Nicely written, and interesting to read.......2002-02-16

This is a quick read that is both well-written and well-organized. The authors take few diversions - historical, rhetorical, or empirical - from describing the relations among the characters in the title: the credentialed Newton, the laborious Gray, and the intermediary Flamsteed. The result is a concise and enjoyable report on what is known and what can be reasonably surmised about the relative contributions of these men. There is sufficient detail (and sufficient lack of colouring) to make the book of interest to scientists, and to historians and sociologists of science. But there the book is sufficiently accessibile, and the subject matter sufficiently finite to make it equally appealing to anyone with interest in such topics as politics, organizations, and astronomy, not to mention Newton and his era.

The Clarks make no bones about it: Sir Issac Newton was one of the greatest scientific minds of the his time. Of all time, in fact. Newton was the symbol of the triumph of science over superstition.

But Newton had a darker side. Despite the fame and recognition he had received, Newton refused to let anyone threaten to overshadow him or stand in his way of greater achievements.

Reverend John Flamsteed was the first Astronomer Royal - a position he held for 44 years serving under 6 kings. He spent his night in the observatory of Greenwich gazing through telescopes, cataloguing the stars. Newton wanted this information to figure out a better way to navigate to oceans, a major problem in his day. He was convinced Flamsteed was holding back the critical information he needed. For that, Newton used all the considerable power at his disposal to end the career of Flamseed. He almost suceeded. It was only because of the dedication of Flamsteed's widow that his 3-volumn Historia Coelestis Britannica was published.

Today, because of Flamsteed's work, we measure longitude from the place he accomlished his work - Greenwich.

The work of Stephen Gray is less known. A commoner trained as a dyer, he was a most unlikely member of the Royal Society.

Gray was a long time friend of Flamsteed. He carried on a regular coorespondence with the elder scientist, sharing with him his own celestial observations.

But it was Gray's pioneering work in using electricity for communications that earned him immortality. Work, that if not for Newton, may have been accomplished 20 years sooner.

This is an excellent introduction to the world of divorce mediation presented by experienced and insightful practitioners. Their approach responds to those truly interested in a thoughtful, sane, and non-adversarial approach to a very difficult process.

This book introduces the reader to a mediation approach that shows respect for the true needs and interests of both participants. It challenges the combative and vengeful litigation model so often promoted by attorneys who convince their clients to seek every possible advantage regardless of the short and long-term impacts of such an approach. It also challenges models of divorce mediation that replicate the adversarial and coercive qualities of litigation by seeking to manipulate the parties into quick "voluntary" settlements.

The model presented by Friedman and Himmelstein seeks deeper understanding and the resolution of conflict only when both parties truly feel satisfied with the results, a difficult goal, but one that can reasonably be achieved with their approach.

The book begins with an excellent summary of the goals of mediation, how it differs from litigation, and the special role of the mediator. It then presents a dozen short case studies, based on actual mediations, to highlight different issues and conflicts that may arise in a divorce mediation, with helpful discussions about the dilemmas. Is mediation the best approach for the parties? What happens when the parties can't break out of their anger and resentment? Suppose one of the parties is far more assertive and articulate than the other? How can mediation promote a fair settlement instead of one that is imposed on the parties? Through these case studies, you are transported to a mediator's office and are able to listen in on the discussion between the parties and the mediator. You learn why the mediator chose are particular approach and how the parties were able to resolve their conflicts.

The authors are two of the most experienced and highly regarded mediators and educators in the field. Their experience and wisdom shines through every page. Learning about the basics of mediation from these professionals will enable you to walk into a mediation process informed and aware of the process and its potential. Awesome! Great resource! .......2005-10-15

I love this book! It has seen us through some really tough times. The weeks we are broke my husband thinks we are eatting better than normal. Everything I have tried has turned out great, the Chicken & dumplings, french dressing, pumpkin bread, no bake cookies, chicken salad and the list goes on. (My kids love the play-dough recipe). This book is sooo worth it's price. I would love to buy a couple copies for our local food bank.

I have wasted even more money because I've had to throw out so much that was just awful! I did fix a couple of things that we liked like the 90 minute rolls but most of it I had to throw out. I'm very disappointed. Not much, if any, flavor in any of the recipes I tried. I'm glad so many others have liked it but it just really wasn't for my family.

OH MY GOSH this is exactly the book I have been looking for.

I have loads of cook books from expensive recipes to amish style cooking and this one is my FAVORITE!!! Now when I do my bi-weekly meal planning I grab ONLY this book instead of a whole bunch of my other cook books. I was looking for something that was good old style cooking without all those ingrediants that I never have on my shelf because they are too expensive.

Super easy and delicious recipes.

I recommend this book out to EVERYONE I know.

