Riding with Stuart.......2002-12-13
A memoir covering a short period of time, May '63 to June '64. Garnett was a clerk and courier, then on Stuart's and briefly Fitz Lee's staff. Written from diary entries in later life, the account keeps pausing as real life intrudes--sometimes for years at a time--and then resuming with marginal notes to the effect that Garnett can't believe it's been so long since he worked on this.
Garnett's memoir includes some decent first-person battle scenes, interesting descriptions of all Stuart's chargers, the feats to be performed in a nineteenth-century tournament, the Wilderness, and Yellow Tavern. It's a good source for anecdotes--perhaps the most special thing it contains is two verses of "Maryland, My Maryland," supposedly written by Stuart himself to his horse Maryland--they're really clever.

Book Description
George Beadle was a towering scientific figure whose work from 1940 to 1960 marked the transition from classical genetics to the molecular era. Among other distinctions, he made the pivotal, Nobel-prize-winning discovery with Edward Tatum that the role of genes is to specify proteins. From 1946 to 1960 he led the Caltech Biology Division, rebuilding it to a powerhouse in molecular biology, and afterwards became a successful President of the University of Chicago. This is the first biography of a giant of genetics, written by two of the field's most distinguished contributors, Paul Berg and Maxine Singer.

Two great scientists on a leader of 20th Century Genetics .......2004-08-13
A page turner on the excitement of uncovering many secrets of life from the rediscovery of Mendel to the threshold of revealing the genetic dictionary and how it is translated into living forms told by two leading biochemical geneticists.
jf from nj.......2003-12-27
High marks for telling an interesting story well. George Beadle was a old-fashioned, principled country boy from Nebraska. But he and a cast of brilliant colleagues revolutionized how biology is done, and that is the highlight of the book. It is best when showing how Beadle got where he did scientifically. George Beadle was a driven, brilliant workaholic who kept his emotions tightly bottled, like his flies, except fpr short, well-directed bursts of anger directed at lab workers for sloppiness. His wonderful institutional personality contrasts sharply with more infamous, disagreeable sorts, like Delbruck and Watson, who appear later in the book. The book moves along smartly and efficiently, but lapses in a couple areas. I recognize this is a book about biology, but it's also a biography, and so Beadle's personal life is fair game, besides being inherently as interesting as much of the later administrative info, in which the book becomes bogged down. So, here goes: Frequent references are made to the unpleasant personality of George Beadle's first wife, Marion. But no attempt is made to flesh this out in any effective way. What did she say and do that was so offensive to so many people. What was her problem? She remains too much of a mystery, given that she was an important part of Beadle's life. This lack of info contrasts with the often overly detailed, and somewhat murky explanation of the neurospora life cycle. I had to read it three times to understand what they were talking about and have taught this stuff for 20 years. The authors are scientists, not historians or novelists, and it shows. Still, it's close to a page-turner for the first half.

A Great Conditioning Book; A MUST Have For Football Atheletes!!!.......2006-06-18
I have looked a while for a great conditioning program for football players and when I found this book, I was amazed by the detail, quality, and effort obvoiusly put into it by the authors which made it a great conditioning book for High School football players and beyond. The authors incorporated not only the physical ways in which to get better but mental ways as well which are both important for conditioning as well as the successful winning of football games by not only being ready on the outside but also believing and knowing you can do it on the inside. The whole conditioning program is, when performed with the best potential and effort, a challenging one that will more than likely get you the preperation you need. These authors, coaches of the University of Nebraska football team which is famous for this strenghth and conditioning program, first introduce you to factors that build on one another to make a great football player and then give a very complete program of conditioning and training including a nutrition and shopping list for best atheletes to use for great energy. The structure of the book and organization is exceptional and it literaly gives you all the information you will ever need on how to prepare for football in any aspect. It contains specific exersises for speed, flexibility, strenghth, and more, and contains workout plans, inconclusive descripiton, and even helpful football tips in the process.
