Book Description
Herbert Simon (1916-2001), in the course of a long and distinguished career in the social and behavioral sciences, made lasting contributions to many disciplines, including economics, psychology, computer science, and artificial intelligence. In 1978 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his research into the decision-making process within economic organizations. His well-known book The Sciences of the Artificial addresses the implications of the decision-making and problem-solving processes for the social sciences.
This book (the title is a variation on the title of Simon's autobiography, Models of My Life) is a collection of short essays, all original, by colleagues from many fields who felt Simon's influence and mourn his loss. Mixing reminiscence and analysis, the book represents "a small acknowledgment of a large debt."
Each of the more than forty contributors was asked to write about the one work by Simon that he or she had found most influential. The editors then grouped the essays into four sections: "Modeling Man," "Organizations and Administration," "Modeling Systems," and "Minds and Machines." The contributors include such prominent figures as Kenneth Arrow, William Baumol, William Cooper, Gerd Gigerenzer, Daniel Kahneman, David Klahr, Franco Modigliani, Paul Samuelson, and Vernon Smith. Although they consider topics as disparate as "Is Bounded Rationality Unboundedly Rational?" and "Personal Recollections from 15 Years of Monthly Meetings," each essay is a testament to the legacy of Herbert Simon -- to see the unity rather than the divergences among disciplines.