My only problem is that my book is falling apart because I abuse the heck out of it.

Those reveiws that complain about too much fat, sugar etc can EASILY be adapted to fit there lifestyle.
I was surprised to see some of the reveiws in there about this not being low fat etc. It DOESN"T Claim to be.
Some people like my family need the fat in our diet or we would wither away to nothing. and our cholesteral is great.
I used Whole Wheat flour and honey in place of some of the ingredients in her recipes and have had great success. As well as you can cut down the fat also. Using lower fat cheeses, sourcream etc. So the only dissappointment that I have are the people that complain that they can't use it because its not vegan enough or low fat.
All I can say is adapt the recipes to your taste and lifestyle.

Tawra AWSOME job. Keep us posted on when #2 comes out because I want to be the first to know. :o)

I love this cookbook! Just plain, good food for people who want to keep things simple. You won't need high-priced extras to fix these recipes. Forget gourmet! And lots of frugal tips I haven't seen before. Glad I got this book!

Tawra has taken a lot of time to put down in her book frugal ways to cook, make silly putty and fruit leathers, etc. A must have book for a family on a budget but the recipes are great - so you don't need to be poor to enjoy this book.

Knowing your Dog, the whole story.......2000-04-18

A very comprehensive book; everything from dog behavior in the wild, to your pet's behavior, to how to take care and train your pet. I own 2 dogs and have obedience trained them and this book was correct on so many points that are so important to a successful pet/owner relationship. Wonderful photos and captions emphasize all the learning points. I especially liked the Dog Care section that showed basic health care for your dog. Overall a wonderful and broad range of topics that helped me understand my dogs even more.

I am short, full busted, round and no longer have a perky body. I bought the book because I make a lot of tee shirts and have problems fitting. Marcy does a thorough job of teaching us how to construct and alter our garments. Often the front of my shirt rides up because of my bust size. Marcy shares the tip of cutting across the front of the pattern at the bust point and adding an inch to accomodate the full bust. This extra space gets eased into the side seam at the bust point and my tee shirts no longer ride up in the front. She also gives detailed explanations and pictures on how to alter all parts of the pattern. This is now a book I refer to often when starting to work with a new pattern. Thank you, Marcy for sharing your sewing knowledge with us.

A very valuable sewing reference book.......2005-02-09

This is a very helpful handbook for home sewers who want to learn appropriate techniques for creating quality women's tops. There are many good illustrations, and the text is clearly written. As a skilled seamstress who has sewed for many years, I can tell you that the methods in this book are really good, and as the title indicates they are also quite easy. If you are learning to sew and have trouble understanding the guide sheets that come with commercial patterns, this books will teach you sound sewing techniques that will get you off to a good start.

Although much of the content of this book may already be familiar to advanced sewers, you may still learn something new or find things that you knew but had forgotten. I browse through this book frequently when planning a new sewing project. It is nice to have so much pertinent information in one handy little paperback.

If you are looking for a sewing book that deals with very fitted or tailored garments, this is not the book you want. It does not cover making collars, or the methods used in making menswear type shirts. The author's introduction specifies that she is only dealing with t-shirts made from knit fabrics, or with unstructured pullover tops in woven fabrics. The emphasis of the book is on fashion sewing. The examples in the book are dressy tops, rather than casual t-shirts or unisex activewear. The author shows how to take very basic designs and add value and quality by using designer methods. She also gives good advice about appropriate fabric choices.

Excellent -- very thorough and easy to understand........1998-11-14

You wouldn't think there would be enough to say about t-shirts to fill a whole book, would you? Well, there is! This is another terrific book from the people at Threads. If you want to make really beautiful, professional, classy tops and t-shirts this is the book for you. Marcy Tilton has taken her many years of sewing and teaching experience and distilled it into a guide that helps with fitting, tweaking the pattern, choosing fabrics, new ways with facings and neck bindings, etc. There's a good beginner section on painting and stencilling your tops too. I bought this book after hearing Marcy lecture at a sewing convention on the topic "The $200 T-Shirt" and have found it to be very useful in my sewing. There are some small tables on measurements and interfacings that are great for photocopying and putting on your bulletin board in your sewing room. I would highly recommend this book if you're looking for a way to spruce up that Casual Friday wardrobe.

Very Effective Program.......1999-07-13

Best program I've seen for behavior management at home. As a parent of daugthers (ages 13 & 11), this program proves to be very effective for most any age child. This book provides easy step-by-step instructions with examples for start behaviors, stop behaviors and rewards/privileges in just 22 pages. The book also comes with several pre-printed charts where you and your child can fill in the behaviors and privieges you choose. Great for ADHD children/families. We have used this program for 5 months now and it has worked wonderfully for us all. A very positive parenting tool.
