Essential book for Canadian military history information........1999-07-05
Anyone with an interest in Canada's military history needs this book in their collection. Providing numerous bibliograhic information on books dealing with Canada's military history from 1867 to 1995. Divided into army, naval, and airforce sections each then divided into year groupings; pre WW1, WW1, WW2, and post WW2. Although there a few misprints, and I mean very few, this book is an absolute necessity to both the casual reader and the serious researcher.
Book Description
The name "Einstein" evokes images of genius, but was Albert Einstein, in fact, a plagiarist, who copied the theories of Lorentz, Poincare, Gerber, and Hilbert? A scholarly documentation of Albert Einstein's plagiarism of the theory of relativity, "Albert Einstein: The Incorrigible Plagiarist" discloses Einstein's method for manipulating credit for the work of his contemporaries, reprints the prior works he parroted, and demonstrates through formal logical argument that Albert Einstein could not have drawn the conclusions he drew without prior knowledge of the works he copied, but failed to reference. Numerous republished quotations from Einstein's contemporaries prove that they were aware of his plagiarism.
"The appearance of Dr. Silberstein's recent article on 'General Relativity without the Equivalence Hypothesis' encourages me to restate my own views on the subject. I am perhaps entitled to do this as my work on the subject of General Relativity was published before that of Einstein and Kottler, and appears to have been overlooked by recent writers." -- Harry Bateman
"All this was maintained by Poincare and others long before the time of Einstein, and one does injustice to truth in ascribing the discovery to him." -- Charles Nordmann
"[Einstein's] paper 'Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Koerper' in Annalen der Physik. . . contains not a single reference to previous literature. It gives you the impression of quite a new venture. But that is, of course, as I have tried to explain, not true." -- Max Born
"In point of fact, therefore, Poincare was not only the first to enunciate the principle, but he also discovered in Lorentz's work the necessary mathematical formulation of the principle. All this happened before Einstein's paper appeared." -- G. H. Keswani
"Einstein's explanation is a dimensional disguise for Lorentz's. . . . Thus Einstein's theory is not a denial of, nor an alternative for, that of Lorentz. It is only a duplicate and disguise for it. . . . Einstein continually maintains that the theory of Lorentz is right, only he disagrees with his 'interpretation.' Is it not clear, therefore, that in this, as in other cases, Einstein's theory is merely a disguise for Lorentz's, the apparent disagreement about 'interpretation' being a matter of words only?" -- James Mackaye
"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." -- Albert Einstein
Customer Reviews:
A little about the author.......2007-10-19
Do a search for Christopher Jon Bjerknes in Google or Yahoo and you will find his authorship of many anti semitic rants and then you'll understand all you need to know about the quality of this book. I gave it one star because if's useful to see how the anti-semitic, anti-Israeli industry manufactures propoganda.
The end of another taboo.......2006-12-19
That Einstein was not the original genius that his adulators have made him out to be was always known to those more familiar with his "borrowing". However, to my mind this is the first thoroughly documented revisionist treatment of the subject. If nothing else, it should prompt the legions of his admirers to issue forth a rebuttal to the serious charges brought forth. Such is the nature of scholarship.
Like other taboos of contemporary culture, the Einstein question should not be declared hands off from more close scrutiny. Yet judging from the largely ad hominem nature of the contra reviews elicted by this site, one must not be overly sanguine about the possibilities. The reduction of Liberal icons like Albert Einstein to more realistic proportions will not be an easy task, as the case of other media-propelled heroes of the twentieth century such as Marx, Freud, Lenin, and Picasso bears out. Those who have a vested interest in maintaining silence on controversial subjects will not throw up the white flag without a fight-- all the more reason to perservere in the struggle. Let the facts be known and may the chips fall where they may.