Book Description
At last, long-awaited answers to the questions you’ve been asking. Help for frustrated ADHD patients and their families. (As well as those with autism, PDD, Asperger’s syndrome, and other related conditions.)
Attention deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is one of the most rapidly growing diagnoses of our generation. Often the diagnosis fails to provide real help, leaving patients, doctors, and families at a loss to know what to do next. But for the first time ever, new insights into the overwhelming number of similarities between Autism and ADHD are giving those with ADHD genuine hope.
For years, the label of Autism has carried a negative connotation. Parents were afraid to admit the diagnosis and banished the term from discussion. Finally, The ADHD-Autism Connection gives parents, educators, and doctors a reason to embrace autism with a renewed sense of hope and understanding. This book will show how these understandings can minimize the frustration, misdiagnoses, and misunderstandings ADHD sufferers and their families face.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-03-29
As a parent of a son diagnosed with ASD and ADHD this book sounded very promising to me.
Unfortunatly I found it less than helpful. It is part personal story, part quotes from research and neither works well. Had it been a story of her personal experiences of raising three kids on the spectrum it might have been more interesting and less confusing. Had it presented true research instead of anecdotes and quotes from other books it could have been interesting. Instead the whole thing sounded like a mediocre term paper to me. The chapter on developmental stages throughout childhood stages would have been a wonderful idea but instead I got to read short descriptions of her sons. Since kids on the spectrum can vary widely this ment nothing to me and my experiences. The frequent mentions and quotes from her personal religious beliefs felt unproffessional and out of place.
There are many books on adhd and autism out by now and there was nothing in this book that was new or compelling or interesting as a personal account. It might be my first book on this topic that will get thrown out. For anyone looking: 'Kids in the syndrome mix' is a much better written and researched book on the topic of neurobiological disorders.
Great insight.......2006-11-04
I am the parent of an 11-year-old boy with Asperger's Syndrome, or high-functioning autism (diagnosed at 5). We have struggled mightily in recent years, despite reading virtually everything out there on Asperger's (God bless Tony Attwood!), and have been perplexed as to how to address the ADHD symptoms my son displays. I couldn't understand (nor could any doctors) why ADHD treatment failed him, and often seemed to backfire and produce an opposite of the desired result. I found this book very enlightening. I think that the possibility that ADHD and autism spectrum disorders are part of the same continuum is quite feasible. Nowhere does the book say that they are the SAME disorder. I have 3 nephews who are autistic (all brothers), and even thought they fall under the general category of "autism", they have some very differnt behaviors from one another. So to say that ADHD CANNOT be "related" to autism (as some reviewers have claimed) becuse some behaviors are different is fautly reasoning, in my opinion. The term "continuum" implies that there are a wide range of behaviors, different with each child based on their intensity and a child's personality. If I've learned anything about autism over the years, it's that you cannot put autistic children in a "box" in terms of their behaviors; this is one thing that makes the disorder so difficult to understand.
I especially liked the section of this book that covers medication. The author (becuase she is not a doctor) does not attempt to deal with this herself, but has a specialist address meds. After many trials of Ritalin-based meds and Strattera with my son, we always got a more hyper, frazzled child. The book suggested that perhaps because many children with autism have "amplified" senses (my words), a little medication will go a long way. We cut my son's medication down to a quarter of what we'd originally tried, and saw improvement right away. So I guess I tend to lend some credence to the author's ascertations. I'd been lost in the topsy-turvy world of Asperger's vs. ADHD (and whether my son had BOTH, or if they were related)for a very long time, and while this book does not lend any conclusive answers (and doesn't claim to), it certainly gets the debate going, and offers some preliminary proof that they may be realted. Autism is so little understood, that I welcome the kind of research done by Ms. Kennedy. She does not have a degree in neurology, nor psychology, but she is thouroughly well self-taught (as all parents of a child with autism need to be!). I feel that this book has helped to at least direct our path of treatment with my son, and for that I am grateful.
What?.......2005-05-18
As someone whose adult ADHD diagnosis changed and enriched my life, I feel called to write a reaction to this book. I truly feel I am part of the increasingly small number of people who HAD A TRUE and ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS. Also, at my employement, I work with a guy who is diagnosised autistic, and feel I know him fairly well.
In contrary to what I feel this book is saying, I have been incredibly baffeled as to what autisim is, or any understanding of it what so ever. I even told my parents, "I think autism is the opposite of whatever ADHD is." I don't think I have ever been as shocked to read something as when I came across this book. What comes to mind, is that ADHD is actually a rare disorder/blessing that many non-ADD (as well as autistic) children and adults are being falsly diagnosed as. ADHD has been as abused and misunderstood as much as the way most of our modern educational systems have been to the true ADDers themselves!
I am curious about more on this topic, and will be watching for it. On a personal level, however, all intution tells me that that ADHD, and especially ADD, are being twisted and contorted farther and farther away from its original discovery and meaning!
Beyond Excellent.......2005-04-09
I cannot give enough praise for this book. It is one of the best written books for ADHD/ Asperger's/ Autism and considering the amount out there that's saying a lot. It opened up a whole new world for me; a world that made sense where everything finally clicked into place after so long. This is not the book for the traditionalist, but if you dare to defy convention and "think outside the box" then this book is for you.
Great book. Very Enlightening.......2005-02-28
I found this book to be quite interesting. My son and I both own the titles of ADD, but I knew that was not the complete story. After accumulating my own personal library of practically every self-help book on AD-HD, and every other family and/or relationship issue, in a desperate attempt to find exactly why things got so crazy in our family, this book really changed my thinking.
It may not delve deeply into answers to issues, but this book brought to light a lot of characteristics describing my husband and many of his idiosyncrasies which previously I attributed to a shortcoming in myself which living with ADD has a tendency to do .
Trying to raise four kids, with a spouse who was either oblivious to his surroundings while pandemonium broke loose around him; or walked away when the noise level got to be too much; who couldn't communicate well with his children, never yelling, but talking "at", them, if at all; who is generally "compliant", but never once has sought out anyone else out for interaction; everything fell into place for me suddenly as I read this book.
Only someone with ADD, I think, could continue on with someone for years without receiving so much as a single token of affection, be it a candy bar or compliment, and still place the fault with themselves.
As a reviewer mentioned earlier, I too, after having purchased the book realized the occasional Bible quote, which always sends a warning flag to me. But I wouldn't let this be a reason to avoid the book. The focus is, as the title says, and stays on topic. Perhaps such references were meant catch the Christian eye for enlightenment. Autism doesn't' differentiate. And anyone dealing with these issues has the mutual bond of grasping at straws.
This book can't make life any less lonely, but if it might alleviate someone's self blame it is certainly worth reading. If necessary more in depth answers could be sought elsewhere, and there are certainly many references listed in the book for further information.