I would strongly recommend this book to any football athelete looking to prepare for football through conditioning at any level because of the very helpful information you will find in this book. I guarantee this book will never sit on your shelf too long if you get it because you will be refering to it constantly. I know I made the right choice by buying this book.
Simply the Best.......2005-05-27
The book "Complete Conditioning for Football" is a must for any football player. Inside includes performance needs; conditiong principles; testing, evluating, and goal setting; flexibility training; lifting techniques; speed drills; agility drills; nutrition and rest; and last but not least conditioning workouts and programs.
Performance Needs:
This chapter includes a performance pyramid which if followed can lead to "making the play", or success on the football field. It includes character, conditioning, ability, practice, game, and with the top brick, performance. Also it breaks down each of the components, exa. Character- belief, resolve, discipline, courage... and gives a descriptive explanation for each of them also.
Conditioning Principles:
This chapter guides you in developing and implementing a program to allow you to peak the four athletic indicators of speed, agility, power, and endurance. It breaks down and explains the principles of specificity, overload, and periodization.
Testing, Evaluating, and Goal Setting:
This chapter outlines step-by-step procedues on how to safely test and evaluate athletes' fitness and athletic abilities so ou can develop the objectives and specifics of your conditioning program. Here it gives some tests, such as vertical jump test, pro agility run test, 10- and 40- yard dash test, 300-yard shuttle run test, and even height, weight, and waist measurement tests. It also gives you percentile ranking charts of all the positions in high school and college. With your test results you can see where you rank among those in the 10-yard and 40-yard dashes, pro agility run, and the vertical jump. Percentile ranks are from 5-100.
Flexibility Training:
This chapter gives you the proper warm-up routine (high knees, heel ups, ect.), stretching routine (partner stretches), and mobility drills that should be done during the conditioning workouts (warm-ups and stretching before, mobility drills after the workout).
Lifting Techniques:
Provides valuable information on proper technique of all the lifts, to warming-up, spotters, breathing, and so on and so forth. Strength training exercises include: explosive, complementary, base strenght, and specialty. Not many weight rooms that I know of have the complementary, or "ground based jammer", so in the workouts in the back of the book give replacements for these lifts if the jammer is not available.
Speed Drills:
Included are 29 drills for speed (2), acceleration (9), plyometrics (9), and resisted speed (9). Also gives the proper sprint technique especially used for testing the 40.
Agility Drills:
Included are 58 drills for improving your agility. The drills include ropes (8), bags (15), backpedal drills (11), cones (12), line drills (6), and jump rope drills (6).
Nutrition and Rest:
Basically describes all the foods you should eat to make it short. This is a chapter you should allow as many people as possible to read, since without nutrition, athletic performance is low. Also gives a grocery shopping list with all the foods listed under the vitamins and minerals it has in them (example: almonds, corn oil, ect. are listed under vitamin e) and a section of drinking fluids and getting plenty of sleep.
Conditioning Workouts and Programs:
Guides you to building a successful conditioning program. Lists all the speed/agility drills and notes which drills are appropriate for which positions. Included are sample programs in development and peak phases for the positions. Also included in this chapter is the lifting programs for the beginner (base, development, in-season), intermediate (base, development, peak, in-season), and advanced (base, development, peak, in-season). This is an absolutely outstanding weight program in my opinion, with lifting days on monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday.
All in all, this is the complete book for any football player looking to get in great shape for the next season. It is mainly a year-round program by giving types of workouts (base, ect.) for each month of the year in which to apply the right workout to. I also recommend the book "52-Week Football Training" to combine the exercises in the books if you want a more varied program. I suggest taking the time to looking into "Jumping Into Plyometrics" for a plyometric program to add into your schedule and "Play Football the NFL Way" for techniques and tips to help you excell in the game of football.
this book helped me greatly.......2004-11-29
This is a great book because the program's strengths are based on what you want to do for football. If you want to get big and strong to play oline/dline then it has a stellar weight program. But if you are looking to develop speed and quickness it has a series of drills for that too. You just have to concentrate on the area that suits your needs the most. Excellent description of all the drills and excersies as well.
