        Book Description

Just turned seventeen in the summer of 1942, Varrel Smith who had two older brothers already in the service drops out of his first real salaried job and his upcoming senior year of high school to join the Navy. After just four weeks of basic training he was soon on his way to sea duty. His ship was a highly unglamorous Navy tanker launched in 1917. Fortunately, they built them well then, and it survived two plus winters in the vicious weather of the Aleutian Island chain. There, he was almost washed overboard when reporting for night duty topside. And once the ship barely avoided sinking when a load of ice brought on by a flash freeze brought its main deck dangerously near the water level. There were brief visits to Seattle where the author combined visits home with his earliest experiences at drinking and girl chasing. A night of carousing that led to a complete blackout gave his shipmates good material for teasing him thereafter. Even near home there was a close call when he fell asleep at the wheel driving up into the hills for a visit with his parents. Fortunately the car went off the safe side of the road instead of over the cliff. Released from the rigors of the northern seas, the ship crossed the Central Pacific and took part in the Battle of Okinawa where Japanese suicide pilots inflicted the greatest damage the Navy has ever suffered. His battle station atop the bridge gave him a close look at the carnage around him, and in addition to close calls from the enemy he nearly had his head blown off by friendly fire because some baffles were not properly mounted on the guns below him. After the immense relief of war''s end, the ship took part in occupation duty in Korea. Here the author and his buddies ran across hungry children and handed over all the food they had brought for their lunch. When they left for home at last, these young sailors carried with them an even greater realization of what a misery is war.

          Book Description

In a world of darkness perched on the edge of discovery, Michael Faraday lit up the world of science, contributed to the Industrial Revolution, and changed the lives of everyone on Earth. Now a superb new biography illuminates the life of this amazing, reclusive, deeply contradictory man.

Born in 1791, Faraday was the son of a blacksmith with a thin education, yet he was gifted with a rare intelligence and intuition. He was a devout member of a small Christian sect that believed in the Bible’s literal word, yet he was open to all that humankind could invent from earthly knowledge. He was ambitious and savvy about spreading news of his work, yet he patented nothing and received no personal gain. In short, Faraday personified all the paradoxes of the early nineteenth century, a landscape in which class, faith, and desire clashed.

As apprentice to the esteemed Humphrey Davy of the Royal Institution, he helped discover the miner’s safety lamp, which revolutionized the search for and accumulation of coal, then went on to make a landmark study of induction, the connection between electricity and magnetism, and the idea of the electromagnetic field. From electric motors to precision-made eyeglass lenses to steel razors to liquid chlorine, his inventions–often designed with self-created instruments–have become staples of civilized society, the “roots of modern life.”

While rising in society, Faraday steered clear of politics and the seamy machinations of the material world, staying obedient to a higher authority. Though disdainful of “useless passion” and devoted to his wife, he found a confidante in the bright, liberated, and flirtatious daughter of Lord Byron. Trying to reconcile his severe religion and his demanding work, he eventually suffered a mental collapse.

An acclaimed biographer of artists, James Hamilton now captures the entire fascinating story of this individual and his era. A Life of Discovery is the definitive account of a remarkable man who merged intuition and logic, prayer and deduction.

2 out of 5 stars not enough knowledge on subject.......2006-02-22

Although it might sound as a very good idea, it is obviously pretty brave to write about Michael Faraday when you're not a scientist. Hamilton does complain in the editorial already to have accepted this work, and worthy enough to mention, he does not do a good job. Reading this long book you do get a lot of more or less single informations on the life of MF that taken together do not make up more than a small-minded reconstruction of whome he answered which letter when and using which tone. Pretty few notes on where science came from and what the dream of a final theory was about. Nothing at all on Maxwell and his electrodynamics, this alone is inexcusable. Nothing of course on how the theory failed already with Michelson and Morley in the late 1880's. Einstein, who admired Faraday like almost nodbody else, isn't even mentioned once. We do not get an insight into the Sandemanian sect. What we do get is pages of analysis of random photographs showing MF and others. This book has little understanding of the matter and therefore no life in it. Sorry.

