The first Japanese army unit was established in 1896. The Japanese railway engineers was a unique branch of the army which specialized in the operation and construction of railways and the employees of the Japanese National Railways conscripted into the army. This book tells the stories of the railway soldiers and JNR men during their training, their working experience in Burma, their engagements with the allied armies and their life after the surrender through the memoirs and testaments of those soldiers.

During World War II, Japanese railway soldiers constructed the 415-kilometer (258 miles) Burma-Thailand railway, very ardous task deep in rugged mountains heavily infected by cholera and tropical diseases. Building the urgently-needed railway within fifteen months was a great engineering achievement, but one accomplished at the cost of unfortunate death of 12,656 prisoners of war, including 133 Americans, and 8600 local workers. Both Japanese soldiers and the prisoners of war worked in a punishing enviroment, facing almost continious rain, shortage of supplies and food. The Japanese officers and the Korean guards of the prisoners camps were under the intense psycological strains, caught between strict military orders and demands of humanity.
After Japan surrendered in August 1945, two railway officers and 43 men from the prisoners camps were hanged, through military crimes courts. A prisoners camp commander wrote in his will (abstrated)
'Under these most adverse conditions, I proceeded to perform my duty with selfless devotion to my country, as well as doing my best to improve and rationalise the situation in the camp. It was not in my power to prevent many precious lives being lost during the construction work because of such adverse conditions.
However Heaven did not favor us and we were defeated, and I am now to fade away'
This book tells, vividly and for the first time in English, the personal accounts of these railwaymen throughout the war.
Misconception on the Burma-Thailand Railway A Reader.......2006-05-06
The book is a wonderful addition to the English-speaking literature on the World War II which gives a fine impression of the young men of the Japanese Railway Regiment and their attitude to the life. It will help Westners to understand the Japanese better, and make better connections between the Japanese today and the Japanese then - however much we have all changed, there are a lot of misconceptions we can still have about each other, and this is sad. It is not suprizing that some of the Prisoners of War were able to get on well with the Japanese railwaymen, and and it is a pity that this is not better known, but such episodes will be known by the book.

The detailed account of the design and transatlantic flight of the dirigible R-100 is the most fascinating part of this book. The description of the pre-computer work of a large roomfull of engineers calculating and recalculating the stresses (iterative calculation) on the framework of the airship is amazing.
Observations of Shute Norway.......2001-05-12
I read all of Nevil Shute's books, except this autobiography, at a much earlier time. I've periodically searched for this book for the last twenty years, and now I'm so glad to have read it. It helps to explain why I enjoyed the man's novels so much.
I was aware that Mr. Shute worked in aeronautical engineering, but had no idea he played such an important role in the industry. I had pictured his early engineering work much like his character in "No Highway in the Sky", a task oriented almost 'nerd-like' man with no interest beyond the laboratory. In an age when people seem to do all possible to elevate their public persona it is refreshing to look at a man who possessed humility.
I realize now how Mr. Shute could develop such wonderful characters in his novels, people with a full range of foibles but also the quiet courage that perserveres through struggles. He had his own life and his own dignity to build upon.

This book was an outstanding value for the small amount of money I paid. I never knew Pilates was developed by a man because so very few men ever attend our local YMCA class...anyhows the book is great for someone who wants alot of great info without having to read too much in order to get it...I would recomend this book as well as any other written by the late Joseph Pilates...he was a man well ahead of his time in the pioneering of preventive health!

This book and "Return to Life through Contrology" written by Joseph Pilates are the ultimate sources for understanding the philosophy and motivation behind the Pilates method. I think they are a must for people who love and practice Pilates. Not an easy read, but you don't have to understand every expression and word to get the meaning of them. What really comes through from these books is how passionate Joseph Pilates was about his methods and teachings. You will also find that not only he had an extensive and vast knowledge of human biomechanics but also he widely understood physics, biology and was able to make the connections that we just now are coming to understand. He truly was a pioneer and ages (not just years!) ahead of his time. On top of all that he was a brilliant inventor.