Informative Read..........2004-04-04
Gives a in-depth view on football specific training and is helpful in developing a custom program for yourself. All-in-all worth the read.
One of the best!.......2003-05-01
From the school that really started weight traininging in college football, Coach Arthur has done a great job of setting forward the principles that we should use in designing the programs that we use to build our athletes. You need this book.

Finally!.......2000-03-30
It is so good to come across a fitness/workout book that addresses the needs of so many different kinds of people. This book is an encouraging find for the overweight, middle-aged, inexperienced, or injured person who seeks the physique of a football player. Whether the athlete is a "weekend warrior", an occassional player, a scholastic beginner, or a pure professional; this is an excellent training manual. This book can be an excellent tool for people coaching youth, adult independent league, and professional-level football. Of course, it is adviseable to go at your own pace when training and incorporating these techniques into your own workout. It was given a five star rating because of the extreme rarity of finding such an all-encompassing book. Enjoy!

A splendid gift for gardeners.......2000-07-14
With a text that glows as brightly as the book's sumptuous photography, Growing Home is a triumphant celebration of "diversity." But Ms. Price's work is far from mere political correctness; every page is warmed by her deeply felt sense of community with her subjects. From the Russian-born botanist who declares that gardening "is my soul" to the Hmong mother preserving her Laotian heritage and feeding her extended family, these men and women represent "a vast, invisible network of people living full, well-integrated lives." Their serenity and common sense testify that "even in the midst of a culture nourished on fast foods and hurried entertainments, it is still possible to live in concord with the rhythms of the earth." Beautifully designed and produced, the book is a perfect gift for any garden enthusiast...I love it.
Every garden tells a story........2000-04-24
Growing Home is a real treasure of a book. Price has profiled a very diverse group of "transplanted" gardeners--mostly immigrants--who use gardening as a way of maintaining connections between their ethnic and cultural roots and their present-day lives in Minnesota. The profiles effectively turn the subjects' gardens into windows on their life stories, revealing the broader cultural meaning behind the simple act of tending a plot of land. Price skillfully balances the botanical, historical, and culinary backgrounds of the gardeners she profiles, and John Gregor's photographs are beautiful on their own. I think this book's stunning layouts and engaging stories make its appeal extend far beyond the world of Minnesota gardeners.
Book Description
In Your Child in the Balance, child psychiatrist, Kevin Kalikow examines the highly topical and thorny question of whether and when to prescribe psychiatric medication to children. As parents, are we too ready to run to our pediatrician for Ritalin when our child shows the first sign of inattention at school? Or do we instead shy away from our doctor's recommendation to consider an anti-depressant for a chronically sad and withdrawn teenager? Among the ever-growing outcry that psychiatric medicines are over-prescribed to children and adolescents today, how is a parent to know whether medication is the right treatment for their troubled child?
Dr. Kalikow tackles these questions with the sensitivity and insight of years of experience helping families through the thicket of research and opinion to find the right answer for their child. Through many colorful vignettes, he explores our efforts to protect our children from the inevitable hurts and disappointments of childhood, and the role that medication can play in that attempt. On the other side, Kalikow shows us our determination to have our children succeed or fail on their own, the way we had to do, even to the point of refusing the medication that might help them overcome a serious and potentially chronic disability.
Dr. Kalikow guides readers through the maze of possible treatment decisions--the many different families of psychiatric medication, alternative treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and perhaps the most difficult decision of no treatment at all. He closes the book by examining one family's difficult journey to the decision to medicate their acutely anxious daughter.
Your Child in the Balance: An Insider's Guide to the Psychiatric Medicine Dilemma is an important and timely book that will hit home to every parent who has seen their child in pain and asked themselves, "I wonder if medication might help."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for parents and professionals.......2007-05-19
This book delivers- well written + clear + suitable for those not in the mental health/medical fields yet does not oversimplify/dumb down. If you are wondering whether medicine may be needed for your child or client, or if you are concerned with the state of psychiatry + medicine today, this book is a must read.