4 out of 5 stars A Good, Popular Biography of a Great Scientist.......2005-07-14

It is a sad fact of modern life--at least in America--that so many of the great scientific minds that helped create our modern life are forgotten. As a high school science teacher, I try to give my students some knowledge of the important figures of scientific history. Standing as one of the giants of nineteenth century science is the subject of this book, Michael Faraday.

Faraday's rise to the top of the scientific world is an interesting one. The son of a blacksmith, Faraday was apprenticed at an early age to a bookbinder. During his apprenticeship, however, he became interested in science through the popular public lectures on the subject and likely through reading some of the books he was binding. As his apprenticeship came to an end, Faraday tried to apprentice himself to a scientist and, through both hard work and good luck, attached himself to one of the most important scientists of the day, Humphrey Davy.

While working with Davy, Faraday learned the fundamentals of scientific research, demonstrating extraordinary ability as an experimentalist. In time, Faraday became his own man, achieving a place of honor at the Royal Institution where he loyally remained for the rest of his career. During that time, he made a number of important discoveries, including the basics of electromagnetism, developing the prototype of the modern electric generator among other devices that will become integral to our modern society. He also made a name for himself as a popular lecturer on science whose fame at the time could only be equaled by Charles Dickens. Through this, he made known his lifelong belief in universal scientific education for the young. Most significantly, he did this all with minimal formal schooling leaving him forever limited in some respects such as mathematical ability.

James Hamilton does a very good job of taking us through Faraday's life with depth but also in a very readable way. He brings out not only Faraday's scientific achievements but also his dedication to his strict form of Christianity (the Sandemanians) and the tension this sometime brought to his life. He showed Faraday's constant struggle against illness and his own limitations. Also, he shows something of Faraday's artistic side and how this influenced Faraday's research, most obviously in his support of the developing science/art of photography.

Though Hamilton's expertise in art gives an added dimension often missing from scientific biography, it also contributes to the two main weaknesses of this book. In general, Hamilton's explanations of Faraday's work is quite good, particularly for the general reader, but he does miss some opportunities. Most noticeably, he gives a very cursory coverage to Faraday's development of the field concept which plays such an important role in physics today. This is quite surprising considering how easily it lends itself to artistic depiction. Additionally, from his previous work it seems he has a fixation on the British landscape artist, J. Turner, and refers to him repeatedly throughout the book (particular in the latter part) whereas I could not see how this contributed in any real way to the story of Faraday.

Despite this, Hamilton has written a very good book here that will hopefully contribute to a revival in interest in this very important scientific figure, particularly here in the U.S. When I traveled to England some years ago I was surprised upon turning over a twenty pound note to see an image of Michael Faraday. Clearly Faraday still retains respect in his homeland. Scientific figures don't command that kind of respect here but Hamilton's book helps to show why they should.

          4 out of 5 stars A worthy book about a worthy character.......2005-06-05

One thing that delighted me about this book and about the person of Michael Faraday was the mixture of science and faith. While these two disciplines have parted ways and are no longer intertwined for many in the modern world, Michael Faraday is an intriguing example of both a devout believer and a ground breaking researcher.
Faraday's story also has immense appeal as it relates his rise out of humble beginnings on the basis of his own genius and merit, in contrast with the lingering emphasis of his time on inheirited wealth and position.
My only criticism is that the author, who evidently has written much in the realm of art history, adds a bit more content on art to this biography than seems justified.
On the whole, I recommend this book as it is a well told tale about a significant and intriguing character whose story is very much worth retelling and considering anew.

I dont understand somthing, why all the time people are saying that this is for people figuting cancer? LeShan in his own words says that cancer is a normal process that is heppening in every body 24 hours a day, it is only the immune system that isnt able to fight the process and as a result what we are calling a diease excist.

