Book Description
At forty, Mary South seemed to have it all: a beautiful home in Pennsylvania, a group of close friends, the companionship of two loving Jack Russell terriers and a successful career in book publishing. But shuttling between the conference room at work and her couch in front of the TV at home, South couldn't help feeling that she was missing something intangible but essential. So she decided to go looking for it where so many have before: at sea.
Six months later, she had quit her job, sold the house, graduated seamanship school and was living aboard a 40-foot, 30-ton steel trawler. Despite South's total lack of experience, the maiden voyage of the rechristened Bossanova was to be a journey up the eastern seaboard. Along with her crew (the dogs and her buddy John—her odd-couple opposite in politics, lifestyle and pretty much everything except a love of the open ocean), she set off on a fifteen-hundred mile odyssey from Florida to Maine. But what began as the fulfillment of an idle wish became a crash course in navigating the byways of the self.
The Cure for Anything Is Salt Water traces South's voyage from the charming Americana of Florida's Intracoastal Waterway out into the often stormy waters of the Atlantic. As the trip progresses, South grapples not only with whatever Poseidon throws her way, but also with the ghosts of family and loves lost. For anyone with a secret dream that's gone unfulfilled, here is a reckoning—both funny and poignant—of what's really involved in casting off an old life and making a new one.

Leave your politics onshore, Mary!.......2007-10-13
This was a terrific book on many levels and while I
would not hesitate to recommend it, parts offended me.
Why was it necessary to contaminate its freshness with
your politics? Why the references to NPR and the usual
knee jerk reactions to Bush and the war on terrorism?
I think it'd have been suffice to just reveal that you
are a liberal Democrat. No problem there but why date
this memoir with your preferences and, it appears,
your PC prejudices? I really didn't need that to enjoy your
seafaring midlife adventures. Take care of your doggies!

The Cure for Anything Is Salt Water: How I Threw My Life Overboard and Found Happiness at Sea
As a reader whose only experience with boats is a few crossings on the Staten Island Ferry, I still found myself hooked from the beginning of THE CURE FOR ANYTHING IS SALT WATER. Not only because it is a very funny book and a great story about leaving corporate life for the sea, but also because of the sharp reflections on the impermanent yet invaluable aspects of life and relationships.

The Cure for This Book is More Salt Water.......2007-08-29
Perhaps I should have done more homework. The book I read wasn't exactly the book that I thought I had bought. The subtitle, "How I Threw My Life Overboard and Found Happiness at Sea" gives a pretty good clue, though. There are essentially two parts to this book. The first is the story of a woman who experiences a mid-life crisis at work and in relationships, and goes forth to seek true happiness. The second is the story of this same woman looking for that happiness in buying a boat and going to sea. I had thought the book was really more the latter, but the story turns out to be more the former.
THE CURE FOR ANYTHING IS SALT WATER is competently written, as one should expect from a former book editor. The book is interesting, and the story told without artifice. When Mary South tells of her sudden, almost irrational interest in boats while living well inland in Pennsylvania, her experience will strike a chord with every boatstruck reader. But South's book is not likely to meet the needs of the boat or sailing enthusiast. It's not that she doesn't take her newfound interest seriously--nobody who quits her job and sells her house to buy a boat should be regarded as simply a dilettante (even if she doesn't take traditional methods of navigation seriously)--it's just that she doesn't write about boating with much passion beyond her love for her particular boat. What should be the centerpiece of the book, her voyage up the Eastern Seaboard, is reduced to a series of good days, bad weather, mishaps, bars, and some occasional local color. When it comes to boating, her prose fails to capture the poetry of the experience.
The reader learns that the real point of this book is to describe Mary South's midlife crisis, in particular, her losing interest in her career as a book editor and her being troubled by a lack of permanence in her intimate relationships. This in itself might be the clay from which a story might be shaped, but the effort falls short, clodlike. South, despite her humorous turns, tends towards the ad hominem comment: "My boss was a micromanager with an imagination that was significantly smaller than the stick up her butt" (p. 5). A Christian school administrator of the boating school South attends makes her wonder "what kind of crackpot school I had committed myself to"; this is followed by a rather poor joke on theodicy (p. 35). A boating classmate is described as a very intelligent guy "though a smart Republican is an oxymoronic concept to me" (p. 56). When an elderly couple out rowing express concern for the author's dogs, they are disdainfully dismissed as "Biff" and "Muffy" (p. 176). South's tendency towards personal attack, combined with her refrain of seeking isolation on her boat, leads one to think she's a misanthrope. But here's the thing: I don't think she is; she just gravitates to ridicule as a literary tool of humor. However you slice it, though, it's not very appealing.
In the last part of the book, South, who describes herself as a lesbian, discusses her surprising affair with a man. Her boat at this point is but a piece of inconvenient furniture. You may, like me, find yourself at this point happy that your voyage with South is nearly over.
A different kind of sea story.......2007-08-25
Whilst not being quite your average 'going to sea' tale, Mary South has written an engaging story of her staid but not quite straight life on land, decision to leave the steady shores for a life afloat; and the trials and tribulations of learning to handle a powered vessel at sea.
As she moves through new passages in her life and works at becoming a competent mariner, she reflects on her inability to manage relationships on land. These story threads are skillfully woven and net effect is compelling- I read the whole thing in one day.
sailing with power.......2007-07-22
as a sailor who sails with sails and our whole family does it was still a very fun book to read and know that some of the things she had to do were very hard and sometimes scary and ver dangerous....but she did them and that is something she will carry all the rest of her life.

