized liver. This preventative health approach promises the reader improved health now, as well as a reduced chance of needing invasive gallstone surgery in the future.

heeee haawwww!!!!.......2007-09-26
This book is the next best thing from the more expensive one's, namely THE AMAZING LIVER CLEANSE and TIMELESS SECRETS OF HEALTH & REJUVENATION. These are essential if you are starting to educate youself in alternative medicine.
Sure the more expensive books are better formatted and such , but if you need the info , this is a cheap way to get it. If your willing to fork out an extra $15 dollars or so I would go with THE AMAZING LIVER CLEANSE. In either case Andreas Moritz produced very most exellent material here of the utmost hihest caliber. Just buy it man!
you never really know yourself.................2007-07-02
I love this book, as it really helped me to figure out why certain fats (soybean oil) gave me problems after eating. It is easy enough to follow, and the amount of problems that can be solved by cleansing are immense. Not for the squeamish or those that care for western medicine. Thank-you Andreas Moritz!

Book Description
The aim of the Controlled Reproduction in Farm Animals Series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. It is effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes. Buffalo, goats, deer, and camelids have also been added to the species covered. The set of volumes will appeal to reproductive physiologists, animal scientists, and workers in veterinary medicine. Individual volumes should also be of value to all interested in the particular species covered.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome Book.......2006-02-17
Alex has done it again. The designs in this book are beautiful and can be adapted to many different projects. Instructions are clear and well written, and include left and right handed instruction. Good for beginners and more experienced redworkers as well. I highly recommend this book.
Inspiring.......2001-09-26
After this book arrived I couldn't wait to get started! The directions are very clear and the samples beautiful.
Casting a New Shadow on Redwork.......2001-08-17
What could be more American than Redwork? How about Redwork with inspiration? Alex Anderson has spun a new twist to an all-time favorite needle art, by producing a clever and creative book on this uniquely American craft entitled, "Shadow Redwork". By including a subtle message of inspiration or love in the background using ecru embroidery, Alex has devised an interesting look, which causes the viewer to ponder more deeply our handiwork. For those of us who labor to produce personalized heirlooms for special folks, a few extra oohs and ahs goes a long way! Ms. Anderson's directions are simple to follow, with some handy tips interspersed along the way. Most appreciated are her Stitch Directions including diagrams for both right and left-handed needle crafters. She includes some simple enough designs for those new to Redwork, including her "Nasturtiums Pillow" as well as the "Seasons Banner", along with some more challenging projects for the seasoned Redwork enthusiast. A tip from one of those seasoned Redwork enthusiasts - when tracing the Redwork part of the pattern, try using a red, .05 Micron permanent pen. If your stitches are slightly off the tracing line, you will never notice! Keep up the great work, Alex; we look forward to your next imaginative quilting venture!
Shadow Redwork.......2001-06-12
Instructions are clear and well written. Some of the patterns are difficult to read the shadow words because of the letters being hidden behind the flowers.
I disagree with Alex's instructions to embroider the flowers first then trace the letters and embroider them. This requires going over the design twice.
Projects are great and general instructions very good for completing them. The patterns may be adapted to any of the projects in the book.
A basic knowledge of embroidery is helpful.

Fighting Chronic Pain.......2005-01-06
"Making Peace with Chronic Pain: A Whole-Life Strategy" by Dr. Marlene E. Hunter, M.D. is an excellent book on pain management. I have found it to be one of the best available. Dr. Hunter is a family physician in West Vancouver and past president of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis. She has written several other works in the field of medicine and hypnosis. This work offers intelligent information on how to deal with physical and psychological pain. Besides hypnosis, the author also discusses pain relief techniques and relaxation techniques.
Alas to be a scholarly work, the book is way too short and leaves the reader asking for more. Although out of print, her Self Hypnosis Tapes/Audio Cassette entitled Learn to Relax: Self Hypnosis & Subliminal Learning is an excellent addition. I met Dr. Hunter several years ago at a conference and was deeply impressed with her background and professional skills. This work should be a part of any chronic pain sufferer's library.

Book Description
Originally published to glowing reviews and literary prizes in France in 1985, this revealing diary not only recounts the moving and tragic relationship of its author, Geneviève Bréton, with the rising young nineteenth-century artist Henri Regnault, it also serves as a valuable historical document concerning the social, cultural, and political life of the French Second Empire.
The young Geneviève Bréton began her journal in 1867 as a consolation for the death of her eldest brother, Antoine. She met Regnault soon after on a trip to Rome. Throughout the next four years of their relationship, Bréton eloquently describes the personal, cultural, and political turbulence that affected her life. Writing against the backdrop of France’s fateful conflict with Prussia and the hardships and dangers of the siege of Paris and the Commune, Bréton, with innate candor and lyricism, creates a text that beautifully illuminates French art, literature, family life, society, and politics of the time. Her poignant account of her love for and engagement to Regnault reveals special insight into the life and mind of an extraordinary, though little known, literary talent. At Regnault’s death in 1871 during the Franco–Prussian War, the expression of her anguish is as much testimony to the political and cultural disorder of the time as it is to her own personal tragedy.
Following Bréton’s own instructions that she left before her death in 1918, this English version of the diary reincorporates material that was deleted from the French edition. Graced by rare photographs of the Bréton family as well as Regnault’s paintings, the book contains a touching foreword by the author’s granddaughter, Daphné Doublet-Vaudoyer. In its first English translation, it is a book for lovers of French life and culture, as well as students of French history; literature, and art.

Better than the newer version.......2007-10-18
This book was trimmed and re-released - Disguised: A Wartime Memoir
This has more detail, including the final two chapters explaining what happened to the family during the Dutch war for independence, and briding the gap between the end of World War II and when the author moved to the US.
BTW - the review of this by BOOKLIST has some glaring inaccurcies. For example, the author was NOT "sent to school to learn Japanese". She had a job as a clerk working with Japanese government, and saw the announcement and signed up on her own - she told her supervisor afterward (she was the first to register). She worked very hard at the course - and that effort is why she became translator and camp clerk.
And her mother was seriously ill from two years before the author was born, i.e., had been ill for 16 years before passing away during a time the family was allowed to live out of the POW camp for over a year.
And about that Japanese soldier's attempted rape - she escaped. You can read the book for the details.
A Teenage Girl's Survival.......2007-08-01
The life of a teenager remembered by herself as a much older woman puts an interesting perspective on this story. As if being captured and held by the Japanese for 3 and a half years at the age of 13 or so is not interesting enough, this girl lived the experience by working in close quarters with the Japanese disguised as a boy for the whole time.
Rita's memories of her early life in this environment were written as a much older woman, but none of the detail of those days has been lost, even though they may at times be overlaid with the sentiments of a much older and wiser person attributed to her younger self.
Living a privileged life as a Japanese interpreter and office worker in the camps, she was not subjected to much of the poor treatment meted out to her fellow prisoners, and seems stunned at times that they should have resented her better treatment. Nevertheless, her achievements at such a young age of learning Japanese from scratch to become an interpreter, holding down a job, helping out her family, negotiating the adult male Japanese world, surviving the difficult world of the internees and staying safe throughout it all are to be respected.
Rita writes about her experience before, during and after the war, with a focus of course on the Japanese run camps, the effect it had on the rest of her life and her resulting belief that that she could do anything with hard work and application.
Recommended for those with an interest in the history of this time and for those who would just like an interesting read.
