A Golden Career in a Goden Age.......2006-12-21
First I want to talk a little bit about the way this book is published. I suspect that Mike Granat sent the manuscript of this book to several mainstream publishers and got a series of rejection slips for his effort. In the old days that would have been the end of this book. Undeterred, he then turned to a so called 'on-demand' publisher that has newer sophisticated equipment that allows them to publish books in very low volumes, and just in time to meet the demand from customers. This type of publishing, combined with the power of Amazon and the internet allows this book to see the light of day when it otherwise probably wouldn't.
And this is good, because this is an excellent book. Mike enlisted in the Navy in November of 1939. Because of the long waiting list he went into the Aviation Machinist School, and over the next couple of years alternated various technical schools with squadron duty in a flying boat squadron.
Nine days after the attack he was at Pearl Harbour and soon thereafter was in the South Pacific in a PBY 'Catalina' unit. These were the lean times when aircraft were hard to get. Their squadron flew endless patrols, and began to take the fight to the Japanese using bombs and torpedoes. This became the famous 'Black Cats' that attacked at night coasting in at very low engine power to reduce the noise.
In 1943 Flight Training finally opened up and he became a pilot, an officer and a gentleman. This began a career in Naval Aviation unlike many others. He flew in over 30 different types of aircraft from a 150 HP Culver Cadet to the Lockheed Super Constellation with four 3200 HP engines. Included were fighters (Hellcat, Bearcat, Tigercat, early jets), flying boats (PBY, Albatross) and more transports than I could count.
I was reminded again and again of the old saying that flying is 99+% boredom, and moments of sheer terror.
Mike is correct that this was indeed the Golden Era of Naval Aviation. Never again will there be such rapid advances in technology, so massive efforts at putting out a Navy of this size. This is a most interesting book showing a side of the Naval service not seen by outsiders.

not that great.......2007-06-13
kevyn aucoin's books are wayyy better i got this book for really cheap and it still wasnt really worth it. its mostly just about trish mcevoy and how she got started and mostly just about her. it isnt much of a teaching manual.
I paid for a long, boring ad for her products..........2006-02-27
but more power to her, because I should have known better, as I have purchased some of her cosmetics in the past and they were satanically awful--greasy lipstick, even greasy smeary powder shadows.
If you like to read someone pimping herself and her products without giving you one even one useful piece of information, buy this book.
For me, this one if for the trash bin. This book doesn't even merit recycling.
A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.......2005-03-18
I wasted my money purchasing this book. I had hoped it would be like Linda Meredith's fantastic "The Complete Beauty Book" (from the mid 1980's, and now sadly out of print - check out Abebooks for second-hand copies) but this is utterly useless.
What few pictures there are in Trish's book, ALL show the models in little, none, or "natural" make-up, with no examples on the use of colour or different styles at all. Even the extremely few "Level-3" make-up styles shown in the few pictures only show very neutral and natural shades/styles. A pointless book in every way.
I was so disappointed that I refused to give it shelf space. It now resides in the trash! It was only not returned because, living in Britain, it would have cost me more than the price of the book to return it to the U.S.
Should be called "ode to makeup".......2004-02-09
This is a coffee-table book, not a helpful how-to book. I can see how someone who is already very knowledgable might like it, as it is almost a sonnet to makeup.
I had been hoping for something to help me start applying makeup after many years away from it, and I found only about eight pages that were useful to me. I bought this as an investment in my own personal grooming, and as that it fell completely flat. I gave it two stars because it is not totally without merit.
Autobiography?.......2004-01-14
Although this book was somewhat helpful deciding what products were really necessary in my makeup bag, I felt that it was more of Trish McEvoy's autobiography than anything. If I want to read a book on makeup, I would like the majority of information to be ON makeup. Granted, it is good to know who the author is and how they know what they do, I do not need to know everything about her experience and her husband's job. In some places, it did have fairly average how-to information. If you want to know more about makeup and what looks good, I would suggest reading any of the Bobbi Brown beauty books.