Technology made personable.......2000-05-15
At first glance this might seem a technical treatise - and in fact those who study internal combustion engines will find sufficient detail to fascinate them. It is, however, a biography which covers the technical, business and personal life of a man whose contributions to transportation technology are far more widespread than his fame. The descendant of families accomplished in architecture and the arts, Ricardo was Cambridge educated at a time when most engineers in Britain learned from apprenticeship. His career spanned nearly seven decades, and his technological innovations found their way into motorcars, trucks, railroad engines and aircraft. John Reynolds pens a good read, and it will appeal to all with an interest in transportation history.

Not too good.......2006-01-18
I realized this book was written YEARS ago after I received it. With medical science making such progress. I have to wonder how correct the book is now.I have a dog, Muffin that has cancer and I am desperately trying to save her.
Great Recipes for Anyone.......2000-10-19
This book contains lots of healthy recipes ranging from wakame soup to eggless Caesar salad, bean burger mix to chocolate-banana shakes.
Also included is a section on mail order companies for some of the hard-to-get ingredients. An excellent addition to anyone's kitchen.
Just What I Needed at a Very Confusing Time!.......2000-05-25
I love this book...It's been such a help after finding out the shocking news that my husband has lymphoma. It uses all the "right foods" nutritionally speaking, to assist with his treatment plan. The food is delicious. So much so that I'm eating healthfully as well. I've found that recipes easy to follow and quick to prepare. It would have been almost impossible for me to figure out how to incorporate soy in our diets in such a tasteful way. I appreciate the book, the tips in it and the peace of mind it's given me in knowing the I'm feeding my loved one the best that I can. Thank you!