Customer Reviews:
There is only ONE true Margarita.......2007-01-13
This book is fine for those people who have no appreciation for either tequila, or the culture which spawned the one and only Margarita. If you cannot stomach the taste of a fine tequila mixed with a little lime juice and orange liqueur (triple sec, Cointreau, or whatever), then this book will help you make some bubblegum drinks. And to save some money, simply search for all these recipes at pretty much any tequila website. In short, avoid any book that claims any number of recipes for a Margaritas, a Martini, or a Gin & Tonic.

Customer Reviews:
Good ideas but incomplete recipes.......2006-09-08
This little book has beautiful pictures of a variety of interesting cocktails. However, a large number of them require ingredients that are not generally available. It is reasonable to expect a home bartender to have or make simple syrup. However, these cocktails include items like passion fruit syrup, melon syrup, strawberry syrup, ginger syrup, etc, and no recipes are provided.

Very informative and insightful........1999-04-16
This book does a wonderful job at covering the history of guide dogs. Obviously your interest in the subject must be piqued prior to picking up this volume as the reading of the history in the beginnig can be somewhat dry. The remaining portion details the author's story as she enters the arena of guide dog training after already having been an experienced dog trainer, only to learn that obedience training and teaching a dog to think and work out problems on its own institute diametrically opposed methodoligies. Margaret Gibbs writes this work from an insiders point of veiw. The school not only accepts her presents but purposes to give her every opportunity to experience the training and learning evironment to its fullest, which affords her an ability to share this heretofore hidden world of seeing eye dogs like I have not seen in any other work. This book should probably have a 5 star rating as it is in a class of its own. The writing is superb and the story is brought together with a good deal of finesse. This is the premier book to read for anyone with an interest in the mobility of blind persons.
Book Description
The difference between a good toy and a great one is the ability to entertain and instruct a child at the same time. The author, a woodworker with a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instructional Materials, combines his skills to show parents which toys are most effective for early childhood education, and then he gives them all the information they need to build those toys themselves. Nine fun projects from Pattern Blocks and Dominos to a Puzzle Train will get little ones learning without them even realizing it! Over 200 color photos and drawings are included.
Customer Reviews:
Great Instructional Book.......2007-07-03
This Book is a great guide to making children's toys. The toys are simple and elegant. Great illustrations and directions.
Quality and Fun.......2007-04-05
Neufeld presents a set of children's toys of extremely high quality that are fun to build. And, my grandkids play with them for hours. I believe the book describes how to make heirlooms. I highly recommend this for any woodworker.
Well Thought Out Projects.......2006-12-11
An excellent book with projects that are above the elementary level. Toys that provide continual challenge as the child develops. I have built the block set, a long-time favorite of my grandchildren despite their many "modern" electronic toys, and the train.
Caution: Be sure to double-check the dimensional drawings. There are several errors in the train drawings.
Great Projects-Not for the beginner.......2006-07-04
This is a great book- Great projects, clear instructions. I really like the learning through play secion which explains why these are great learning toys and the growth opportunity they present.
I think what would have really made this book is a section on tools. Showing the different tool, explaining their individual uses what sets them apart....for example how a table saw is diffferent from a band saw etc. Which is the most versatile saw for a beginner getting into toy making
If you are a woodworking beginner I recommend you begin with The Kids' Building Workshop : 15 Woodworking Projects for Kids and Parents to Build Together
by Craig Robertson, Barbara Robertson
Great Book!.......2005-11-26
This is just the book I was hoping to find. The projects are fun to make and fun to play with. I was especially hoping to find plans for some unit building blocks for my grandkids for Christmas, and I just finished making the set from this book. I couldn't keep my wife away from them; she kept playing with them before they were finished! The plans are very detailed and easy to understand. The equipment needed is usually pretty basic, and there's a list of all the tools needed for each project. I'm anxious to get to work on some more of the toys. I don't hesitate to fully recommend this book.