Nonsense for the credulous.......2006-04-18
Readers who have taken Bjerknes's claims seriously should be aware that he wrote the following nonsense about Einstein that is fully in accord with the views of the neo-Nazi Stormfront.org:
"The political Zionists, Albert Einstein chief racist among them, embraced the myth that anti-Semitism is the salvation of the 'Jewish race', in that it forces Jews to segregate against their will and better natures. Einstein hated non-racist Jews, though he himself had married a non-Jew... Jewish racists helped to put Hitler into power in order to herd up the Jews of Europe and force them into segregation."
[...]
John Stachel, Professor Emeritus at the Center for Einstein Studies, Boston University
has a devastating review of Bjerknes's book [...]
Quite Reasonable.......2006-01-31
I agree with some comments of reviewers that this book could be written in a better style. I can also understand other readers being sceptical of such seemingly "outlandish" claims as Einstein being a plagiarist.
However, I found this book to be an extremely valuable resource of information that is otherwise very difficult to locate. My library has two books by Bjerknes' and I read his book on general relativity first. Both books combined provide some really powerful evidence, and even if you are sceptical, then some good historical information. I canot find his other books.
Material presented in this book shows that the fact that Einstein was not original is a well-known fact in science community. I think these topics should be discussed further.
Enough Revisionism!.......2006-01-29
Bjerknes book is very weak and more along the lines of a national enquirer essay. His sources are weak. His logic is weaker.
Scientific essays are often based on the work which preceded them. Science is the study the observable world and drawing conclusions which can be tested, proved or refuted. Usually these theories are not created in a box but with a knowledge of the thoughts and work of others. Einstein did not live in a box but studied the works of Newton, Poncaire, Mach and the rest. Like most scientists he added his own tremendous insight and deductive skills to the problems of the day and came up with a totally unqiue way of evaluating cosmology.
The simple truth is that in a scientific paper such as Einstein`s field theory, (or any other) the reference is inherent in the mathmatics. You can't write a formula and claim it as your own as others are familiar with the formula and will know the source. But when known formulations are used to derive new equations, that derivation is a unique entity. Did Galileo plagarize Copernicus? Did Kepler? Did Newton plagarize Euclid? Did Oppenheimer plagarize Einstein? The truth is there were many thoughts about relativism and open vs closed universes etc etc before Einstein. It was Einstein who put all the previous discussions in persepctive to come up with his original theory on special and general relativity, no one else came up with curved space as a dimension beyond our senses but not beyond our rational capacity to understand.
Eisntein is regareded as one of the greatest minds of humanity because he truly was a intellectual and humanist giant among us. He did not plagarize or cheat, he did good science.
Giants always are targets of lesser minds who choose for uncertain motives to attack and slander. Einstein, fortunately, is one giant that forever will stand.
Book Description
Melanie, Annie, and Steven Ford all became part of one family when Melanie and Steven's father married Annie's mother. At the time of the marriage, the three children were in elementary and middle school. Later a new baby joined the blended family.
The book has a casual conversational feel following a loose Q&A interview format, as the children talk to each other. They discuss the feelings they experienced and problems they faced, and offer advice and reassurance.
Customer Reviews:
Would not recommend for school use.......2007-05-14
I bought this book but I really do not know why. I am a school counselor and do not find this very useful with my students. Their own stories are more powerful than reading these stories. To each his own, I would say. I would send it back, but the postage would be almost as much as the book, I think.
It might be a useful book for a parent to share with a child.
What a great little book!.......2002-12-10
My kids loved this book. It's written by real kids who have gone through their parent's divorce and it opened a dialogue with my children that I would have never had if we hadn't read this book together.
Really helpful.......2001-04-07
I am a recently divorced mother of two young boys, ages 8 and 9. I could tell the divorce upset them, but I couldn't get them to talk about it--until we read this book together. It is written by kids and they talk about how they felt when their parents divorced. My boys could relate and it helped them start talking about their feelings. I recommend this book to any divorcing parent with kids between the ages of 8-12.
