Book Description
Born and raised on an Army base, Syl Castillo, an island boy of mixed ancestry, fancies himself as another John Wayne after years of living with the Americans. His idyllic world comes to an abrupt end when World War II erupts in the Pacific. Surviving the Bataan Death March and sicknesses, he becomes a guerrilla fighter against the Japanese for several years before visiting the U.S. Although not an American citizen, he gets drafted into the service because of the Korean War. After five years with U.S. Air Force intelligence units where he holds top security clearance, the government decides to deport him at the end of his enlistment because his stay in the U.S. and enlistment are deemed fraudulent. Neither the military legal system nor civilian judicial courts could find a solution to his seemingly insurmountable immigration problem. As the minutes tick off, Castillo finds help in the most unlikely places.

Book Description
Renowned for his theories of gravity and optics, Isaac Newton is now universally celebrated as a scientific genius, perhaps the greatest that ever lived. But he has not always enjoyed such legendary status. A reclusive scholar who wrote more about alchemy and theology than the natural world, he has been heroized by many, but denounced by others. His posthumous reputation has constantly changed and is riddled with contradictions.Newton is a brilliant and eye-opening portrait of our changing attitude to Newton and our intellectual heritage. Focusing on such extraordinary figures as Berkeley, Leibniz and Einstein, it charts Newtons transformation not only into a genius of science but also into a popular hero. Analyzing pictures, prose and poetry, Patricia Fara describes how Newton became a cultural phenomenon whose ideas spread throughout Europe to pervade every aspect of life. Beginning in the eighteenth century, when the word scientist had not even been coined, she reveals how the story of Newton is inseparable from the meteoric growth of science during the last two centuries.
Customer Reviews:
As the author says, a biography it is not..............2006-05-31
This book was a surprise to me. As Fara points out, the work is not biographical nor intended to be. It appeals as an exhaustively researched treatment of 17th and 18th century academic and scientific life in western Europe, of which Newton is portrayed as a centrepiece.
Interestingly, there is considerable focus on public image, public perception, academic politics and international academic rivalry. Much work also goes into the realisation of Newton as indelible national hero....the statues, paintings, medallions , anniversary celebrations, etc. Entire academic careers rose or fell on whether one resided in the Newtonian camp or not, and a whole section of the book goes to discussion on the nature of genius itself. Whilst I was expecting to get a better personal picture of Newton the man, the book makes clear how difficult this may be, given that his life and work are now 3 centuries past. That, and the fact that countless biographies of Newton already exist, many painting quite different pictures of the man, each from the somewhat subjective brush of particular biographers.
Very readable, enjoyable and breathtakingly well researched.
How we changed Newton.......2005-11-09
Most people see that Newton changed the world - creating a scientific world, a rational world, one free of superstition and the searching for vain outcomes (such as those of alchemy). There is no doubt that Newton's endeavours did bring a lot of this to pass. But, did he intend that? Newton was a complex character - part of which was an alchemist, part of which was a futurist basing his expectations on interpretations of Biblical verses.
In this book we learn how Newton's reputation changed, how Principia lead the world in its understanding of physics. Principia was less successful with metaphysics, which was eventually exposed by Einstein. But that same world turned a blind eye to other aspects of Newton - things that Newton himself took as seriously - perhaps even more so - than the physics on which his reputation now rests.
I took this book up because for a while I had been wanting to read more of the enigmatic character that Newton was. But this is not a biography. It is a component of the study of the history of science. I found it fascinating but the true Newton still waits for me somewhere else.