I think that the book gives you some insight as to what kind of a person Joseph Pilates was, and where so many of his exercises stem from.. thinking of that era, and what was available at the time. It's always good to look back to see where we have come from and how we have progressed and changed. It may be a book that I would refer back to, but does not make for "light" reading.

I have been studying the Pilates Method for about 3 years now. This book along with "Return to Life Through Contrology" has enabled me to more fully understand the Pilates method of exercise. It is not just exercise - it is a way of life. If you are a beginner it would be wise to choose one of the newer books to help you get started but, I would also purchase this book and Return to Life Through Contrology so that you can more fully understand the principals behind the method. I refer to my copies often for information and instruction. These are small, paperback, black and white books...but, they pack a great deal of information into their little package!

Sure this book is basic but it is fabulous for those of us who are not the best decorators....bakers....etc. There are many books out there that I am afraid to attempt the ideas but this one is GREAT!! Thanks Betty Crocker. I am so excited to make so many of the cakes and cupcakes in this book.

The cover of this book excited me, but when I received it, the decorations and ideas were very basic and child-like. It was disappointing as the cover gave an indication of exactly what I was looking for, but the insides failed to ignite! Good recipes for frosting etc, but unfortunately not as good as it looked!

Based on the adorable cover, I was anxious to add this book to my collection, however, I was a little disappointed once it got here. If you're going for something cute to take to your child's classroom party, or easy decorating for young children, then this book is for you. To be honest, this is just a glorified version of the Betty Crocker mini-magazines you find at a grocery store check out (as a matter of fact, I own one of those, and there are repeats in this book). If you are thinking of purchasing this book, I recommend you flip through it at a local book store first to make sure it is the level you are looking for.

A Superb Introduction.......2000-07-24
Jean-Pierre Sylvestre has taken great care in writing this book. Every known species of dolphin and propoise is covered, and he includes a wealth of facts about each species. Take care, this isn't a whale watching book, the only whales covered are the killer whale, false killer whale, pygmy killer whale and long and short finned pilot whales.
I was particularly impressed with some of the rare photographs of river dolphins such as the amazon river dolphin, ganges river dolphin and Chinese river dolphins that I have not seen in other books. Of course, he also has spectacular photos of the more common species. The ones without photographs were the Franciscana, Hourglass dolphin, Fraser's dolphin, Chilean dolphin, Burmeister's propoise, Vaquita and Spectacled porpoise all others included at least one photograph.
Included with the description of each species is a world map of their ranges, a pencil sketch of each species (especially useful if there is no photograph), when they were first identified, diet, population, other common names, reproduction information, a sketch of their skulls and interestingly enough sound emission information (frequency range and where the research was done etc...). This is only part of the information included, he's got all the common information about size and field identification too of course.
What I like about the book is that it can easily be used as a browsing book for people with a casual interest if they want to ID a dolphin they've seen, or somone looking for a little more detail.
There is also and excellent introduction to the book which includes general information about all species, the taxonomy, sound production and hearing, fossil record information and much more.
You can't really go wrong with the book. If you like this book, I also suggest Eyewitness Handbooks "Whales Dolphins and Porpoises" by Mark Carwardine which is just as good and covers all of the dolphins and porpoises plus all the whales. That text is a little less technical without the skulls or sound frequency information and is geared more towards whale watchers.

I have 5 daughters and they were all given American Girl dolls as gifts over the years, so for Christmas we bought this set. I originally thought this was just a book on doll hair styles when I bought it for them, and found the price here 25% less than at the actual American Girl site. I was really thrilled when I realized it was an entire set complete with book, DVD, special hairbrush (that won't damage doll hair), and lots of clips, elastics, hair ties, etc. for the dolls' hair. Not only have my girls been doing their dolls' hair up, they have also taken what they've learned and used the techniques on each others' hair. Very good accompaniment to American Girl dolls, I think.

