      Book Description

This tale of two families is set on a grand scale, as James Thomas Flexner brings his talents to bear on his own noteworthy heritage. An American Saga is an historical narrative, grounded on documentary sources, which ends with the marriage of Helen Thomas and Simon Flexner. The account deals equally with the lives and the backgrounds of husband and wife, the author's parents.

Simon Flexner was the famous medical investigator, discoverer of the "Flexner vacillus" and the "Flexner serum," who became the creating director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) and eventually acknowledged leader of American medical science. The Kentucky-born son of impoverished German Jewish immigrants, he grew up in penury. As he never completed the eighth grade, he was almost completely self-educated when he appeared at the Johns Hopkins University before its celebrated medical school had been founded. Almost instantly he began making the discoveries that soon made him the leading younger medical scientist in the United States.

      Book Description

For the past twenty-five years, the internationally renowned marital researchers from the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver have been helping couples around the globe replace loneliness with connection, frustration with understanding, fear with confidence, instability with commitment, revenge with forgiveness, and monotony with passion. Their program is called PREP®, short for the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program, and it's been so successful that its creators have been featured on Oprah, The Today Show, and 20/20, and its benefits have been documented in The New York Times, USA Today, Womans Day, and Redbook.

Until now the only way you could experience this winning twelve-hour program was to attend a weekend workshop. But now, with 12 Hours to a Great Marriage, you can discover the simple, effective strategies that have helped thousands of couples— happily married, having issues, or planning to marry— to develop and protect their love, easily and at your own pace. Each chapter covers one of the key ingredients of the program, like Being Best Friends, Having Fun Together, and Protecting and enhancing Your Love Life, and shows you how to take the steps that research shows are the basis for a long-term, healthy, loving marriage. By practicing the simple skills, taking the thought-provoking self-tests, doing the fun and innovative exercises, and reading real-life couples' inspiring and informative stories, you'll find that in twelve short hours you'll be well on your way to having that great marriage you've always dreamed of.

3 out of 5 stars An OK Book.......2005-07-16

The Seagram's book is an OK book. It reminds me a lot of the Mr. Boston book. Unlike one of the reviewer's below I could not find "Caesar" in the book-maybe there is a newer addition than the 1995 version I have (although this seems to be the one that Amazon is selling). I also could not find some of the popular drinks like "Bellini" or "Caipirinha." I like the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide much better. Pulpfoto's review below says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide is A to Z like a dictionary so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. It seems pretty straight forward to me. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category.

      5 out of 5 stars Really great.......2005-05-19

I have a few bar books but like this one the best. Had all the classics plus a lot of other great ones. I really like that it included punches, hot drinks and non alcoholic ones also. Not a lot of written fluff, just to the point, once you have more than one bar book they can get redundant on the basic information, this one doesn't. It could have a better format though, a ring bound book is always nicest for laying out flat.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-03-23

I have just started working in a bar - I'm a British pub barman, not used to these poncy cocktails in Canadian bars! So I wouldnt look daft I went to the library, got all the bartending books I could (1 - Seagrams Bartending Guide) and ordered 2 others from Amazon (The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide and The Worlds Best Bartenders Guide). My first night I was asked for a "Caesar". The ONLY book that had it was Seagrams Bartending Guide - all the others with their 1,000's of cocktails - didnt have it. I have since looked at about 5 other a-z style "Ultimate" bartending guide at my local book shop. None had the Caesars. As an honest way of reviewing these guides - I'd say the ability to find the drink the customer wants - FAST - is the ultimate accolade. The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know? In all, Seagrams is printed on better paper, is hardcover so will last longer in a bar - plus you can lay it flat whilst mixing drinks.... And as other reviewers say, it may not talk about Brands - so what - you can read many guides, magazines and labels to find out about brands - but when it comes to drinks, how to mix them, tool and tricks of the trade the Seagrams guide is top of the pile by far. Excellent book!!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-01-18

This is a great book. It is easy to follow and has nice pictures. The recipes are accurate and make great drinks. I like how it shows what kind of glass is needed for each drink. This book has recipes for holidays and special occasions. Great book for the college student, bartender, and party host.

      5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......1999-06-27

Being a beginning bartender, I have found this book as a great help. It's easy to follow, clear, and concise writing style make it a welcome tool at my bar. The other fellow that reviewed this is correct though, it doesn't go into brands very much. But hey, working for a chain, I don't have any say on the brands we buy anyway. The recipe's are great and easy to find.

5 out of 5 stars Books for moody children.......2002-11-29

Frogmorton is one of my favorite books from childhood. It is the charming story of a group of animals who live together. It is tastefully and not-too-cutely illustrated by Ernest Shepard, who did the original Pooh drawings. (Not the Disney version, yuck.) It's a little melancholy. I would recommend it for a moody, intelligent child of around eight or nine -- seven if he or she is a very good reader and not terribly cheerful.