It's worth the $16.......2007-09-15
The exercises work for me and for the others I share them with. It's worth the $16. What more can I say?
Well done - clearly written - the exercises work.......2007-05-31
After years of trying different approaches to help with back pain I bought this after being intrigued with the title. I looked up the type of pain I was having, located it in the book, followed the clear directions, and it worked! My husband picked it up, used the same approach, and he's amazed with the results. He's a gym rat that exercises and stretches daily and couldn't get rid of his nagging lower back pain - but now with the stretches and exercises described in the book, they are under control. We've had to keep up with the exercises but my husband and I have been pleasantly surprised with the results.
Excellent results!.......2007-05-20
I got immediate relief for a nagging knee problem when I followed the suggested exercises in Peggy's book. I've continued to use the exercises on a regular basis and my knee is almost back to normal. The instructions are written in easy to follow language. This book could easily be a 5 Star "Plus" if the illustrations were just a bit more detailed. I've recommended this book to many of my friends.
Pain Relief -Quick.......2007-02-15
In the last year I had Physical Therapy for my knees & arm/neck/shoulder. I looked for books to continue doing exercise at home. Some books make you determine what is wrong with your body, but if you're wrong you can actually choose improper exercises and hurt yourself. This book has short, quick exercises that are similar to what I was taught at therapy, and I feel safe in doing them. If you want a program to feel better in general, her other book -Core Program, really has routines that are similar to what my therapist was teaching me. No muscle/ligamnet, etc. is an isolated thing. You need to develop the surrounding areas to really function well without pain.
This is a great book to have on hand........2006-11-06
I like this book because it has exercises used in physical therapy to relieve various aches and pains all over the body. It's easy to find what you're looking for and the exercises I've tried work. The illustrations are helpful. Having this book is a lot cheaper than visiting a physical therapist to get the same exercises, plus the whole family can use it.

One Tank Trips.......2006-07-05
What a wonderful book! It was so nice to read about Ohio wines!
A wine industry history blends with a guide to well over sixty wineries and vineyards.......2006-01-09
Think 'American wineries' and at first you'll think of California - and perhaps in modern times other states like New York may come to mind - but Ohio? Certainly it's not high on the list of what one thinks of as wine regions - but here is Patricia Latimer's Ohio Wine Country Excursions to provide the only comprehensive winery guide for Ohio, to expose Ohio's growing vineyard industry. A wine industry history blends with a guide to well over sixty wineries and vineyards and includes many maps and color photos throughout. Very highly recommended for any either Ohio-bound or interested in the state's blossoming wine regions.
Essential resource for Ohio wine enthusiasts.......2005-09-28
We have visited a lot of Ohio wineries and this guide would have been so helpful along the way! At least we have it now to discover more places to visit. The descriptions are thorough with great information (and accurate based on our experiences).
Hopefully this book will help to advance the Ohio wine industry as it is growing and many great opportunities await the midwesterner looking for weekend getaways.

best info on boudoir dolls.......2005-09-17
there is no other book that gives so much information on bed dolls called boudoir dolls. This is like a "bible" for doll collectors. You do not need another book if you have this one.
Packed with ideas crafts and collectors alike will appreciat.......2004-07-16
In Dolls Of The Art Deco Era, dollmaker Oroyan provides a survey of the history, makers and collectible items of the art deco era, providing both a step-by-step set of instructions for reproducing the style of doll popular in the era and covering the history of dollmaking during the era, and restoration techniques after. Packed with ideas crafts and collectors alike will appreciate.
Thoughtful, inspiring: Another Winner by Susanna Oroyan.......2004-03-26
For those of us who admire, collect, make and renovate 1920s and 20s-inspired art dolls, Susanna Oroyan has written a thoughtful volume focusing on boudoir dolls from the Art Deco period. Although the topic is covered better visually in another of my favorites, "The Magic and Romance of Art Dolls" by Stephanie Farago, the strength of this book is in Oroyan's excellent research, writing and wonderful storytelling ability. Her fresh and fun-loving writing style shines in this book (the illustrative drawings also are quite good.)
Unlike her other fine books, which focus more directly on the art, design and mechanics of doll-making, this book is a loving tribute to a period, aesthetic and style of doll that she very much values, appreciates and knows well. And for that we can be thankful, as Oroyan has contributed so largely to the doll-making world, with her vision, her instruction, and her art.
Highly recommended as another fine book to add to the resource library of "students of the doll."
superb.......2004-03-19
a real authentic and easy way to understand and MAKE dolls.
mrs.Oroyan must be a magician to write so many books,so variabile & so full of culture & reserch that is related to the art, craft, etc...
the book is reach, easy and wonderfull for the dollmaker! even