KUDOS!.......2006-08-01
As a child psychiatrist who works with children, adults and families in much the same way as Dr. Kalikow, and as one who is all too familiar with the "thorny" kinds of issues which can block parents and or their cihldren from benefitting from the therapeutic process and to then go on and experience real healing, I am very grateful to him for this book.
"Your Child in the Balance" is a highly readable and easily digested source of information for parents who are faced with the daunting task of obtaining the best help for their children who struggle with emotional and behavioral problems. In an age where so many practioners in child psychiatry seem to have become almost single mindedly focused on the use of pharmacologic agents to treat, if not "cure", our children, using medicines which often do offer both the potential for relief for so many problems as well as risks, and with a media which often fails to provide an appropriate perspective on the complex issues involved in such forms of treatment, it has become increasingly difficult for parents to know who to turn to and who to trust when a child is troubled and in need of "professional help". Knowing when medicine is appropriate and when not, as well as what other therapeutic modalities a parent can expect from child psychiatrists and other "mental health" providers, are examples of the information one can expect to find in this book. He handles these and a host of other related issues in a clear, thoughtful and sensitive, yet straightfoward, manner.
Dr. Kalikow does an admirable job of presenting timely and relevant issues, filling some of what I consider to be a psychoeducational void with much needed light.
Richard A. Flamberg, M.D.
South Salem, New York
To Medicate or Not.......2006-05-22
Your Child in the Balance by Kevin Kalikow, a pediatric psychiatrist addresses the dilemma that parents face when deciding whether ir not to use medicine to treat their child's psychiatric disorder. Dr. Kalikow opens by searching for the answers to two questions. Where do we draw the line between function and dysfunction in defining pediatric mental illness? When and how do we decide to treat these illnesses with medications?
The book defines the most common disorders and describes the medications used to treat them. The text is well peppered with detailed case histories. Dr. Kalikow's voice, in this book as in his clinical practice, is clear, coherant and engaging. Most parents will find one or more vignettes which resonate with similarities to their child's behavior and struggles. We see children whose disorders are mild and others whose symptoms are extremely distressing to them and impact significantly and negatively on their families and classmates. In these latter cases, we are shown the impact of pharmacologic treatment.
Many of my pediatric patients have benefitted from Dr. Kalikow's psychiatric care which is remarkable for depth of understanding and respectful perserverance with even the most challenging patients. This book will serve as a guide to other families searching for the right paths for the treatment of their children.
Harriet J. Blumencranz, MD, Goldens Bridge, NY
A Sensitive and Intelligent Guide to a Difficult and Emotional Subject.......2006-05-12
Dealing with a child's illness in any form is always difficult and emotionally draining, but when it comes to less tangible psychological disorders, the acknowledgment of the condition and the subsequent choice of treatment for our children are among the most difficult of all medical issues a parent must deal with.
The shift from Freudian therapy to pharmacological treatment of children is new to many of us, and I was admittedly a skeptic and needed a lot of information and understanding. Dr. Kalikow's book was by far the best treatment of any such parenting issue I've ever read.
His style of writing - while suffused with an extraordinary amount of well-organized information - is engaging and gentle, and in my case, managed to address almost all of the questions I had on the subject.
By presenting scores of individual case vignettes, along with the arguments both for and against various types of treatments, their effects, potential side-effects, time scales, and long-term considerations, Dr. Kalikow's book provided me with a substantial tool with which to deal with problems "in my own back yard."
There's a lot of hand-holding in his narratives, and in some cases Dr. Kalikow's easy-going manner may seem like he's addressing an audience of adolescents. But when it comes to handling our children, perhaps we can all benefit from being treated in this way, with a touch on the shoulder and the reassurance that the understanding of these disorders in chldren is still new to everyone, and their treatments are even newer.
Bravo and thanks to Dr. Kalikow for providing a very useful and engaging body of information.
very helpful to parents.......2006-05-10
A thoughtful and helpful book for a complex subject. Dr. Kalikow addresses the decision making process of the parents, the child and the health care professional when choosing how to address the needs of their child. It is written clearly, with humor, compassion and tenderness. I believe parents will be able to make a more educated decision after reading this book.