Colonial Williamsburg's renowned gardens have always played a major role in the life of the town. Their beauty and bounty inspired From a Colonial Garden. The author harvests a wealth of clearly written and illustrated entertaining and decorating how-to's and recipes from these famous gardens. From a Colonial Garden, with its myriad of ideas, deserves a special place on the bookshelf of any host, hostess, or gardener
Customer Reviews:
Rates a place on the bookshelf.......2004-03-27
Colonial Williamsburg... sets a high standard for illustrated books on gardens, the Colonial kitchen, and the decorative arts in the occasional books it publishes.
The latest from CW's presses is Susan Hight Rountree's "From a Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" ($24.95). The first section introduces the reader to the formal but colorful gardens visitors can admire in the restored area -- but these gardens also serve a practical purpose as succeeding sections attest...
The book is strong on weddings, offering a winter reception at the Williamsburg Inn or a summer ceremony at a James River plantation. Ms. Rountree... also uses garden materials to make gifts, wreaths, table decorations, and other items throughout the year. The section on Christmas is especially useful, and readers will want to remember to consult the book in early November, before the holidays, for fresh ideas.
This not primarily a cookbook, but Ms. Rountree includes recipes for seasonal dishes to round out her sections... As with all CW publications, this new book upholds the benchmarks of taste and style readers have learned to expect, and will rate a place on the bookshelf of gardener, cook, and home decorator.

Entertaining with a 'Colonial' Flair.......2004-03-15
The newest entertaining and decorating book from Colonial Williamsburg combines touches of elegance with moments of fun and fantasy.
The 212-page book, "From A Colonial Garden: Ideas, Decorations, Recipes" is divided into chapters that take you through the seasons and many special occasions such as weddings, bridal showers and rehearsal dinners. There are 287 color photos and 24 illustrations to guide you every step of the way.
Best of all, most of the projects are simple to create... For example, veggies such as colorful peppers are used to create a zesty-looking centerpiece on the nail-studded wooden cone that's typically covered with apples and sprigs of boxwood...
One of her easiest and sunniest table arrangements is perfect for a summer picnic or cookout. A partially hollowed-out watermelon serves as a container for a bouquet of zinnias, rudbeckia, coreopsis, apple mint and rosemary...
Rountree says the chapters on ideas from the spring garden are her favorite sections because they encourage you to use so many fresh flowers. "I'd like to see more people doing that," she says. "Fresh flowers are so many places these days--in the markets or you can grow your own."
A chapter on garnishes from the spring garden also features Rountree's garden pet--the Cheshire Cheese Hedgehog... English folklore says it's a sign of good luck when you find a hedgehog in your garden. The book features an easy cheese-based recipe for making the hedgehog. "I've had such fun with him, he'll be in every book," she says.
--Kathy Van Mullekom, Daily Press
Newport News, VA
Welcome to Spring.......2004-03-04
How charmingly and seamlessly does Susan Hight Rountree translate 18th-century entertaining style into the 21st century! This delightful addition to her past best-sellers will be enjoyed by not only professional designers but talent-challenged amateurs like myself who need guidance as we try to duplicate the classic Williamsburg look. The "how-to" directions are clear and the beautiful illustrations are lavish, promising success with all the enticing projects--family celebrations, garden parties, weddings, gifts and holiday decorations. A wonderful complement to every decorating library!

