My husband and I purchased this book after falling in love with our local library's copy. This book really forced me to stick with the diet with it's six week's worth of pre-planned menus (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

This book is perfect for people who need a step-by-step guide to beginning and mantaining a low-carb diet. I would recommend this book to anyone new to the low-carb lifestyle.

My husband and I have followed the meal plans for the first low carb stage of this book. I fail miserably at planning meals and shopping right. I never have the ingredients on hand for anything good so end up with plain grilled chicken and bagged salad. The good news is that this comes with weekly menu plans and recipes for *ALL* meals including sides, shopping lists and prep tips. We have loved everything so far, have been stuffed, and are losing weight. I'm looking forward to the easy transition this book will provide to 40-30-30 which I believe is a more sustainable balance for folks like us who are moderately to very active.

Fantastic cookbook for South Beach Diet, Zone, others!!.......2003-07-16

I love this cookbook! It fits my way of eating perfectly! If you are looking for a book with 3g of carbs per recipe or something than this isn't the one for you. However!!! there are so many other diets that can utilize this cookbook: South Beach, Zone, Atkins maintance, low-sugar diets, low-glycemic diets, and just general good health eating.

A great addition to the low carbo recipes.......2003-06-26

I Bought Linda Gassenheimer's first book, Low Carb Meals in Minutes, and by following her regimen have lost 40 pounds and (unlike other diets I tried, incl. Atkins) have kept it off!

More Low Carb Meals is another tasty and easy to make set of recipes in the low-carbo diets guidelines. These recipes really work, and are really good!

Maybe zone-friendly, or "right carb" but Low Carb? No........2003-03-05

I must reluctantly agree that this book simply fails to live up to the title. Reluctantly, because Ms. Gassenheimer has again come up with a bunch of delectible recipes, from Pork Scallopini to a tantalizing game hen in red wine, and I'd love to add them to my collection. Unfortunately, as a carb minimalist, I really don't need the temptation of more potatoes, pasta, orzo, white rice...you get the idea. It makes about as much sense as "The Low-Fat Bacon and Pork Rind Cookbook"!

This isn't a matter of zealotry. There's a movement out there, separate from low-carb, to moderate carbs, zap simple sugars, and also moderate the restriction of fats. I've heard it referred to as "right-carb dieting", or the 40-30-30 plan. I applaud people who are succeeding on such a plan, which may for all I know be the best choice, for many. I'm sure people in that camp would do wonderfully with this book.

I hope, however, that low-cal writers, faced with the new popularity of low carb, aren't trying to ride the coattails of a trend by calling something what it is certainly not.

Beyond the colors... what fish do and why.......2006-07-31

New snorkelers are very movement sensitive. They are looking for things moving on the reef. The more colorful, the better.

After you get past this stage, you start asking questions. Why do some fish have a false "eyespot" and others do not? Why do some fish, well, swim like a fish, while others swim like a box of matches with wings? Why do parrrotfish spend so much time biting a nutrient-poor reef. Why not go after real prey?

These types of questions are answered in this book. Written from the perspectives of ecology and behavior (with the emphasis on behavioral ecology), the Wilsons put together a readable and accurate (to the standards of the literature in the mid 1980s) work on fish behavior. Fish are so much more deserving than simply lumping them into taxonomic groupings. This book helps you get to that next level, the "why" stage.

Interested in tropical marine fishes?.......2002-02-11

This book is outstanding on so many levels... It has a basic intro to coral reef biology and to the fishes. It then goes on to discus the various aspect of fish life. Eating, breeding, various interactions are all covered. Look for the parts on schooling and social life of coral reef fishes. etc... The authors manage to bring a large body of scientific reference material together and make it accessible to anyone interested in coral reef fishes.

If you are a diver or snorkeler then you will enjoy this wealth of information that will go along way to describe the intricate behaviors in this most complicated of habitats. If you are a reef aquarium hobbyist the you will learn why fish act the way they do. If you are a professional then you will appreciate the way that this book brings in the journal literature. There are 19 pages of bibliography, and although it might be a bit dated many of the articles are classics.