I am trying to say that everybody should read and accept what is in this book, the immune system is the gate for everything, dosent matter weather you are figting the "diease" or weather you are an elite athlete needs to strengen his body and mind.

It is up to you weather you use the tools writen here, but it is an eye opening book that tells you how far you can go.

1 out of 5 stars Is this book intended as a joke?.......2004-09-26

I've had cancer (and recurrances) for 7 years, and I've read every book on every aspect of the subject, and this book is the absolute worst I've yet to come across. LeShan writes a weird mixture of vintage voodoo and goofy "new-age" hype. LeShan's lethal psychobabble can be literally deadly as he lures frightened, newly-diagnosed cancer patients into drinking oceans of green tea while while scaring them away from conventional, proven treatment. Avoid this book, and the others like it, unless you want a good laugh.

          5 out of 5 stars Inspiring - entertaining - wonderful.......2004-01-05

LeShan's message is simple -- put your life before your illness. For years, he helped people with cancer to live the lives they wanted to live, to "sing their own song" as he puts it. These people frequently recovered from cancer in the process of working on their lives.

Some of these stories are amazing. The people you meet are ordinary folks with a lot of strikes against them, but they manage to transform their lives and, in a surprising number of cases, cure their cancer.

I apply LeShan's approach in my wellness workshops and in my book, The Art of Getting Well. Get your life right and your health will likely (although not necessarily) follow.

4 out of 5 stars This book offers hope!.......2002-06-23

Cancer as a Turning Point is a well researched, informative and interesting book written by an expert in the field of cancer and cancer research. LeShan is a psychotherapist rather than a medical doctor and thus he approaches the topic of cancer from a different perspective. In the book he provides much useful and practical advice for cancer patients, their families and friends, therapists of cancer patients and medical professionals in the cancer field. This book is packed with information but progress a bit slowly at times. Overall, it fills a niche other cancer books miss because it addresses cancer more holistically and a more emotional, psychological point of view. While not perfect, this book is definitely worth reading for anyone touched by cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Putting It All Together.......2001-02-17

LeShan's book is a excellent review and summary of important concepts in holistic approaches to cancer. He reminds us that holistic medicine rests on four basic axioms: (1) Health requires treatment of all levels -- physical, psychological, and spiritual; (2) Standardized approaches are not helpful -- treatment programs must be individualized; (3) Patients need to be part of decisions, given as much knowledge and authority as they will accept; (4) Everyone has self-healing abilities that need to be engaged.

It is a nice book that gives good information on coloring. However the book is a bit vague, there are a couple of Type-O's, and some of the information is not correct. (Page 28) I quote, "If you do not plan to breed your pets, purchase only females. They will live in better harmony than males." This is incorrect becuse with gerbils, strangely, it is the females, and NOT the males that do most of the fighting. 2 males will get along better than 2 females.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good book for a first-time gerbil owner........1998-03-23

This is not a fabulous book. Of course, it has the usual glossy pictures, etc. but it doesn't give you any really accurate information. It was amusing reading this book, because the book not only contradicted a lot of scientific information, it contradicted itself! Sometimes I felt like it was written by 5 different people who'd never spoken to each other (or owned gerbils) and just slapped together the sections they wrote without checking any of it over. The most confusing thing for the poor new gerbil owner is probably their color descriptions. Over and over they get it wrong! For example, they have a picture of what is clearly a dove, and lable it grey agouti! Later in the book, true grey agoutis, as they are described in the text, even, are labled as "argentes", while earlier argentes were described as the "cinnamon" argente goldens I know and love. Another thing I find outrageous is its suggested breeding method. Placing a single male in a cage with a group of females, allowing him to mate, separate him, then reintroduce him to them once their litters ar grown. What do they mean to do, kill all the baby gerbils in the world? The poor male be mince meat being introduced to 3 *females* (this is why gerbils are bred in pairs, folks . . ), not to mention the fact you NEVER introduce new gerbils to an established group, and NOT TO MENTION that you shouldn't keep 3 females together, especially with a male . . . Granted, it works sometimes, but I would NEVER, EVER suggest to a *beginner* to try it (nor would I attempt such a thing myself). So basically, this book is bad . . . but it's a laugh to read.