Excellent book for children.......2000-09-17
I was looking for a book to give to my nieces because my sister-in-law was getting a divorce and the kids were having a difficult time. This book was recommended by a therapist. The book did the trick--helped the kids talk about what was bothering them. I asked the kids why they liked the book and they said because it was written by kids like them. They thought it was great. That's the best testimonial out there.
This book.......2000-06-08
This book is great for a pre-teen age group. It covers a lot of feelings that the child may feel and lets them know those feelings are ok. I would not recommend this book for children under 8. It is a little mature for children younger than that.
Book Description
First published in 1891, Pellegrino Artusi's La scienza in cucina e l'arte di mangier bene has come to be recognized as the most significant Italian cookbook of modern times. It was reprinted thirteen times and had sold more than 52,000 copies in the years before Artusi's death in 1910, with the number of recipes growing from 475 to 790. And while this figure has not changed, the book has consistently remained in print.
Although Artusi was himself of the upper classes and it was doubtful he had ever touched a kitchen utensil or lit a fire under a pot, he wrote the book not for professional chefs, as was the nineteenth-century custom, but for middle-class family cooks: housewives and their domestic helpers. His tone is that of a friendly advisor - humorous and nonchalant. He indulges in witty anecdotes about many of the recipes, describing his experiences and the historical relevance of particular dishes.
Artusi's masterpiece is not merely a popular cookbook; it is a landmark work in Italian culture. This English edition (first published by Marsilio Publishers in 1997) features a delightful introduction by Luigi Ballerini that traces the fascinating history of the book and explains its importance in the context of Italian history and politics. The illustrations are by the noted Italian artist Giuliano Della Casa.
Customer Reviews:
Great cookbook and excellent read, but not for beginner cooks or the faint of heart.......2007-07-18
This is one of the maternal Italian cookbooks in a very impressive lineage. This puts perspective on modern Italian cooking that you see in books like the Silver Spoon. This is more of a read than a cookbook, dont expect amounts or details, this is the cooking your mother does, so this is only for advanced cooks who are daring, and devil may care, be prpared to do alot of testing and know what goes with what, if you are starting out pick a different book, like the Silver Spoon, thats easy peasy.
Encycolopedia of Italian Cullinary Brilliance.......2007-03-20
A masterpiece, it is up there with the Larousse Gastronomic, a must for anyone who is inspired by Italian cooking.
Major Historical Text. Use it to supplement modern cookbooks.......2005-04-11
`Science in the Kitchen and The Art of Eating Well' by Bologna native, Pellegrino Artusi, recently republished in English with a new introduction by American food writer, Michelle Scicolone is a work originally written in Italian and published by the author almost 115 years ago. I was drawn to it by a very positive reference to it in Paul Bertolli's cookbook, `Chez Panisse Cooking'.
If it were not for this recommendation, I may have been inclined to dismiss the book as irrelevant to today's cooks, given the wealth of Italian cookbooks from Marcella Hazan, Lydia Bastianich, Michelle Scicolone herself, and a dozen of scribblers on the cooking from the various regions (Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Sicily, etc.) and `superregions' (north versus south) of Italy. So, here I am to say that there is much of value here for the foodie and the professional cook. For all you casual cookbook clients out there, you may want to give this one a pass. In spite of its title, it has absolutely nothing in common with the kind of kitchen science written by Harold McGee, Shirley Corriher, and Alton Brown.
This is not to say that there is no deep thinking about food in this book. The paperback has over 650 pages filled with 790 recipes plus an English and an Italian index. And, in all that space, there are hundreds of little observations about the right way to cook dishes. The problem for the amateur is that almost all the recipes assume you already know a lot about cooking, so lots of little details are left off. One of my favorite examples is in the recipe for veal saltimbocca (Veal cutlets, Roman Style). Artusi gives scant details on the size of the cutlet except that they should be a half a finger thick. He also gives no details about the sautee time except to say that the side with the procuitto should not be cooked for too long, lest it become too tough. On the other hand, the author takes the time to say that the veal should not be prepared with a whole sage leaf, as this would be too much. One wonders how large his sage leaves are, as I have made this dish several times and used a full sage leaf with no ill effects. To the good, I welcome the warning about not sauteeing too long. I just finished making a veal Marsala which turned out poorly, as the meat was too thin for my cooking time. Live and learn.