Marvellous desserts.......2007-09-23
The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Book of Desserts
The book not only has great recipes for very goods desserts. As with all food in a cookbook, these of course look like they have been made by a professional. But by following the excellent explanations and pictures descibing how to make the decoration yourself, they may actually come from your own kitchen. My daughter followed the how-to-do-it when making two of the most wonderful looking cakes from the book for an auction to benefit a family who lost everything in a fire. They were auctioned and raised 500 dollars!
Simply wonderful.......2007-03-31
I was searching for a cookbook mostly focused on desserts for a family friend. She is recently learning how to cook so I wanted to get her something with lots of picture to make everything clear for her. I've found this book, I own a good housekeeping step by step cookbook. Initially I thought this book probably doesn't have enough pictures per recipes (because step by step didn't have it) but I was wrong. I saw almost all recipes came with at least one picture and often multiple pictures to show you step by step process (like a true step-by-step book). In addition, the desserts were very sophisticated and the book covered wide range of topics. Now I'm thinking about buying myself one copy.
If you are still skeptical you can take a peek on google books, it'll sure change your mind (too bad Amazon doesn't have an inside look for this book).
Fantastic starting dessert book.......2006-05-31
I bought this book for the extremely helpful pictures! Not only do they show the final product, but they also show many of the individual steps.
It's a great book for beginning chefs, and I think that on the whole, the recipes are OK and the presentation could use a little work, but I'm overall very pleased. The pages are thick and the paper is of high quality.
Brains and Beauty.......2005-09-06
I bought this book beacause of the beautiful chocolate cake on the cover ( I am a card carrying chocoholic). As I flipped through the book, I realized that each recipe had at least one picture of the finished product. Several had multiple pics essentially visually walking you through the recipe prossess.
The recipes that I tried were simple; I made the Peach Custard Pie and the Bannana Souffle'. The crust for the pie was so simple to make and tasted exellent. The recipes also seem to work with improvisation; the peaches I bought for the pie were not sweet or tasty and they were hard, so I cooked them down in a sugar sauce to make them taste good, and the pie still turned out well. I also did that to the bannanas for the souffle' will wonderful results.
This book has tips on garnishing, basic dessert sauces, deorating, crusts, and different types of dough, basic frostings, basic cake recipes, the best time of year to buy fruits. I could go on, but this review would be two pages long.
There are also some semi-homeade recipes in here also.
I will take away one star because the useful hints are in a separate section in the back of the book and not with the recipe that you are using. I would reccomend that you review the section in the back before baking, and if there is anything that you need to know, you can read it at that time.
The only dessert book to own.......2005-02-22
We all collect cookbooks of every type. How many can you say that you actually use more than once. I've owned this book for many years and when I am looking for a "no brainer" to make dessert, I grab this book first. I have made so many of the desserts in this book, each one has come out excellent, exactly like the picture shows. The full color pictures make it a breeze. This is the perfect book to give to everyone you know. It not only gives pictures (many for each dessert), a full list of ingredients, but how long you will need to put it together from making to when you can serve. Perfect for the first timer.

The retro chic of the 1970s has once again made macramé hemp jewelry popular. But far from looking dated, the designs in this book offer a fresh take on a traditional craft, giving new life to an old fiber art with a few dozen easy projects. With simple knotting, braiding, and cord-weaving techniques; several yards of hemp cord; and some interesting beads, you can create necklaces, bracelets, earrings, eyeglass chains, and other accessories. Straightforward directions, helpful diagrams, and color photos of all the finished pieces offer such choices as the Ocean Waves Choker, Millefiori Twist Necklace, Touch of Nature Anklet, Cat Toy Watch Holder (a wonderfully dangly necklace that sports a watch for a pendant), African Amulet, or Carnival Ride key ring. The items also make nice gifts, especially for retro-captivated but hard-to-shop-for teenagers. --Amy Handy
Book Description
“Directions, all shown in color, are clear and simple, and the knotting pattern is shown in a schematic diagram. ...There are styles here to please all ages and tastes. A wide variety of closure options are also shown. I particularly like several of the lacy necklaces, the watch strap, and the amulet pouch.”—Bead & Button. “All ages will enjoy the projects, teens to those of us who remember macrame from many years ago.”—Quick & Easy Crafts.
Customer Reviews:
Awsome Projects!.......2006-03-18
These projects are really cool. More than likely though you won't have the exact type of beads but they still come out good when you improvise. The instructions are very dry and they don't show you how to add cords when they get short. Also noticed that you need more cord length than it states. But that could just be my way of knotting. I've made lots of phatty hip looking chokers that get praise from the cool cats. Lots of nice stuff for the begginer to the advanced knotter.
Oh so pretty.......2005-08-31
This book is filled with great projects and wonderful pictures. I don't recommend it if you have no knotting experience what so ever, like me. It goes over the basics very breifly and left me wondering if I was doing the knot correctly or not. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for some ideas and you already have the know how.
Max 3 stars.......2005-05-26
Color pictures...that's all this book has to offer. The knotting instructions are vague at very best, and the projects all look essentially the same--a mess. In a nutshell, this book is for hemp weavers who already know what they're doing and want to try out something a little different. To all hemp weavers, I recommend Max Lunger's "Hemp Master" books instead of the above waste of glossy paper and glue. Lunger's instructions are beautifully detailed, and his projects are infinitely more pleasing to the eye.
All kinds of knots!.......2004-11-22
I got this book for my teenage daughter who learned basic macrame from a book. This book expands her techniques and gives her many more design options. It begins with a section showing different types of knots with diagrams on how to make them. The drawings are good, but because of all the threads intertwining, you have to be a person with patience to study the diagrams and follow them step by step.
The next section has quite a number of jewelry designs using all the different types of knots and incorporating beads. The instructions are as good as they can be, with a large, clear photo, a list of materials, a list of the knots used, written instructions and a diagram that shows how the necklace (or bracelet, etc.) is laid out... that is, where all the knots and beads are along the strand.
Even the beginner's "Simplicity Choker" is attractive, and more advanced designs are quite unusual, including scallopped edges, split strands, pendants, and beads placed in a flower shape. Very nice! I admit my daughter can sit for hours doing this, but she has had a lot of fun and pride in her work.
Really Great Designs.......2003-11-14
This book was really great. I am an advance Macramé artist and instructor and this book gave me several new design ideas. The description as to how to tie the knots was not bad either although "The Macramé Book," by Helene Bress is a little better in this respect. If jewellery is you thing this book is a must buy.