My Go-To Cookbook.......2005-06-18
I have a whole shelf-full of vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, but this is the one I turn to most often. Recipes range from simple stand-bys to fancy "just for company" dishes.
Yum!.......2004-01-26
I bought this book four years ago, when I was fourteen years old and new to the world of veganism. I'd tried many vegan recipes and for the most part, they were really bad! It didn't help that I was an extremely picky eater and grossed out by tofu, even though I tried. I also didn't have much experience cooking and that didn't help any. I tried a few recipes from this book and thought they were good. To show how good this cookbook is, I'm no longer vegan, but this is the cookbook I use the most! I still make Wake 'Em Up Pancakes once a week or so because they're the best pancakes I've ever encountered. They're excellent made with any juice you have on hand, though they'll be pink if you use cranberry juice and purple if you use raspberry juice. I actually use this cookbook more now even though I'm not vegan anymore (though I eat little meat) because the recipes are great and I'm a much more experienced cook now and am no longer a picky eater. My copy is actually falling apart now. I definitely recommend this book to vegans as well as non-vegans and my other favorites are 150 VEGAN FAVORITES by Jay Solomon and NONNA'S ITALIAN KITCHEN by Bryanna Clark Grogan (this is vegan as well).
Avoid Lakehurst, New Jersey If You Try To Stick With This Diet!.......2002-04-03
I tried my best to follow this book and PETA's minions of hotties. I'm trying to lose weight (LOTS of weight) and figured meatless food might just be the answer to a newer, slimmer Dipper. I found a copy of this book at a garage sale (oddly enough right next to fur lined gloves) and dove into the hordes of recipes. Cream of Celery Soup, Gentle Shepard's Pie, Magnificent Lasagne, Roasted Veggie Pizza, Butterbean Pate. I must admit, I had to grimace through most of these "meals" wondering why vegetables and fruits had to be so taste-free, but was contented in knowing that this type of food was sure to help in sending the pounds a fleeing. But (pardon the pun) I, along with anyone else in the vicinity couldn't help noticing a problematic side effect of all this doesn't-have-a-mommy food: gas! Huge, loud problems with man's next best friend! I was a toot-machine wherever I went. It was funny at first, even welcome at times, but when was this foul percolation going to end? Alright, maybe something different from "Cooking With Peta: Great Vegan Recipes for a Compassionate Kitchen" would do the trick. Pine nuts, curried dip tofu, "beefless stew", Wake-'Em-Up Pancakes. No dice. If my body was making helium, I could've floated into lower Earth orbit! My alarmed neighbors began calling me the Town-Tooter, my co-workers made sure I kept my office door closed and would only contact me by phone, and I began to wonder how many cubic feet of gas it would take to lose even one pound! After three weeks of flatulence and only four lost pounds, I knew PETA wasn't soon going to be happy with it's latest convert. My bemused doctor suggested solving this 'problem' by doing what humans have always done since the dawn of time: eat meat. A toot-salute to this sage advice sealed the fate of my Vegan ways and I hopped into the new Kia for a spin over to McDonalds! Since then, my turgid tummy days are past although, the Battle of the Belly Bulge is still far from won. This book was interesting and well written, but the side effects of this particular lifestyle on my particular digestive tract were explosive! It's fruits, veggies, and tasty meat in reasonable portions for this dieter from here on out. Caveat emptor!
200+ Pages of Tasty Vegan Recipes.......1999-09-10
Easy-to-follow, fun recipes sorted by meal or course: breakfast, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, main entrees, drinks, etc. Some nutritional information is provided (calories, protein, fat, carbs, calcium, fiber and sodium). I would have liked to have been given more nutritional information for each recipe. Additionally, some of the recipes are outrageously unhealthy (The "Nutty Zucchini Loaf" has 621 calories, 48 grams of fat and 449 mg of sodium per serving.) One important concern for vegans is overlooked (or perhaps intentionally not addressed to be as apolitical as possible) by this author: Some recipes call for a "greased pan." Some store-bought lards and vegetable oils are manufactured by large companies that repeatedly and unneccessarily test their products in cruel and inhumane manners on tens of thousands of animals annually. In a truly "compassionate kitchen," an informed vegan consumer probably would not purchase / use products manufactured by these companies.
Overall, the recipes themselves are excellent (5 star rating for the recipes). The book is easy-to-follow, well-organized, has a glossary of ingredients, and documents some informational resources such as web sites, other cookbooks, vegetarian groups, and more. Recommended.
Awsome!.......1998-08-27
This was our first vegan cookbook and we had a field day testing the recipes! My daughter loves the knishes and the vegan lasagne, and the recipes are easy to follow as well as delicious. Throughout the text are cute stories and tidbits of info for new vegans, and the introduction is a good explanation of the "basics." (Like what to do with that jiggling tofu cube, etc.) Enjoy!!