My copy of Beth's book is full of underlines and earmarks! Her insights are timely and help us to focus our energeries where they will do the most good. Thanks for a great resource!
Who's Kid is this?.......2007-06-15
Beth's book saved my relationship with my youngest boy when I discovered that he is an intuitve, thinking type when it comes to temperament; one of the most challening types of children to raise. Beth taught me how to look at my child's actions from a different point of view so I wouldn't take certain behaviors personally and could deal with them more creatively--for both of our sakes. In fact, I consulted with her personally and she was an incredible help to my husband and me. I highly recommend this book to all parents who are truly interested in raising the child you were given instead of forcing a personality on him or her. Great book!
A must read for all parents and thoses who work with children!.......2007-05-28
I just finished this book and it was full of wonderful teachings to apply to
children. It equipped me with a new set of eyes for observing and guiding children into a balanced and healthy life. On-top of the abundance of information this book provided it was full of helpful references on specific topics which was very helpful as well. I would recommend this book to anyone that has children or works with them in anyway.
Excellent!!.......2007-05-27
What a wonderful book! It is a holistic, comprehensive, user-friendly tool for parents, teachers and health care practitioners. Beth is an intelligent and down to earth writer. She acknowledges children with the same respect as adults and reminds us that children are the bearers of light. If we provide the right environment for them, they will be illuminated throughout their lives.
Good Work!.......2000-07-11
Beth is such a wise writer! This book reflects a weath of tools to help us find a way to raise our children in a sane way. Truly comprehensive and loving and spritually uplifting.

Book Description
Can You Really Do It All?
A sensible, practical guide for every mother who wants to be home with and for her children.
--Arlene Rosen Cardozo, author of Sequencing and Women at Home
Staying Home Instead is a key resource for all parents who have wondered if one of them--usually the mother--can stay home and care for the children while maintaining both sanity and a decent family bank balance.
The author, a former beleaguered working mother, urges parents to attAnd to their personal needs and reasserts the value, excitement, and joy of caring for their children. This book will be invaluable for parents, particularly women, who feel pressured to continue working, but want to understand its effect on their children. The author encourages readers to explore alternatives that make good financial and personal sense. This revised edition also offers concrete information on writing a resume, running a home business, using flex-time professional work, and telecommuting.
Customer Reviews:
vadiates what i thought! .......2006-08-31
I found this book helpful, validating what i thought about motherhood and the importance of staying home with my little one. she's a great writer and gave very practical important tips.
Nothing useful.......2003-01-02
I got this book because I thought by the subtitle that it would have some useful information on what I have planned to do--stay at home with my child. Instead, this book spends its first 70 pages stating over and over why feminists are wrong, why the media is wrong, etc. It is repetitive and not very accurate. It also assumes the reader has not made up her mind about the benefits of staying at home with children and needs to be convinced.
The author finally gets into vague tips on saving money and working at home, but nothing unique. Instead she recommends reading books like Tightwad Gazette, or books on how to start a home business. If you really want to help your child, take the money you would have spent on this book and treat your child to some educational toys instead.
Old Fashioned!.......2002-01-22
This book was too old fashioned to be useful today. The ideas were unrealistic.

A Salty Read.......2000-05-26
SALT LANTERN: TRACES OF AN AMERICAN FAMILY is a salty journey with author, Bill Morgan, as he traces his life and records his family history. Beginning with his great-grandmother's salt-filled chimney lantern, Morgan captures his ancestral family history through his study of family homes, landforms, letters, and family artifacts.
Morgan travels back through time by visiting ancestral homes in England, Ireland, Scotland; then he moves to Vermont, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and North Dakota searching for buildings and landscapes, letters and historical documents that help him tell his story.
Satl Lantern is also about Morgan himself. As a child gowing up in Pipestone, Minnesota, with a single mother, surrounded by older siblings and cousins, (his father died before he was born), Morgan uses the environment he grew up in to find his own sense of place and purpose within his immediate family and his ancestral family.