Probably the biggest disadvantage for typical American amateur cooks is that most measurements are made by weight. The fact that they are translated from metric into Imperial units does little good, as most kitchens are simply not equipped to weigh an ounce of butter or 2/3 of an ounce of grated Parmesan cheese. Thus, unless you use the book to provide supplementary insights to recipes from Mario Batali, I would place the book by your favorite reading chair rather than on the kitchen shelf between `The Joy of Cooking' and `Mastering the Art of French Cooking'.
As an historical document, this is really a great read. It was first published just after the unification of Italy and, while the book has many references to the geographical sources of these recipes, it does address the cuisine of Italy as a whole, at a time before Escoffier, when claims to dominance in the cuisine of Western Europe between Italy and France was a pretty lively issue. In fact, the author was criticized for being too French and by reflecting the practices of the French professionals working for the nobility rather than the practices of mother and grandma in the kitchens of Sienna or Leghorn. The most pervasive evidence of this French influence is that almost all sauces are strained before serving. I think Mario Batali would rather sell his firstborn before he strains an Italian sauce. But there it is. Artusi gives us professional Italian culinary practice among the nobility and restaurante chefs of 1890.
While the value of this book is unmatched, I give it only four stars to warn anyone to read the review carefully before buying this book with mistaken expectations.
If you are a died in the wool foodie, food professional, or cookbook collector, you must have this book. In addition to the recipes, there are dozens of stories, the kind which foodie readers really appreciate. For all others, consider a more modern encyclopedia of Italian recipes such as Michelle Scicolone's own `1000 Italian Recipes'.
Not a cookbook for the timid.........2000-08-12
This is a fantastic book, not just for the recipes, but also for Artusi's interesting and humourous asides. It contains a selection of recipes ranging from complex to very simple, yet elegant. IMHO it is far more than "marginal" as a cookbook. Because it is non-specific about quantities, Artusi seemed to assume that the audience reading this book knows what is what. Quantities are always adjustable according to individual taste, and that is the nature of real cooking. So in that sense, it is not a connect-the-dots cookbook, but a very good way to experiment with different variations of flavour.
He obviously recognized that his readers already knew how to cook. This is a book to give the reader various ideas about recipes and menus. Beginners beware, it will not tell how many teaspoons of something to put into your sauces. We're supposed to know how much is too much or too little.
It's a great book, and very unique among a plethora of same old-same-old cookbooks.
An Italian Must.......1998-12-22
Late 18th century cooking master Pellegrino Artusi created the "ethics" of modern Italian cooking, as evoluted from that which the Italians taught the French. The basis is that foods are to be tasty, but also healthy and digestible. The emotional value of Taste is thus spelled out by the Alchemist of Italian Cuisine. An absolute master with a hearty sense of humour. Not to be missed.

Fantastic!.......2007-07-27
I usually rely on our public library for all the books our boys read, but this one caught my 6-year-old son's imagination and he LOVED this book. So this is one I will buy for him to keep. He could not put it down, and asked me to read from it again and again. Of all the kids' books on birds, this one is great. Even I liked it, and I am no fan of vultures!

Book Description
The arrival of every new child is an opportunity for many in the community to celebrate. In Bless This Child, Unitarian Universalist minister Edward Searl has collected a wide range of poetry and prose for every occasion surrounding a new life: composing birth announcements, birthday cards, and notes to new mothers and fathers; performing readings at birth ceremonies and naming rituals; and honoring an adoption.