Customer Reviews:
Not much there, what's there is pretty good........2004-03-17
In this simple book, best-selling psychology author Biddulph provides rough outlines of a parenting method. The author is opposed to fulltime child care and physical discipline, but presents his opposition in a reasonably even-handed way. The book does present interesting new terms: softlove (tenderness, affection, making sure the child knows you love him) and firmlove (providing limits and consequences). Read "How to Talk so Children will Listen and Listen so Children Will Talk" instead.
some useful tips but I disagree with some areas of the book.......2003-11-06
The author gives some useful tips on being firm but fair and gives an interesting account of how daycare affects the under 3 year olds, but there are some areas of the book that I disagree with - for example, he gives a separate chapter for boys and girls, which in itself is ok - but in the chapter called 'Raising Daughters' he includes a compelling and heart-tugging account from a mother who has a severely intellectually disabled child -this was well worth including in the book but surely it should have been included in a section meant for both boys and girls, and not only in the section for raising girls? It should apply to both sexes. Also, he mentions in the section 'Raising Boys' that there is 'something precious and special about boys' - he does not say anything to the same degree about girls. In my eyes girls and boys are equally special. Having said this, the author does do a good job in persuading readers of the danger of smacking children, and even if this is the only aspect of the book that leaves an impression on people then it will have been worth the read.

Book Description
In this first full-scale biography of the artist Robert Hughes called "a kind of Bridge of Sighs between Surrealism and America," Nouritza Matossian charts the life of Arshile Gorky, one of the most mysterious of major twentieth-century artists. Born in Armenia, he survived the Turkish genocide begun in 1915 and arrived in America in 1920. One of the first abstract expressionists, he was a major influence on the New York art scene, which included de Kooning, Rothko, Pollock, and others. After a devastating series of illnesses, injuries, and personal setbacks, he committed suicide at the age of 46.
In Black Angel, Nouritza Matossian uses for the first time Gorky's original letters in Armenian and other new source material, writing with authority and insight about the powerful influence Gorky's Armenian heritage had upon his painting. She also provides an informed and important critique of the entire body of Gorky's major work.
Customer Reviews:
good history.......2007-01-11
I loved this book, however I love Arshile Gorky's paintings. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interseted in Gorky or the Armenian genocide. Great history. It is written more like history book than a novel. The most detailed account of Gorky's life that I have ever read. It is not a review of his art.
an overall disappointing book.......2003-05-14
I had very much looked forward to reading Black Angel after seeing the movie Ararat. I have been disappointed by it. Sloppy editing and proof-reading, two elements that should NOT have taken place, and certainly not in the best interest of the author, but I also found the writing to be monochromatic and not anywhere as interesting as I believe it could have been. When the subject is one of such passion and talent and intensity and fascination as Arshile Gorky, I would have hoped for something more polished and compelling.

Corregidor: From Paradise To Hell.......2007-09-23
I am lucky enough to have met Ben Waldron through family members that know him. I am not related to him in any way, but after reading this book, I feel that I know him better than some of my own family. This is a gripping true story of Ben's life, narrated by Ben, of leaving his family at 18 years old during the depression and joining the Army. Ben kept a diary for the three and a half years that he was kept as Prisoner of War under the Japanese. This book will take you through all of your emotions, and you will be left awestruck, bewildered, angry, sickened, happy and well informed about life as a soldier and as a POW during WWII.
Corregidor From paradise to hell.......2007-04-02
Excellent book. I read it in one sitting because it was impossible for me to set it down. The author tells the story in real language with no extra words. It really shows the horrors of being a prisoner of war.
Customer Reviews:
A POW's factual review of 4 years in a Japanese prison.......2003-09-26
This is a book written by my uncle Ben Waldron. His experiences from the age of 18 to over 22 years old while being a prisoner in a Japanese prison camp is factual in detail from a diary he secretly kept for 4 years. This is a piece of history that the young people of the US should learn from. After reading, his account of treatment as a POW for 4 years nothing can compare to POW's sacrifice as a soldier for his country. What is happening in the world today is tragic but it hasn't continued for four years. What kept these men going and surviving unbelievable treatment should be studied by our Military. What price freedom is explained in this book. Our county owes those men who died and lived through this chapter in our history the price of freedom we enjoy today. As a parent this book is required reading for your son, the experience of what others went through for us.