Customer Reviews:
Easy Information.......2005-10-06
This book has 'reader friendly' information. This book is a useful tool for people watching thier glycemic levels.
Book Description
The slow digestion and gradual change in blood sugar levels after eating food with a low glycemic index has health benefits for many people. The glycemic index of hundreds of different foods, which have been tested following a standardized method, is now known. This book makes it easy to enjoy slowly digested carbohydrates every day for better blood sugar control, weight loss, a healthy heart, and peak athletic performance.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth 5 bucks.......2003-08-24
It's good, but it only gives the rating for 100 foods. I did like the book, but not worth the price.
Easy, handy & helpful.......2003-03-27
I have bought books on the glycemic index. This book is a handy, quick guide to make it simple. Eating a diet geared toward low glycemic foods is easy to do. It's just changing a few choices. I got interested in the low glycemic index to help my husband with diabetes, and I lost 5 pounds. It's a healthier way of eating. Very refined foods have a high glycemic index. It also isn't generally good for you. Try that stoneground whole wheat bread. I'd also recommend "The Glucose Revolution: The Authoritative Guide to The Glycemic Index."
The Glucose Revolution, pocket guide.......2002-12-05
My husband has hypoglycemia. He has to be on a low blood sugar diet. I was happy to see this book, but was soon disappointed. The book tells you to eat foods like rice, potatoes, breads, pastas, raisins, corn and many more items that raises your blood sugar level. Although it does have some good points, this pocket food guide is not for a hypoglycemic. A good book that is worth looking into is Sugar Busters.
Best of the GI Books.......2000-03-09
I have been researching the Glycemic Index concept for several months. The data is fascinating, but often conflicting. This small resource provides powerful guidelines for adhering to a low GI diet. Unlike other resources, this book addresses portion size and eating low and high GI foods to produce a moderate GI meal. This book is a must for anyone interested in low GI eating.

Book Description
"Punin was an extraordinary figure, both as a man and as a thinker. . . . His relations with such schools as Constructivism, Acmeism, and Formalism make him a key figure in understanding the fate of theory in Russia." --J. Michael Holquist, Yale University, editor of the works of M. M. Bakhtin Nikolay Punin (1888-1953) was the most articulate Russian/Soviet art critic of the 1920s. He strongly advocated Constructivism, an avant-garde impulse that favored mechanomorphic abstraction and proclaimed a movement to bring art into the center of popular life. In the United States, he is perhaps best remembered for his love affair with Anna Akhmatova, one of the great poets of the twentieth century. This volume presents the first English translation of ten diary notebooks that Punin wrote between 1915 and 1936, as well as selections from his earlier (1904-1910) and later (1941-1946) diaries and some thirty notes and letters relating to his affair with Anna Akhmatova. These materials offer a rare glimpse into the life of art and artists in Russia. They also present vivid scenes from the 1905 Revolution, World War I, the 1917 Revolutions, World War II, and Stalinist oppression through the reflections of a talented man, who, unlike many of his generation, lived to tell the tale.
Customer Reviews:
A Riveting Piece.......2001-08-18
This inciteful look into the life of Punin is quite a page turner. From references to his affair with Akhmatova to reflections on the politics of the time, the diaries provide a rare chronicle of the early Soviet era. The tactful translation is smooth and easy to comprehend. Jennifer Greene Krupala is a very talented translator and does great justice to the diaries of Nikolay Punin; it is obvious that she has a deep understanding of the work and a strong command of the Russian language.

Book Description
This is a complete catalogue, in Japanese with a parallel Japanese/English introduction, of early books acquired by the diplomats W. G. Aston, Ernest Satow, and Heinrich von Siebold in Japan, mostly in the 1860s and 1870s. Of the 2,500 items, some are manuscripts and some movable-type books from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the bulk, however, are wood-block printed books of the Edo period (1600–1868). Many items are rare or unique and are being described in print for the first time. The editors’ introduction outlines the history of the collection, identifying some of the more important items and explaining the bibliographical principles on which the catalogue has been compiled. The entries that follow give title, author/editor/illustrator, date of publication and/or printing, all participating publishers, and the seals of previous owners.