These 20 rubber stamps are illustrated with Chinese characters representing universal and timeless qualities such as peace, beauty, honor, and wisdom. The stamps are accompanied by a companion booklet describing the spiritual symbolism and literal meaning of each character—an interactive cultural journey and kit all in one.
Customer Reviews:
ok.......2004-07-06
the stamps are mounted on wood, and they are aprox. 1 inch square. the definitions are not on the stamps but are on a piece of paper included in the kit. the quality of the stamps and the red ink stamp pad are only so-so.
Beautiful, meaningful stamps.......2000-04-02
I had been searching for Chinese character stamps like these for a while and I'm glad I found them! As a student just starting to learn Chinese, I can recognize the characters just by using them! :) That's an added bonus, I think. The stamps are wood mounted and do not have the English translation on them so it looks very authentic. The included book by Barbara Aria is very helpful in understanding the historical background/cultural context behind every character. The kit also comes with a red ink pad and a sheet of paper to lay in the back in case you want to keep your stamps in the order they came in (which I do). By the way, just to help anyone who is interested, the stamp kit includes: happiness, clarity, beauty, wisdom, destiny, moon, courage, flower, forgiveness, grace, friend, harmony, love, honor, peace, star, spirit, tranquility, sunrise and truth. I highly recommend this kit if you want to add beauty and meaning to your stationary or whatever you want to stamp and learn a little Chinese as well!
Questions/.......2000-03-03
I am very interested in this kit but have questions that I am sure others will have. Are the stamps mounted with wood? What size are the individual stamps. Are the definitions of the each stamp scripted on the stamp? Thank you for you answers. Tricia
Book Description
It's Not Your Imagination
For some women, natural hormonal fluctuations create little stress or discomfort, while for many others hormonal changes can cause severe, chronic suffering. The simple truth is that nearly all women will experience a hormone-related illness at some point in their lives.
In this practical, solution-filled resource, women's health educator
Gillian Ford empowers women by giving them the facts.
Listening to Your Hormones illustrates the pervasive role hormones play in women's lives and reveals how to form a successful partnership with a doctor to find treatments that work.
"Women are wonderfully unique beings, and, finally, Gillian Ford has addressed our special hormonal concerns and needs. For the millions of women who experience emotional and physical changes from PMS through menopause, this book is a gold mine of information."
—Debra Waterhouse, M.P.H., R.D., author of Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell and Why Women Need Chocolate.
"Give[s] women an opportunity to take positive control of their own health . . . A crucially important book."
—Janine O-Leary Cobb, author of Understanding Menopause
Customer Reviews:
just average.......2003-07-11
I am currently reading just about everything out there on hormone replacement therapy and although I happen to own this book-I do not plan to keep it. It skims the surface, discussing pros and cons ad nauseum, which may be ok for some people, but eventually you have to step up to the plate and make decisions. This book, along with the writing of Elizabeth Vliet may tell you yes you have a problem and even help reassure you that you are not going mad-but those are baby steps. For myself, I want a plan of attack. This is why I vastly prefer ob gyn Uzzi Reiss book on Natural Hormone Balance. Perhaps supplemented with Dr. John Lee and Jonathan Wright-at least the guys offer you specific suggestions as a starting point. I live in the midwest and one does not find doctors here who know much about nhrt-so that sort of concrete help is a great planning tool. I am not negative about this author-at least her work is organized so you can quickly get to the section you need-so it is good as far as it goes. Which is not far enough for someone working to reverse the damage a tubal ligation did 25 years ago. Please do not assume a woman author is naturally your best friend. Competence knows no gender.
Very Informative.......2002-01-26
Gillian Ford has done her homework! The index of this book is worth the price alone. You can find what you are looking for in this book. She has listed the many references to medical literature in the back of the book which helps to back-up the information that she gives. She writes as if she is a detail-oriented, intelligent person. Other books that have been written on the subject of hormones for women, including those written by many M.D.'s, do not cover the topic as well as she has in this book. I'd recommend getting this one and getting Elizabeth Vliet's newest "Screaming..." book. But don't expect Dr. Vliet's book to have a very good index. You will have a lot more trouble finding what you are looking for in Dr. Vliet's book.
Listening to Your Homones.......2001-09-29
What great information this book gives. I was introduced to this book at Gillian Ford's Clinic in Roseville CA.The women that run the clinic are wonderful and and when you need more information you can refer to the book for the added help. If your headed towards Menopause, like I am, you can get some non-bias information in this book!
A must read for all women.......2000-05-25
This book helped me tremendously, especially the section regarding the thyroid link. For such a small gland, the thyroid affects so much and frequently gets overlooked by the medical profession. The author lists symptoms of thyroid disorder and even refers to the Dr's conflicting opinions on treatment for the disease. Women know how much hormones affect their body and this book covers it all. Every woman I know should have a copy because of all the hormonal changes that take place in a woman's lifetime.
The perfect tool for women to reach balanced health.......1999-01-14
Do you go to your Doctor's office, attempting to convey your very uncomfortable symptoms of PMS, Postpartum Depression,or Menopause, only to get a routine answer of either; a.) It's all in your head, you should see a mental health provider, or b.)Go on the birth control pill, or c.)It's something all women go through, go home and deal with it! These are all responses I have gotten in the past. I would highly recommend to any woman of any age to purchase a copy of "Listening to Your Hormones". This book is filled with answers. It addresses every hormonal issue a woman faces throughout her life. With book in hand there is no problem that can't be dealt with, with your Physicians assistance.
Arm yourselves ladies! This is a must for everyone, spouses included!

Book Description
From his school days with a certain Jean Chrétien to his meetings with such renowned scholars and poets as the Krishnamurtis and spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama, and his travels throughout the Middle East and the Americas, this is a fascinating portrait of an artist, a traveller, a seeker. Interviewer Linda Ghan takes Petit from his rural beginnings in Shawinigan to his peripatetic existence today, and we come to know a man whose grand curiousity brings joy and beauty into the world.
When most of us consider life in the priesthood, a cloistered, removed existence comes to mind. But Gaston Petit belies the stereotype. A widely travelled Dominican priest, Petit has earned an international reputation for his art, not just in painting, but also in stained glass, church design, silkscreen and wood block prints, sculpture and mural installation, with works in major museums and collections throughout the world. Colour reproductions highlight some of Petit's rich and varied oeuvre. While he has been stationed in Japan since 1966, Petit retains strong Canadian roots, spending half the year on the north shore of his beloved St. Lawrence, and half the year in Tokyo. Petit seamlessly combines East and West, exploring both the artistic and spiritual traditions in both.
