Short, but interesting.......2006-05-24
States Rights Gist is somewhat of a sidenote in Civil War history. As the previous reviewer stated, he is probably most remembered for his name above all else. However, upon reading this book, he could be remembered for a lot more. Gist actually led a very interesting career during the war and his marriage not too long before his death certainly adds some drama to the mix. Cisco's book does the General justice, but often times I felt like there could have been more. Gist was at the Battle of Secessionville, the largest battle fought in South Carolina during the war, but not much details come from the chapter. The Atlanta Campaign is glossed over. Even the battle of Franklin feels anti-climactic. Considering that Gist was one of the highest ranking men in the South Carolina militia, served in many of the wars major battles of the Western Theater, and was considered to have one of the best brigades in the Army of Tennessee you would expect more length and depth in the book. Cisco writes a decent book, but it reads too much like a college term paper when, it seems from Gist's life, it could have been so much more. Still recommended, though, because of such little scholarship on Gist.
Interesting little book about a general with a strange name.......2004-05-11
If not for his name (yes that was his real name), I rather doubt that States Rights Gist would be remembered today. He was one of the fatalities at the Battle of Franklin, which had more than its fair share of Confederate general officers killed or wounded. It ended a brief military career which had been moderately distinguished if not outstanding.
Why only 3 stars? Simply put, the subject matter is obscure, even for the most devoted Civil War enthusiast, and I cannot really imagine how the man's rather short life merited a book. I only came across the book because it was a History Book Club selection. It is so specialized that only a select few would ever seek it out. The fact that no other reviews have been written on it bears this out. It isn't a bad book, just maybe an unnecessary one.

Beyond Chaos is one of the best books for men who have a wife who lives with a chronic illness. A few years after recommending this book to many people I mentioned it to someone who is "a good friend" of the author, Gregg Piburn. She shared with me just how much heart went into this book.
This book is not from the perspective of a "know it all" and "follow my directions." It's written by a humble man who daily feels inadequate for this journey he has been called on to care for his ill wife. His deep love and constant support is obvious, but he still struggles with the feeling that he's put his foot in his mouth one more time.
I think his vulnerability is what makes this book a gem and one that men can actually relate to and find comfort and encouragement in. More books like this need to exist, but time will never make this one any less worthwhile. 10 stars!
Egocentric.......2005-10-29
First of all, I highly commend Mr. Piburn for having the courage to write his story. Although, the further I got into the book, the more egocentric his style of writing became. I felt like many times he was focusing more on how to say things than sharing what was really going on. When I arrived at the part in the book where he expresses that a man has to ejaculate sometimes, I could no longer read this. It sounded chauvinistic to me. As a female partner of someone with chronic pain, I can only say that I'm sure both sexes have a need to experience the release of orgasm. Maybe the book would be more helpful to a male who is the well spouse.
Honestly written!.......2005-10-14
This is one of the best books on how people cope with Fibro that I have read. This man is honest about how he feels and how he struggles in his role as caretaker of an ill spouse. It helped give me insight into what my husband must go through in helping to keep me sane and well as this illness steals both our lives.

As the husband of a person with chronic illness, I thought I might find some great insight and perspective that might lead me to a different path of thought or feeling. Didn't happen here.
While I agree that to a large part his attitude is great (almost saintly if you ask me) what I really didn't see in this was someone who really, really was real. While it definitely comes from a unique experience for material in this area, it still leans more toward the standard stuff on the subject.
IMHO, if this is the worst reaction(s) he ever had, then I want what he is taking.
Its a good book, if you have a life more Cleaver then Simpson. Unfortunately, most of us live in another world. Thanks Gregg, for writing the book. Guess I'll have to write one myself...

This book is great. The recipes are easy to follow and they don't require too many ingredients.
I made several dishes from this book for a recent "Girls night out" and by the end of the night everyone was asking for the title of the book to purchase it. I'm a novice at cooking, so these dishes really made me look good.

Jan has taken her passion and love of Batiks and quilting and passed that feeling on to those who open the pages of her book. Focus on Batiks gives the reader an excellent introduction to the unique properties of Batik fabric along with beautiful quilts that have been created with these fabrics. This would be a wonderful addition to any quilter's library.

Jan Smiley's book is top notch. She has numerous examples of batiks used well, projects to get the beginner and more experienced quilter going, and a gallery of excellent quilts, both traditional and innovative.
She has even included instructions for making your own batiks. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book, as good as going to a quilt show in your own living room.

This book is rich with many picts of Dendrobium species, and followed by short information on each of the species, appearance of flowers, growth habit and distribution. I always use this book with Dendrobium and Its Relatives by P. S. Lavarack to identify some orchids from eastern part of Indonesia(mostly Dendrobium family)

This 584-page book deals with some 269 species covering 55 genera. These are fully described with accompanying line drawings and over 130 of them are illustrated in colour.
The introductory chapters deal with the geography, climate and vegetation of Papua New Guinea as well as the conservation and classification of New Guinean orchids. This book, a massive undertaking in itself, is a bold start in making known to the orchid world the unusual and spectacular orchid flora of Papua New Guinea.
The island of New Guinea boast more than ten percent of all known orchid species. Although the author limited himself to species found only in the lowlands this book is a most valueable addition.