Going Beyond Identification.......2001-02-19

After I'd dived and snorkeled in the same spot more than a few times, I found myself wondering: what are those fish doing? Why are there such huge differences in what I see at 7AM from what I see at 5PM? Are those fish mating or fighting? While this book only begins to answer those questions--I'd love to see a newer edition with research since the early 90's--it does tell the careful observer what to look for, which adds greatly to the experience of diving and snorkeling. A caveat, however: if you don't already know the major fish families (such as parrotfish, surgeonfish, wrasses, butterflyfish, and so on), you'll find the book somewhat incomprehensible. I'd label this book as Step 2 in becoming a knowledgeable observer, with Step 1 as learning the fish families. (And for that, I'd get a regional guide for wherever you dive--the fish families are the same world-wide, although the species are not.) Note: while I criticize this book for being (slightly) out of date, that doesn't make the information useless--far from it.

A fascinating book about reef fish behavior for the layman........1999-03-01

We run charter yachts and take our guests snorkeling on reefs daily. I borrowed this book over 10 years ago, and still remember how incredibly interesting it was, not only for our own understanding of the ecosystem we enjoy so much, but also for the great information it gives us to share with our guests who are eager to learn about the beautiful reefs and the colorful fish they see. As another reviewer said, we can now go beyond just naming the fish we see and provide a broader explanation of their characteristics and behaviour. I'm thrilled to see the book back in print.

an invaluable volume for tropical divers and photographers.......1998-07-25

I agree with the previous reviewers--an invaluable, scholarly, and readable work that discusses such interesting but poorly understood subjects such as why tropical fish tend to be brightly colored, how schooling fish swim in close coordination, and whether anemones benefit from their relationship with anemone fish. It's a shame that tropical dive operations haven't made this required reading for their dive students.

It is so helpful to know how to buy ripe fruit, to know which fruits don't ripen after purchase, to know how to select and prepare various vegetables, and so on. One of the most dog-eared kitchen reference book I have........1999-05-05

If there's ever a vegetable, you see in the market but don't have a clue about how to prepare, this is the book to have with you or at home. It tells the history, several ways to cook, how to serve, and how to best appreciate usual and unusual varieties of well known and not so well known vegetables. I've been able to happily sample many new delicacies because of this book alone. I wish it was not out of print. I've given it to many, many friends and relatives as gifts.

Dr. Slesnick has done a wonderful job exploring runaway and homeless youth. This book gets into the nitty gritty of how things can go wrong and what the consequences are. It's a must read for any parent who has a troubled teen, and for the serious therapist working with these adolescents. Dr. Slesnick's exciting and informative book is easy to read and gives us an enourmous amount of information as it delves into the real life or runaway and homeless kids. I highly recommend it.

Well researched, lively and accurate, but really just a traditional account of Millais' career, telling us little new about the paintings. Ash stumbles on reviews which could have suggested a radical re-evaluation of Millais's late work, but he ignores the evidence. Nevertheless, it's wonderful to have reproductions of such neglected marvels as 'Caller Herrin' and the 'Ornithologist'. The reproductions are the thing here.

Great reproductions: gorgeous glowing colours in all their glory. Plodding text, though. Some good scholarly work - and for the first time Millais' later paintings are being taken with the seriousness they deserve. But that's about it really. We still get told the ol' story for the most part.

LOADED WITH WONDERFUL INFORMATION.......2000-12-28

I would highly recommend this book on John Everett Millais for anyone who has an interest in the life of this incredibly talented painter. From his early induction into the Royal Academy to his death, this book seems to uncover every aspect imaginable, be it good reviews or bad. I could not put it down. My only disappointment is that the photos of his work are all in black and white. I am not a scholar, but a layman with a keen interest in learning of the man behind such outstanding pieces as My First Sermon. I will read this book again and again, it is that interesting.
