From High School to Flying on B-17 Over Europe - Growing up in the 40's!.......2006-09-29

We follow author and WWII veteran Jack Botts from his high school days in North Dakota to war and back. He gets drafted shortly after graduation and eventually ends up in Europe flying B-17 missions as a radio operator. In his book "Straight And Level (Growing Up in the 40's)" we witness a coming of age story of sorts. Readers will get to follow a young Jack Botts as he matures in combat.

The author uses old photos, edited letters home and historical facts to go along with his narrative. The combination gives the reader a full spectrum view of what it was like for those young crew members flying bombing missions over Europe. It took a certain amount of courage to get into those airplanes and fly until your 25 missions were completed. Botts doesn't make himself out as any kind of hero in his book and actually understates at times the dangers and the fear he must have faced often completing his missions.

I think real aviation buffs will love this book. This time period in history was one of the most interesting times for all of military aviation. Having the perspective of a crewman who actually flew on these missions makes the telling of this story much fuller and entertaining. That war changed the author, as it did to so many others of that generation; however, we can see only a glimpse of what those changes may have been in his personal accounting of those war experiences. The author effectively puts up just enough of a barrier that he denies the reader any deeper look at his emotional state during this time. But we get snap shots of his feelings from time to time and it paints us a portrait of what he must have been feeling.

You will enjoy reading this book and come to like the story teller as well. The author comes across as somebody you would love to spend time with. He tells his story and holds your attention. You come away knowing something more about the war but more importantly about the men who fought in it. Buy this book and read it! It will not disappoint you.

the moment i started reading this book, i just can't seemed to put it down! chapter after chapter, one reads about the crazy things these guys do, i highly recomend this book, specially if both of your feet are planted on the ground, definitely not for those who are afraid of flying! Spike Nasmyth is a consumate story teller and reading this book is like having beer with the man himself!

I am an R.N. who wholeheartedly recommends this book. During my last pregnancy, I purchased a used copy of an older volume of this book. I referred to it so often, I decided to upgrade to the more recent version during my 2nd pregnancy and bought one for my sister as well. Indispensable and easy to use reference!

Easy to Read Reference Book!.......2007-06-29

When I was pregnant with my first baby I read this book almost everyday. I was able to look up my concerns and read clear and concise information about my pregnancy. The over the counter drug section is really awesome and helpful! I kept the pull-out chart from the back of the book in my planner to reference as needed. Now I am PG with baby #2 and I find myself reading back over information to refresh myself on what will happen throughout my pregnancy. I have yet to think of a question that I have not found in this book!

If you are pregnant this book is a MUST HAVE!

This book is fantastic! It explains everything in a helpful, easy format. It makes it simple to find answers to questions in certain topics and cross refernces make follow-up questions easy to answer as well. Dr. Thurston writes with a happy, charismatic tone and unless you'd be offended by a reference to God creating the body to do x,y,z, I think this is one of the better pregnancy books out there. Also, it is very updated with recent scientific knowledge and advances. (I've read other books cover to cover and would truly not recommend What to Expect While You're Expecting. Most women I know couldn't stand it. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.)

MUST read for pregnant mothers.......2005-06-14

Forget "What to Expect When You're Expecting", 1000 Questions is a much better book, with a common sense approach! It is a reference-style book with answers to all sorts of concerns an expectant mother might have. I called it my "Don't Worry Book", because unlike most articles and books geared towards the pregnant mother, this book actually eased my mind. It gives very straight-forward advice to help you through those 9 months of change, helping you take care of yourself and your unborn baby. And it is conservative, which I appreciated. The author refers to "your husband" and also mentions God in the text. I find this very refreshing in our PC society.

I referred to this book nearly every day of my first pregnancy. It seemed to have the answer to every question I could think of. I especially appreciated the chapters on prescription and OTC medicines. I also often referred to the pull-out week by week calendar. I am purchasing this book for the second time. I gave it to a friend during her pregnancy who passed it on to another.

We bought this as a gift. And from what we have tasted it has come in very very handy. All the recipes are easy to follow and very descriptive. If you really don't know much about tortillas or if you are an expert, this book could give you a little helping hand. A great buy! Give it as a gift today.

I really enjoyed Sally Terry's approach to breaking down the "pathways" to help newbies see that many complicated patterns can be brought down to a level that any one can accomplish. The 5 shapes of quilting can be done by everyone and Sally shows you how to read quilt patterns.

I have used "meander" machine quilting in almost all of my quilts. I was ready for a change and this book pointed me in the right direction. I highly recommend this book to beginners as well as intermediate home machine quilters.

Mother Goose Time is a classic collection of rhymes, songs and poems for children. As a librarian who works with infants and toddlers I found this book to be an invaluable resource. Many of the nursery rhymes are familiar and bring back memories of childhood. The tips for interacting with little ones ring true and have very practical applications. Although aimed at the librarian, this book is essential for parents, teachers, caregivers and anyone who wants to get some toothless grins, touch the minds of little ones and start the spark that creates a lifelong love of reading.

This is a very facinating biography of a very interesting and eccentric man. John S. Barrington was a "pioneer" in the field of physique and male-nude photography. He was also very big on being "showy." This book is well written, interesting, and covers his life well from birth 'til death. It also includes examples of his work and pictures of the artist at various times and ages. This is a must read for those who like to read about interesting lives.

The worst trading book I ever purchased. The book is full of catch phrases and waffles page after page. Example: more than 100 pages of advice such as:
Don't trade scared (1 full page)
Be patient (1 full page)
Trade like a robot, wothout emotion (1 full page)
Always have a profit goal (1 full page)
etcetera
The book does not show any examples of successfully backtested strategies. Better go for "Trade like a Hedge Fund" from J Altucher.

A Sound, Friendly Read.......2004-04-05

This the type of book that benefits one early in one's trading process and merits re-reads after more experience. While there is very little from the technical point of view, the practical, "real world" advise rings very clear. People often buy books that are too complicated for their current level of understanding. Accordingly, they acquire more "knowledge" but not more understanding. Confusion can lead to a lot of lost money in trading. Thankfully, this is not such a book. It deserves a permanent place on the traders and investor's bookshelf.

Good introduction to day trading.......2000-09-20

If you are unfamiliar with day trading, then this book provides a solid conceptual overview for you. If you already know the basics and are looking for something with more specifics and greater mathematical vigor, then this isn't the book for you.

The book is well-written and easy to read. The continual focus on using computers and the Internet got to be tiresome, but this is primarily due to my background in both subjects. Others should find his coverage of these topics worthwhile.

Overall, a nice intro book that leaves a craving for more detailed information. Hence, this is not a book I would carry around as a reference or a guide.

Good Primer of Corporate Ethics.......2005-09-18

I had to read this book for a class, and found it very useful. The beginning does a good job of outlining various ethical frameworks. Later, various types of problems faced by businesses are described and then placed into broad fundamental categories. Finally, these categories are then analyzed using the various ethical frameworks described earlier in the book.

Each chapter has an ethical case study, where the principles of the chapter are highlighted for discussion and analysis. The authors have an obvious pro-business bias (of course), so the importance of business as a social entity is just assumed.

Overall, this book does a pretty good.
