Book Description
An estimated two million Americans alive today have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Each one of them lives with the fear of recurrence, and for good reason: for at least a third of women diagnosed with breast cancer, the disease will eventually spread. When this happens most people assume it means an immediate death sentence. The reality is often different, as explained in Advanced Breast Cancer: A Guide to Living with Metastatic Disease. Newly updated and revised, this is the only book on breast cancer that deals honestly with the realities of metastatic disease, yet offers hope and comfort. All aspects of dealing with the disease are covered, including:
- Coping with the shock of recurrence
- Seeking information and making treatment decisions
- Communicating effectively with medical personnel
- Managing pain and symptoms of disease progression, as well as treatment of side effects
- Getting emotional support from other patients, friends, and family
- Finding new ways to discover meaning in the midst of adversity
Frank and moving descriptions from those who have been touched by metastatic disease make their stories meaningful to anyone who faces a life-threatening illness, whether they are talking about making end-of- life decisions or keeping hope alive. Women with metastatic breast cancer generally go on to live with their disease, often for many years. Through facing the reality and gathering information and support, the time that they have can be full and meaningful. Of the dozens of books and other resources dealing with breast cancer, few discuss the realities of metastatic disease. Advanced Breast Cancer gives a voice to the side of breast cancer no one wants to hear about, with stories of extraordinary ordinary people, forced by circumstance to call on resources in themselves and their families they never knew they possessed. It remains the only book on the market to offer authoritative information and hope as it empowers those who live with the challenges of metastatic disease. This comprehensive new guide provides updated resources and treatment developments, including novel formulation of conventional drugs, as well as the latest therapies being developed in cancer research labs today.
Customer Reviews:
I'm so grateful this book exists!.......2005-11-28
Advanced Breast Cancer was the first book I read after getting the news that my breast cancer had spread to the bone. I had read Musa Mayer's story of her personal experience with primary breast cancer, Examining Myself, only a year before when I faced Stage II cancer, and found it completely absorbing. I was unsure, however, how she would deal with the subject of metastatic disease, which she does not herself have.
I am so grateful for her treatment of the subject. While Advanced Breast Cancer is not an easy book to read, and is perhaps not suited to those who are still in shock and very frightened, it provides the kind of clear information that ultimately relieves fears of the future, rather than exacerbating them. Information from a "factual", medical point of view is good and necessary, but I always find myself asking, "But what will really happen? Will I be allowed to suffer?", or be abandoned, or treated as "less than". As the one man profiled in the book notes, "One thing I have thought about in the past is that there are no lessons on dying. For many, death is not the problem, but rather the process of dying. No one can teach you that, and it's an unknown territory". It is true that we will all face death essentially alone. This book, however, allows us to glimpse the ways others have journeyed toward that "good night", and makes us feel somewhat less alone.
If this book scares you, put it away for a while. But don't discard it. You may come to a time when it tells you exactly what you want to know.
Very depressing.......2005-09-07
This book is very well written, but very depressing. As a woman with advanced breast cancer, I face each and every day with joy and happiness. Each day is a gift, and I plan to unwrap many more. I fill my mind with positive thoughts about LIVING, about being that statistic who makes it, about willing my cancer to go away. And it is. When I was first diagnosed, I purchased this book because I intend to live, and this book promised a guide to that. I ended up in tears after only a short time of looking through this book, because it is more of a guide to dying.
Down to earth and validating.......2004-03-13
I bought this book two years ago, right after my diagnosis of breast cancer and after I received my pathology report - which indicated I was apt to end up with recurrence or spread. This book was not at all what I expected. I was expecting a guide to treatment options - dry and factual. What I got instead - showed that others had dealt with this very difficult issue and so could I, if need be. I passed the book on to a friend already in this position. Now, two years later, I am facing metastatic disease myself and have bought my own copy of the book again. Knowing that others have gone before me makes it easier for me to handle myself. Thank you, Musa.
Comprehensive and Frank Source of Information.......2002-03-29
As the spouse of someone with metestatic breast cancer, I highly recommend this book. It is a very emotional read on a very difficult subject. For months, I searched the Internet, libraries and bookstores for information. Friends sent some of the more popular cancer books. But nowhere could I find a comprehensive source of information on advanced stages of breast cancer. I didn't need a book on initial stages of cancer, miracle cures or a motivational story of one individual's treatment. I wanted a book that realistically addressed advanced stage cancer. This was the book I was looking for, and the book that provided the most help. The medical information provided is presented in a logical and solid manner. The personal stories communicate the emotional and practical implications of the disease. The writing style is articulate, concise and interesting. Musa Mayer has done an amazing job with a horrible subject.
I recommend you read some of the excerpts posted on this site, prior to ordering. They provide a good indication of the subject matter and the manner it is presented. I found this book personally very helpful. It has proven to be a trusted reference, and a tremendous source of both medical and personal information.