                    Book Description

Floyd Cardoz, chef and co-owner of New York City's Tabla restaurant, is one of the most exciting innovators working behind a stove today. And now, for the first time, he shares the extraordinary recipes that have established his reputation. In them Cardoz is able to make the quantum leap between the American palate and his taste memories—the food of his childhood in Bombay and Goa. The collection, One Spice, Two Spice, is an amalgam of two cuisines by a man who has mastered the flavors of each.

This volume of more than 140 recipes is a gift to all home cooks who enjoy the flavors of India but are intimidated by the unusual and numerous spices required to prepare these dishes. Here, Cardoz renders those spices user friendly in a down-to-earth primer and glossary. Then, in the recipe notes, he shows you how to easily integrate these new flavors into everyday meals and dinner-party fare. The techniques—sautéing, panfrying, braising, poaching, and roasting—are not new. The results, however, are astonishing.

Imagine crisp panfried black pepper shrimp, meaty sea scallops seared and served in a satiny sweet-sour glaze, asparagus and morels sautéed in a spicy blend of shallot, ginger, and chile—all of which can be made in no time flat. Other recipes—steak rubbed with crushed peppercorns and coriander, cumin, and mustard seeds, duck bathed in an aromatic orange curry, lamb meatballs filled with an herbaceous combination of fresh figs, cilantro, and mint and then napped with a lush, lustrous green sauce—may require more marinating or cooking time, but the trade-off is Cardoz's three-star-restaurant cooking at home.

One Spice, Two Spice is more than a cookbook. It is a gateway to a different way of thinking about the food on your plate, and it brings Indian flavors into the modern American repetoire.

3 out of 5 stars Far from Exquisite.......2007-07-20

I really wanted to love this book but found myself disappointed. On the positive side, the author, a chef at a New York eatery, Tabla, sounds like a very interesting person. His introductions to the recipes share both his personal story and a little history about the recipe. Unfortunately, none of the recipes I tried justified the time or expense and effort in securing some of the more exotic ingredients. This is not to say that they were bad, they were fair to good. The lamb and chicken recipes were acceptable as was the cucumber soup. The book is heavy on fish but again, the result did not justify the effort. I was disappointed that there were no dessert recipes.

The book contains photographs but they have that dated feel one gets from the promotional magazines they keep in hotels. They are okay but far from exquisite, which describes this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Investment.......2007-02-05

Simply, it's a GREAT book. There are very few books of this category an d caliber in the market ( internationally). It may not be so very simple for a home maker to re create most of the dishes, but, cooking is a about an individual's personality. So, use the ideas contained and get an insight about what all went into the making of the great restaurant Tabla. A great learning tool for an avid cook who want s to play with the nuances of Indian cuisine - with a western perspective. I am sure this book and if there are more to follow will gather a place of importance in the world of Indian culinary references in the western hemisphere
I really wished the authors had put in some more pictures and nicer ( modernized) versions of their renditions at Tabla

I love the way this cookbook brings together two different cultures to produce amazing recipes. I actaully found this book easy to understand because of the full detailed glossary that explains all the indian spices (which not many indian cookbooks do!) My personal favorite recipe is the black pepper shrimp. I have tried this dish at the restaurant, Tabla, and would never think it is possible to make at home but it turns out that it's a really easy dish to prepare. If you want American food with an Indian kick I highly recommend this book!