            Book Description

Darrell Sifford, an only child himself, has drawn from countless case studies and interviewed a wide range of psychologists to come up with a unique picture of the only child. He asks:

This is the first warm, personal, and enormously helpful exploration of what it really means to grow up without siblings. It will leave only children feeling very good about themselves.

1 out of 5 stars Jailbirds, Child Molesters, Bulemics and Workaholics.......2004-10-13

I was hugely disappointed by this book. The premises are excellent, and I read it in the hope of gaining some insights into parenting my daughter (who will be an only child). I did not receive anything of the kind! There were chapters about a jailbird who was an only child, an only child who was molested by her mother, only children with eating orders, and MUCH attention paid to only children who grew to become perfectionist workaholics. I wasn't sure whether to cry or to laugh out loud! The approach to parenting was outdated (particularly with gender stereotyping) and I can't think of one piece of advice that was helpful to me. I read the first half, and only skimmed the second half, paying close attention to the parenting section...but came away with nothing. I feel sorry for the author that he needed such a public outlet for his feelings about being an only child...and I'm a bit embarrassed for him.

            4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2004-02-23

As an "only child" raising an only child, I found this book very insightful and thought provoking. It gives the parents of an only a lot of issues to think about and evaluate. If you are looking for a specific fix for a specific problem, this is not the book for you. However, if you are raising an only child and want to know what issues you need to address, this is a book for you. Also, I think that being an only makes you realize how sensitive and important the issues this author discusses are. If you're not an only child yourself, you may not be aware of how these issues will affect and define your only child.

4 out of 5 stars From an only child's perspective..........2004-01-11

I grew up as an only child as this book accurately reflects the thoughts and feelings I had growing up and now today as an adult. I found myself laughing and sometime crying because I had many of the same experiences and the author. The book was given to me by my spouse and helped me look at myself and the things that I do which may adversely affect others.

1 out of 5 stars Very little real information, mostly the author's own angst.......2003-03-15

Ugh. I bought this book b/c my child will be an "only," and I hoped for some input on how to avoid some of the stereotypes attached to only children. Instead, the author seemed intent on using this book as his personal journal through which he explored his own issues from childhood. [yawn] It got pretty annoying pretty fast.

The author starts out by trying to say that the stereotypes about only children aren't necessarily true, and he gives a good argument that sometimes children develop traits for reasons other than their lack of siblings. He suggests that some stereotypes exist because -- once it's discovered that a child is an only -- people stop looking for OTHER reasons that a trait or a situation might have developed.

Unfortunately, after this promising beginning, the author blathers on interminably with a series of "I have characteristic, and it's because I was an only child." And we have to read about his perfectionist tendencies and how he wept on his wife's shoulder about how he struggled with them. [yawn]

All in all, I thought this book was useless, except maybe as a catharsis for the author's own shortcomings. [sigh] It certainly didn't offer any practical advice for raising an only child or addressing some of the pitfalls they face.

3 out of 5 stars What Happened to the Rules of Grammar?.......2001-11-15

The contents was good but the flow of reading was disappointing. There were commas where it didn't need it, there were new paragraphs when it wasn't necessary, and it the book seemed more like a personal journal where thoughts and feeling are written down without any organization. On the admirable note, the author did identify some key aspects of being an only child and has called to attention the pluses as well as the minuses. I do recommend this reading for any only child and whoever plans to marry one or have one.

Helen Colijn was a 20-year-old Dutch woman living with her parents on a small island near Borneo when the Japanese invaded in 1941. Shipwrecked, she and her two younger sisters were captured by Japanese soldiers and shuffled from concentration camp to concentration camp for the duration of World War II. This book chronicles their personal travails and the horrible sufferings of the British and Dutch women with whom they were interned. Perhaps more significantly, it tells the remarkable story of Margaret Dryburgh, a Presbyterian missionary who gave her fellow prisoners a means to survive spiritually: the vocal orchestra. Working from memory, she reconstructed the "Largo" from Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, and works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Ravel, and Grainger--and taught them to a chorus of prisoners. Even the often-brutal Japanese guards were moved by the concerts, Colijn reports. Although this book often glosses over the horrors, it is a moving account of some remarkable women and the music that sustained them.

                  Book Description

Helen Colijn's account of her wartime experiences is a window into a largely overlooked dimension of World War II—the imprisonment of women and children in Southeast Asia by the Japanese and how these prisoners of war responded to their dire circumstances. Held in captivity for nearly four years, more than a third of the women in Helen's camp died of disease or starvation. Yet their courage, faith, resiliency, ingenuity, and camaraderie provide us with enduring lessons on living. Though they had no musical instruments, the women had their voices, and from memory scored classical works for symphony and piano. The music that helped sustain them while in captivity is a lasting and precious gift of these women to a world that has witnessed far too much war.

This is a testimony to the strength of women and the power of music to soothe the soul. Music is a common ground for all people and this true story illustrates how beautiful sounds calm and restore our spirits and, in this story, that of the oppressors. There must be thousands of heroic folks who lived through this terrible war with strength and dignity. I am always glad to find another inspiring story.