Still THE Defnitive Begonia Book.......2006-12-02
This book remains the Definitive Begonia Book. The information on the culture of begonias has stood the test of time. I agree with the other comments about this being the "Begonia Bible". I find myself using it as a guide and reference time and again. A must-have for the serious begonia enthusiast. Plus, the authors' love of this wonderful plant family just shines throughout the text!
Begonia Bible.......2004-04-08
This book is a must for serious begonia growers. It is a begonia growers bible. The Thompson's spent years compiling this now out of print book and there is nothing like it in print. It does not contain the newest varieties but the culture information and pictures make the begoniac drool with envy.
The best book on begonias in print.......2002-10-26
The definitive book on begonias, including descriptions of all classes of begonias, culture, propagating, and lots of pictures.
Begonias: A Complete Reference.......2001-07-11
This book is the ultimate reference to the genus Begonia, or is at least for the moment! Our indoor gardening association calls it "the Begonia bible" for good reason; her scholarship and research has yet to be surpassed and she documents most of the many species now in cultivation. In addition, it has a wealth of color and black and white pictures for positive identification. Well worth the search for this out-of-print gem of a resource!

Book Description
For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a childs unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike. The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently.
Customer Reviews:
Positive + Positive=Positive.......2007-01-04
Parents, teachers, and anyone working with children will benefit from the positive approach of helping all children to learn their strengths and use them effectively. The text has ideas to share that may change the life of a child and those who support the child.
Review from Lindsey Biel, OTR/L, co-author Raising A Sensory Smart Child.......2006-12-09
The Mislabeled Child is a revolutionary book that looks beneath the labels children receive, and addresses the real underlying issues. Essential reading for parents, teachers, and health care professionals alike, this highly readable text provides specific, practical approaches to recognizing and capitalizing on children's strengths in order to help them flourish. From sensory processing difficulties to dyslexia, from language problems to poor handwriting skills, the Eides provide useful insights and marvelous advice.
Excellent book with a novel approach........2006-12-08
The Eides take a new and refreshing approach to many of the concerns and challenges that impact our children's ability to learn. Informative and well-documented, this book is appropriate for anyone involved with children, including parents, teachers, therapists, and physicians. It is packed with important information backed by the latest research. Yet it is presented in a very readable fashion. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out more about the many and varied ways that children learn, including those with ADD, autism, sensory processing dysfunction, dyslexia, and those who are gifted.
The Mislabeled Child.......2006-11-05
Comprehensive resource, valuable for doctors, therapists, parents and teachers. Learning styles and sensory processing explained well. Invaluable to apply philosophy at any age.

THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.

One out of three women will get cancer in her lifetime; one out of four will die of it. Breast cancer, in particular, is becoming an epidemic in the lesbian community. Susan King's beautiful new book tells a story that is, unfortunately, bound to become familiar to too many of us. After her diagnosis, King realized there is a similarity between being ill and preparing for a long trip. You need to do research, learn a million new things quickly, and admit that you have little control over the trip's outcome. This book traces a post-diagnosis visit to Europe in which King examined historical perceptions of women's health and bodies while living through her own body's illness and healing.

Treading the Maze.......2001-06-14
This is a very powerful and creative book. I discovered it while I was doing research for my master's thesis. The process of thought and emotion conveyed by this artist's book is one of the most accurate representations of the experience of breast cancer I found. I would recommend buying this book just for its artistic and creative value.
Thank you to the author for creating this work. I am greatful that she had the courage to create this for others to share. It had a profound effect on my work and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with this subject through art.