                                Book Description

The Dictionary of Flavors defines flavors used in foods, beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), tobacco, and pet and animal foods. Comparative flavor chemistry is a very useful tool in evaluating and describing homologous groups of similar chemical structures. Thus, the author has collected the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) ingredients into chemically similar collections, where these structural relationships would dictate flavor attribute similarities. In this way, predictable aroma types can be more easily memorized. In addition to the descriptions of flavor chemicals and natural products, there is also included perspectives from the fields of regulatory, sensory, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, bacteriology, psychology, economics and marketing. In a field, where much of the knowledge is gained by experience, or handed down from mentor to apprentice, often times ideologies and concepts are very personal and empirical. Thus in regard to applications and characteristics, many comments reflect those of the author. At the same time, the reader is urged to reflect his or her own personality and input into interpretation and development of flavor applications. This Dictionary will be useful to food scientist, flavor chemists, food and beverage production personnel, management and marketing personnel, and all those concerned with the flavor of foods and beverages.

My Mother was diagnosed with moderate osteoporosis three years ago. She was prescribed Fosomax which caused severe gastrointesttinal problems. She had always taken a calcium supplement since her nother has passed away from complications brought about by advanced osteoporosis. I searched the internet for a solution and found Ipriflavone. After using it for just 90 days her doctor was amazed that not only had the bone loss stopped but bone was being restored. After another 90 days her finger nails began to grow back hard and thick. They had been thin and brittle--a sign of osteoporosus. This was another sign that her bone was being restored by this remarkable substance. Today, she no longer suffers from osteoporosis and a plague on our family for generations has finally been removed. This book is one of the few that explains how this remarkable supplement was disscovered and brought to the public. Read it! The life you save may be your own.

                                      Book Description

In 1942, budding fine artist E. J. Bird was drafted into the army at the age of thirty-one. He left behind his wife and art but not by choice. The war that " . . . seemed to go on forever" had a profound impact on Bird's life, and he recorded his memories in both his writing and his artwork.

The World War II Diaries of E. J. Bird is more than just one man's depiction of the horrors of war. It is also an inside look at military life during wartime: the USO dances, K and C rations, KP, basic training, barracks life, uniforms, and all the many things that accompanied military assignments during World War II. Amusing yet profound, sincere and poignant, E. J. Bird's remembrance of World War II offers a humanitarian view of war through the eyes of an artist that will linger with readers for some time to come.

World War II Journals Of E. J. Bird holds almost thirty color illustrations to spice the journals of Bird, who participated in the war and who reflected on its meaning and military life in general. Bird's art and stories provide a different view of the war than the official war artist portrays and make a fine supplement to collections on World War II experiences.

There are only three stars shown on the background of the "Stars and Stripes" cover of E. J. Bird's World War II Journal, but I'd rate this a five star book.

It's hard to put this book down. One section leads so seamlessly into the next that before you realize what's happened, it's two a.m. And there hasn't been one shot fired yet! I cheated. I looked at the author's incredible drawings before I read a word. I knew he saw action in the Pacific, but I found the story of how the army trained one reluctant soldier every bit as interesting as the incidents of combat.

I picked up E.J. Bird's "World War II Journals" because I thought it looked like a "fun" coffee table art book. I say "fun" because the cover shows two swing dancers (in the 40s they called it jitterbug) and they both have attitude with a capital A. It was the art that hooked me first. Minimalist line drawings of soldiers working and at leisure, intricate sketches of a city at war, spilling soldiers and sailors and busty women at every corner, and beautiful watercolors (made it turns out with a five color dimestore watercolor set!) of an island at war, its people displaced and suffering. After a very few minutes with the book I discovered that not only can Bird draw, he can write too. This isn't the typical scared-young-kid-thrust-into-a-war-to-become-a-hero type of book. It's the story of a 31 year old draftee who had exactly what he wanted in civilian life and wasn't pleased about the army changing it. Reflections of a man at least ten years older than most of the other authors of such first person accounts makes a readable and sometimes humorous story, and his maturity enables the author to portray the quiet suffering of the native Okinawins. A good read.