Morgan adds fresh memories written by his brothers and sister, as well as journals and other family documents to create a comprehensive American famiy history.
For anyone interested in family history, architecture, or just a good read, this book is a pearl. Photos throughout help to tell Morgan's story. Esspecially interesting is the story and photo of the Salt Lantern House that inspired Morgan to pursue this project. Morgan tells us he now has the family heirloom in his possession.
Salt Lantern.......1999-11-30
Salt Lantern by William Towner Morgan is an in-debth study of a man and his relationship with the home he was born and raised in. The story he weaves includes his personal recollections, other family members' recollections, as well as a chronological history of the structures his ancestors lived in over the centuries.
Salt Lantern is also a personal history of the various branches of Morgan's families--in England, Ireland, early America, and into the Twentieth Century. It appears he was born after the sudden death of his father, he was raised in a household of women, and he grew up not really understanding his place in the family.
Morgan seems to become the Salt Lantern, an artifact that has signifigant meaning within the family, but is not really understood. Morgan explores his own birth, life, and relationships through the structures he studies and describes.
This is a study of history, architecture, family relationships, and personal memoir. A good read.

UNIQUE UNIQUE UNIQUE - The unmatchable style of Sam Yulish
The Hesitant Psychic is so wonderfully different that I found it very difficult to put down. I thought I had read every kind of paranormal story, but these are so incredibly new and well written that I laughed, I cried, and I shuddered, as the author took me on a marvelous roller coaster ride through the repository of my emotions.
The stories in The Hesitant Psychic make me want to think deeper about my life and the lives of those close to me. The stories are fresh and unique and stir up all of my emotions. The paranormal slant is positively original. Yulish has done it again with his second unique book!
------ Patricia Anne Dennison, author of STOP THE VOICES and THE SPELL OF SAINT CYRIL'S CEMETERY
Unique and fresh, just as his first book, WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE? which has sold world wide, and is now in a revised edition.

From the archives of FATE magazine, this colorful collection of true ghost stories rises out of the United States' rich tapestry of Southern history. While most of the stories focus on specters from the United States' bloodiest internal conflict, others paint pictures of spirits still wandering the earth two centuries after their deaths. The narrators will pull you into the heart of their tales, so leave the light on and be ready to shiver.
Book Description
PHANTOM ARMY OF THE CIVIL WAR
and other SOUTHERN GHOST STORIES
Compiled and Edited by Frank Spaeth from the files of FATE Magazine
For nearly fifty years, FATE Magazine has informed and entertained readers with stories of ghosts, UFOs, and other unexplained phenomena. This collection represents some of the best Southern ghost stories ever to appear in FATE, the world's oldest magazine featuring the true story of strange and unknown occurrences.
PHANTOM ARMY OF THE CIVIL WAR compiles thirty-five tales of first-hand encounters with specters and phantoms, of ghost-ridden swamps and the eerie mansions that populate the haunted South. The stories are alphabetically organized by the state in which they occurred, and cover a span of more than forty years.
The rich and emotional history of the American South certainly adds something unique to this collection -- many of the spirits alluded to fought and died during the Civil War, our bloodiest and most costly conflict; others lived long before then, assisting in America's fight for independence from the British. But not every story deals with wars or battles; there are tales of lost and betrayed love, and of ancestors looking to protect the living from beyond the grave.
Written by anyone from the average person to the professional paranormal investigator - each of whom has been haunted by the often terrifying spirits of men, women, children and even animals - this unique and varied collection will offer something different for everyone, whether you believe in ghosts or not.
Customer Reviews:
Heavy on the Ghosts, Light on the Civil War.......2005-10-18
All of the stories contained in this book come from the American South and the editor may have decided that this fact was a good excuse for the title he chose. Unfortunately, the title and the content do not match up in the least for there are practically no stories that deal with the Civil War in any shape or form. Obviously the title would indicate that this book contained either stories of ghostly encounters during the war or of hauntings caused by the war. If that is the kind of story that you are looking for then skip this book and look to Nancy Roberts or Christopher Coleman to satisfy your craving because you will get little more than an appetizer here.