The conservative agenda gets in the way!.......2001-06-04
I purchased this book after enjoying an exhibit of Hudson River School paintings. While the premise of the book is an interesting one, I couldn't get past the conservative politics! It was Newt Gingrich's quote & the mention of Lynne Cheney as a harbinger of moral change that pushed me over the edge. I was hoping to gain a further appreciation of the genre, but found myself too iritated by the modern day political commentary to keep reading. If you have BOTH an appreciation of the school & a conservative political outlook--this is probably the book for you. However, if you find conservative definitions of morality and cultural standards off-putting, don't bother with this one!
Inspirational.......2001-05-25
Anyone alarmed by the loss of cultural standards in America today will find this book fascinating. Mr. Cooper clearly demonstrates the relationship between culture and art. We are reminded of a time in our nations youth when the arts served to lift up and inspire, when truth, virtue and beauty were not doubted but sought after because they represented the very best of what we could be. Today much of our art points in the opposite direction, not celebrating what we aspire to be but pointing out the worst of what we are. As an artist in todays culture I can attest to the accuracy of Mr.Coopers observations concerning the role modern art has played in our cultural decline.I can also confirm the great hunger for art that lifts the spirit and inspires our hopes and dreams. I highly recommend this book for its insight into the importance of our creative endeavors and how we direct them. I hope it serves as an inspiration to all artists seeking to better the world through their gifts.
It's a different Cooper!.......2001-03-31
"Knights of the Brush" is a fascinating book on the Hudson River School landscape painters, but it is not (repeat not) by the novelist James Fenimore Cooper! The author, a distinguished art historian, is James F. Cooper and unlike the novelist is very much alive! That said, I find the book a little strange. Mr. Cooper analyses and discusses a wide range of Hudson River landscape paintings by painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, and Jasper Cropsey -- stressing their moral and religious intent and content in a way that should increase appreciation of their merit. The book is filled with attractive color reproductions of their works. But this is coupled with a sometimes repetitious jeremiad against current "post-modern" culture and ethics and apparently everything else to do with contemporary American culture. Somehow the art history and appreciation and the political pamphlet do not live happily with each other. Readers and art lovers can enjoy and appreciate "Knights of the Brush," and the author's passion for art, without necessarily accepting all his passion for turning back the cultural clock.

This is a book that post-modernists and deconstructionists can easily pass over. However, if you accept even a glimmer of Keats' insight:
Beauty is truth, truth beauty - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Then you will find this a worthwhile book. Cooper begins with the argument that the aesthetic is the most highly developed aspect of a society. Once the aesthetic sense begins to fray, then society is on a slippery slope where the moral vision begins to lose focus and eventually, may collapse.
This is a classic story of decline and fall, and Cooper puts the Golden Age with the Hudson River School of American art. The book takes the moral values of the early 19th Century Americans, natives like Cropsey as well as immigrants like Thomas Cole, and illustrates their beliefs with representative, breathtaking paintings. Some of the strongest points are made in contrasting the moral vision which informs the Hudson River School with the altogether bleak view of the human condition which is seen in representative works from 20th century painters like Hopper and Andrew Wyeth.
Cooper does effectively demolish the canard that these artists were little more than shills for the new capitalist order. Given the view which these men held, that to truely view nature is the glimpse the hand of God on earth, if they had painted mills and factories, they would have clearly been less than worshipful of their subject.
However, Cooper's thesis becomes a little repetitive as each chapter keeps coming back to the same theme with slightly different wording.
In the end, the art is stunning, the commentary is thoughtful, but slightly tighter writing style would have won a fifth star.

The Hudson River School of Artists included some of the World's greatest artists and their work can be found in this excellently produced book. This book is well written, well organized and shows off the treasures of the Hudson River Artists.
It is perfect for your library, coffee table, and excellent as a gift to art students, history students, loved ones.
Outstanding quality went in to this book.

I often give this book as a momento to people leaving their Hudson Valley homes. It has lovely pictures and an interesting text describing the history and importance of the Hudson River School of painting. In comparison to the Minks book- they are very similar except in cost.