An indispensable tool for well-wishers, this collection will also provide quiet spiritual sustenance to new and expecting parents. The selections are contemplative, contemporary, and spiritual but not overtly religious. They are drawn from ancient and modern sources from the famous to the obscure and from various cultures and faith traditions. Many works are previously uncollected. Includes passages from Lao Tzu, Charles Dickens, George Bernard Shaw, Nelson Mandela, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Erica Jong, among many others.

Very good selections for UU dedications.......2007-01-12
We needed to find readings for our son's dedication ceremony and we didn't want anything too God-y. Out of the three readings we used, one came from this book. A very useful compendium.
Beautiful Collection.......2007-01-06
I purchased this book to help plan my daughter's Ceremony of Dedication into my Unitarian Universalist church. I had a real problem narrowing down the readings I selected for the ceremony since there were so many wonderful options! A beautiful book, great for planning a baptism, christening or dedication ceremony. Also would be a great gift for new parents.

Book Description
A love story in the form of letters to the author's young wife, who died soon after the bombing of Hiroshima.
More than fifty years after the Second World War, the scars left by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima refuse to heal. This compelling account of one man's experience gives a human face to the events of August 6, 1945.
For a week after the bombing, the author, who was an assistant professor at Hiroshima University, wandered the decimated streets of the city, searching for his wife and his youngest son. He finally located them, but his wife died just days later. Grief-stricken, the author wrote her a series of
letters over the next year outlining the things he had seen and heard during her last days on earth. In 1948, the letters became the first eyewitness account of an atomic bombing ever published.
This powerful record shows how one family's future was altered in an instant. Comprised of correspondence, diary entries and drawings, Letters from the End of the World presents the events surrounding the close of World War II in terms so personal they will not soon be forgotten.
"By the time we reach the account of Fumiyo's horrifying death on Aug. 20, which we see from both Ogura's perspective and that of his 11-year-old daugther, Kazuko, who kept a diary, the sadness and anger that have been building up through the whole book are almost unbearable. . . . The
uncompromising anger toward Japan's military leaders that is expressed throughout is striking and unusual."
Elizabeth Ward, The Japan Times
Customer Reviews:
PLEASE I ask you to read this book: A father from HIroshima mourns his family which we incinerated sight unseen.......2007-01-23
Please read this book, and think Fallujah.
First published in Japanese a few years after we dropped a nuclear bomb upon Hiroshima, a previously secluded and untouched shelter for families and children, this book remains a prophetic and instructive text for us today of the necessity to do everything we can for peace and the end to all killing and warfare.
Thou shalt not kill.
This first hand account was written by a father whose family was destroyed by our bomb, including small children, home, etc.
His wife died from radiation sickness a few weeks after we bombed their small city. To confront and control his radical and permanent loss, her husband, an historian at Hiroshima University, wrote to her letters regarding all that he knew about the event and its aftermath, using all of his formal academic skill as historian and first person victim of our bombing. These are his letters to her.
For another historical source, you might also read Hiroshima by Takaki, an academic historian working in the United States. For another primary source, you might find the eyewitness chronicle entitled Barefoot Gen by an artist who as a small boy survived our nuclear atack on Hiroshima while losing his entire family as does Professor Ogura here. Barefoot Gen may be the most accessible to the American reader for its graphic nature; Professor Ogura may be the more poignant though no less powerful first person account to the mainly literate reader. It all depends upon your personal learning style; the truth is one and the same.
Please study carefully and prayerfully this work of a grieving father and husband, so dispassionately and professionally presented as letters to his dead and dying wife, and fight with all that you can for peace, that our present carnage against civilian populations may forever cease and we may live in permanent and abiding peace free of this murderous sin and the national psychosis which drives us into unjust though materially profitable warfare, which provides us permanently only the continual guilt of the suffering and death here so clearly and truthfully and painfully portrayed.
Thou shalt not kill.

A very powerful Book.......2000-12-07
The book is a collection of letters written by the author to his wife who died from radiation sickness after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The letters detail the author's experiences as he wandered the city and pieced together what happened to family and friends. It is a very powerful book.