On the other hand, this book is just full of fascinating reports of encounters with the sprit world. Frank Spaeth has acted as the editor for this project, which takes as it's source stories that have been printed over the years in "Fate" magazine. Many of the stories included were written by the very people who experienced the paranormal incidents and are therefore excellent first person accounts. People who have extensively interviewed eyewitnesses write most of the other stories and some have even gone to the trouble to research old newspapers to see if the haunting had made news in a bygone era. Of course a few old legends that have little or no basis in fact have made it into this book but thankfully these legends are few and far between.
Some of the stories related in the pages of this book are well-known haunts such as the ghostly windowpane in Carrollton, Alabama but for the most part these are haunts that receive very little publicity. It is a rarity for me to find a book of this kind that includes only two or three stories that I have read about before and this publication has accomplished just that.
There are however a few negatives aspects of this book that should be considered before making a decision to put it on your reading list. For starters, some of the stories are a little lacking in depth. This flaw I suppose is because few of the writers whose stories have been included are professional writers or ghost chasers. While reading several of the stories I just couldn't help but wonder what the above mentioned Roberts or Coleman could have done with the story in question. Still, the freshness of style and wide-eyed wonder evident in these amateur author's stories were probably worth the loss of depth. Another problem, at least for some readers, will be the ever-changing writing styles as a different author writes each story. Some of the stories are very well written while others tend to drag a bit but since most of the stories are short the ones that drag along don't last too long.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable book that is just filled with accounts of encounters with Southern ghosts. Even though there is only one story having to do with the Civil War and even though I really think that the title should be changed in any future editions, I found this to be a highly interesting and very readable book.
A fun read.......2004-01-03
I enjoy a good "true" ghost story, and Phantom Army of the Civil War is an excellent example of the genre. Composed of a selection of short stories first published in Fate Magazine, the book is very well written. While it isn't King or Straub, it isn't intended to be either. The tales hold the reader's attention to the end, and charm by virtue of they're being "real" experiences. Since the book is a collection of southern stories, the book is divided into Southern states, with two and more selections for each. Those coming from one of these states should find them especially fun to read. Some of the tales are legends, some approach folk tale status, and some are reported by those who purportedly experienced what they believed to be true paranormal events. Enjoyable.
FOR THOSE WRITING PAPERS FOR ENGLISH LIT OR ENGLISH COMP, SOCIOLOGY OR ANTHROPOLOGY:
You might consider how these tales blur the line between narrative and expository prose, ie.) fiction like that of King or Straub and serious study or research. You might compare these ghost stories with those of Hans Holzer, whose style is more like that of a scientist (in fact, I believe he is a physicist). You might critique the style of the stories: what makes one story seem like a true event, while another seems more like a folk tale. How might you write a fictional story that took on the character of a "true" narative, ie.) what are the components of "real events." You might consider what function such stories have had--even still may have--for the individuals that tell them or communities in which they are repeated.
this book is a lie.......2003-10-28
this book is yet another book that uses the name civil war to sell itself but doesn't have a darn thing about the civil war in it. I only found two of the stories interesting. most ghost books tell of famaouse hauntings this book tells of hauntings such that no one cares about. buy dixie ghost or another book becasue this book sucks
What a dissapointment!!.......2003-10-23
I really don't know what kind of evil spirit must have possessed me in order for me to purchase and read this book!! I guess I was hoping for some kind of usolved mystery of the Civil War (like a phantom army that fought a battle and dissapeared or something), but I was completely disappointed.
The cover of the book was designed for just the purpose it accomplished with me: to fool people into thinking that the book would talk about some kind of Civil War story. However,it delivers nothing of the kind. The story about the phantom army is all of five pages (short ones) and really doesn't have anyting to to with the Civil War. The rest of the book is comprised of poorly written and almost certainly fictitious stories of haunts in the South.
Trust me, this book isn't worth your time. There are much better ghost stories out there.
It's OK...........2002-10-11
Not exactly what I'd call "spine tingling horror." Has a few good stories, but there are better compilations out there.