Realistic, Real-Life & Researched!.......2002-04-07
For anyone who has a daughter, niece, sister. For mothers who were once-upon-a-time daughters. For fathers, uncles and friends. This is required reading and requested sharing. It is a realistic definition of "empowering" -- but more, of "inspiring" -- girls to find/use their voices and goals within a society that still has a "pink and blue" mentality. The base -- an organization, Girls Incorporated, that has inspired millions of girls for more than 80 years to discover, stretch, and own their possibilities. The content is not anti-male but is full of realistic (and research-based) ideas to help young girls (based on Girls Inc. experience with girls nationwide) reach their full potential. Everyday tips and experiences; teachable moments; eye- and mind-opening opportunties. No lectures; no heavy research -- just a solid dose of reality. Valuable for grown-up girls, too! Helpful Ideas for Parents of Girls!.......2001-07-11
This book reminded me of the thoughts I had when our younger daughter was born. How could my wife and I help her to have an open door to pursue the opportunities that meant the most to her? I wish this book had been available to us then!

The foreword by Ms. Jane Fonda particularly moved me. She describes how she went from being a person with strong ambitions to a teenager who was timid and concerned about how others would see her. For many years, her "inner voice" was lost, and she finds herself only recapturing it in her sixties.
The model of this book is to have girls know their rights as people and to be advocates of those rights for herself and others. Girls Inc. was founded in 1945 and has done good work in helping establish equal opportunity by gender.
The organization has established a bill of rights for girls that includes the right to:
-- "be themselves and to resist gender stereotypes"
-- "express themselves with originality and enthusiasm"
-- "take roles, to strive freely, and to take pride in success"
-- "accept and appreciate their bodies"
-- "have confidence in their selves and to be safe in the world"
-- "prepare for interesting work and economic independence."
Many people would agree that these are worthy goals. What I liked was that the book reported about research that Girls Inc. has conducted to find out how parents can help.
As you may have guessed, girls look to their Moms to lead the way. In a recent survey, 99 percent replied that Mom was their heroine and guide to planning their own lives. By describing her own life choices at the same age, Mom can help make these transitions more understandable and positive.
Further, Mom and Dad can work together to emphasize filling in experiences and knowledge that girls might not otherwise get. Why shouldn't girls find out how cars work? Sons will often benefit from the same instruction. I know I would have.
Unlike many books and research on gender issues, this book does not try to make males out as the villain of the problem. Instead, the book emphasizes how girls can become more knowledgeable, confident, and able to take care of themselves. I was especially impressed with the section called "My Future."
After you read and discuss this book, I suggest that you think back to where you lacked support (whether you were a girl or a boy) as a youngster. Will your children have the same issues? If so, how can you help them have better choices and capabilities? What other issues will your children have that you did not? How can you help with those?
Give your children the benefit of thinking through their lives carefully and knowledgeably . . . with as few limits as possible!
So different from what's out there now!.......2001-03-13
While many books now box girls into gender sterotypes,this book shows girls how to reinforce their confidence so they can overcome societal pressure to conform to the myths about girls and their abilities.You do not here the usuall "girls can't do math" or "girls are less aggressive" those being the sterotypes to overcome..what you read are insightful tools to reinforce confidence and individuality.

This was an amazing book written in a very unique way. My favorite part about how the book was written is how he focused on the positives on what got him through this terrible experience, but still getting the point across of how horrific this event was in American history. All of you history buffs and novices alike out there NEED to read this book. Keep up the good work Mr. Bilek, great job!
No Uncle Sam.......2003-11-18
An amazing story told by a POW who lived the horror and survived to tell us his experiences. We must not forget what these men of war endured, how they coped and what kept them going. The detail and the clarity of this book puts the reader right there beside Bilek through 3 plus years of hell. You won't go away unaffected.
excellent WWII book.......2003-11-13
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. Bilek tells the untold story of thousands who endured horrible treatment, starvation, and enslavement in Japanese prison camps during WWII along with him. This is a real story about real people, and should be read by every American who enjoys the daily freedoms and simple pleasures we have here in the USA.
A very riviting read.......2003-10-30
This book is a real page turner to the point that you want to keep reading the book until it is finished. It is hard to imagine the horrific conditions the pows were put through by the Japanese. Mr.Bileks story transforms you back to 1942 like it was yesterday and the war was underway. I can't believe that one person could survive the illness and the tourture that Mr. Bilek was put through. The story is amazing in a sense that everything was just fine and then in a flash everything was gone from water to freedom. I could not put this book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
I was very impressed with Mr.Bileks memory on his details of his surroundings. The book No Uncle Sam receives a thumbs up in my view as a very good story and I cannot wait until this story becomes a movie.