I have not yet read the book, certainly plan on reading it. I have however attended aplay this past Friday evening. A local Community Theatre presented it and I was in great awe of their performance. They did great justice to the story line and I am so pleased to have been present. At the end I so wanted to stand up with/for them as they closed with The Captive's Hymn. The message of strength, courage, and spirit were felt by all in attendance. Such strength these women had, makes me proud of my female sisters!

It wasn't long ago that America watched "Paradise Road" in movie theaters across the country. Audiences were captivated with the story of a young girl and her family's struggle to survive imprisonment by the Japanese. Like many moviegoers today, the audience may not have read the inspirational work behind the motion picture. Helen Colijn's Song of Survival is a real story. The experiences that Coljin documents in her work are real. The author gives her readers a glimpse of her life, and that of the other women imprisoned in Southeast Asia by the Japanese during World War II. Readers follow Colijn through the experiences of a shipwreck, being captured, and being imprisoned for three-and-a-half years.

Based on her original manuscript written just after her imprisonment, Colijn's story is one of hope and perseverance. Many other books written by soldiers and survivors of World War II are laden with hardship and sadness especially those books detailing the accounts of brutality of the Japanese during their quest to expand their empire westward through Asia such as The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang. Colijn's story is unique in that it details true survival of not just the body of the imprisoned, but the soul as well. The women of the camp in which Colijn was imprisoned used music to life their spirits and "free their souls" from detainment.

Reading a book such as Song of Survival can open up a new door to the way in which we learn about prisoners of war. Colijn describes disease and starvation leading to the deaths of more than one-third of the population of the camp (Colijn 159-169). "Before our internment was over, twenty-six Dutch children lost their mothers," she says (Colijn 162). But all the while, the women kept their spirits from breaking entirely through singing classical songs and even performing vocal concerts among themselves (Colijn129-146). Colijn gives her readers an idea of the sisterhood within her camp among the prisoners. This feeling of family is often discussed within the realm of the formation of a brotherhood-such as is seen in Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose--of soldiers, but is rarely seen in accounts of imprisonment. The work is so poignant because Colijn is able to draw from true personal experiences.

The author teaches her readers that even during imprisonment, with just a little faith and a little music, souls will have the ability to wander free. By using an effective autobiographical format, Colijn tells her story from a very personal perspective. She recalls the events so vividly that it is impossible for readers not to feel the same emotions that the prisoners felt. Colijn's work is so well crafted that even her feelings of optimism shine through the seemingly unpromising situation. As trite as it may seem, Colijn notes that several women even made "liberation dresses" to wear for the day that their camp was liberated by the Allied forces (Colijn 129).

A book such as Colijn's is an important element in any study of World War II as it not only brings to light the idea of hope in spite of hardship, but it also shows what seems to be a neglected area of war accounts-the struggle of women as prisoners of war. A personal account of the struggles of being imprisoned by the Japanese that is so seasoned with hope is rarely seen. Colijn serves the women of her camp well with Song of Survival. With the work of one author, hundreds of women's stories will live on to be read by future generations who will bear witness to the events taking place-the immense struggle-during World War II. Song of Survival will live on long after the last survivor passes away. It will carry a message of faith and perseverance for the women in Colijn's camp who kept hope alive through their immense personal strength.

3 out of 5 stars Men might not have prevailed like this heroines........2003-04-08

When one reads of the hardships that Colijn and her fellow inmates lived through, one expects that they would have focused on survival, and thrown all other concerns to the wind. There were some who did, but not others. Many strove to keep a modicum of loveliness in their lives. Sometimes, all they could do was escape to memories of their past, either through daydreaming or conversation. There were instances, however, of actual impact on their current situation, including a refusal of some inmates to lick their plates(though food was scarce), struggles to live in peace and harmony with fellow inmates, and, most of all, the musical peformances.

You might imagine that if you were living in a filthy prison camp where people were dropping like flies, you would owe it to yourself to fight for your survival tooth and nail, even against the other inmates, and the furthest thing from your mind would be music. You would need to look out for number one, period. Colijn believes that many more of them might have perished, or, at least, might not have come out as well, had there not been a commitment to community and beauty in that abject misery. In a sense, this book tells about war heroines.

Song of Survival was read, with other texts, as research for a forthcoming production The Shoe-Horn Sonata, by Australian John Misto, and added immeasurably to the background knowledge of director and cast. What remarkable women!! How beautifully Helen tells her own story and that of the thousands of women and children prisoners of the Japanese in what we now call Indonesia. That so many died does not surprise when you learn of the conditions in which they lived; that so many survived is testament to true strength; that they can tell their story is true courage. Thank you Helen.

I also noted from the review by Leslie Terwilliger that there is a play version of Song of Survival and I would be very interested learning more about it. Please contact me at ipiuwi@hotmail.com.