A realistic but gentle approach to a scary disease.......2002-02-15
Breast cancer is so much more complicated than removing the breast(s). I have a feeling that many people don't figure this out until they have been diagnosed with it. Then, you have to take a crash course in Cancer 101. It is intimidating and scary to make decisions about something which you know nothing about.
Musa makes it easy to comprehend a lot of the technical information. She has a way of breaking down the many facets of this disease, and bringing order to a complex issue. It is easier to digest so much information and make informed decisions when someone has completed an outline of the puzzle for you.
As an early stage breast cancer survivor myself, I was apprehensive about reading this book. Why borrow trouble; ignorance is bliss. But, considering that my mother was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer less than a year ago, reality seemed like the viable option for me.
Fear of breast cancer returning or spreading can be just as difficult as treatment for cancer. I felt calmer after reading about some of the people Musa profiled in her book. It's hard to explain this in a book review, but sometimes people have a way of saying things (or writing them) that makes them less overwhelming. The way that Musa has "explained" advanced breast cancer made it easier for me to relax and realize that there are just some things that you have to deal with...and you can.
Musa's book provided validation for my mother that she had made educated treatment decisions. It gave me a clearer picture of my mother's disease, and most importantly - a lot of hope. I probably won't have to deal with breast cancer again. If I do, I will be prepared (and armed) with valuable information.

fantastic cookbook and reference.......2006-01-04
This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever used. So far, every recipe has been excellent, and it is interspersed with lots of text referencing aromatherapy and insights to healing. I love the layout and especially its inclusion of desserts with no refined sugar. It promotes a healthy lifestyle and diet and included many pieces of new information and new cooking ideas.
Very well written and researched.
Book Description
Sara Stein is nuts about animals. Over the years she's raised a monkey, a coyote, and a horned toad, and she came within a heartbeat of taking home a wallaby. In this mammoth pet encyclopedia she identifies dozens of unusual and not-so-unusual critters that make great pets in the house, in the yard, and in the wild. Stein even suggests temporary pets kids can bring home to observe overnight and return to their natural habitat the next morning.
Stein's recommendations suit every domestic situation. Skunks, for example, work well in an apartment. A big backyard is ideal for keeping a goat or two. If parents don't want a pet running through the house, tarantulas are happy in a nice glass vivarium. And if indoor pets are out of the question, Stein explains how to befriend the pigeons in the park or the rabbits in the yard.
For all her enthusiasm, Stein takes a common-sense approach to pets. Each entry discusses diet, housing, special problems, life span, and just how tame you can expect the pet to become. She also tells you whom to call if you wind up with a sick snake or an angry parrot. Stein devotes an entire chapter to which type of vivarium, aquarium, serpentarium, cage, or hutch is best suited to which creature. She even explains how to build an inexpensive-but-comfortable habitat.
Whether you like them furry, slithery, slimy, or scaly; whether you want one that swims, crawls, leaps, flies, or hardly moves at all, you'll find a pet in this book suited to every family's taste.

Nice work!.......2005-10-28
There's a lot of pap on the animal/pet book market, but this one rises above the rest. Written clearly and with personality and experience, Sara Stein also includes diagrams on how to construct shelters for the animals in this book. Great job!
A book to return to again and again!.......2005-06-19
I highly reccomend this book if you to are a mass-animal (especially pets) lover, such as my self. This book covers so many awesome pets. It covers a very wide range of pets, from reptilians to rodents! Spot on!:) Get it at your local library if you can't buy it! Believe me, you'll check it out again and again!
One of the greatest pet books ever..........1999-08-09
Unlike most pet books "Great Pets" offers very serious and consise pet care information in a very easily followed format. I bought 'Great Pets' in the 70's from one of the book clubs that are designed for children. It formed the foundation of what I know about raising animals. The results over the years have been amazing.
I now have canaries that have been with me for years. I have had dogs, cats, ferrets, alligators, fish, turtles...and more. Not all at once by the way. My vets have been quite suprised at the care, health and longevity that my pets have experienced.
'Great Pets' set this foundation. To the author I am greatful. Not only is it filled w/all sorts of information about pet care, but, you will find plans for building anything from an insect cage to chicken coop to goat house. If you are serious about having good healthy pets for you or your children stop reading this and scroll up and hit your 'one-click' or add to your shopping cart.
It is a darn shame this book is out of print. It is definately worth updating and re-publishing.
The best, most comprehensive book on pet care I've seen!.......1999-06-22
I purchased this book as a kid in the 70's and think it is probably still my favorite book. The author knows what she is talking about and gives great advice on care of "pets" as diverse as crickets and salamanders to goats and dogs! The sections on building homes for pets is great. For kids and adults, this book is an informative and fun reference on animal care and responsible pet ownership!
A Book that will cover all the pets you ever imagined..........1999-06-10
This book is by an author who has kept hundreds of pets over the years. She knows a lot about the pets that you may never even think of. This book is good for deciding what pet is good or you and a great start on keeping one of the tons of pets listed. It also includes a construction of the homes or cages for each pet, plus a instructional on how to make it. ;-)
